Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. Malaise dans l'animalisme... How to Murder Your Pet est un manuel de pur sadisme qui décrit vingt-quatre modes sophistiqués de mise à mort d'un animal domestique. L'humour à rebrousse-poil de cette série nage à contre-courant de l'époque et s'adresse à un public avisé : tout ceci n'est drôle que considéré avec distance. Bien sûr, n'essayez surtout pas de reproduire ces expériences à la maison ! Subversion ultime, la cruauté envers les animaux reste un parfait tabou, probablement l'un des bastions les plus défendus de la moralité. C'était vrai en 1978 quand Steve Gianakos a dessiné cette série, ça l'est encore plus aujourd'hui que la commission des lois de l'Assemblée nationale a reconnu aux animaux la qualité " d'êtres vivants doués de sensibilité " et que la cause animale est prônée dans tous les programmes politiques (sans d'ailleurs qu'aucun canard ou chaton ne s'insurge de la récupération ! ). En outre, How to Murder Your Pet ne met pas à mort un simple animal, mais un animal de compagnie de surcroît ! Humour noir garanti... Au fil des dessins au trait dans lequel Gianakos exerce toute son habileté graphique et percutante, la série décrit des pratiques aussi barbares que drôles, se délectant de subtilités cruelles. Les sophistications de Sade sont revisitées version american way of life : tout le catalogue du confort moderne y passe - grille-pain, frigo, sèche-chemise, voiture, etc. - autant d'objets qui constituent, on l'oublie souvent, des armes par destination.

Xanax saved my life
Quelle arnaque ! Je nais en bonne santé, et pourtant, treize ans plus tard, une sclérose en plaques est diagnostiquée. C'est la maladie qui va dicter mes rêves et faire de ma vie un enfer. Dix ans après, je ne parviens pas à marcher correctement en raison de tremblements dus aux benzodiazépines... Occulter la maladie et vivre sereinement cette existence dont personne ne veut, n'aurait pas été possible sans mon Xanax, le meilleur ami d'une reine sous pilules pailletées. Il est plus simple de faire face aux déceptions furtives qui s'invitent sans prévenir. Je ne voulais pas retourner à la réalité bien trop sombre, au désespoir, à l'épuisement et à l'addiction au Xanax. Alors, m'a-t-il sauvé ou a-t-il permis d'envelopper mes maux dans une jolie ouate ? Aujourd'hui, je suis en fauteuil roulant, l'avantage est que je peux chausser des escarpins à talons sans avoir mal aux pieds ! Ma mère me motive à avancer et j'affronte le quotidien à quatre roues. Le regard des autres est parfois difficile, mais est sans commune mesure quant à ma peine de ne pouvoir marcher et celle de devoir rester en vases clos quasiment durant une année. Aujourd'hui, j'ai la chance de pouvoir prendre l'air frais de là-bas.
