In this series of papers, we investigate the relative index theorem from the point of view of algebraic analysis. On a complex manifold X, let M he a coherent Dx-module and F an IR-mnstruc-tible sheaf. The complex RHompx (M, RHom(F, Ox)) is the complex of solutions of the system of PDE represented by M in the sheaf of generalized holomorphic functions associated to F. A natural problem is to find conditions under which such a complex has finite dimensional global cohomology and then to compute the corresponding Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove the finiteness theorem when (M, F) has compact support and is "elliptic", i.e. : char(M) n SS(F) C TxX where char(M) is the characteristic variety of M, SS(F) is the micro-support of F and TxX is the zero section of the cotangent bundle. In fact, we give a relative version of this finiteness result together with the associated duality theorem and Künneth formula. Our methods rely upon results of functional analysis over a .sheaf of Fréchet algebras obtained by one of the authors. Next, we attach a "microloeal Order class" µeu(M, F) E H2dx char M+SSF (T X ; D) to any elliptic pair (M, F) and prove that, under natural assumptions, this class is compatible with direct images, inverse images and external products. In particular, we get the index formula : X(RP(X ; RHom(M x F ; Ox))) = f yeu(M, F) T2xx (M) = fTX yeu (M) U yeu (F). When F = CM and X is a complexification of the real analytic manifold M, our salts for the pair (M, F) give an index theorem for elliptic systems and we discuss its relations with the Ariyah-Singer theorem.

This volume contains a selection from the proceedings of a conference organised by the International Feuchtwanger Society titled ‘To Stay or not to Stay ? German-speaking Exiles in Southern California after 1945'. The conference, held in September 2011 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades, explored the decision faced by all German-speaking exiles in Southern California at the end of World War II whether to return to Europe or stay in the United States. The volume opens with an analysis of the experiences of post-1945 remigrants as reflected in a major exile publication, Der Aufbau. Six chapters focus on the particular case of Lion Feuchtwanger, illuminating the circumstances which led him to remain in California after 1945. Subsequent chapters throw fresh light on other members of the German-speaking literary community in California. Studies focusing on remigration from the UK and the Soviet Union widen the discussion, as do chapters on the problems faced by professional musicians exiled in East Asia and in Palestine. The volume concludes with the experience of remigrants in the media and film industry during the early post-war years. After more than a decade of experience with structural adjustment programs, the Hohenheim-Seminar of the European Association of Agricultural Economists "Food and Agricultural Policies under Structural Adjustment" brought together researchers and development experts to exchange research results and experiences ; to explore alternative approaches that might be more effective for growth, institutional development and welfare ; and to draw conclusions for food and agricultural policy design. The book consistently emphasizes that appart from agricultural prices non-price factors constitute in many countries the binding constraints to better agricultural performance. Improvements are needed in education, health, social services, transport and rural support institutions. Alleviating such constraints are longterm processes, and success cannot be expected overnight. At the same time, immediate actions are needed to protect the poor against negative effects of structural adjustment measures.

Ce travail est une mise à jour de la systématique des ophidiens de Guyane française. 91 formes, toutes récoltées en Guyane française, appartenant à 90 espèces, 49 genres et 7 familles sont décrites. La tête de la plupart de ces espèces . est dessinée ainsi que le maxillaire de bon nombre d'entre elles. Pour chaque forme, il est précisé l'ensemble des caractères confirmant son identification. Les variations morphologiques rencontrées sont signalées, et les particularités proprement guyanaises soulignées. Plus de 20 espèces guyano-amazoniennes, susceptibles d'être rencontrées en Guyane française sont également mentionnées. 25 clés, toutes traduites en anglais, permettent de reconnaître les serpents non seulement de Guyane française, mais aussi des territoires limitrophes. Une étude écologique succincte, essentiellement sous forme de figures et de tableaux synoptiques, rassemble nos connaissances actuelles sur les espèces guyanaises. Un index de 3 pages et une bibliographie de 178 références sélectionnées complètent cette étude. This work is an up to date study on the taxonomy of Ophidians from French Guiana. Ninety one forms, all collected in French Guiana, belonging to 90 species, 49 genera and 7 families are described. The head for most of species has been drawn as well as the jaw for Many of them. For each form, the characters necessary for their identification are given. Morphological variations are noted and those pertaining to specimens from French Guiana listed. More than 20 species from the Amazon basin, which could also be collected in French Guiana, are described. Twenty five keys, both in French and English, enable snakes to be recognized not only from French Guiana but also from neighbouring territories. A brief ecological study, mainly in the form of figures and tables, gather together our knowledge of the guianese species. A 3 pages index and a bibliography with 178 selected references complete this study.

Hugely ambitious, Titian : Sources and Documents includes all known documents about Titian and his work dating from his lifetime, and all known references to him in contemporary publications. The relevant section of each text is transcribed in full, preceded by a short summary in English, with extensive annotation and, where necessary, a commentary. The intention of this incredible work of scholarship is to provide a comprehensive survey of the surviving historical evidence about Titian and his career. Titian was one of the most famous, successful and long-lived of Renaissance painters. Much of his output was for rulers or institutions whose archives have been in large part preserved, and many of his family papers have also survived. In addition, he was mentioned in more than a hundred and sixty different publications in his lifetime. Although hundreds of the documents about him and his work have been published, usually in specialised publications based on material in a single archive, there have only been two attempts to provide an overview of the entire body of documents and early published references to him, the first by Crowe and Cavalcaselle in 1877, the second by Adolfo Venturi in 1928. These publications were necessarily selective and included transcriptions of only a small part of the material which was used. The collection, amounting to over two thousand nine hundred items, includes not only texts specifically about Titian himself, but also those concerning his siblings and children, his principal assistants and the other members of the Vecellio family already active as painters before his death, as well as inscriptions on paintings and prints. In addition to texts dating from Titian's lifetime, the collection includes all biographical material published before 1700 and all other texts that could realistically be thought to reflect first- or second-hand anecdotal information about him. The particular strengths and limitations of the principal early printed sources and the circumstances in which they were produced are discussed in a substantial introduction, which also includes an overview of the main archival collections consulted in the preparation of the book. Most of these are in Italy, but others are in Spain, Austria and Germany. New transcriptions are provided for the great majority of the documents that have previously been published, and many hitherto unknown documents have been included. Consideration is given also to documents now known only via secondary sources, and to fake documents, of which a significant number were produced in the past two centuries.

The monastery of Port-Royal has been a favorite subject of scholarly research mainly because of its involvement with the founder of Jansenism in France, St-Cyran, and its family connections with Antoine Arnauld who was the theologian of the movement. Less studied, but also significant, was the role played by the reform of port-Royal by Mère Angélique Arnauld, and its continuance by her niece, Soeur Angélique de St-Jean Arnauld d'Andilly, in the Cistercian reforms of the Seventeenth Century. F. Ellen Weaver, who completed her doctorate at Princeton University and is now teaching Church History at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, has traced the evolution of this important reform from its Cistercian beginnings to its emergence as a model of Jansenist ideal and practice, pointing toward its final enduring influence in French Catholicism as a mythic symbol of heroic resistance of a community to oppressive authority in the name of freedom of conscience. She has done a careful textual analysis of the development of the Constitutions de Port-Royal during the period in which the controversies were raging (1948-1684) to illustrate this evolution fromCistercian to Jansenist character of the reform, and to point out continuities which have semetimes been overlooked in the polemic against the Jansenists. This work represents a significant contribution to studies in the religious history of modern France in general, and to monastic and counter-reformation studies in particular. Une étude neuve, unique en son genre, sur la place tenue par Mère Angélique Arnauld à Port-Royal et sur le rôle joué par sa nièce dans les réformes cisterciennes du dix-septième siècle. L'examen approfondi des Constitutions de Port-Royal révèle l'idéal janséniste et fournit une contribution non négligeable aux recherches sue l'histoire religieuse de la France moderne.

Critical attempts to evaluate Kleist's fictional world, e.g. as ordered or disordered, accessible or resistant to reason, face a hermeneutic problem : the material and psychological embeddedness of the characters in the very world they seek to understand. This problem is reflected not only in the less-than-omniscient perspective of Kleist's narrators, but also in the reader's confrontation with competing readings of events in terms of mythic absolutes and with the opaquely concrete quality of spatial metaphors. In this light, three new interpretations offer insight into such problems as the nature of the idyll in "Das Erdbeben in Chili," the Marquise von O...'s creative self-imprisonment, and the gypsy's apparently supernatural intervention in Kohlhaas' quest. Finally, the book presents a dynamic typology of spatial phenomena in the stories which accounts for Kleist's concern with the interpretive process as opposed to its presumed endpoint.

For some time now studies on European post-war history have regarded the 1970s as a period of crisis and uncertainty. Recently historians of both the Cold War and European integration have started to reassess the 1970s, but we still lack a comprehensive analysis of the period. Such an analysis was the main goal of a research project launched by a group of Italian scholars with the collaboration of foreign colleagues. In medical malpractice cases, the American as well as the German systems of law are faced with a basic dilemma : since liability is based on fault, the plaintiff who suffers bodily harm in the course of medical treatment often finds it very difficult to carry the burden of proof incumbent on him according to the normal rules of evidence. In most cases, he was harmed while unconscious or in ways not understandable to him because of his lack of knowledge in the area of medical science. Moreover, he frequently faces the reluctance of medical expert witnesses to testify about matters unfavorable to one of their professional colleagues. Therefore, American and German courts are trying to alleviate the plaintiff's burden of proof. The present study investigates these facilitations and queries whether they are still compatible with the system of fault liability.

The symposium will focus on two examples of autodidacts from the nineteenth century, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918), as well as on the issues surrounding this notion today. The model of the autodidact appears as a figure that sheds light on our value systems and our patterns of recognition and learning in a world where different conceptions of culture coexist. Over two days, art historians, critics, writers, artists and teachers will gather to discuss autodidacticism through multiple perspectives. The term "autodidact" is generally used to describe someone who has acquired knowledge or skills through their own reading, observations and practice - an approach that is radically different from academic study in the arts, for example, that is validated by institutions. Yet what can we possibly learn if we sacrifice brilliant cultural values on the altar of all- round relativism, where everything is equally valid ? Faced with this relativism, what does one make of the canonical in a globalised and fragmented world ? What to make of an unlearning that cripples the authority of the keepers of knowledge ? Barbara & René Stoeltie both began their careers as artists and gallery owners. With René as photographer and Barbara as writer, they have been collaborating on interior design articles since 1984, contributing to such influential magazines as Vogue, The World of Interiors, AD, Elle, House and Garden, Country Living and House Beautiful. The editor : Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN from 1987 to 2010, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel and lifestyle.

This scholarly publication presents the work of the designer, painter and illustrator Claude Gillot (1673-1722). The first volume on the artist in English, it accompanies a major exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum that explores Gillot's inventive and highly original draftsmanship and places his work in the context of artistic and intellectual activity in Paris ca. 1700. The history of eighteenth-century French art under the ancien régime is dominated by great names. But the artistic scene in Paris at the dawn of the century was diverse and included artists who forged careers largely outside of the Royal Academy. Among them was Claude Gillot. Known primarily as a draftsman, Gillot specialized in witty scenes taken from the Italian commedia dell'arte plays performed at fairground theaters and vignettes of satyrs enacting rituals that expose human folly. The book will address Gillot's work as a designer, painter, and book illustrator, and advance a chronology for his career. Crafting a timeline for Gillot's life and work will clarify his relationship with his younger collaborators Antoine Watteau and Nicolas Lancret. Through an artistic biography and six chapters, each devoted to an aspect of his oeuvre, Gillot's role in developing quintessential rococo subjects is established. We follow Gillot from his start as the son of a decorative painter in the bishopric of Langres to his arrival in Paris in the 1690s, as the city and its secular entertainments flourished apart from the royal court at Versailles. Myriad opportunities awaited artists outside official channels, and Gillot built his career working in the theater and as a painter and designer long before seeking official academic status. His involvement with writers, playwrights, and printmakers helped define his sphere. Gillot's preference for theatrical subjects brought him critical attention, and also attracted talented assistants such as Watteau and Lancret. Gillot came to prominence around 1712 working at the Paris Opéra and as a printmaker and illustrator of books, lending his droll humor to satires. By 1720, Gillot was enlisted to design costumes for the last royal ballet, one of the final projects of his career. He died nine months after his most celebrated pupil, Watteau. The sale of his estate, which including his designs and many etched copper plates, provided material for printmakers and publishers and ensured Gillot's lasting fame among print connoisseurs. His oeuvre as a draftsman and painter, however, was largely forgotten until drawings and canvases began to emerge in the first half of the twentieth century.

The contributions to this volume by H.W. Dechert, A.K. Fathman, F. Grosjean, D.C. O'Connell, M. Raupach, K. Sajavaara/J. Lehtonen, H.W. Seliger and R. Wiese all deal with speech data from native speakers of different languages, or native speakers and language learners of the same language, or speakers in their native and their second languages. They are the results of various methodological attempts to assess speech using a cross-linguistic approach and represent an area of research which may be called "Contrastive Psycholinguistics".

Inge ARTEEL Biographie einer Biographielosen Based on my experiences writing a monographical biography of Friederike Mayröcker I explore some dilemma's and paradoxes of biographical writing, both in the texts of Mayröcker herself and in the writing about her texts. In her prose texts as well as in paratexts Mayröcker cites and parodies conventions of (auto)biographical literature ; referential truth is both suggested and thwarted. When writing a biographical portrait, these ambivalences should be taken into account. En me fondant sur mon expérience d'écrire une biographie monographique de Friederike Mayröcker, j'examinerai quelques dilemmes et paradoxes de l'écriture biographique dans les textes de Mayröcker même et dans les écrits qui traitent de ses textes. Dans ses textes en prose ainsi que dans les paratextes, Mayröcker cite et parodie des conventions de la littérature (auto)biographique ; la vérité référentielle est en même temps suggérée et troublée/contrariée. The spatiality of the room is held to be an important condition for the specific appearance and an appropriate understanding of Mayröcker's literature. The guest, who is invited to the cramped room, can be seen as a deputy of the reader. Both of them have to step onto areas, which show narrow contacts between the body of the author and the hoarded materials. In that way, Friederike Mayröcker is a challenge for literary criticism as well as for modern archival theory. Le présent article traite de photographies de l'appartement viennois de Friederike Mayröcker dans lequel l'auteure est immergée dans des morceaux de papier, des manuscrits, des coupures de journaux, des brochures, des prospectus et des livres. La spatialité de la pièce apparaît comme une condition importante pour appréhender cet aspect spécifique et comme un moyen approprié pour comprendre la littérature mayröckerienne. This paper tries to clarify this concept by referring to Breton's Theorization of Surrealism in the two manifestoes, and to highlight Friederike Mayröcker's relation to this movement. The confrontation of Breton's manifestoes with extracts from Mayröcker's Magische Blätter and Gesammelte Gedichte leads to an analysis of keywords of Surrealism such as madness, dream, psychic automatism, association of ideas, magic, surreality, and reveals not only similarities, but also important differences in Breton's and Friederike Mayröcker's conception and practice of their art. As a referring point the research of Francis Ponge in the field of things and their "visualization" in language helped a lot to open a space by comparing the poetics of these two great poets. The path towards obtaining the degree in "humanities" and his intentions to elaborate a PhD-thesis are placed in the larger context of his efforts to integrate himself in the French society on the one hand and in the context of his efforts to establish himself as a German-speaking poet, on the other. We exploit here a number of unpublished documentary materials from the French archive, as well as a number of interviews, again unpublished, that we took between 1998 and 2000 with a number of persons close at that time to Paul Celan. Eight historical novels, published between 1881 and 1914, were used as primary sources for this article. These books played an important part in the popula-rization of the historical arguments justifying the an-nexation of both duchies by Prussia. Most novels were written either while Köller was Oberpräsident of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein, or a little later, and they can only be understood in the light of the Germanization policy which was carried out in this province. In the case of Northern Schleswig, nationalist intellectuals were confronted with two difficulties. Firstly, even the champions of the German cause in Northern Schleswig spoke a Danish dialect as their mother tongue. Secondly, individual members of one and the same family sometimes declared their support for different national camps. So neither the mother tongue and the national-political opinions, nor the "lineage" and the national-political opinions could be automatically equated. Most authors payed attention to the national peculiarities of Northern Schleswig in their work, whilst at the same time supporting the Germanization policy. The detour via the German history allowed a legitimation of the Köllerian politics. Some radical völkisch novelists apparently promoted a German-Danish reconciliation. But this was not aimed at the "real" Danish speakers. An imagined union of all Germanic peoples was at stake, not the political rights of an ethnic minority. Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht die deutschen nationalistischen Erinnerungsorte der beiden schleswig-holsteinischen Kriege (1848-1851 und 1864) im Deutschen Kaiserreich. Als Quelle dienen acht historische Romane, die zwischen 1881 und 1914 veröffentlicht wurden. Eine wesentliche Funktion dieser Werke bestand darin, historische Argumente für einen Verzicht Dänemarks auf die Herzogtümer und für ihre Abtretung an Preußen in populärer Form anzuführen. Die meisten Romane wurden während Köllers Oberpräsidentschaft in Schleswig-Holstein oder kurz danach verfasst und sind nur vor dem Hintergrund der Germanisierungspolitik in Nordschleswig zu verstehen. Die nationalistischen Intellektuellen waren im Falle Nordschleswigs mit zwei Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert. Erstens hatten selbst die Vorkämpfer der deutschen Sache in Nordschleswig einen dänischen Dialekt als Muttersprache. Zweitens bekannten sich manchmal Mitglieder ein und derselben Familie zu unterschiedlichen nationalen Lagern. Es gab also weder zwischen Muttersprache und national-politischer Gesinnung noch zwischen "Abstammung" und national-politischer Gesinnung eine systematische Korrelation. Die meisten Verfasser beachten in ihren Werken die nationalen Besonderheiten Schleswigs, sprechen sich aber gleichzeitig für die Germanisierungspolitik aus. Der Umweg über die jüngste deutsche Geschichte dient also der Legitimierung der Köllerschen Politik. Manche radikal völkischen Schriftsteller treten für eine deutsch-dänische Versöhnung ein. In keinem Fall sind aber die wirklichen Dänischsprachigen gemeint. Es geht um ein erträumtes Bündnis aller Germanen, nicht um die politischen Rechte einer ethnischen Minderheit.

Il s'agit du premier volume d'une série consacrée au temple de Médamoud. Un propylône introduit, dès le début du premier millénaire de notre ère, le complexe religieux de Médamoud, sur lequel s'appuie une enceinte datée d'Auguste par une stèle commémorative. Quoique l'édification de la porte ait été sans doute contemporaine de celle de l'enceinte et que le décor des embrasures ait été commencé sous ce règne, le monument est connu sous le nom de " Porte de Tibère ", les scènes et inscriptions de la façade et du revers, ainsi que trois scènes de l'embrasure nord-est, comportant les noms de cet empereur. L'écroulement de la porte, dans le courant de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle, a fait disparaître une part importante du décor avant le dégagement de l'éboulis par F. Bisson de la Roque en 1926. Un nombre conséquent de blocs, heureusement photographiés par Cl. Robichon en 1936, a encore disparu avant la fin du XXe siècle. En dépit de ces pertes regrettables, les scènes et inscriptions conservées, presque entièrement inédites, représentent un apport extrêmement précieux et révélateur pour notre connaissance de la théologie locale aux époques ptolémaïque et romaine, l'élévation du temple étant largement détruite, et des théologies thébaines dans lesquelles Médamoud et ses divinités jouent un rôle majeur. -- A propylon introduces, from the beginning of the first millennium AD, the religious complex of Medamud, on which is based an enclosure dated to Augustus by a commemorative stele. Although the construction of the gate was probably contemporary with that of the enclosure and the decoration of the embrasures began during this reign, the monument is known as the "Gate of Tiberius", as the scenes and inscriptions on the façade and on the reverse side, as well as three scenes in the northeast embrasure, bear the names of this emperor. The collapse of the doorway in the second half of the 18th century caused a large part of the decoration to disappear before F. Bisson de la Roque cleared the scree in 1926. A significant number of blocks, fortunately photographed by Cl. Robichon in 1936, disappeared also before the end of the 20th century. In spite of these regrettable losses, the preserved scenes and inscriptions, almost entirely unpublished, represent an extremely precious and revealing contribution to our knowledge of the local theology in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, the elevation of the temple having been largely destroyed, and of the Theban theologies in which Medamud and its gods play a major role.

Integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK over recent years. Problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints in conventional bridges not only make integral bridges a cost-effective option but also means they have longer lifespans that their counterparts. The Highways Agency standards now require that, wherever possible, all new bridges of less than 60 m length should be of integral form. The growing importance of integral bridges has highlighted the need for more information and guidance to assist in improving bridge design. This book presents the results of research commissioned by the Highways Agency into the thermally induced soil/structure interaction created by environmental temperature changes and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill of bridge abutments. It : develops a better theoretical understanding of temperature-induced cyclic displacements ; in particular the strain ratcheting in backfill soil in contact with a 'stiff' structure, identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict soil behaviour, identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem This book provides essential information for bridge designers to aid their understanding of the cyclical changes in backfill pressures and settlement due to diurnal and annual changes in bridge deck temperature - a crucial factor when designing integral bridges.
