Marianne, la quarantaine épanouie, plaît aux hommes — à son mari, ainsi qu'à tous les autres. Et comme son mari adore la voir prendre son pied avec un autre, ou tient à ce qu'elle lui raconte ses plaisirs par le menu, tout roule... D'ailleurs, Marianne, qui a besoin de faire du sport, roule à vélo en compagnie de Jeannot, le meilleur ami de son mari. Elle pratique aussi la pétanque, la natation, la randonnée, et toujours un homme la colle par-derrière pour l'assister... avec la complicité du mari.

" Partout, les gens exhibaient leurs plaies mentales devant des inconnus. Ils exhibaient leur viol par leur père, leur homosexualité mal vécue à l'E.D.F., leur humiliation d'être trop gros, leur douleur de n'être pas remarqué, leur douleur d'être trop remarqué, leur stress après une victoire, leur stress après une défaite, leur harcèlement au travail, leur harcèlement au chômage. Dans cette idylle, entrent en résonance des destins croisés, celui d'un vieux libanais qui poursuit un rêve, celui des mères d'Alexandre et d'Ella dont les pas fusionnent et nous ramènent à l'atmosphère de la ville amazonienne dans les années 60. Au fil du temps, une terrible révélation opérée par la magie du septième art va ramener Ella à l'indicible, au lien originel…

Le sens de notre démarche éditoriale consiste ainsi à permettre l'accès à ces oeuvres sans pour autant que nous en cautionnions en aucune façon le contenu.

Les "zoos humains", symboles oubliés de l'histoire contemporaine, ont été totalement refoulés de notre mémoire collective. Ces exhibitions de "sauvages", aussi bien des "exotiques" que des "monstres", ont pourtant été, en Europe, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon, une étape majeure du passage progressif d'un racisme scientifique à un racisme populaire. Au carrefour du discours savant, des cultures de masse et de l'intérêt des puissances coloniales, ces exhibitions ont touché un peu moins d'un milliard et demi de visiteurs depuis l'exhibition en Europe de la Vénus hottentote, au début du XIXe siècle. Ces exhibitions, peuplées d'êtres difformes et de personnes en provenance des espaces coloniaux d'Afrique, d'Amérique, d'Océanie ou d'Asie, comme appartenant à un univers de l'anormalité, disparaîtront progressivement avec les années 1930, mais elles avaient fait alors leur oeuvre : bâtir deux humanités. Véritable synthèse et ouvrage de référence sur la question, rassemblant les meilleurs spécialistes internationaux, cette nouvelle édition de Zoos humains. Au temps des exhibitions humaines (La Découverte, 2002) est entièrement refondue et largement complétée. Fruit de plus de dix ans de recherches, elle paraît à l'occasion de l'exposition "Exhibitions : l'invention du sauvage", organisée au musée du Quai Branly à Paris.

Depuis l'Exposition de 1867, les humanitaires ont énoncé et donné à voir leurs idées, leurs idéaux et les outils de leur profession à travers divers événements nationaux et internationaux, utilisant des présentations et une variété de mises en scène. Ils ont mis en place des salons de l'innovation, des expositions itinérantes, des tournées de spectacles et même des festivals de cinéma. Durant toute cette longue période, les humanitaires ont tenté de présenter au monde les besoins de leurs "bénéficiaires" ainsi que l'importance et la signification de leur travail. Au coeur de ces expositions, les humanitaires ont longtemps cherché à définir les frontières de leur travail, à inscrire leurs activités dans un nouvel ordre international et à légitimiter leur présence dans des zones de conflit et de désastre. Toute activité d'exhibition comporte une scénographie et des choix de représentation complexes, explicites ou implicites. En raison de cette dimension, les expositions, salons et diverses mises en scène permettent d'explorer l'histoire de la représentation de l'humanitaire à des moments-clés de son histoire. Ce volume rassemble ainsi un ensemble de regards sur l'acte d'exposer, ainsi que sur l'exposition en tant qu'expérience vécue. Laboratoires de la complexité politique, diplomatique et sociale du projet humanitaire, les expositions et autres formes d'exhibition sont ainsi parties prenantes de l'histoire de l'humanitaire et de sa communication, mais aussi d'autres événements historiques qui doivent être replacés dans leur contexte. Les différentes contributions présentées dans ce collectif apportent une contribution inédite et fondamentale sur ces expositions qui ont contribué à construire l'humanitaire moderne.

Quand, à la fin de 1962, fut publié le single "Love Me Do" (étincelle à l'origine d'un phénomène planétaire) les Beatles avaient déjà à leur actif une histoire intense faite d'exhibitions sur des scènes délabrées, de sélections désastreuses pour des shows télévisés, de tournées bancales... C'est la période prise en considération dans ce volume, à partir de la première exhibition pour laquelle on possède des photographies, sur la remorque d'un camion destiné au transport de charbon ! L'histoire d'un groupe voué au succès planétaire est minutieusement documentée, non seulement dans ce qui est écrit (avec les noms, les dates, les programmes détaillés des concerts), mais aussi au travers d'une multitude de photographies d'un intérêt exceptionnel.

This fascinating and richly illustrated book accompanies The Medieval Body, the third in a series of vanguard exhibitions that places medieval masterpieces within a contemporary context. The title of the exhibition refers to both a literal thread of figuration that runs throughout the works in the presentation, as well as the complex and often shifting symbolism of the human body in the medieval period. For thinkers and artists of that time, the human body served as a rich source of religious and philosophical significance, one that was in a constant state of flux between idealism and disfigurement. While the early Middle Ages reserved representations of suffering bodies to the margins of their world, the later Middle Ages displayed wounded bodies in the most central spaces of public life. The crucified body of Christ and the wounded bodies of saints assumed important positions as they were displayed on altars, in processions, and on the exteriors of churches. The Medieval Body tells a unique story about the human form as both a physical entity and a recognizable metaphor. Presenting works spanning the course of a thousand years, this exhibition offers insight into the body as an essential imagemaking tool with far-reaching implications for the development of art in the European Middle Ages.

Notre propos est d'étudier le comique de l'hybridation et l'exhibition du comique dans les formes dramatiques et paradramatiques contemporaines. Notre champ d'investigation se propose d'être transversal. Il ne sera ni limité strictement à une époque donnée, ni aux auteurs français ou francophones. Une première partie étudiera le comique en question. Une seconde s'attachera à la poétique du rire. La troisième examinera les principales formes du comique moderne. La quatrième définira le grotesque hybride et le burlesque exhibé. La cinquième examinera les modalités d'application de l'hybridation ainsi que de l'exhibition en montrant comment le théâtre contemporain entraîne le spectateur du Bouffon Hilarant aux salves du Rire. Les traits saillants du devenir du comique dans le théâtre contemporain seront ainsi abordés, dégagés.

Created by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, the exhibition Native Land, Stop Eject proposes a dialogue between filmmaker Raymond Depardon and philosopher Paul Virilio on the notions of being rooted and uprooted today, an epoch in which human migration flows are taking place on an unprecedented scale. In his film Hear Them Speak, created with Claudine Nougaret, Raymond Depardon gives a voice to those who wish to remain on their land but are threatened with exile. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan, and Ben Rubin give form to Paul Virilio's concepts in six dynamic maps which examine new trends in contemporary human movement due to environmental, political, and economic factors. The texts included here, published for the first time in the catalog Native Land, Stop Eject (Prix Nomad's 2009), offer a chance to explore the themes raised in the exhibition. Accompanied by exhibition views, they incite contemplation on the meaning of sedentariness and nomadism, as well as related questions of identity.

In her animated film Anna & the Jester in Window of Opportunity (2019), Julie Béna relates the curious encounter between a series of characters both existing and imagined. A critique of the concept of transparency current in architecture and society, this exhibition has been conceived as a series of real and virtual layers, which create a space of opacity and indeterminacy. This publication explores the principles and ideas that underpin these works through a conversation between Julie Béna and Laura Herman, together with an essay by Irene Sunwoo, an architectural historian and exhibition curator.

This fully illustrated catalogue is the first of its kind to examine the relationship between money, power, resistance and dissent. It accompanies major exhibitions at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. War, revolution and protest are defining themes in all periods of world history, shaping national identities and influencing material and visual culture in myriad ways. The ubiquity of money makes it a powerful vehicle for diseminating the messages of the state to the public, but the symbolic and nationalistic iconography of currency could also be subverted or mutilated in powerful acts of defiance, rebellion and propaganda. Beginning in Britain in the wake of the American and French Revolutions, the exhibition explores the political and social tensions present in society, and communicated through the production or defacement of money, over the past 200 years. It contrasts the use of money by the radicals of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, such as Thomas Spence, and the Suffragette movement, with the money produced by European empires as they scrambled to dominate the rest of the world. The currency histories of the two World Wars reveal the subversion of the very nature of what money is, and highlight the role of money as the tool of occupation, imprisonment, resistance and remembrance. The coins countermarked during the Troubles in Northern Ireland hint at the polarised nature of political discourse and sectarian violence. The exhibition culminates with the work of contemporary artists and activists who use money to highlight the challenges of the modern world, both locally and globally - as a canvas, as a raw material, or as a powerful means of communication. From a unique coin commemorating the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 to a Syrian banknote refashioned to raise awareness of the refugee crisis, this publication showcases many newly acquired objects from the Fitzwilliam Museum collection, alongside materials from the Archive of Modern Conflict. These objects are enhanced by a number of important loans from museums and private collections, including the cannon used at the Battle of Mafeking, an exploded transit van and contemporary art works that take money, its authority and destruction as their theme. Each object constitutes a witness statement to its time and its conflict, and each section has its own story to tell. The chapters - by archaeologists, historians, curators, and artists - create a rich context for the more than 130 objects in the catalogue, most of which have never been studied in depth or published before.

Paul Durand-Ruel redefined the role of the art dealer. An exceptional entrepreneur and precursor of the international art market scene, he established a network of galleries between Paris, London, Brussels, and New York, and organized international traveling exhibitions. The first to recognize the talent of the Barbizon School artists and then the impressionists, and confident in his role championing their art, Paul Durand-Ruel established the careers of visionary artists including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, and Mary Cassatt. This book-fully revised and updated by the Durand-Ruel estate-is an indispensable reference for understanding the artistic circles and the art market of the nineteenth century. Retracing the dealer's life from 1831 to 1922, it features more than sixty illustrations including archival documents and reproductions of works of art, a selection of articles and letters, a list of the principal exhibitions and paintings he displayed, as well as a biographical timeline, family tree, and indexes to key figures, artists, and artworks.

deValence is a graphic design studio founded in Paris in 2001. Published on the occasion of its exhibition at kyoto ddd gallery, this book presents a selection of works designed in the field of theater, architecture, design, publishing and contemporary art. deValence pays particular attention to typography and the process of shape forming. In tandem with this prolific activity, the studio has an associated publishing house, B42, which produces works that seek to stimulate reflection on and discussion of visual cultures and design as well as the role of the designer in society. For this first solo exhibition in Japan dedicated to the studio, the kyoto ddd gallery is presenting a selection of the studio's projects illustrating its contribution to the renewal of contemporary graphic design.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, New York City was financially and socially bankrupt, but the art and music scene was flourishing. During these years, the downtown New York music scene - no wave, hip-hop, disco funk and club culture - shaped Jean-Michel Basquiat as both a musician and an artist. This catalog for a traveling exhibition explores how Basquiat's painting has parallels in his music (sampling, cut-up, rapping), and takes a new look at his production as a writer and a poet in light of his connections with the then-emerging hip-hop culture. This beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog of rarely seen photographs and images sheds new light on Basquiat as a musician, exploring how his art and music are related, and how they reflect on his identity as a Black artist in the United States, the downtown New York music scene, and contemporary culture.

In this exhibition, the Museum Plantin-Moretus shows the 80 most beautiful old master drawings from Flemish collections. From scribble to cartoon : Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens in Flemish Collections (Van Crabbelinge tot Carton : Tekeningen van Bruegel tot Rubens in Vlaamse Collecties) gives an astonishing and representative overview of the art of drawing in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2020, the Flemish government placed a large number of old master drawings on their masterpiece list, including rare artworks by Frans Floris, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jacques Jordaens, Otto van Veen, Jan Fijt and many more. The majority of these masterpieces are kept in the Museum Plantin-Moretus. The museum takes the official recognition of these drawings as masterpieces as an opportunity to put its unique collection in the spotlight. The exhibition presents an overview that illustrates who, why and how people drew in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries

Mais très vite la mécanique de son exhibition s'enraie à mesure qu'un souvenir envahit par à-coups sa conscience, souvenir d'une scène précise où elle s'était sentie progressivement prise au piège du regard de trois hommes.Entre celle qui doit accomplir son travail de fashion sharing et celle qui glisse malgré elle dans la reviviscence traumatique, s'ouvre un espace trouble. Délaissant peu à peu le cérémonial de l'exhibition, Lol entraîne alors le spectateur vers une espèce de cérémonie intime où il s'agit pour elle d'aller jusqu'au bout d'un processus de mise à nu. Dans une lumière peu à peu déclinante, tenter d'être comme elle peut, non pas la Lol tout sourire façonnée par le regard des autres, non pas l'enfant du théâtre des apparences, mais celle qui tremble devant le gouffre noir et cherche à se dire en vérité.

This beautiful publication presents a collection of exquisite ancient bronzes from the Wadsworth Atheneum that were collected by John Pierpont Morgan. It accompanies aspecial exhibition of the bronzes at Bowdoin College. This fully illustrated catalogue presents highlights of the ancient bronzes that were collected by J. Pierpont Morgan and are currently in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Purchased between 1904 and 1916, the bronzes were given to the museum by Morgan's son in 1917. Morgan was a passionate collector and spent years of his life acquiring exquisite works of art. He had a discerning eye and discriminating taste, and his driving motivation was to find works of quality and beauty. His Greek and Roman bronzes include a range of figure and vessel types : males and females, gods and mortals, humans and animals and hybrid mythological creatures, free-standing statuettes, and furniture embellishments. This is the first exhibition and publication to consider the bronzes as a group. Morgan chose each work of art for its exquisite craftsmanship, its quality of composition and execution, and its preservation. What is a family ? And how is family experienced ? These questions, explored through artists' eyes, are at the heart of the exhibition, Real Families : Stories of Change, a collaboration between the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University of Cambridge Centre for Family Research. The book provides a catalogue of the exhibition in four sections, containing twelve illuminating essays that discuss the concept of the family. Real Families : Stories of Change focuses on art produced in the past 50 years, a period of significant change in how families are created and structured, with historical works woven into the exhibition to examine what is genuinely new, and what has remained the same, about the family. The catalogue includes reproductions of paintings, photography and sculpture. In the first section, 'What is a Family ? ', artists portray new forms of family, including families formed by assisted reproduction and families with LGBTQ+ parents, as well as families affected by divorce, adoption and infertility. The works prompt viewers to consider stereotyped beliefs about what makes a family and society's prejudice against childlessness. Second, 'Family Transitions' starts with artists' representations of motherhood, followed by an examination of the positive role that fathers play. Works on siblings speak to the dynamic and intense relationships that exist between siblings, and those on grandparents and grandchildren highlight the benefit of having each other in their lives. Artists also convey their complex feelings about their ageing parents. 'Family Dynamics' explores positive and negative relationships between couples, parents and children, and extended family, with works that foreground affection and rejection, comfort and conflict, enmeshment, estrangement and not fitting in. The works also examine the wider social, cultural and political influences on family relationships. Finally, 'Family Legacies' highlights the importance to many people of a sense of connection and belonging. This section explores the transmission of family from one generation to the next through genetic inheritance, social and cultural practices, language and objects, which can forge emotional connections and give rise to family memories.

Après avoir proposé une vision originale de la Renaissance et de la modernité, il a exploré les représentations de la Femme, fantasmée par les peintres au cours des cinq derniers siècles. Désormais il élargit son propos au Corps dans tous ses éclats, depuis Adam et Eve, ancêtres mythiques et modèles, jusqu'aux inquiétants hybrides du trans- humanisme – en passant par les exhibitions, les déformations, l'expression de la pudeur et de la douleur. On y retrouvera tous les grands novateurs de l'art plastique : de Rubens à Picasso, de Klimt à Bacon, de Klein à Niki de St Phalle... Ils expriment nos inquiétudes, nos doutes et notre espoir.

En lien avec l'exposition "Elles font l'abstraction" présentée de mai à août 2021, le Centre Pompidou et l'association AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) et le LEGS (Laboratoire d'études de genre et de sexualité - Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis / Paris Nanterre), ont organisé un colloque international les 19, 20 et 21 mai 2021, avec comme invitées d'honneur Adrienne Edwards, Briony Fer, Harmony Hammond et Griselda Pollock. Ce numéro des Cahiers du MNAM, plus volumineux que les numéros habituels, restitue 13 interventions marquantes par des personnalités du monde de l'art autour du thème des femmes et de l'abstraction.
