Empirical Issues in Formal Syntax and Semantics
The present volume is a collection of studies devoted to major issues in contemporary syntax and semantics : in particular, argument structure, ellipsis, negation and scope. The papers included, which represent a number of formally rigorous contemporary frameworks, bring out new facts from a large variety of languages as well as novel solutions to a broad range of analytic puzzles. Part One illustrates the major ways in which argument structure is used and conceptualized. Part Two provides new perspectives on ellipsis, applying concepts and tools developed for focus, questions and quantification. Part Three introduces a number of novel proposals for the representation of scope, considerably enlarging the empirical domain of scope relations. These studies are unusual in that they combine an enthusiasm for detailed syntactic and semantic data and a serious concern for formal rigor. They discuss data from a wide variety of languages, including Japanese, Bulgarian, French, Greek, English, Italian, German, Hungarian, Inuit and Western Austronesian languages. The main themes of the book include negation, argument structure, ellipsis, indefinites, telicity, presuppositions, modality and quantification.

Metamorphosis of the Administrative Welfare State
The book's conceptual framework is built upon an analysis of different varieties of rationality. A conception of political rationality is elaborated. First, orientations of contemporary administrative theory and research are analysed from the point of view of that rationality. Next, the same viewpoint is applied to an analysis of an entity called the 'administrative welfare state'. This concept is used to cover the typical institutional shape of the leading highly developed countries until the 1980s. The strengths and the weaknesses of the contemporary 'new public management' reforms are also evaluated from the point of view of political rationality. Finally, steps are taken to define elements of actual reform programmes in the terms of the political rationality.

The review of the OHADA accounting system symbol of the evolution towards IFRS standards was the focus of this study. It is about understanding how business leaders perceive the evolution from OHADA standards to IFRS standards. To conduct this study, we opted for a qualitative approach. As a result, we did semi-direct interviews with twenty-five business leaders in Cameroun (18 Cameroonian business leaders and 7 multinational business leaders). The data collected was exploited through content analysis via NVivo10 software. However, the results show that the accounting innovations of SYSCOHADA allow the production and communication of more relevant accounting and financial information for users. Likewise, managers of multinational companies believe that OHADA must fully converge towards IFRS. This perception is contrast to that of Cameroonian business leaders who cite the contextual contrast as the main obstacle and therefore taking into account the specificities of this contrast will be an asset for full convergence towards IFRS.

Built in the 19th century to excavate the world-renowned Belgian blue stone, today, the quarry is home to an ambitious project : the Pôle de la Pierre, a training centre specialising in the stone industry. The book covers the transformation of the site in three essays : - a photographic essay by Marie Noëlle Dailly exploring the interior and exterior spaces and landscapes of the transformed site - a conceptual essay inscribing the Soignies project in the more general context of the reuse of industrial heritage ; - a graphic essay that reconstructs the transformation of the site as a process of place-making as well as a collective process of meaning-making by means of documents, photographs of the construction phases, drawings, and sketches.

This book examines the Brechtian influence on Roger Planchon's three stagings of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan (July 1954 ; October 1954 ; December 1958). The meaning of a Brechtian mise en scène is determined by an analysis of the Berliner Ensemble production of the same play (1957). A comparison of these stagings not only reveals the clash between the German and French theatrical traditions but the German mise en scène also provides a point of reference which underlines the similarities and differences between Planchon's and Brecht's staging methods.

A New Family
The 'success' of a conversion depends on the group into which the convert is introduced. This study in early Christian ecclesiology from the perspective of house and family is guided by this sociological theory. Converts often met with problems in relation to their family. They joined a fellowship which conceived of itself as a family of brothers and sisters. It is the aim of this investigation to present the potential of the Christian fellowship to take the role of a new family in relation to its converts. This is done by means of historical material and cross-cultural comparisons. The relevance of the material for present-day churches and mission is considered.

Le Thème de la claustration dans The Unicorn d'Iris Murdoch
Quel lecteur d'Iris Murdoch n'a pas t pris sous le charme de The Unicorn, un des romans les plus envotants de notre poque ? N'a-t-on pas voqu son propos l'atmosphre inquitante d'un Le Fanu, la sombre architecture d'un roman gothique et la magie d'un conte de fes ? Nul doute qu'en faisant revivre le mythe mdival de la licorne la romancire n'ait t attire par le dcor de cette Irlande, au pass riche en lgendes, dont elle est elle-mme issue. Mais, comme l'ont fait remarquer bien des commentateurs, celle qui fut disciple de Jean-Paul Sartre ne pouvait manquer d'aborder le problme de la libert que pose le symbole de la licorne captive. L'auteur du prsent ouvrage part de l'hypothse selon laquelle la claustration et la relation victime bourreau sont les thmes dominants du roman et que prison et libert ont dans cette uvre et, plus gnralement, dans l'univers murdochien des connotations particulires.

This study concentrates on metafictional novels by Angus Wilson, Lawrence Durrell and Doris Lessing. The various methods and degrees of the built-in novelists' attempts to transform autobiographical experience into fiction are surveyed and followed by a discussion of the validity of mimetic presuppositions about fiction. The alternatives to realism are then discussed against the background of recent narratological theories.

Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy
The concept of mass is one of the most fundamental notions in physics, comparable in importance only to those of space and time. But in contrast to the latter, which are the subject of innumerable physical and philosophical studies, the concept of mass has been but rarely investigated. Here Max Jammer, a leading philosopher and historian of physics, provides a concise but comprehensive, coherent, and self-contained study of the concept of mass as it is defined, interpreted, and applied in contemporary physics and as it is critically examined in the modern philosophy of science. With its focus on theories proposed after the mid-1950s, the book is the first of its kind, covering the most recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the nature of mass and its role in modern physics, from the realm of elementary particles to the cosmology of galaxies.
The book begins with an analysis of the persistent difficulties of defining inertial mass in a noncircular manner and discusses the related question of whether mass is an observational or a theoretical concept. It then studies the notion of mass in special relativity and the delicate problem of whether the relativistic rest mass is the only legitimate notion of mass and whether it is identical with the classical (Newtonian) mass. This is followed by a critical analysis of the different derivations of the famous mass-energy relationship E = mc2 and its conflicting interpretations. Jammer then devotes a chapter to the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass and to the various versions of the so-called equivalence principle with which Newton initiated his Principia but which also became the starting point of Einstein's general relativity, which supersedes Newtonian physics. The book concludes with a presentation of recently proposed global and local dynamical theories of the origin and nature of mass.
Destined to become a much-consulted reference for philosophers and physicists, this book is also written for the nonprofessional general reader interested in the foundations of physics.

Weierstrass-Stone,
The Weierstrass-Stone Theorem is one of the main tools of modern analysis, and several parts of functional analysis would not exist without it. The purpose of this monograph is to present its true nature by proving several increasing generalizations of this theorem, going from the classical case of subalgebras to submodules and to arbitrary subsets of continuous functions over compact spaces. Some closely connected results on uniform approximation which are important for many applications are also presented, namely the Choquet-Deny and the Kakutani Theorems for semi-lattices and for lattices of continuous functions, respectively. The beautiful variation of the Weierstrass-Stone Theorem due to von Neumann is also included with the proof due to R. I. Jewett. The monograph ends with several recent results on uniform approximation of bounded continuous functions over non-compact spaces.

Refusant toute critique, ils récusent ceux qui cherchent à les mettre en garde qu'ils perçoivent comme suppôts d'un complot mondial contre une Vérité qu'eux seuls connaitraient. Derrière des algorithmes de repérage, Love Coachs, grands Maîtres, psychothérapeutes, nettoyeurs de Karma, magnétiseurs, guides spirituels sont en embuscades sur les réseaux sociaux et prolifèrent par l'appât du développement personnel. L'énergie kundalini, la médecine ayurvédique, le nettoyage karmique ou la communication animale, Tout est bon pour récupérer l'argent des gogos. Au sein du groupe, ils se perçoivent victimes de complots extérieurs, une fois sortis ils se disent alors victimes d'avoir été manipulés . Mais victimes toujours ! Réalité ou besoin ?

A leurs côtés, combattent d'autres enfants de super soldats : Kyle Lévêque, le methuselah au pouvoir kinétique, Dimitri Boskoff à la force surhumaine et Akira Tadashi, fille d'Adam et de Carlotta Simmons. Cette dernière est la plus puissante, elle possède des pouvoirs de télépathie et télékinésie hérités de son père et descend d'une longue lignée de guerriers démoniaques et angéliques grâce à sa mère. Le groupe est accompagné de fidèles d'Akira, les anges déchus qui combattent Satan et son armée. Il y a trois ans, le plus puissant des combattants a réussi à repousser l'invasion des Enfers et a disparu avec Satan et une grande partie de son armée. Les démons restants, apeurés et perdus, ont préféré repartir dans le royaume de l'ombre. Mais Satan est revenu... Et le monde est entré dans une période sombre où la lumière a disparu pour laisser place aux ténèbres.
