De Libau à Diên Bien Phu. L'odyssée de Janis
Un vieil homme est transporté à l'hôpital, une infirmière le prend en charge, il lui raconte sa vie ; une véritable épopée ! Janis Kalnis est né sujet du tsar en Courlande. Son enfance est marquée par la Grande Guerre qui se prolonge dans les Etats baltes après l'armistice de 1918. Lorsque la paix revient, une nouvelle menace se profile : l'URSS et son dictateur Staline. Pour le protéger, son père le fait embarquer sur un cargo. Janis va naviguer de port en port jusqu'au Havre où il s'engage dans la Légion étrangère ; une nouvelle vie commence : trente ans de guerre. Janis et ses frères d'armes Lucien, Rolf et Igor sont envoyés au Maroc, ils prennent part aux combats contre les tribus du Rif puis s'embarquent pour l'Indochine. En 1940, Janis rentre en France pour combattre les Allemands. Fait prisonnier, il s'évade et repart en Indochine où il se bat à nouveau contre les Japonais puis le Vietminh au sein de la Légion et des bataillons thaïs jusqu'à l'ultime bataille : Diên Biên Phu. L'Indochine sera sa terre d'adoption, Janis y rencontre son seul amour et y séjourne jusqu'à la chute de Saigon. Toute sa vie, il n'aura de cesse de retourner en Courlande retrouver ses parents, mais cet espoir ne se concrétisera jamais. Roman historique, d'aventure, d'amitiés et d'amour loin des schémas entendus, cette fresque est basée sur une histoire vraie, des faits, des témoignages, et étoffée par de longues recherches. Ce récit, mélange de points de vue, d'émotions, de ressentis, de valeurs d'engagement et de fidélité, rend hommage à tous ces "hommes sans nom" oubliés qui ont combattu pour la France jusqu'aux confins de l'empire. Leur histoire personnelle raconte la grande histoire ; elle bousculera sans doute, déplaira peut-être ; elle est sans concession.

His knowledge, tenacity and eloquence still resound in the corridors of the Institute which bears his name in Saint Petersburg and his spirit continues to inspire the hundreds of researchers pursuing his work. He had anticipated the disappearance of plant diversity, and, within the space of a few decades, he studied and travelled throughout the world and found the means of saving it. For political and idealogical reasons, Nikolai Vavilov was condemned to death and left to starve in the dungeon of a Soviet prison. Gradually, on both sides of the iron curtain, his memory began to fade. One hundred years after Vavilov's first expedition, the photographer Mario Del Curto retraced his footsteps. For four years he has been meeting those who, despite overwhelming obstacles, perpetuate Vavilov's seed prospec- tion, selection, and conservation work in order to save the planet's staple food crops. Depuis toujours, j'ai du mal à établir des contacts avec les gens "normaux" . Quand je suis dans le trou noir, la tronche à l'envers, avec l'envie d'engueuler le vent et les oiseaux, je me dis parfois que ce sont des modèles en série, des ersatz, des brumes floues, sans consistance. Alors que les bizarres, c'est plus noble. Eux, ce sont des modèles uniques qui sont nés sans mode d'emploi et en kit et qui ont dû se fabriquer seuls. Alors, bien sûr, ça donne des constructions très personnelles. Les idées ne sont pas au bon endroit, ou bien elles sont morcelées ou trop vastes, sans limites. Et parfois, il manque des pièces. C'est le problème des trucs en kit. Je suis devenu psychologue et je travaille dans ce Centre. Souvent mon boulanger me demande si ce n'est pas trop dur de travailler avec "les fous" . Moi j'ai envie de lui répondre que ce qui est vraiment dur, c'est plutôt ce genre de dialogue, mais je me tais. Et je ne peux pas répondre que parmi les Monuments, on peut parfois trouver des elfes.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.

Both the postmodern debate about the "death of the author" and cultural debates about constructing identities (national, socio-political, cultural, ethnic, sexual, etc.) have led to multiple attempts at redefining autobiography, traditionally predicated on concepts of identity and truth. Narratives of French Modernity
Inspired by the work of their colleague David Gascoigne, a group of scholars from the UK and France examine in this book the narrative strategies of some of the most interesting and important French writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Stretching chronologically from 1905 to 2005, the volume examines a wide variety of prose genres, from pornography to Bildungsroman to magic realism, as well as poetry. Michel Tournier figures in several of the contributions, emerging as something of a touchstone for many of the thematic preoccupations that are common throughout the period : values and authority, self and other, identity, spirituality, migration and exile, sexuality, the body, violence and war, and language. The authors also examine the flourishing of intertextuality, as well as the use of traditional forms, such as mythical structures and the ‘robinsonade', to undermine authoritative ‘métarécits'. Probing these themes and forms, and their metamorphoses across 100 years, the essays demonstrate a striking degree of continuity, linking writers as different as Apollinaire and Houellebecq or Valéry and Fleutiaux, and highlight the difficulty of dividing the period neatly into chronologically ordered categories labelled ‘modern' or ‘postmodern'.

Quelques essais de littérature
Par sa vigueur et sa combativité, Etiemble aura été le grand réveilleur de la littérature comparée. Le présent essai en est une nouvelle preuve. On y trouve des réflexions sur la tradition et l'innovation. Une critique de l'européocentrisme. Des groupes de textes qui nous parlent de la littérature du Japon, de la Chine, du monde malais, du monde arabe, de la Turquie, de la Hongrie, de la Russie, de l'Afrique, de l'Allemagne, du Portugal, de la Suisse Romande, de la Wallonie, et même de la France, ce qui est l'occasion d'une nouvelle offensive contre le franglais. Par une dérision proche du désespoir, Etiemble nous livre ses deux derniers textes dans ce qu'il appelle "le français de l'avenir", autrement dit l'anglais. Le dernier s'intitule "This is my best". Il est difficile de rassembler en un livre tant de science, tant de variété dans les connaissances, mais aussi tant d'indignations, d'imprécations, de saintes colères. Italy and Tito’s Yugoslavia in the Age of International Détente
World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. Based on a wide collection of primary sources and documentary materials, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Adriatic region, a conflicted European space that had been affected by territorial disputes and ethnic strife for decades during the 20th century.

Classical Judaism: Torah, Learning, Virtue
This three-part anthology presents Classical Judaism in accord with its native categories, Torah, learning, and virtue. These correspond to the categories that a religious system will define for itself : world view, way of life, and theory of the social order that maintains the view and realizes it in its shared existence. By presenting substantial samples of the writings of that Judaism, the three volumes afford direct access to the way in which, in its own words, that Judaism makes its statement. Readers are introduced through extensive selections to the character of Judaism through the kinds of writing that serve as its medium - Midrash, Mishnah, Talmud, stories about sages. The first part of the anthology speaks of the Torah, meaning, the written Torah and how it is read in Scripture. The second addresses the Mishnah, that is, the first document of the oral Torah, and further introduces the Talmuds and explains how these are to be read. Both of these volumes begin with essays on hermeneutics. The third volume sets forth the way in which the sage is represented as a medium through which the Torah of Sinai is set forth.

Logic: Mathematics, Language, Computer Science and Philosophy
In Logic Programming (25 and 26) the language of logic is used as a declarative programming language. Prolog uses resolution as its underlying proof mechanism. The logical structure of relational databases is explained (27) in set theoretical terms and it is shown how the language of set theory can be used as a Structured Query Language (SQL). Computability, Undecidability and Complexity are treated in sections 28, 29, and 30, respectively, in terms of Turing machines. The undecidability of the validity problem for predicate logic and the NP-completeness of the satisfiability problem for propositional logic are shown in a similiar way. Chomsky's notion of grammar and its relation to the notion of automation is presented in section 31. Both untyped and typed lambda calculus are treated in sections 32 and 33, respectively. The role epistemic logic can play in the description of distributed systems is explained (34). In section 35 and 36, temporal logic is used both for verification by hand and for automatic verification. A tableaux-based automated theorem prover for classical logic is elaborated in the Appendix. Each section ends with a number of exercises ; the answers can be found at the end of this book.

Chansons du figuier bleu / Songs of blue fig tree
Ce recueil rassemble quarante-sept chansons dont huit sont initialement écrites en kabyle. Elles sont toutes traduites du français en anglais. Quarante de ces chansons figurent dans la trilogie "Le murmure du figuier bleu". Elles évoquent tour à tour la nostalgie du pays natal, la solitude, la nature, l'amour, la tendresse, le jardin d'enfant, Venise, les voyages, la vieillesse, le temps perdu et bien d'autres thèmes encore. Ce sont des fenêtres, des lignes de fuite, des accès vers d'autres mondes quand celui dans lequel nous luttons ne nous apporte plus la bonne respiration. This collection gathers forty seven songs among which eight are initially written in Kabyle. They are all translated from French in English. Forty of these songs appear in the trilogy "The rustle of the blue fig tree". They evoke alternately the nostalgia for the native country, the solitude, the nature, love, tenderness, child's garden, Venice, journeys, old age, the lost time and many others themes still. They are windows, base lines, accesses towards other worlds when the one in which we fight does not bring us anymore the good breath.

Strange Adventures
Strange Adventures examines portrayals of womanhood in the works of prize-winning French author Pierrette Fleutiaux. Fleutiaux's refreshing pictures of womanhood offer insights into how women can become more whole, substantial and free in themselves and in their relationships, as well as how they can contribute to the external world through their creativity and leadership. The study demonstrates how Fleutiaux's heroines navigate the external, bodily and inner situations of adolescence, early adult life, marriage, motherhood, maturity, leadership and death, in the process developing greater inner resources of wisdom, compassion and resilience. This volume considers selections from Fleutiaux's oeuvre, from her first short fiction Histoire de la chauve-souris to her recent Loli le temps venu, including Métamorphoses de la reine (Goncourt de la nouvelle) and Nous sommes éternels (Prix Femina). Using a theoretical framework which draws on Jungian concepts and the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir, the study analyses women's individuation trajectories at each stage of life. Throughout, Fleutiaux's depictions are shown to pose a challenge to existing conceptions of womanhood and individuality, thus opening up new understandings of what it means to be a woman, and to be human.
