Mais avant de toucher les antipodes, il lui faudra affronter une épidémie de typhus en Atlantique, puis, au large du cap de Bonne-Espérance, un énorme bâtiment hollandais qui l'oblige à descendre très au sud et, après s'en être débarrassé au terme d'un combat dantesque, à faire relâche aux Kerguelen, l'île de la Désolation. Fortune de guerre Aubrey a enfin atteint Botany Bay où l'envoyait sa mission. De là, il part pour Java où la frégate La Flèche l'embarque pour le ramener - avec Maturin et leurs habituels compagnons - en Angleterre. Un incendie survenu à bord en fait des naufragés. Recueillis par la frégate anglaise Java, ils doivent faire face à la frégate américaine Constitution. En effet, l'état de guerre règne à nouveau entre la vieille Angleterre et les jeunes Etats-Unis. Capturés, ils débarquent à Boston d'où ils s'enfuient pour passer à Halifax, au Canada. La Citadelle de la Baltique A la suite de demêlés sanglants avec les services secrets américains et français, Aubrey et Maturin traversent l'Atlantique et rejoignent l'Angleterre après avoir échappé à deux goélettes corsaires américaines. Ils reçoivent pour mission de débarquer dans une forteresse ennemie stratégiquement située en mer Baltique (qui permet l'accès aux stocks de bois nécessaires à la construction navale), afin de la faire abandonner par sa garnison... catalane. Mission accomplie, c'est en transportant ces troupes vers l'Espagne que Aubrey fait naufrage sur la côte bretonne. Capturés, Maturin et lui se retrouvent prisonniers de l'armée française. Venetian Disegno : New Frontiers circa 1420 to 1620 offers a fresh perspective on the art of Venice and the Veneto. The volume brings together the contributions of scholars and curators specialist on a wide variety of artists and art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and architecture. Venetian Disegno : New Frontiers circa 1420 to 1620 takes disegno as its central theme, that in its plurality of meaning allows for a consideration of the conceptual role of design and the act of drawing. The relationship between disegno and Renaissance Venetian art has historically been a problematic one, with emphasis instead being placed on the Venetian predilection for colore. This volume is reflective of an ongoing challenge to this perspective and draws attention to the importance of Venetian disegno and the study of drawings for understanding various art forms. The book commences with a critical study of what constitutes disegno in Venetian art. It does so through questioning the historiography of Venetian artistic scholarship and the restrictive framework and preconceptions that have emerged before setting out the merits of a broader, more inclusive approach. Disegno is applied in its multifaceted nature to address the physical act of drawing, the tangible drawn object and the role of design in artistic practice. The term 'Venetian' is taken to encompass both Venice and its mainland territories not least because of the mobility of artists across and beyond the region. Contributions are divided into five thematic sections. The first, entitled 'Peripheries', frames the art of Venice within a wider discourse on the movement of ideas across and beyond the Veneto in locations including Padua, Verona and Rome. A section on Media considers the origins and innovations that took place in the use of materials such as blue paper, oil and coloured chalks. In another, the theories that have developed on Venetian notions of disegno are brought under scrutiny, addressing topics such as the long upheld perspective that Venetian artists did not draw, the role of sculpture in Tintoretto's drawing practice and the interrelation between the written and drawn line in Palma Giovane's draftsmanship. The section on Invention reflects on the technical innovations that were facilitated through the uptake of printmaking and the intellectual freedom granted by humanist patrons. Finally, Function gets to the heart of the practical purpose of disegno. Contributions focus on the workshops of the Bellini family and Titian to consider the diverse ways they used drawing within their artistic practices with an emphasis on technical analysis. These sections are all preceded by introductions that provide an overview on each theme while the volume is bookended by two reflections on the state of research into Venetian disegno and the potential for further progress. Sumptuously illustrated with over 100 images with a comprehensive bibliography, Venetian Disegno : New Frontiers circa 1420 to 1620 represents a significant contribution to scholarship on the art of Venice, Renaissance workshops and drawing studies.

What does well-being mean when we talk about men and women in the past ? Their sheer chances of survival, their protection from want, their social status, their individual agency and their self-esteem were all strongly mediated by the family, the predominant social institution. Within families, there were strong differences in autonomy, status and freedom between the genders and generations. Western European Integration in the 1980s
The Single European Act was formally approved by the European Council in February 1986. When Maastricht hit the headlines in the early 1990s, the Single European Act instantly became history. However, it was the Single Market programme - the main content of the Single European Act - and the years of preparation leading up to it which really gave new momentum to European integration after the "Eurosclerosis" of the 1970s. The process which led to the Single European Act was never publicly discussed. The architects and initiators of the Single Market have not become household names, however, it is these protagonists and their efforts which are the subject of this book. With information gathered from extensive interviews with key players and EC documentation, the author reviews the forces behind the acceleration of European integration.

Russell's confidence was confirmed by the result of his analysis of perception and physics. This book examines three different theories that Russell used in an effort to provide a lasting solution to the problem of perception and its relation with the external world. Despite the merits of Russell's attempts, the author is convinced that Russell failed to achieve his aim, but that his failure points the way to a better understanding of the nature and purpose of philosophy.

The Great Good Place?
Ever since Arthur Conan Doyle's hawk-faced detective Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler Dr Watson followed the advice of Horace, to seek truth "inter silvas Academi", the groves of Academus have been swept by a wave of violence. Judging from the impressive number of bodies discovered on American and British campuses in fiction, it does not seem far-fetched to draw the conclusion that behind the Eden-like façade of the Great Good Place each of the seven Deadly Sins is enjoyed to the full. Looking back on almost nine decades of college mystery novels, the genre has certainly lost none of its appeal. Wilmotte - Murano
This book, published in the wake of the "Agua e fogo" - "Water and Fire" - exhibition, highlights the work of French designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte in collaboration with Murano's glassblowers and craftsmen. Wilmotte's " Vessels " collection is a blend of nostalgia and modernity. Its 60 creations (chandeliers, table lamps, wall lamps, vases) are inspired by the designer's childhood memories of contemplating his father's pharmaceutical laboratory. This volume asserts that there was tacit cooperation in the Nazi extermination of the Jewish population of Europe by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Second World War. Although the Allies publicly recognized the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the London Declaration of December 17, 1942, the policies they pursued allowed the genocide to continue. They did so, the author claims, in three ways : (1) refusal to publicly and personally speak about and against the Nazi extermination of the Jews ; (2) refusal to commit even one soldier, one plane, or one warship to any forcible opposition to the "Final Solution" throughout the Second World War ; and (3) obstruction of Jewish escape from Hitler's Europe. This book explores the motivation for the policies Churchill and Roosevelt pursued.

Mediation - A Necessary Element in Family Dispute Resolution?
Mediation as a method of alternative dispute resolution is gaining increased attention in a growing number of legal areas. In Australian law family counselling was developed to deal with issues related to family disputes. It is brought in prior to court settlement of disputes and thus integrated into the system of conflict resolution. The characteristics and use of alternative dispute resolution call into question the role of the court as the sole forum for institutionalised conflict resolution. For this reason the transferability of the concept of mediation into the German legal system needs to be examined. In particular, it needs to be measured against the yardstick of the German Constitution, which by granting basic substantive and procedural rights, sets out the demands a modern state of law makes on a method of conflict resolution.

This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Nikolaj Gumilev and Neoclassical Modernism
Nikolaj Gumilev occupies a paradoxical place within the history of Russian modernism. Although he is well known as the founder of Acmeism and is regarded as an important poet and critic, much of his work is difficult to reconcile with prevailing concepts of modernism. The present study seeks to explain this marginal position by reinterpreting Gumilev's work within the broader context of a modernist aesthetic of order, or "neo-classical modernism." The term refers to an aesthetic line within modernism that sought to reconcile certain features of traditional rhetoric - in particular the triadic style system - with modernist strategies of innovation. Although primarily devoted to Gumilev, the study also touches on Russian and French writers adhering to comparable aesthetic values, among them Annenskij, Kuzmin, Gautier, Leconte de Lisle, Valéry and Gide.

This book forms the complement to the first volume published in 2000. The preface contains some remarks about the transmission of the text as a supplement to the first volume. Then follow the critical edition of books VI-X, and the indices for the whole text. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.

For our main interview, we're talking to one of the most respected British creatives and currently D&AD President, Naresh Ramchandani. The interview with him is titled The chance to make the world more progressive. Finally, the cover of this issue is another masterpiece of the Bangkok based digital wizzards from Illusion, for agency Dentsu Redder and client Ho Chi Minh City.

Depuis les années 50, Monsieur Hulot est un personnage qui s'est définitivement inscrit dans la mémoire populaire ; et son créateur, Jacques Tati, fait désormais partie du panthéon des cinéastes de renommée mondiale. Le premier ouvrage sur le droit social dans les procédures collectives. Cet ouvrage contient une étude approfondie de l'intersection existant entre le droit social et le droit des entreprises en difficulté. Est d'abord exposée la place des salariés dans le droit des entreprises en difficulté, tant dans la prévention, que dans les procédures collectives. Puis sont présentées les règles relatives au contrat de travail dans les diverses phases des procédures collectives : période d'observation, plans et liquidation judiciaire. Sont étudiées la continuation, la cession et la rupture du contrat de travail, avec la question essentielle des licenciements économiques. L'ouvrage s'intéresse ensuite aux créances salariales, à leur traitement, leur fixation au passif et à leur garantie de paiement, spécialement celle de la couverture des créances salariales par l'Association de gestion des créances salariales (AGS). Enfin, l'ouvrage expose la question des instances prud'homales, qu'elles soient entamées avant ou après le jugement d'ouverture d'une procédure collective. La rencontre du droit social et du droit des entreprises fait naître des problèmes complexes. Ceux-ci sont aggravés par l'effervescence législative dans les deux domaines du droit social et du droit des entreprises en difficulté. Complexité et mouvance des deux matières au centre de l'ouvrage rendent d'autant plus utile un outil permettant de rendre accessible et compréhensible le droit social dans son application au droit des entreprises en difficulté. C'est l'ambition de cet ouvrage. L'ouvrage est original en ce qu'il constitue la première étude pratique et théorique à destination des praticiens du droit social de l'entreprise en difficulté.
