Foreign Devils
Foreign Devils investigates representations of exile in Hollywood cinema from 1930 to 1956 through the films of Peter Lorre, Béla Lugosi, and Conrad Veidt. This book dispels the assumption that by virtue of its hegemonic, reactionary, and exclusionary modes of representation, otherness is excluded from or only obliquely alluded to in classical Hollywood cinema. This book contends that Hollywood uses European émigré actors to speak of the experience of exile and the often-futile exilic attempts at integration into the host nation. This original, cross-disciplinary study incorporates a number of research interests in film studies – specifically Hollywood cinema, exile and émigré filmmakers, the Golden Age of the studio system, the Universal Horror cycle, and Poverty Row filmmaking. Foreign Devils combines the close reading of key texts with a theoretical framework that encompasses body theory and theories of space and nation with historical accounts of immigration to the United States and American concepts of nationhood through the symbolism of blood and death studies. Film studies students and academics, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as scholars in other disciplines, and anyone with an interest in Hollywood cinema, Central European culture in the 1930s-1950s, and European emigration to the United States will benefit from reading this book. Foreign Devils is also a valuable resource for courses in Hollywood filmmaking, émigré film, exile, Central European culture, nationalism studies, and Jewish studies.

Waste Management in Poland and Germany
Poland attracts foreign investment. This holds also true for foreign enterprises involved in waste management. In order to do efficiently and successfully waste management-related business in Poland, it is of great importance to get acquainted with the following issues : general waste management situation, market conditions and business openings for waste management firms, and the legal framework governing waste management in Poland. Given that Poland hopes to be admitted to the European Union by the turn of the coming century, co-ordination and harmonization of the different national waste management programs are imperative. Therefore, for comparative reasons, the German waste management system and the waste management policies in the European Union are discussed as well.

Le livre que nous présentons est le fruit d'une réflexion menée depuis plus de trois ans notamment avec le concours de la Commission des Communautés Européennes autour du thème général "identité européenne et pluralité des cultures" . Le passage de l'Europe économique à l'Europe dite "politique" pose avec acuité le problème de l'identité. Dans quelle Communauté les pays candidats à l'adhésion vont-ils entrer ? Quel est le sens de l'intégration toujours plus poussée entre les Etats membres ? Personne ne nie qu'une conscience d'appartenance à une Communauté est indispensable à la construction d'une entité à vocation politique. Mais comment cette conscience va-t-elle se concilier avec les identités nationales et régionales ? Les diversités culturelles ne vont-elles pas faire obstacle à l'avènement d'une véritable citoyenneté européenne ? Cet ouvrage s'efforce de répondre à ces interrogations en posant le problème de l'identité dans toute son ampleur, comme problème politique et institutionnel, comme problème sociologique, comme problème culturel. Nous n'ambitionnons pas de présenter un programme sectoriel détaillé de mesures mais plutôt un cadre de réflexion pour situer éventuellement un tel programme. L'objectif est de faire un diagnostic et de formuler des propositions non seulement pour faire progresser le projet politique mais aussi pour renforcer le sentiment d'appartenance. A ce titre l'ouvrage doit être considéré comme une étape dans une réflexion à développer notamment avec nos futurs partenaires d'Europe centrale et orientale.

La destruction des Juifs d'Europe. Tome 3
Raul Hilberg n'a pas voulu traiter seulement de la dimension éthique de la catastrophe " indicible ", " innommable ", " passage à la limite de l'humanité ", a-t-on répété, le génocide est d'abord-on l'oublie trop souvent- un fait historique. En cela il est justiciable des procédures qu'applique l'historien à ses objets d'étude.
La première édition en langue française de La destruction des Juifs d'Europe a été établie en 1988 à partir de l'édition en trois volumes publiée à New York en 1985 sous le titre : The Destruction of the European Jews. Elle en reprenait l'intégralité du texte mais également des compléments et rajouts inédits de l'auteur pour la version française. Cette nouvelle édition mise à jour, complétée et définitive est établie, avec l'aide de l'auteur, à partir de l'édition en trois volumes publiée à New Haven et Londres en 2003 sous le titre : The Destruction of the European Jews Third Edition. Semblablement, elle reproduit l'Intégralité du texte mais comporte également des compléments et rajouts inédits de l'auteur pour cette version française.

Embracing Democracy
Hermann Broch wrote two of the most significant novels of German modernism, The Sleepwalkers and The Death of Virgil, which established his importance to German literature. His writings on democracy, mass delusion and internationalism are more obscure. Embracing Democracy examines the central political, social and psychological tenets of Broch's concept of "total democracy" as an expression of the synthesis of his European intellectual development – his Viennese Bildung – and his new position as an exile from fascism. This book chronicles Broch's experiences from the founding of the Austrian First Republic to his exile in the United States (1918 to 1951). The author traces two seemingly contradictory narratives in Broch's political consciousness. On the one hand, Broch held an intellectual position in his post-exile political theory that was consistent with the philosophy of history, psychology and epistemology of his Viennese milieu. On the other hand, he significantly reconceived the utility of politics for his theory of value construction, while also becoming more involved in political activism. This book provides new perspectives on the work of Hermann Broch beyond his literary oeuvre and offers insights into the development of political theory among exiled European intellectuals in the United States.

Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

The Nobel Peace Prize and the Laureates
The articles which are published in this volume investigate, on the basis of selected cases of mainly European winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, the meaning of the Prize and the award in the Prize winner's own countries. The case studies, which are mainly of a biographical nature, offer a varied picture with regard to the reactions of public opinion in the respective countries. They consent, however, in so far as the immediate impact of the award was only limited and of short duration.

For some time now studies on European post-war history have regarded the 1970s as a period of crisis and uncertainty. Recently historians of both the Cold War and European integration have started to reassess the 1970s, but we still lack a comprehensive analysis of the period. Such an analysis was the main goal of a research project launched by a group of Italian scholars with the collaboration of foreign colleagues. The present volume is the outcome of the most significant results of the project, all based on extensive archival investigations. It offers significant new contributions on a fundamental period of our most recent history. Jusqu'à une époque récente, les études sur l'histoire de l'après-guerre en Europe ont considéré les années 1970 comme une période de crise et d'incertitudes. Ce n'est que récemment que les historiens de la guerre froide et de l'intégration européenne ont commencé à réévaluer les années 1970. Une mise en perspective globale faisait cependant encore défaut. Un groupe de chercheurs italiens a décidé de s'y atteler, en développant un projet de recherche avec la collaboration de collègues étrangers. Cet ouvrage présente les résultats de leurs discussions ainsi que des recherches menées dans les archives de plusieurs pays et organisations. Il offre de passionnantes contributions et interprétations sur une période fondamentale de notre histoire récente.
