The Rural Novel
Comparative in scope and theoretical rather than historical in approach, this study develops new methods for discussion of the rural novel, combining the insights of rural sociologists with those of theoreticians of fiction. The main focus of attention is the nexus of relationships between narrator, characters and community. While recognizing that conflicts of purpose often arise in the rural novel, which may aim both to record a supposedly real community and to suggest a model of social life, this study reaffirms the genre's value as a challenge to unthinking acceptance of a linear model of human progress.

The Moment
Written representations of momentary phenomena such as the Fall, the kairos, epiphany, the nunc stans, the sublime, dialectical and historical moments of change and moments of deferral are always doomed to fail. However, representational failures at writing have always been turned into a performative success : more writing. The author's reading of the various textualizations of the moment is not historical, but genealogical (Foucault) and not typological, but economical (Derrida); it reveals the moment as an inevitable trope : the deconstruction of a representational moment in a given text reinscribes this moment as the text's performative momentum. This ever shifting meaning of the moment has been followed through literary and philosophical texts from Plato to Beckett.

Pedagogic Design and Literary Form in the Work of Adalbert Stifter
This investigation brings to light the fundamental significance of literary form as the chief mediator of Stifter's pedagogic endeavour, an aspect so far neglected in Stifter literature. It opposes the widely held view that Stifter's pedagogic incentive is a result of the Austrian revolution of 1848. While Stifter's pedagogic thought stems primarily from his Kremsmünster education in the spirit of Josephinism, it is his increasingly sensitive and respectful involvement of the reader's perceptive powers in conveying the import which, far beyond the expression of pedagogic design in terms of moral and social maxims, reveals Stifter's originality as a pedagogic writer.

Mass Culture Criticism and 'Dissent' by Lou Anne Bulik offers a provocative new look at the debate over mass culture in American magazines during the post World War II years. Bulik traces the influence of the Frankfurt School's analysis of mass culture on American intellectuals ; explores the course of the mass culture discussion in Politics, Partisan Review, Daedalus, Diogenes, and Dissent ; and suggests that Dissent's approach to the issue differed substantially from that of other magazines. Because Dissent focused on the impact of mass culture on the mind, Bulik suggests that the debate in Dissent was actually an attempt to articulate the presentiment that mass culture, particularly through the paradigm of television, would change patterns of thought and understanding. The study concludes with a look at recent criticism which lends newfound weight to Dissent's discussion of mass culture in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Educational Assistance and School Development in Sierra Leone
The subject of foreign assistance in education for developing countries has gained increasing importance in the last twenty years. The fact that the efforts of both donors and recipients of assistance have not been entirely satisfying has resulted in repeated appeals for intensified scientific investigation into this area. This study represents a response to those appeals from the point of view of an educationist from a recipient country (Sierra Leone).Using historical and field investigations, case studies of three representative agencies were conducted between 1988 and 1989 : a multilateral (UNESCO), a bilateral (British) and a private (Baptist Church).The results indicate that both the approach and goals of aid agencies as well as the degree of involvement of target groups leave a lot to be desired. On the basis of these results, recommendations are made for future cooperation.

Ces simples questions nous rappellent que les sons et leurs interprétations font l'objet de constructions culturelles. Cacophonie et musique, bruit et silence sont au coeur d'un ouvrage qui se propose, pour l'Orient, l'Egypte, les mondes grecs et romains antiques, d'explorer les manières dont les perceptions acoustiques étaient alors nommées, ressenties, construites et interprétées. Les hommes et les femmes de l'Antiquité entendaient-ils comme nous ? Etaient-ils sensibles à certaines sonorités plutôt qu'à d'autres ? Ces simples questions nous rappellent que les sons et leurs interprétations sont inscrits dans des constructions culturelles, à tel point que la définition même de la cacophonie et de la musique, du bruit et du silence, change en fonction des époques et des contextes. L'historicité de ces notions est au coeur de l'ouvrage qui se propose, pour l'Egypte, l'Orient, les mondes grecs et romains antiques, de décrypter les perceptions acoustiques des Anciens en cherchant à comprendre comment les sons, ou leur absence, deviennent signifiants. Derrière l'ampleur de l'arc chronologique se trouve un objet commun, l'étude du vocabulaire et des expressions qui relèvent du champ sémantique du son. Which sonorities were particularly significant to them ? Those simple questions remind us that the sounds as well as their possible interpretations belong to cultural constructions, so that the definitions of cacophony and music, of noise and silence, vary with times and from one context to another. The historicity of such usual notions is at the heart of the book, which sets out, for the ancient Eastern, Egyptian, Greek and Roman worlds, to explore the ways in which the sounds or their absence become meaningful. Behind the breadth of the chronological arc lies a common object, the study of terms and expressions related to sounds. The book provides an analysis of this corpus in a historical approach nourished by anthropology of sound. All the papers collected here invite the reader to listen carefully to ancient words and, by focusing on ancient discourses, reveal all the complexity of social, political and religious values carried by sounds in particular settings.

Logic: Mathematics, Language, Computer Science and Philosophy
In Logic Programming (25 and 26) the language of logic is used as a declarative programming language. Prolog uses resolution as its underlying proof mechanism. The logical structure of relational databases is explained (27) in set theoretical terms and it is shown how the language of set theory can be used as a Structured Query Language (SQL). Computability, Undecidability and Complexity are treated in sections 28, 29, and 30, respectively, in terms of Turing machines. The undecidability of the validity problem for predicate logic and the NP-completeness of the satisfiability problem for propositional logic are shown in a similiar way. Chomsky's notion of grammar and its relation to the notion of automation is presented in section 31. Both untyped and typed lambda calculus are treated in sections 32 and 33, respectively. The role epistemic logic can play in the description of distributed systems is explained (34). In section 35 and 36, temporal logic is used both for verification by hand and for automatic verification. A tableaux-based automated theorem prover for classical logic is elaborated in the Appendix. Each section ends with a number of exercises ; the answers can be found at the end of this book.

Basis of this reformulation is the growth cycle model of Goodwin which is extended in various ways in the pursuit of this aim. German colonisation in Samoa from 1900 to 1914 was characterised by the interplay of conflicting definitions of race. The central question this study asks is to what extent, and in which ways, ideologies of race shaped German colonial policy in Samoa. It analyses the administration's paternalist development policies, debates over white settlement, the introduction and treatment of indentured labourers, and the legal classification of mixed marriages and half-castes. The author argues that rather than uniting the colonising community in a racist mission of domination, racial thought amplified the fissures in German Samoa's population and supported the administration's Realpolitik.
