Morgan was a passionate collector and spent years of his life acquiring exquisite works of art. He had a discerning eye and discriminating taste, and his driving motivation was to find works of quality and beauty. His Greek and Roman bronzes include a range of figure and vessel types : males and females, gods and mortals, humans and animals and hybrid mythological creatures, free-standing statuettes, and furniture embellishments. This is the first exhibition and publication to consider the bronzes as a group. Morgan chose each work of art for its exquisite craftsmanship, its quality of composition and execution, and its preservation. These objects represent the very best of ancient Mediterranean bronze sculpture, with carefully rendered clothing, hair, and fur, and adorned with inlays of silver and other luxury materials. Showcasing different types of objects and figures that were made in bronze in the ancient world, this exhibition and book demonstrate the high level of quality that these works of art could achieve. This book describes the historical development of the Polish and English lingua legis. The intention is to point out the major differences between the legal realities, which significantly affect the process of translation. Secondly, the following characteristic features of lingua legis, concerning the level of words and syntagmas, are touched upon : vocabulary used in lingua legis including technical and semi-technical terms, conservatism of legal texts (Latin and Latinisms ; synonymous strings, archaic adverbs etc.), borrowings, terms with non-precise meanings (the problem of indeterminacy), neologisms, euphemisms, vulgarisms, performative verbs, metaphors and religious elements, prepositional phrases, time expressions, compound nouns and the problems connected with nominalization, false cognates which cause major misunderstandings, and finally methods of providing translation equivalents. The problem of ambivalence is analysed as well. The problems connected with the Polish-English and English-Polish translation of the texts belonging to the following legal genres are examined : university diplomas and certificates, statutes, judgments, law reports, powers of attorney, petitions, contracts and deeds, testaments, birth, death and marriage certificates, and popular fiction.

The paintings of the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte (1898-1967) have exerted an extraordinary fascination, particularly since the enormous increase in awareness and popularity of his work during the 1960s. Magritte shows us a world of silence and isolation in which familiar objects are altered or juxtaposed in 'impossible' combinations in order to create a sense of disorientation and the absurd. Many of his most memorable paintings date from his three prolific years 1927-30, when he lived near Paris and was in close touch with the writer André Breton and other French Surrealists. In his pre-war painting, stylistic concerns were of secondary importance to Magritte, and for the most part he concentrated on the relation between objects and words or between the image of an object and the object itself. He deliberately cultivated a cold, unemotive, 'style-less' style. This quality renders the violence and macabre sexuality of some of his works all the more disturbing. His own 'impressionist' and critics keenly responsive to the later work of other masters of parody and allusion such as Picabia and de Chirico.

In many countries (part of) the rental housing market is subject to regulations concerning determination of rent and security of tenure. The author provides fresh theoretical analysis of these measures by taking into account special features of the housing market, like indivisibility, mobility cost and incomplete contracts. The impact a rent ceiling has on contracting, the allocation of the housing stock, rationing cost and on rents in the free housing sector is examined. In some cases tenure laws provide for tenure security and rules for the updating of rent while leaving the initial rent for new leases freely negotiable. The analysis shows that the efficiency of the market could be improved through this type of regulation.

Inspired by the microhistory trend, this book sets out to illustrate how 150 years of the unique history of a family of winegrowers is embedded in-and contributes to-the larger history of Burgundy crus. The book will explore the developments in techniques and knowledge about grapevines and wine that have taken place between 1872 to 2022, providing readers with a better understanding of the issues relating to designations of origin (appellations) and the notion of terroir. This study represents an attempt to assess the critical impact of Dickens' work in Germany from the appearance of The Pickwick Papers till his death in 1870. Its main aim is to place the ongoing engagement of German critics with the English novelist in the context of the social and literary-critical tensions of the time and to bring about a new, more differentiated and penetrating understanding of his influence in these decades. The author argues that all the significant attempts to define the function and possibilities of the contemporary novel in German in this period were linked in one way or another with critical attitudes to the hugely popular, but always intractably controversial work of the English novelist.

Whereas many books in this field deal with individual aspects or texts of the study of family laws, Leviticus : The Priestly Laws and Prohibitions from the Perspective of Ancient Near East and Africa examines extensively biblical texts, ancient Near Eastern text, and oral traditions from Africa. Thus, three different cultures converge : the world of the Hebrew Bible, the world of the ancient Near East, and the world of Africa. Sur cette gravure, le dieu norrois Thor est présenté comme le dieu du Kaiser allemand, détruisant des cathédrales gothiques et ainsi la civilisation. Thor symbolisait ainsi la nature prétendument barbare des Allemands. Cet article se propose de cartographier les chemins et opérations historiques qui conduisirent le dieu nordique Thor de l'Islande du XIIIe siècle en France du XXe siècle en le transformant en symbole de l'hostilité allemande. Des contextes importants sont l'Anneau de Nibelung de Richard Wagner et tout particulièrement la philologie comparée. Cette pièce, extrêmement difficile à jouer, est favorable à toutes les confusions ou erreurs d'interprétation possibles, pièce dont il est permis d'avancer qu'Ibsen n'est jamais allé aussi loin dans sa quête du tragique. Cet article cherche à élucider les modalités et les raisons d'un tel chef-d'oeuvre dans une perspective moderniste. Sans entrer dans la discussion sur le post-tragique, il s'agit de cerner ce qui fait en soi l'originalité moderne de cette étrange pièce. Ce projet l'amène à s'intéresser d'abord à la modernité jouissive et émancipatrice des années folles, ensuite à la montée du totalitarisme en Europe et, après ce tournant dysphorique, aux pays de l'Amérique latine, jugés capables de transcender les conflits européens. Les récits de voyage de Paavolainen produisent ainsi un décentrement de la modernité ; en même temps, ils expriment la crise de la subjectivité de l'auteur, fondée sur l'idéal européen du cosmopolitisme. Le long chef-d'oeuvre de Tammsaare, écrit durant l'après-guerre et retraçant 50 ans d'histoire de l'Estonie, apparaît comme une synthèse extraordinairement originale de plusieurs genres européens différents parmi lesquels un roman rural dans sa première partie et un roman du Crime et du Châtiment, sorte de tragédie familiale du péché originel ; mais on remarque aussi de fortes analogies avec trois formes de romans d'éducation : un roman pédagogique tragi-comique à l'Ecole de M. Maurus, le roman d'une éducation sentimentale douloureuse et par-dessus tout un roman de la transformation d'un jeune homme qui vient de son village en intellectuel avec son ironie dévastatrice contre toutes les valeurs sociales et religieuses, sa "conscience malheureuse" et ses engagements à demi forcés dans la vie politique ou dans sa vie privée qui rappellent d'autres grands romans contemporains, de Musil, de Proust, de Thomas Mann et de Svevo. In 1915, the Epinal printing company, known for its often amusing illustrated one page prints, published a summary of the first year of the First World War, depicting the Old Norse God Thor as the god of the German Kaiser, destroying gothic cathedrals and thus civilization. Thor thus served as symbol for the supposedly barbarous nature of the Germans. In my article, I try to map some of the ways and historical operations that took the Old Norse god Thor from 13th century Iceland to 20th century France and transformed him to a symbol for German warfare. Major contexts appear to be Richard Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung and particularly comparative philology. These observations, I propose, could serve as a starting point for a theory of narrating forms of social knowledge in cultural circulation. In the opinion of all the experts, Rosmersholm (1886) is the masterpiece of Ibsen, even though it is neither the most famous nor the most frequently performed of his plays. One may wonder why. This piece, extremely difficult to play, supports all the confusions and errors of interpretation possible, and it is permitted to put forward that Ibsen never went as far in his tragedy quest. This article seeks to clarify how and why such a masterpiece in a modernist perspective. Without going into the discussion of the post-tragic, we try to identify what is in itself modern originality of this strange room. A prolific female writer belonging to the Swedish "genombrott" movement and a staunch feminist, Anne Charlotte Leffler, whose plays were even more successful than Strindberg's, slowly disappeared from Scandinavian literature anthologies. Did male critics expel her from them, as researchers in "gender studies" began to claim in the 1970s ? Or was it that her works were thought to be too old-fashioned ? Her theatre has been recently re-discovered, in Sweden as well as in France : it is high time to put again into perspective this "forgotten one" , who has still many things to say. In the 1920s and 30s, the Finnish writer Olavi Paavolainen (1903-1964) took up the task of exploring and analysing modernity in all its manifestations and in all the places where it was felt. This project focalised first on the emancipatory and joyful modernity of the années folles, then on the rising of totalitarism in Europe and, after this dysphoric turn, on Latin America, considered capable of transcending the European conflicts. Paavolainen's travelogues produce thus a decentring of modernity, while leading at the same to the crisis of the author's subjectivity, based on the European ideal of cosmopolitism. Tammsaare's long masterpiece, written after the first world war and retracing 50 years of Estonian history, is an extraordinary and original synthesis of several different literary European genres among which in its first part a "Rural Novel" and also a novel of "Crime and Punishment", a kind of Tragedy of Original Sin in a family but there is also a strong analogy between Taamsaare's Justice and Truth and three kinds of Educational Novels : a tragi-comical pedagogical novel in Mr Maurus's College, a painful sentimental apprenticeship and above all the novel of a young man coming from his village who becomes an "Intellectual" with his devastating irony against all social and religious values, his "Unhappy Consciousness" and his half forced bad commitments in political or private life which recall other great contemporary novels by Musil, Proust, Thomas Mann, Svevo. This paper examines, from the part of the Swedish writer Per Olov Enquist, Till Fedra, terms and issues of this cultural transfer : the rewriting of the famous tragedy of Racine. Using scientific resources of imagology and ethnocritic, this paper shows the various operations of what we called a "shift model" through the deconstruction of the French language, the oedipalization of the myth, the image transfer and the movement concepts. Even though francophone literature is expanding its territory throughout the world, its status remains ambiguous on the global field and in canonization processes. The analysis is focusing on a re-evaluation of the literary canon in the academic context abroad. Various didactic demands are revealed as essential criteria for a selection divergent from the traditional canon. It is also found that Swedish universities promote both French high-status literature, extra-occidental francophone literature and prize-winning literature, which is often commercial.

The present volume is a collection of studies devoted to major issues in contemporary syntax and semantics : in particular, argument structure, ellipsis, negation and scope. The papers included, which represent a number of formally rigorous contemporary frameworks, bring out new facts from a large variety of languages as well as novel solutions to a broad range of analytic puzzles. Part One illustrates the major ways in which argument structure is used and conceptualized. Part Two provides new perspectives on ellipsis, applying concepts and tools developed for focus, questions and quantification. Part Three introduces a number of novel proposals for the representation of scope, considerably enlarging the empirical domain of scope relations. These studies are unusual in that they combine an enthusiasm for detailed syntactic and semantic data and a serious concern for formal rigor. They discuss data from a wide variety of languages, including Japanese, Bulgarian, French, Greek, English, Italian, German, Hungarian, Inuit and Western Austronesian languages. The main themes of the book include negation, argument structure, ellipsis, indefinites, telicity, presuppositions, modality and quantification.

This study of diachronic variation addresses two topics, the development of modal auxiliaries can (could), may (might), shall (should) and will (would), and the emergence of early American English as a new variety in the seventeenth century. Within the framework of socio-historical variation analysis, the author aims at accounting for diachronic change by examining the interplay of various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors in the light of evidence drawn from various corpora. The study concentrates on the language spoken and written in the New England area between 1620 and 1720, but to widen the scope in time and region, counterparts for comparison are found in the material included in the Helsinki Corpus of English Texts. The results indicate a gradual change (rather than a sudden re-structuring) in the system of the English modals from early stages on. Cumulative evidence is found for the rise of the forms can and will ; in early American English conservative (rather than innovative) tendencies characterize the development.

This book offers a significant, original and timely contribution to the study of one of the most important and notorious Latin American authors of the twentieth century : Reinaldo Arenas. The text engages with the many extraordinary intersections created between Arenas' writing, the autobiographical construction of the literary subject and the exilic condition. Through focusing on texts written on the island of Cuba and in exile, the author analyses the ways in which Arenas' writing emblemises a complex process of identification with, and rejection of, his homeland – always an imagined place and which is, as the place of his origins, intrinsically related to the maternal. She examines how the maternal and the motherland are conflated and how the narrator-protagonists' identification is always in relation to, and dependent upon, this dominant motif. Despite the considerable amount of scholarship on Mann's work, his tetralogy – composed prior to and during his exile from Nazi Germany – has received less attention and has not been examined from the perspective of the relationship of visuality to narrative. In this study of Mann's reworking of the biblical account of Jacob, father of Joseph, the author examines the ways the novel's protagonists frame their environment through knowledge and meaning gained via specific acts of seeing. While considering Mann's oft-stated intent to refunctionalize myth by means of psychology for humane and progressive purposes, the book explores the lavish narrative attention Mann gives to visual detail, visual stimulation, the protagonists' eyes, ways of seeing, and even to staging and performance in anticipation of another's way of seeing. The results reveal that the plot of the first Joseph novel is carried and propelled by a series of visual encounters during which the narrative draws attention to the protagonists' eyes and acts of looking.

A series of intertextual short stories by Joyce Carol Oates, published in 1972, constitutes the subject-matter of the present work. Having entered into ‘literary marriages' with beloved masters, such as Kafka, Joyce, Thoreau, Flaubert, James and Chekhov, Oates has ‘re-imagined' their classic masterpieces.
