The Great Good Place?

Ever since Arthur Conan Doyle's hawk-faced detective Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler Dr Watson followed the advice of Horace, to seek truth "inter silvas Academi", the groves of Academus have been swept by a wave of violence. Judging from the impressive number of bodies discovered on American and British campuses in fiction, it does not seem far-fetched to draw the conclusion that behind the Eden-like façade of the Great Good Place each of the seven Deadly Sins is enjoyed to the full. Looking back on almost nine decades of college mystery novels, the genre has certainly lost none of its appeal. Considering its hybrid nature, the aim of the present anthology is to cover numerous aspects of the productive field of college mystery novels.

Black Sheep, Red Herrings, and Blue Murder

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was an inveterate user of proverbs in her fictional writings, the sales of which number in excess of one billion. An active writer for fifty-four years, Christie used proverbs in a manner that both reflected and shaped contemporary British speech. This lexicographical book examines 3,290 proverbs and proverbial sayings uttered by 785 characters in sixty-six novels, 142 short stories, seventeen dramas, and six romances. The author's premise is that Christie modeled all her fictional works on the well-made play formula and that proverbs are employed not in isolation, but as a function of plot, character, and thought. In addition to an introductory essay, the book contains a list of the distribution of Christie's proverbs according to title, a keyword index with citations of standard authorities, and an appendix containing six statistical tables.

The Broker-Dealer's Liability for Recommendations

In today's capital markets the individual investor finds it increasingly difficult to gather, select and evaluate all the information that is required to make a reasonable investment decision. It is the broker-dealer who steps into the breach. The service he renders as a professional intermediary of informations culminates in investment recommendations. The threat of being held liable should ensure that a broker-dealer's recommendation is the result of a sound inquiry into the security and the customer's situation. This study examines the extent to which such a remedy is actually provided for under the U.S. securities laws and the so-called suitability rules of self-regulatory organizations (i.e., broker-dealer associations and stock exchanges).

Polygyny in Pre-christian Bafut and New Moral Theological Perspectives

Polygyny, commonly called polygamy, has been one of the main obstacles to evangelisation in Africa. After Vatican II many theologians began to question the traditional church policy towards polygamists and their wives who, after receiving the faith, asked for baptism. The two main solutions proposed were the baptism and the life catechumenate solutions. The present work studies polygyny in pre-christian Bafut and traces the history of the problem of polygynous converts from 1201. It suggests that the real obstacle to their baptism is polysex, not poly-marriage. In the concluding chapter, a solution is offered to polysex, according to which the polygamist, after baptism, becomes a special kind of monogamist.

The Moral Ideals of Care and Respect

Philosophers are in the process of constructing an environmental ethics theory intended to govern human conduct toward nature. Relying on moral philosophy or ecological theory to generate normative principles, philosophers have failed to pay adequate attention to human psychology. To address the question of responsible relations with nature via insights and methods from moral psychology means to validate environmental ethics theory with real-life human functioning. It also means broadening the psychological study of morality to include nature. An interpretive analysis of the study participants' moral deliberations and experiences revealed the moral ideals of "care" and "respect." These contrast with the moral ideal of "justice" which dominates environmental ethics discourse.

Pedagogic Design and Literary Form in the Work of Adalbert Stifter

This investigation brings to light the fundamental significance of literary form as the chief mediator of Stifter's pedagogic endeavour, an aspect so far neglected in Stifter literature. It opposes the widely held view that Stifter's pedagogic incentive is a result of the Austrian revolution of 1848. While Stifter's pedagogic thought stems primarily from his Kremsmünster education in the spirit of Josephinism, it is his increasingly sensitive and respectful involvement of the reader's perceptive powers in conveying the import which, far beyond the expression of pedagogic design in terms of moral and social maxims, reveals Stifter's originality as a pedagogic writer.

In this book, Emmanuel Michel reveals 30 years of sculptures mainly inspired by his travels worldwide but also based on mythological or imaginary subjects. A modeller above all, he works with clay and plaster but also carves wood and stone. His portraits cast in bronze, clothed in recycled metal, occupy the space with an incredible lightness. They characterise a large part of his identity and are widely documented in this publication. With his preparatory studies, his drawings, the views of the workshop and the setting of the sculptures, this book leads us vividly into the heart of his realistic, sometimes oneiric, yet always human creation.

The Secret of Sounding Native

Proclitics have traditionally been considered either as erratic sloppiness of articulation or as morphologically determined weak forms. It could be shown that the reduction typical of the unstressed position preceding a nucleus is highly regular and further-reaching than so far assumed. A multi-dimensional model of phonology analyzes the proclitic position as a subsystem of the phonology of English with its own inventory of distinctive units and its characteristic dynamic processes of reduction.

"Alexandre le Grand" is a lesser-known tragedy written by Jean Racine, the renowned French playwright. Set in the ancient world, the play explores the final days of Alexander the Great, delving into themes of ambition, hubris, mortality, and legacy. Unlike Racine's more celebrated works, this play offers a unique perspective on the famous historical figure and his introspective contemplation of power and mortality. While not as frequently performed, it showcases Racine's talent for dramatic storytelling and psychological depth.

--- Did the men and women of antiquity hear as we do ? Which sonorities were particularly significant to them ? Those simple questions remind us that the sounds as well as their possible interpretations belong to cultural constructions, so that the definitions of cacophony and music, of noise and silence, vary with times and from one context to another. The historicity of such usual notions is at the heart of the book, which sets out, for the ancient Eastern, Egyptian, Greek and Roman worlds, to explore the ways in which the sounds or their absence become meaningful. Behind the breadth of the chronological arc lies a common object, the study of terms and expressions related to sounds. The book provides an analysis of this corpus in a historical approach nourished by anthropology of sound. All the papers collected here invite the reader to listen carefully to ancient words and, by focusing on ancient discourses, reveal all the complexity of social, political and religious values carried by sounds in particular settings.

-- The "Northern Storerooms" of Thutmosis III are a set of eight chambers accessible through the corridor within the sandstone enclosure of the Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. Built by Thutmosis III during his autonomous reign after the death of Queen Hatshepsut, these chambers form a complex with restricted access that underwent several architectural transformations. Among the most remarkable are the modification of its western entrance during Thutmosis III's own reign and the decoration of one of the chambers by Ptolemy XI Soter II, nearly fourteen centuries after its construction. This complex maintains close connections with other structures from the reign of Thutmosis III, including the Akh-menu, the new cultic center of the Temple of Amun-Re, as well as the access areas and the central part of the Karnak Temple. This volume presents, for the first time, all of the epigraphic material, largely unpublished, from this sector (including facsimiles, hieroglyphic texts, and translations), along with complete photographic coverage, undertaken after the completion of a major restoration and conservation programme in 2016.
