Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to "the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestone", according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017. Scripts and Communication for Relationships
Over 200 years ago, Jane Austen, an astute observer of the rituals of late-eighteenth-century courtship wrote that a happy marriage was the result of chance. Modern relationship researchers have revealed that scripts concerning pair bonding rituals are actually constituted in a manner so as to leave little to chance when romantic attachments are formed, intensify, and sometimes dissolve. In this introductory text, the authors discuss the basis of relationship scripts, emotions, imagery, and physiology of relationships including romance, friendship, work associates, mentors, and Facebook friends. They argue that people's expectations for relational development influence their communication, faith, and commitment in relationships. Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radio broadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. Suite No. 1 is an interesting hybrid that conveys the most modern compositional structure in the genre of light music. Schmid composed it shortly after the end of his year as a master student of Schönberg in Berlin. Like his other works of the time, its unusual instrumentation already shows an effort to move on from classical "high forms" and compose in looser structures, with the free use of the twelve-tone technique providing inner coherence. "Dance", "Waltz", "March" are linked by two inserted "Intermezzi" and introduced by an "Introduction". Not all movements require full instrumentation and are designed for solo rather than group performance. "Being Russian born I have a strong connection to the ballet scores of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and as a result in the Wild Swans, more than in any other work of mine, I allowed myself the freedom to roam through 200 years of musical genres, ranging from Hungarian Operetta through folk music and even including the influences of jazz and popular music, " says Elena Kats-Chernin. The full-length work, which premiered in Sydney in 2003, was written for choreographer Meryl Tankard after the two artists had already worked together for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games, and became one of the composer's greatest successes. Many excerpts in various arrangements have a concert life of their own today - including the world-renowned Eliza Aria. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his "Experiment in Modern Music" concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin's two-piano short-score manuscript. Combining the best elements of both geometric and Russian ornament, here are 374 of the infinite number of geometric designs that can be formed from a simple combination of lines with curves, selected from the work of the Russian designer Y. Chernikov.
The designs show dozens of different types of ornament and their intricate combinations and subdivisions: continuous and ribbon-like bands, enclosed spaces (panels), and unlimited flat patterns; networks, band motifs, diaper patterns; sectors, polygons and stars; squares and their subdivisions; octagons, triangles and hexagons; rhomboids and trapezoids; the circle and its subdivisions; etc. Designs range from simple black-and-white flat ornamentation to complex interweavings and tube-like maze figures. Some of the more important designs appear in full-page illustrations, while others are grouped together to show variations on a single element.
The peculiarly Russian influence on these designs is everywhere apparent-motifs stemming from the combination of primitive Russian folklore (seen in those delightful birds, fantastic animals and skirted figures found even today in Russian folk art) and the Byzantine style with the Christian influence brought to Russia by the Tartars between 1237 and 1480.
Others sec modern mathematics and its extension into op-art as the major inspiration of Chernikov's work, but whatever the source, the uses in today's art are almost limitless. Without further payment, permission or acknowledgment, you may use the designs in such media as textiles, crewel-work and needlework patterns, ornamental tiles, magazine, book and record cover art, greeting cards, and commercial packaging. The illustrations can serve equally well as a source of inspiration to the fine artist.
