Je me souviens de ta main qui traçait des lignes à la craie sur les tissus. De ton trait de coupe, tu délimitais des territoires entiers, qui portaient les noms de crêpe de Chine, bourrette de soie, panne de velours, lin, coton suisse, tweed, toile, gabardine, flanelle, étamine de laine... Entre souvenir d'enfance et malentendus liés à la langue, Florence Gilard esquisse à petites touches sa relation à sa grand-mère. Elle décrit les gestes sûrs de la couturière qu'elle était, les jeux d'enfants, les mercredis passés chez elle et la difficulté de se séparer. Reprenant à son compte les gestes consistant à assembler et coudre ensemble les morceaux de tissus, elle compose un récit, fait de pièces qui ne semblaient pourtant pas tenir ensemble. Malentendus ou incompréhensions langagières, des petites phrases énigmatiques ou confuses pouvaient alors donner lieu à des représentations erronées, décalées, émaillées de drôleries. L'étrange : The end, te and, the hand... devient le point de départ de son récit. Qu'est-ce que ces mots anglais entrés dans l'univers de l'en-fance grâce aux cow-boys dans les films de western peuvent bien avoir à voir avec les Américains venus libérer la France il y a si longtemps ? La naïveté d'alors fait place à un regard amusé et tendre sur ce qui se transmet à travers le récit familial. Dans cet objet hybride, graphique et poétique, l'autrice suggère plus qu'elle ne démontre. Elle nous offre un regard sensible et intime sur le temps qui passe, la nostalgie de l'enfance, la fin de vie, la tendresse qui lie les générations d'une même famille et savoir dire au revoir tout en gardant précieusement ses sou-venirs. Florence Gilard utilise plusieurs techniques graphiques pour recréer cette toile de souvenirs et de nostalgie de l'enfance. Dessins aux crayons de couleurs, anciennes photographies, fil cousu dans la page se mêlent pour dérouler le fil de cette histoire intime.

Pire encore, elle a eu la bêtise de lui permettre de devenir son ami... et de laisser la ville entière s'en émouvoir. Elle n'a compris qu'au dernier moment son erreur, en découvrant l'impensable : espion aux ordres de son peuple oppressé, les Herranis, le jeune homme était là depuis le début pour la trahir, pour renverser le pouvoir. A présent, tout a changé. Kestrel a été contrainte de lutter pour sa survie. Elle a vu ses amis tomber autour d'elle et a dû supporter la douleur de la trahison d'Arin - elle dont l'éducation entière lui souffle de tout faire pour se venger. Mais, quand il a fallu choisir son camp, elle a préféré, à son tour, l'impensable : sacrifier son bonheur pour celui des Herranis, céder à un terrible chantage qui la force à tourner le dos à Arin une bonne fois pour toutes. «Die Welt war meine Gemeinde»- Willem A. Visser ’t Hooft. A Theologian for Europe between Ecumenism and Federalism
Willem A. Visser 't Hooft (1900–1985), Dutch pastor and theologian, was one of the most significant personalities in the Protestant Ecumenical movement. Deeply influenced by Karl Barth, and filled with a strong Ecumenical spirit, he was closely involved in the founding of the World Council of Churches, of which he was elected General Secretary. During the Second World War, many Protestants became convinced of the need for an international political system which, beside uniting the nations and peoples of Europe, would guarantee them fundamental freedoms and mutual respect for their historical, cultural and confessional traditions. The directors of the WWC were strongly committed to federalism, partly because of the political traditions of the states from which their member churches originated (Switzerland ; Great Britain and its Commonwealth ; the United States), and partly because of their conviction that a simple confederation of states, based on the model of the League of Nations, would be completely incapable of containing national ambitions. In spring 1944, Visser 't Hooft welcomed into his Geneva home the representatives of the European Resistance, who, under the leadership of Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi, signed the International Federalist Declaration of the Resistance Movements. These historic transnational encounters, aimed not only at coordinating military action or seeking diplomatic contacts but at exploring ways to "build" peace and re-establish the future of the Continent on new foundations, marked a profound break with the past.

This beautiful publication presents a collection of exquisite ancient bronzes from the Wadsworth Atheneum that were collected by John Pierpont Morgan. It accompanies aspecial exhibition of the bronzes at Bowdoin College. This fully illustrated catalogue presents highlights of the ancient bronzes that were collected by J. Pierpont Morgan and are currently in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Purchased between 1904 and 1916, the bronzes were given to the museum by Morgan's son in 1917. Morgan was a passionate collector and spent years of his life acquiring exquisite works of art. He had a discerning eye and discriminating taste, and his driving motivation was to find works of quality and beauty. His Greek and Roman bronzes include a range of figure and vessel types : males and females, gods and mortals, humans and animals and hybrid mythological creatures, free-standing statuettes, and furniture embellishments. This is the first exhibition and publication to consider the bronzes as a group. Morgan chose each work of art for its exquisite craftsmanship, its quality of composition and execution, and its preservation. These objects represent the very best of ancient Mediterranean bronze sculpture, with carefully rendered clothing, hair, and fur, and adorned with inlays of silver and other luxury materials. Showcasing different types of objects and figures that were made in bronze in the ancient world, this exhibition and book demonstrate the high level of quality that these works of art could achieve. The bronzes are important not only for their provenance and place in America's 'Gilded Age', but also as highly significant individual works of art that represent the best of ancient bronzeworking. New high-resolution photography of each work of art will allow readers to appreciate their intricate details of craftsmanship, including copper and silver inlay. The gay's and lesbians's rights in an enlarged European Union
During the last few years, gay and lesbian rights have reached the European Union human rights agenda and different instruments to combat discrimination have been adopted, which have had major implications for the gay and lesbian communities all over Europe, This volume focuses on less known and less studied aspects of these accomplishments. Its originality lies both in the multidisciplinary nature and the international approach of this project ; researchers from different universities throughout Europe (Brussels, Leiden, Stockholm, Athens, Ljubljana, Budapest, Bucharest, Paris and Krakow) and from different disciplines (law, political science, sociology and journalism) have contributed to this volume. Through case studies and theoretical reflection, the articles collected here aim at reinforcing the existing interest for the topic as well as offering an academic look at the subject, with a view to fostering scientific dialogue and contributing to the development of this field of research. Languages of Exile
Languages of Exile examines the relationship between geographic and linguistic border crossings in twentieth-century literature. Like no period before it, the last century was marked by the experience of expatriation, forcing exiled writers to confront the fact of linguistic difference. Literary writing can be read as the site where that confrontation is played out aesthetically – at the intersection between native and acquired language, between indigenous and alien, between self and other – in a complex multilingual dynamic specific to exile and migration. The essays collected here explore this dynamic from a comparative perspective, addressing the paragons of modernism as well as less frequently studied authors, from Joseph Conrad and Peter Weiss to Agota Kristof and Malika Mokeddem. The essays are international in their approach ; they deal with the junctions and gaps between English, French, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and other languages. The literary works and practices addressed include modernist poetry and prose, philosophical criticism and autobiography, DADA performance, sound art and experimental music theatre. This volume reveals both the wide range of creative strategies developed in response to the interstitial situation of exile and the crucial role of exile for a renewed understanding of twentieth-century literature.

There exist greater differences of opinion with regard to the content and style of the Eastern Portal of the North Transept than any other transept portal at Chartres. Its archivolts have caused controversy and some remain unidentified. Katzenellenbogen (The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral) pays little attention to many elements of the portal and hence his interpretation of the portal as "Mariological" does not hold up in light of newly discovered iconographic relationships.

Climbing the Mountain. The Scientific Biography of Julian Schwinger
Julian Schwinger was one of the leading theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His contributions are as important, and as pervasive, as those of Richard Feymnan, with whom (and with Sin-itiro Tomonaga) he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. Yet, while Feynman is universally recognized as a cultural icon, Schwinger is little known even to many within the physics community. This biography aims to describe Schwinger's life and research contributions to a wider audience. As a youth, Julian Schwinger began as a nuclear physicist, turning to classical electrodynamics after World War II. In the years after the war, he was the first to renormalize quantum electrodynamics. Subsequently, he presented the most complete formulation of quantum field theory and laid the foundations for the electroweak synthesis of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, and he made fundamental contributions to the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, to many-body theory, and to quantum optics. He developed a unique approach to quantum mechanics, measurement algebra, and a general quantum action principle. His discoveries include, Feynman's, parameters and 'Glauber's' coherent states; in later years he also developed an alternative to operator field theory, which he called Source Theory, which reflected his profound phenomenological bent. His late work on the Thomas-Fermi model of atoms and on the Casimir effect continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of physicists. This biography describes the many strands of his research life, while tracing the personal life of this private and gentle genius.

For years the Klesch portrait was dismissed as a workshop product - partly because poor condition hid its true quality, but also because it was not believed that Titian could have deigned to create one for Guidobaldo, whose father Guidobaldo della Rovere (1514-1574) and family had a long history of patronizing the artist. Recent research, however, has thrown Guidobaldo's geopolitical significance into relief. He was supreme commander of Venice, the Papal States and then Spain. He sent thousands of soldiers to the major conflicts of his day, particularly the defense of Malta (1565) and the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and his engineers were sought throughout Europe for their ingenuity. In this volume full of new research, Ian Verstegen reveals that Guidobaldo was not peripheral but central to Italian politics and was regarded at several points in history as a key figure who could bring peace or who could influence major conflicts on the Italian peninsula, particularly the War of Siena, and then Pope Paul IV's offensive war against Spain. Anne-Marie Eze gives the first comprehensive examination of the painting's provenance, outlining the portrait's vicissitudes and reception at different moments in its near 500-year history, reexamining received wisdom about its past ownership, and presenting new documentary evidence to expand on and fill gaps in our knowledge of its whereabouts. Finally, Matthew Hayes and Ian Kennedy reflect on the technique, date, recent conservation, and authorship of the painting, proving it to be a masterpiece that only the great Titian could have created.
