Flavius Josephus, the Zealots and Yavne

The historiography concerning The War of the Jews by Flavius Josephus has underlined the various aspects (economic, social, political, religious) of the Roman-Jewish conflict from 66 to 73 AD. A study of the Jew's vision of himself and the Other, the Roman, makes it possible to see this conflict from the point of view of the conquered. Analysis of the events which, from 6 to 66 AD, resulted in the opening of hostilities, suggests that the Jewish-Roman conflict was also a conflict of mentalities. The Jewish mentality implies a concept of war which contributed to the development of the divisions and schisms between the supporters of full-scale war against Rome (the Zealots) and the non-belligerents (Rabbi Yohanan ben Zaccaï and the Yavne School, Flavius Josephus). Furthermore, the discourse of Flavius Josephus is Jewish discourse. So far as certain options are concerned, such as his rejection of the war against Rome on the one hand, and his hatred of the Zealots on the other, a literal reading of that discourse shows that they are in the direct line of Jewish tradition as represented by RYBZ and his Yavne School. Josephus can be taken literally ; the interest of his writing lies in its presentation of an internal cohesion and in the light that throws on the points of convergence and divergence in the same Pharisaic options. Finally, Josephus' text leads us to reconsider the problem of his 'betrayal'.

The Biblical Vision of the Human Person

Although modern study of the Bible has made impressive philological advances, it lacks an adequate philosophical frame of reference that would link the symbolism of the Biblical narrative to the problems of human existence. The present work sets out to provide the germ of a philosophy of language and human consciousness that would serve as a basis for a proper exegesis of the Biblical text. Part One establishes the historical, philosophical and hermeneutical framework by examining the link between experience, symbolization and the structure of human consciousness as elaborated historically in myth and philosophy. Part Two applies this framework to representative anthropological texts from the Old and New Testaments in order to forge a link between the Biblical symbolism and the fundamental problems of human existence. Part Three draws attention to the implications of the inquiry for a philosophical anthropology and a more comprehensive hermeneutical framework.

During Late Antiquity, the nature of Roman imperial power was profoundly reshaped by two major phenomena : the rise of Christianity, which became the state religion at the beginning of the fourth century, and the development of a multipolar world with the emergence of kingdoms progressively recognized as political interlocutors. These issues became particularly pressing because, despite the affirmation of the monarchical character of imperial power since the middle of the third century, no institutional rule of succession had been established, requiring the emperors to constantly build a social consensus in order to assert their authority. To do this, they put themselves on stage in ceremonies which, from their investiture to their funeral, were intended to establish their legitimacy and that of their successor. At the same time, the Germanic kingdoms established on the soil of the Empire were shaped by their interactions with the imperial power and with the local Roman aristocracies and used Christianity as a way of reinforcing their legitimacy. This study examines the mechanisms on which power relied in the Roman Empire, both in the West and the East, as well as in the early Germanic kingdoms from the end of the third to the end of the sixth century. What role was played by the staging of political rituals and discourses produced by the power itself ? How did the Christianization of imperial and royal power manifest itself ? What was the role of the court in the strategies of legitimization ? How did the kings inscribe their power in symbolic frameworks inspired by the Imperial courts and those of the provincial governors ? To answer these questions, this book analyzes the transformations of Roman imperial power in Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period, as well as the political experiments from which the model of medieval kingship in Western Europe was constructed.

Religion

Metaphor and God-talk

This volume contains a selection of the papers originally delivered at the 25th LAUD-symposium on 'Metaphor and Religion'. The essays in this volume analyse the metaphorical nature of religious language from a variety of perspectives. The concept of metaphor has been developed by the sustained attention of theologians, philosophers, linguists and literary theorists for more than two millennia. The last twenty years have witnessed a renewed and intensified interest in this powerful dynamism of thought. The present contributions offer a survey of the most adhered-to theories of metaphor. They elaborate on their significance for religious language : next to analogy as a philosophical and theological tool, interactionist, pragmatist and cognitivist theories are used to shed light on the peculiarity of human efforts to talk and think about the transcendent.

Japanese for busy people I. Revised edition

In the ten years since its publication, Japanese for Busy People has won acceptance worldwide as an effective, easy-to-understand textbook, either for classroom use or for independent study. In this new edition, numerous revisions and additions have been made, taking into account the comments and responses of both students and teachers who have been using the course. In Book 1, the revisions are directed at making the grammatical explanations easier to understand, while adding further explanations of points that students have difficulty with. Changes have also been made in favor of more natural practice sentences and dialogues. In addition, new appendices list the particles, interrogatives, and sentence patterns in the book, as well as the kanji introduced. More fundamental revisions have been made to Book II, which has been expanded and divided into two volumes, Book II and Book III. The changes result in a smoother transition from Book I, make new grammatical elements clearer, and present more natural practice dialogues and exercise sentences. This concise course in natural Japanese is ideal for such students as businessmen whose aim is a working knowledge of the spoken language in everyday life. "Survival Japanese for Adults," as it might be called, gets to the heart of the language without recourse to childish or classroom-only Japanese. Vocabulary and grammar have been limited to about one-third that usually encountered in beginner courses, and words and patterns that students will find immediately useful are emphasized. The thirty lessons are composed of dialogues, notes on grammar, and vocabulary, exercises, and quizzes. In addition to developing verbal fluency, by the time the student is one-third of the way through Book 1, he or she will have mastered the two phonetic syllabaries of Japanese, hiragana and katakana.

Charge of the Bull

Few will deny that 11th Bristish Armoured Division, the "Charging Bulls" of this story, was the finest armoured division on any side in the Normandy campaign in 1944. Soon after the end of the war, the history of the Division, Taurus Pursuant, was published in England in 1946. About 30 years later, Jean Brisset published his French-language book, La Charge du Taureau, about the same Division. It quickly went through two editions in France. What ensured its success was that it enlivened and humanized the well-know official accounts of the Division's battles in Operations EPSOM, GOODWOOD, BLUECOAT and others with the personal stories of participants in those battles who were often soldiers of humble but honourable rank. In addition, he paralleled the British military story with accounts of the experiences of French civilians caught up in the terror of thoses same battles, the anguish of theur tragedies and losses and the joy of their liberation. It is a history unique of its kind and deserves to be presented in this English translation. In addition to the story about 11th Armoured Division an Appendix telles about the battles in the Normandy bocage fought alongside the "Charging Bulls" by the hard-fighting 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division and how the local civilians and Resistance fighters helped them. Another Appendix recounts, among other adventures, how a little 5-year-old French girl saved an Australian Spitfire pilot from recapture by the Germans after he had been shot clown in the bocage. Finally, an Epilogue brings the story up to date. It pays homage to those, both British and French, who strove to keep alive the flames of remembrance, mutual gratitude and friendship. Containing over 100 photographs and illustrated by 9 maps, specially draw for this edition, The Charge of the Bull is a nostalgic trip back for those who fought in Normandy in 1944 and an important addition to the litterature about that campaign.

-- In the mid-1970s, Michel Azim, architect at the Franco-Egyptian Centre for the Study of the Temples of Karnak, undertook the first large-scale archaeological explorations in the courtyard of the 10th pylon since the work of Georges Legrain at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite its importance, however, this operation has remained largely unpublished and the results of the work carried out have only been the subject of a few preliminary reports and notes. The present book concludes an ambitious program of inventory of the documentation of these excavations stored in several French and Egyptian institutions (Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée at Lyon, Franco-Egyptian Centre for the Study of the Temples of Karnak). All the results of the research carried out from 1975 to 1977 are re-evaluated here in the light of a stratigraphic evaluation test-pit undertaken in 2015-the archaeological material of which was analyzed by a dozen specialists. Although the restitution of the sequence of constructions and occupations of the 10th pylon courtyard remains very close to the one initially established by the excavator, recent analyses now make it possible to more precisely calibrate the chronology of the site, and thus prove essential to the study of Ancient Thebes. A long phase of settlement in the Middle Kingdom was followed by the construction and several rearrangements of the 10th pylon courtyard during the New Kingdom. Numerous later material traces indicate successive settlements in the courtyard in the 1st millennium BC, and above all a vast Paleochristian settlement in the 4th century AD. Finally, a few late attestations testify to a limited use of the area before it was abandoned in the Islamic period.

Andrea Sacchi and Cardinal del Monte. The Rediscovered Frescoes in the Palazzo di Ripetta in Rome

This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte's Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010-11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly - resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study aims to compare the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori ; to shed light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used ; and to integrate this key commission within Sacchi's early career. The cycle's iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation - above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte's Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.

Experiencing Same-Sex Marriage

This book provides an understanding of how the legal and cultural debates and advances and limitations on same-sex marriage are experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people, same-sex couples, and their social networks. Using data collected from hundreds of GLBT people, same-sex couples, and their social networks over the past decade, the book examines the following topics : same-sex marriages' impact on how GLBT individuals view their relationships and community ; same-sex couples' decision making regarding whether to marry or not ; the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their families-of-origin regarding same-sex marriage ; the same-sex marriage experiences of understudied members of the GLBT community ; and the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their social networks in locations with restrictions against legally recognized same-sex marriage. These findings are examined through the lens of the social scientific study of relationships. They are based on a communication studies perspective on personal relationships, and therefore emphasize communication concepts and theories relevant to the understanding of same-sex marriage experiences.

The Wolves Rise Again. New elites born out of chaos

The successive shocks that strike our time have acted as an indicator of men : the bland elites of yesteryear, suddenly rejected by the masses, went back silently into the void where they had first come from. This opportunist plutarchy, that maintained itself so far, thanks to the industry of lying, the targeted elimination of creative people, will soon be engulfed. Around these illusionists with no audience, the hidden alphas will begin to rise. Within a few months, alphas, forged in a new metal, invaded public space. How can it be explained ? In troubled times, the hierarchies of peacetime had left, suddenly, a place to the atomisation of individuals. Chaos then allows the individual alphas to rise to power. Like a pack of wolves, these alphas quickly take the lead of small human groups organising themselves into rival packs. The French Revolution is a striking example of this evolution : the masters of yesterday were relegated because of their unsuitability.

PIONEERS OF REPRESENTATION THEORY: FROBENIUS, BURNSIDE, SCHUR, AND BRAUER

The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius ( 1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory. They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-194 1) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration. This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view.

Dealing with the Devil

When Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union, Moscow officials expected the British Navy to appear on the shore of Leningrad, fulfilling the Bolshevik nightmare of a concerted Capitalist plot. Instead, Prime Minister Winston Churchill reached out to promise support to the Kremlin and collaborate with Britain's former archenemy. Fighting the Nazi menace together became the new priority, leading to unprecedented levels of cooperation between the two governments. In order to defeat the Nazis, Britain and the USSR shared intelligence and revealed operative secrets to each other, including those of the secretive security services. They helped with the dispatch of agents and even ran agents together, attempting to foil German counter-intelligence strategies. For much of the Cold War, crucial facts of this collaboration remained top secret. Based on recently declassified files, Dealing with the Devil explores this little known chapter of the Second World War. This study underscores the willingness of the USSR and Britain to join forces and disclose many of their closely guarded secrets. The book uses personnel files and other historical sources to reveal for the first time the activities of officers and agents on this "invisible front", recounting the actions of many brave men and women who risked their lives to defeat the Nazis.

Dogs. Authentic and fictitious graphic inventory

Dogs is a kennel of 200 drawings made by Jochen Gerner between 2021 and 2023, following his study of birds. Each of these dogs was drawn with pigmented Indian ink felt pens on small-format lined and squared school notebooks from China and India. This series of drawings follows the graphic experiment of Jochen Gerner to explore all the potentialities of the grids, lines and colours in the representation of textures and hair. Focusing on dogs, which Jochen Gerner represents in a touching and very funny multiplicity, this collection reveals us that hardly nothing is required on paper for these dogs to breathe, each of them in an outstanding singularity. Braces, squares, lozenges, waves... The colorful patterns cut and cross each other with a disconcerting, always innovative simplicity to make their hair shine and ripple. With this new bestiary holding as much of the illustration as of graphic design, Jochen Gerner invites us to a whimsical look at the world and proves us once again the singularity of his observation.

The Rural Novel

Comparative in scope and theoretical rather than historical in approach, this study develops new methods for discussion of the rural novel, combining the insights of rural sociologists with those of theoreticians of fiction. The main focus of attention is the nexus of relationships between narrator, characters and community. While recognizing that conflicts of purpose often arise in the rural novel, which may aim both to record a supposedly real community and to suggest a model of social life, this study reaffirms the genre's value as a challenge to unthinking acceptance of a linear model of human progress.

Lingua Legis in Translation

This book describes the historical development of the Polish and English lingua legis. The intention is to point out the major differences between the legal realities, which significantly affect the process of translation. Secondly, the following characteristic features of lingua legis, concerning the level of words and syntagmas, are touched upon : vocabulary used in lingua legis including technical and semi-technical terms, conservatism of legal texts (Latin and Latinisms ; synonymous strings, archaic adverbs etc.), borrowings, terms with non-precise meanings (the problem of indeterminacy), neologisms, euphemisms, vulgarisms, performative verbs, metaphors and religious elements, prepositional phrases, time expressions, compound nouns and the problems connected with nominalization, false cognates which cause major misunderstandings, and finally methods of providing translation equivalents. The problem of ambivalence is analysed as well. The problems connected with the Polish-English and English-Polish translation of the texts belonging to the following legal genres are examined : university diplomas and certificates, statutes, judgments, law reports, powers of attorney, petitions, contracts and deeds, testaments, birth, death and marriage certificates, and popular fiction.

Histoire de l'art

Paris Moderne, 1914-1945. Art - Design - Architecture - Photography - Literature - Cinema - Fashion

Whether at peace or at war, Paris during the first half of the twentieth century pulsated with frenzied energy. Creatives from across Europe flocked to the French capital where they had free rein to experiment with innovative forms of expression. Inspired by the challenge made possible through technological advances and market expectations, members from every artistic discipline-art, design, architecture, photography, fashion, and cinema-forged the new face of this resolutely modern city. A kaleidoscopic portrait of this exhilarating artistic surge is documented here in dictionary form, through biographical profiles of nearly one hundred leading creators, including Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Le Corbusier, Tamara de Lempicka, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Man Ray, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Helena Rubinstein, and Gertrude Stein. The richly illustrated volume is completed with a photographic journal of Paris today by Antonio Martinelli, retracing the incredible architectural and urban landscape that still bears the hallmarks of this wildly prodigious period. The External Relations of the European Union

The book analyses the attitudes of non-EU countries towards European integration in historical and contemporary perspectives. The authors study a range of actors in Europe and beyond to explain the impact of the creation of the European Communities on the international system and how the EU is perceived in the world. The book further shows the significance of the institutional interplay within the EU, and between EU institutions, member states and external actors led by their own internal dynamics to explain policy outcomes. It investigates to what extent the perceptions of the international community towards the European Communities and the EU have been influenced by the complexity of their decision-making and the difficulty of reconciling the views of member states on key external relations issues. The authors also study the interplay of non-EU countries and the EU within the broader context of international and regional institutions and forums for international cooperation.

How can one conceive of global legal transnationalism except as constituted by legal porosity ? This book brings together the perspectives of lawyers who are professors, practitioners and researchers from numerous countries. They offer ideas, as the case may be, theoretical and abstract, or pragmatic and specific. They speak in French or English rather than in translation, so that we may listen to them in their own voices.

Arrival of Mira, Love story between Bhojan and Mira

Arrival of Mira Foreword Arrival of Mira tells the story of a beautiful young woman who held true to her faith despite many severe hardships. Mira was still only a child when she decided that Ginidhara Gopal (Lord Krishna) was her 'husband' and that she wanted to devote her life to serving and worshipping him. Later, the now orphaned Mira was married to Bhojan, the prince of Mewar and son of Rana, the king of Chittoor. Bhojan fell in love at first sight but found it hard to understand Mira's utter devotion to Ginidhara. Mira suffered at the hands of her in-laws who could not understand the depth of her love for Ginidhara and wanted her to follow their worship of Kali (in the form of Durga). Mira suffered imprisonment in a haunted palace and then exile for her beliefs. Even her friends were persecuted because of her uncompromising love for Lord Krishna. Eventually Bhojan came to understand his wife's piety. The story is told in the form of a musical play where the love story is interwoven with delightful songs and dances. The character of Mira is one to win the hearts of all who read of her. Her gentle devotion and steadfast belief are an inspiration to everyone. Thank you, Dr Shuddhananda Bharati for having made this beautiful story available to us. Daye Craddock Editions ASSA, Christian Piaget

Conjugal Love and the Ends of Marriage

The importance of conjugal love in marriage, allegedly overlooked by pre-conciliar marriage doctrine, is strikingly emphasized by present-day Catholic Church documents. The stable incorporation of conjugal love into Catholic marriage doctrine finds its roots in the Second Vatican Council's Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the modern world, Gaudium et spes. During the elaboration of the chapter on marriage and the family in Gaudium et spes, it was observed that its third conciliar draft, textus recognitus, contained ideas which are similar to what Dietrich von Hildebrand and Herbert Doms had pronounced during the 1930s. Some theologians and canonists, in fact, have opined that these authors paved the way for the personalist treatment of marriage in this century by underlining the importance of conjugal love. Others have even asserted that the Gaudium et spes doctrine on marriage is the confirmation of Doms's thought. What accounts for the shift towards an emphasis on conjugal love in the theological presentation of marriage ? What did these two authors understand by it and how did they articulate the matrimonial ends ? How were their ideas received by the theologians and by the Church ? To what extent and in what ways are their ideas reflected in the conciliar document ? This book probes these questions which are fundamental to understanding the evolution of the Catholic doctrinal presentation of marriage.
