This book reconstructs fundamental aspects of family organization across historical Poland-Lithuania, one of the largest political entities in early modern Europe. Using a plethora of quantitative measurements and demographic microsimulation, the author captures and elucidates the complex patterns of leaving home and life-cycle service, marriage and household formation, along with domestic group structures and living arrangements among different subpopulations of Poland-Lithuania, highlighting a variety of ways in which these patterns were nested in their respective local and regional contexts. By showing that at the end of the 18th century at least three distinct family systems existed in the Polish-Lithuanian territories, Szo ? tysek challenges a number of orthodoxies in the ‘master narratives' on the European geography of family forms of F. Le Play, J. Hajnal, P. Laslett, and their followers. Volume two of the book contains an extensive bibliography along with a thorough archival documentation of the census-like microdata used in the book, and provides detailed information on their quality and further technicalities pertaining to data analysis.

This collection of essays, written by scholars from all over Europe, explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. Although all the chapters analyse writings in English, the volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions : from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons – to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosity – but ultimately each of them has to face questions of the definitions of home, belonging and otherness. Consequently, the essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The ‘protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

The health of the people in the developing world is a major concern of Tropical Medical Societies of the temperate zones. Tropical medicine as an applied science has been dealing mainly with "tropical diseases." But health and diseases have many dimensions, some of which so far have not found sufficient attention of the scientific world, e.g. planning of adequate health care, medical-anthropological and socio-cultural factors operating between a health care system and the populations to be served, or the very basic problem of nutrition and its interaction with health and development. Therefore, it was felt that European tropical societies should once join forces and organize a meeting for the discussion of particularly those issues. The topics were : Health care utilization, coverage and cost of primary care, medical pluralism and concepts of diseases in traditional societies, which all are linked at the level of the provider of primary care and his clientel. Concepts of nutrition particularly during child bearing are the root of many health problems and interact with certain diarroeal and other infectious diseases.

This substantial catalogue explores a remarkable collection of medieval European sculpture. Richly detailed with plentiful illustrations and original research, it is a notable contribution to medieval scholarship. The McCarthy collection comprises more than 150 specimens of medieval European sculpture, produced over a period of nearly 600 years. A testimony to the comprehensiveness of Robert McCarthy's interest in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, its geographical, chronological and typological breadth place it among the most important of its kind in private hands. Including a few early examples from Merovingian France, Anglo-Saxon England and Visigothic Spain, its holdings have a strong focus on Romanesque art, with over fifty capitals and other architectural carvings from Iberia, France and the Italian Peninsula. Some of these pieces are associable with such notable workshops as those of Gislebertus, the Master of Agüero and Compostela's Master Mateo, while a great number can be closely compared to anonymous works in major and provincial sites. Notable monuments like the monastic powerhouse of Cluny or the abbatial churches of Autun and Savigny are represented through important sculptural fragments - most published here for the first time. The transition to the Gothic style and the period of its splendour, particularly in France, are witnessed by an ample selection of statuary and architectural fragments - some traceable to such important buildings as Noyon cathedral and Paris' Notre Dame, and others, more loosely, to the artistic circles that gravitated around the great projects of the age. Freestanding sculpture in stone or wood, including a small but precious nucleus of Virgin and Child statuary and some Spanish polychrome figures, constitutes an interesting subset of the collection's late medieval holdings, as do some especially fine examples of Italian trecento sculpture. Enriched with outstanding photography by Barney Hindle and Mark French, entries aim to provide detailed stylistic, iconographic and contextual analyses, with special attention paid to comparanda in public and other private collections. World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. Based on a wide collection of primary sources and documentary materials, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Adriatic region, a conflicted European space that had been affected by territorial disputes and ethnic strife for decades during the 20th century.

Distance education has a long tradition. It has asserted itself all over the world and its effectiveness in bridging geographical distance between teachers and learners and in multiplying the scarce teaching resources universally is recognised. The movement towards European integration and international efforts for developing worldwide education will give even greater importance to distance education. This means that distance-education research will also gain increased importance - if it manages to bring into accord its own theoretical demands with those made by practice. The philosophical problem of the link between theory and practice lends a special political status to distance-education research.Fernunterricht und Fernlehre haben eine lange Tradition. What are the implications of "change" as assessed from a Revolution's discourse point of view ? Did Revolution in its Eastern European mode "happen" only to make its once heroic agents "vulgar banana eaters" (Slavoj Zizek)? To what extent is/was Revolution part of the globalization process (Americanization)? The answer of this book is that it constituted a series of occurrences of both contingency and continuation. It is Romanian Revolution as a metonymic and creative space, incorporating the Event (here the city of Bucharest, December 1989-1990), the Memory (refiguration of identities), the Contact zone (the street as a public place), and the Local-Global (the East-West dialectics) that Revolution's Urban Landscape discusses in much detail. Through combining and analysing materials from both the local cultural field and the international press (witness reports, journalistic documentation, travelogues, fiction, academic publishing, graffiti, etc.), Raoul Granqvist demonstrates a number of aspects of Revolution's self-reflexivity, vitality and amorphousness. The title of the exhibition refers to both a literal thread of figuration that runs throughout the works in the presentation, as well as the complex and often shifting symbolism of the human body in the medieval period. For thinkers and artists of that time, the human body served as a rich source of religious and philosophical significance, one that was in a constant state of flux between idealism and disfigurement. While the early Middle Ages reserved representations of suffering bodies to the margins of their world, the later Middle Ages displayed wounded bodies in the most central spaces of public life. The crucified body of Christ and the wounded bodies of saints assumed important positions as they were displayed on altars, in processions, and on the exteriors of churches. The Medieval Body tells a unique story about the human form as both a physical entity and a recognizable metaphor. Presenting works spanning the course of a thousand years, this exhibition offers insight into the body as an essential imagemaking tool with far-reaching implications for the development of art in the European Middle Ages.

The history of Shakespeare's reception in 18th century Italy is scanty and fragmentary. The present study attempts to join the scattered fragments of the mosaic together and to interpret the resulting picture in the light of current theories of comparative literature. Hamlet has been chosen as an exemplary case in Shakespearian production because it is associated with the very first milestones in Shakespeare's introduction into the Italian literary system. Hamlet also exemplifies on the one hand Italy's cultural indebtedness to France in the field of Shakespearian translation (the first Italian staging of a Shakespearian play was a Hamlet translated from Ducis' adaptation), and, on the other, the need for Northern European literary works to undergo profound changes before they could be assimilated in Italy. The process of Shakespeares's reception in 18th century Italy was made even more tortuous by a missed opportunity, again concerning Hamlet. The first complete Italian translation of the play by Alessandro Verri has never to this day been staged or published ; its impact on the development of Italian literature was only indirect through its influence on Verri's own creative works, which finally contributed to the birth of the Italian Romantic movement.

Née du désir du romancier tchèque Jaroslav Rudis de raconter l'histoire de son grand-père cheminot, cette trilogie "ferroviaire" nous fait découvrir la vie d'un contrôleur de trafic bonhomme habitant les montagnes de Silésie. Traumatisé par la dernière guerre, Alois Nebel est devenu la proie de ses hallucinations, sorties de ce brouillard épais, symptomatique et récurrent, d'où surgissent des nazis, l'Armée Rouge ou des trains pour Auschwitz... Jusque-là claquemuré dans sa solitude, Alois fait un séjour à l'hôpital psychiatrique, où il rencontre "Le Muet", personnage étrange et perturbé, venu de Pologne rechercher quelqu'un ou quelque chose. Fort de cette oreille attentive, il se confie à lui comme à un ami et lui raconte l'histoire de sa famille. Mais, un jour, enquêtant sur le meurtre d'une jeune femme, un inspecteur polonais vient récupérer "Le Muet" pour le rapatrier dans son pays. Après la chute du régime communiste, Alois sort de l'hôpital psychiatrique et décide d'accomplir un vieux rêve de cheminot, celui d'aller visiter la gare centrale de Prague. Cette errance sera le prélude à un grand changement dans sa vie, ponctué par le retour du "Muet", échappé des geôles polonaises... L'adaptation cinématographique d'Alois Nebel a reçu le premier prix européen du film d'animation 2012 (European Film Awards).

Figure centrale de l'avant-garde photographique européenne, l'allemand Andreas Müller-Pohle (1951-) est également l'éditeur de la prestigieuse revue European Photography, qu'il fonde en 1980, et qu'il dirige jusqu'à ce jour. Son travail artistique, d'abord très expérimental, s'est en permanence concentré sur le rôle et les conditions de création et de réception de la perception photographique. A partir du milieu des années 1990, il utilise et explore la photographie digitale. Ses séries autour de l'eau et son rôle écologique vital, commencées en 2005, offrent une vision lyrique aussi bien que critique de cette problématique environnementale majeure. Andreas Müller-Pohle met au point un mode de prise de vue original : il photographie mers et rivières " de l'intérieur " , soit en s'immergeant sous l'eau, soit en photographiant au niveau de sa surface. Il donne ainsi à voir berges, côtes, environnement, leur état naturel ou l'altération que nos sociétés industrielles leur font subir, au travers de couleurs liquides. Le photographe se mêle, voire se confond avec le milieu photographié et en propose ainsi une perspective originale pleine de poésie. L'exposition et son catalogue présentent les trois projets réalisés par l'artiste, illustrant ce dispositif photographique, et les visions qui en découlent : " The Danube River Project " (2005-2006) ; " Hong Kong Waters " (2009- 2010) et " Kaunas upon the River " (2017).

The Italian Yearbook of Human Rights 2014, the fourth in the series, provides a dynamic and up-to-date overview of the measures Italy has taken to adapt its legislation and policies to international human rights law and to comply with commitments voluntarily assumed by the Italian Government at the international level. The 2014 Yearbook surveys the activities of the relevant national and local Italian actors, including governmental bodies, civil society organisations and universities. It also presents reports and recommendations that have been addressed to Italy by international monitoring bodies within the framework of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union. Finally, the Yearbook provides a selection of international and national case-law that casts light on Italy's position vis-à-vis internationally recognised human rights. Né en 1975, le peintre Damien Cadio est diplômé des Ecoles nationales supérieures des Beaux-Arts de Paris et de Rouen et titulaire d'un Master 2 en arts plastiques de l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Il vit à Nantes, où il enseigne la peinture à l'école des Beaux-Arts. Il a reçu le Premier prix de peinture Antoine Marin (Arcueil), premier prix du Sovereing European Art Prize (Londres), et a été lauréat du Prix Ricard (Paris). En binôme avec Thomas Fort (curateur et critique d'art), il prépare la première monographie consacrée à son travail sous la forme de deux volumes réunis sous étui : - une présentation de ses peintures à travers cinq séries qu'il développe depuis 2014 : " La Folie Hennequin ", " La Nuit de l'histoire ", " Blackouts ", " La Géante ", " Animals " - une correspondance écrite entre Damien Cadio et Thomas Fort afin d'évoquer les grands thèmes qui traversent l'oeuvre de l'artiste. Cet ouvrage monographique met en dialogue écrits et images afin de dévoiler un ensemble de réflexions autour de la peinture de Damien Cadio. A travers ce travail d'observation sur le long qui s'apparente à une traversée par les mots de sa peinture, Le lecteur est ainsi convié au fil des pages à tisser les liens entre les peintures, l'intention de leur auteur et l'approche du critique.
