Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) est un acteur majeur de la peinture gestuelle abstraite. Né en Chine au sein d'une famille d'amateurs d'art, il est formé à l'Académie des beaux-arts mais subit la guerre sino-japonaise, des tragédies familiales, la disparition quasi totale de ses oeuvres de jeunesse puis l'exil - en 1949 vers Taïwan et en 1955 vers Paris, où il s'installe enfin. C'est dans ce cadre apaisé que son abstraction orageuse voit le jour. Excluant toute géométrie patente, celle-ci est constituée de nébuleuses et autres maelströms polychromes, modelés par de puissants effets de clair-obscur. Atmosphérique et hors échelle, chaque tableau est une matrice où notre vision se projette et s'abîme, nous faisant perdre tout repère spatial ou sémantique. Nourri de peinture tant classique que moderne, tant asiatique qu'occidentale, Chu formule la sensation mnésique du paysage, l'essence dynamique du geste et le surgissement de la lumière. Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) is a major figure in the history of gestural abstract painting. Born in China into a family of art lovers, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Then came the Second Sino-Japanese war, family tragedy, the loss of nearly all his early work, and finally, exile-to Taiwan in 1949, then, in 1955, to Paris, where he settled. This peaceful home witnessed the emergence of his tortured abstraction, devoid of obvious geometry, in which polychrome nebulae and maelstroms clash with violent chiaroscuro effects. Atmospheric, impossible to scale, each painting is an arena into which vision is projected and submerged amid a loss of spatial and semantic bearings. Steeped in painting both classical and modern, Asian and Western, Chu's art recreates the memory of a landscape, the dynamic essence of gesture, and the brilliance of light. This study, by placing his work in its context, using parallels, analogies, and other resonances, focuses on the singularity of his approach to abstraction, underpinned by the organic logic of the living world, by natural phenomena, forms, forces, and by their eruptive fluidity and cosmogonic revolutions. For many years, Chu remained a somewhat marginal figure, perhaps because of his reserved personality and his principled rejection of commercial strategies. Making the most of historical perspective, and in light of the artist's current recognition, this monograph sets out to define some of the aesthetic themes shaping his work and to help dispel some of the misunderstandings that have surrounded its reception.

Cuckoos and cowbirds are amongst the select bird groups renowned as professional parasites, who always lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Occasional parasitic laying is also widespread in many other birds, who gladly parasitise the nests of their own kind when the opportunity arises.
In this fascinating new book, Nick Davies describes the natural histories of all the brood parasites and examines the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, others are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How does this arms race proceed? Will defenceless hosts improve their armoury in time, or are there sometimes constraints on hosts which allow the parasites to gain the upper hand? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much commoner than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitise the nests of their own kind?
All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn. Here is a book with wide appeal, both to amateur naturalists fascinated by this most singular and macabre of behaviours and to ornithologists and ecologists interested in the evolution of ecology and behaviour. New, corrected edition of MacMillan's breakthrough work, a sensation at the 1990 BBC Proms. The work is now firmly established in the contemporary orchestral repertoire worldwide and championed by leading conductors. Isobel Gowdie, from Nairn, Scotland, was publically executed in 1662 amid scenes of hysterical fright and sadism, one of 4, 500 who perished during the Scottish Reformation because their contemporaries thought they were witches. The composer remarks, "Initially I was drawn by the dramatic and programmatic potential of this insane and terrible story but the work soon developed a far more emotional core as I attempted to draw together various strands in a single, complicated act of contrition. On behalf of the Scottish people the work craves absolution and offers Isobel Gowdie the mercy and humanity that was denied her in the last days of her life. To do this I have tried to capture the soul of Scotland in music, and the outer sections contain a multitude of chants, songs and litanies (real and imagined) coming together in a reflective outpouring - a prayer for the murdered woman. Dogs. Authentic and fictitious graphic inventory
Dogs is a kennel of 200 drawings made by Jochen Gerner between 2021 and 2023, following his study of birds. Each of these dogs was drawn with pigmented Indian ink felt pens on small-format lined and squared school notebooks from China and India. This series of drawings follows the graphic experiment of Jochen Gerner to explore all the potentialities of the grids, lines and colours in the representation of textures and hair. Focusing on dogs, which Jochen Gerner represents in a touching and very funny multiplicity, this collection reveals us that hardly nothing is required on paper for these dogs to breathe, each of them in an outstanding singularity. This book is based on detailed interviews with a group of Irish women who have experienced marital separation. It links the women's accounts with literature on the values and beliefs about marriage, women and family which were prevalent when they were growing up in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. The book chronicles their young adult years, the early stages of their marriages and the events and processes which led to their separations. It explores the women's emotional reactions at the time of separating, the types of support which they found beneficial and the personal, social and financial consequences of having separated. Although the book is written from a sociological perspective, the combination of theory and practical insights make it accessible to a wide variety of readers. It aims to generate discussion and deepen understanding of an area into which there has been minimal research in Ireland and which poses a range of important questions for future researchers, practitioners and policy-makers.

On the night of the 31st of December 1943, two British commandos successfully collected a few samples of sand and peat under the very nose of the Germans posted at Ver-sur-Mer. Five months later, some 25, 000 men followed in their footsteps and landed on the same shores, codenamed Gold Beach. Barely had they landed, the British troops set out to building an artificial harbour, undoubtedly one of the finest technical feats of the Second World War. It was to prove a major asset for securing Allied supremacy in the months that followed the D-Day Landings.

One Artist on Five Continents
Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.

Flavius Josephus, the Zealots and Yavne
The historiography concerning The War of the Jews by Flavius Josephus has underlined the various aspects (economic, social, political, religious) of the Roman-Jewish conflict from 66 to 73 AD. A study of the Jew's vision of himself and the Other, the Roman, makes it possible to see this conflict from the point of view of the conquered. Analysis of the events which, from 6 to 66 AD, resulted in the opening of hostilities, suggests that the Jewish-Roman conflict was also a conflict of mentalities. The Jewish mentality implies a concept of war which contributed to the development of the divisions and schisms between the supporters of full-scale war against Rome (the Zealots) and the non-belligerents (Rabbi Yohanan ben Zaccaï and the Yavne School, Flavius Josephus). Furthermore, the discourse of Flavius Josephus is Jewish discourse. So far as certain options are concerned, such as his rejection of the war against Rome on the one hand, and his hatred of the Zealots on the other, a literal reading of that discourse shows that they are in the direct line of Jewish tradition as represented by RYBZ and his Yavne School. Josephus can be taken literally ; the interest of his writing lies in its presentation of an internal cohesion and in the light that throws on the points of convergence and divergence in the same Pharisaic options. Finally, Josephus' text leads us to reconsider the problem of his 'betrayal'.

Why We Are Not What We Think We Are
Questions about personal identity and about time affect us all. The concern for "our" future and the fear of "our" death are based on (mostly vague) concepts of personal identity over time. Though the atomic components of our present body are not identical with the ones shown on our childhood photos, we have no doubts in recognizing ourselves on those pictures. Similarly, we are convinced that "we" will be able to recognize "ourselves" on our present passport-photos even in the future. Is this confidence justified ? If it is not, our conception of life and death would be as faulty as was the image of the universe in the Middle Ages.

Un fortin romain du désert Oriental d'Egypte au coeur de l'exploitation de la diorite verte. Les fouilles (ministère des Affaires étrangères/Ifao) menées à Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) en 2001-2003 viennent préciser nos connaissances sur l'occupation du désert Oriental d'Egypte à l'époque romaine. Ce site, implanté dans le massif du Porphyritès, possède un gisement de "granito verde fiorito di bigio " (diorite), dont la tentative d'exploitation a entraîné, sous Domitien, la construction par l'armée d'un petit fortin qui a servi de base de vie aux ouvriers des carrières. Quoique très mutilée, l'inscription de la porte indique une date de construction vers 88-92. Ce premier état ne semble pas pouvoir aller au-delà du début du règne de Trajan. Le praesidium fut sans doute abandonné par la suite, jusque vers 146. Il ne fut réoccupé alors que pour une brève période de temps, avant d'être de nouveau abandonné. L'examen des deux carrières apporte quantité d'enseignements quant à l'organisation des travaux d'exploitation mais les scénarios que nous pouvons établir sur leur histoire respective restent en grande partie spéculatifs. La mise en service de Kainè Latomia se solda finalement par un échec, dû probablement à une mauvaise qualité de la pierre. Toutefois quelques blocs furent envoyés à Rome où ils furent d'abord employés pour la décoration de la domus Flavia sur le Palatin. -- The excavations (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO) carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001-2003 have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (diorite), the attempted exploitation of which led to the construction of a fortlet by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. Although very mutilated, the gate inscription indicates a date of construction around 88-92. This early state does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan's reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied only for a short period of time, before being abandoned again. The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organisation of the exploitation works, but the scenarios that we can establish about their respective histories remain largely speculative. The commissioning of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were first used for the decoration of the Domus Flavia on the Palatine.

This collection of articles shows that some media products ought to carry a mental health warning : Some school books still contain simplistic presentations of England and Germany. English and German journalists admit that the entertainment value of their articles sometimes takes precedence over impartial reporting. English children's books may contain a reasonable mixture of good and bad Germans but some wartime films needed more sinister types for propaganda. "Made in Germany" originated in English legislation as a label against German competition but became a German marketing tool. A minister in Margaret Thatcher's cabinet made unprintable remarks about Germany. When they were printed, the Ridley Affair proved to be the beginning of the downfall of Britain's controversial Prime Minister.

She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.
