Cognitive Perspectives on Language
The papers collected in the present volume show that the terms cognitivism and cognitive, so common in present day linguistic discourse, do not refer to a single theoretical mode or approach to language. Firstly, the papers show that cognitivism is a lively research area accommodating a wide spectrum of approaches. Secondly, they address a number of issues ranging from grammaticalization, event structure, semantic representation, equivalence, image schematic representations and lexicography to poetry, metaphor, metonymy, and national mentality. Some of the contributions deal with the linguistic phenomena in one language, while others take up a cross-linguistic approach.

Manufactories in Germany
In eighteenth century Germany goods were produced in manufactories as well as by independent craftsmen and artisans employed by capitalists. The manufactories using tools and manually operated machines foreshadowed in many respects the factories of the nineteenth century. State and local support for the manufactories was aimed at reducing unemployment, maintaining military strength and securing foreign currency. Although not all manufactories were successful they provided a valuable heritage of industrial and commercial skills which were profitable to later entrepreneurs. However, those who - like Karl Marx - considered the manufactories to be a stage in the process of industrialisation have been proved wrong.

Dune, les origines Tome 3 : Les Navigateurs de Dune
Le dernier et inédit tome de la série " Dune, les Origines " publié directement en poche ! Un siècle environ après la Bataille de Corrin qui a signé la victoire finale des humains sur les machines pensantes, l'Imperium est encore en phase de reconstruction et l'équilibre des forces en présence déjà précaire, menace de basculer. L'Empereur Salvador Corrino, dirigeant falot et corrompu, vient d'être assassiné sur ordre de Josef Venport, magnat à la tête d'un empire commercial qui contrôle la majorité de la production d'épice sur Arrakis et détient le secret des Navigateurs, ces humains mutés dont le cerveau saturé d'épice garantit le transport en toute sécurité à travers les replis de l'espace. Roderick Corrino, frère du défunt, lui succède et se voit contraint de sévir contre le Directeur Venport qui était jusqu'alors son allié dans la lutte contre les Butlériens, luddites fanatiques obéissant à Manford Torondo, qui ont notamment détruit l'Ecole Mentat de Gilbertus Albans et porté un coup presque fatal à la Communauté des Soeurs, ancêtre du Bene Gesserit. Renversements d'alliances et coups de théâtre rythment ce troisième et dernier tome du sous-cycle Dune, les Origines et les fans se réjouiront de découvrir dans cette conclusion haletante l'origine de la Guilde Spatiale, ainsi qu'un nouvel épisode dans la vendetta millénaire qui oppose les Atréides aux Harkonnen.

La bataille de Corrin a mis fin au règne des Machines pensantes et le mouvement butlérien a entrepris de détruire toute forme de technologie dangereuse. L'humanité doit donc s'adapter et acquérir les capacités autrefois détenues par les Machines. L'ordre des Mentats est né de ce constat. Un entraînement spécial, formant à la logique la plus poussée dès l'enfance permet à certains hommes de devenir tel des ordinateurs humains. Mais l'extrémisme du chef du jihad butlérien va bientôt placer les Mentats dans une situation difficile.

The papers collected in this volume are selected from the proceedings of the Love and Sexuality conference held at the University of Leeds in 2002. They bring together a cross-section of new directions in the study of love and sexuality currently being explored in French Studies. The central focus of the collection is the representation of love, desire, erotica and sexuality in the couple, in particular in relation to depictions of women. The contributions share a common concern with problematising issues of love and sexuality across various disciplines, focusing on literary texts, cinema, gender studies, theatre studies, history, visual iconography and cultural studies, and ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day.

This book brings together twelve specially commissioned essays that showcase current research on Spanish Republican exile theatre and performance, including work by some of the foremost scholars in the field. Covering a range of periods, geographical locations and theatrical phenomena, the essays are united by the common question of what it means to ‘stage exile', exploring the relationship between space, identity and performance in order to excavate the place of theatre in Spanish Republican exile production. Each chapter takes a particular case study as a starting point in order to assess the place of a particular text, practitioner or performance within Hispanic theatre tradition and then goes on to examine the case study's relationship with the specific sociocultural context in which it was located and/or produced. The authors investigate wider issues concerning the recovery and performability of these documentary traces, addressing their position within the contemporary debate over historical and cultural memory, their relationship to the contemporary stage, the insights they offer into the experience and performance of exile, and their contribution to contemporary configurations of identity and community in the Hispanic world. Through this commitment to interdisciplinary debate, the volume offers a new and invigorating reimagination of twentieth-century Hispanic theatre from the margins.

Les mémoires d'un Thug
Ameer Ali raconte comment il fut adopté à 5 ans par Ismail, le Thug, adorateur de la déesse Kali, qui l'initie rapidement aux lois de sa secte de ban-dits des grands chemins. Ils mènent une vie princière et libre, de ville en ville, choisissant leurs victimes parmi les notables et riches marchands. Leurs périples n'empêchent pas les aventures amoureuses et le mariage d'Ali avec la belle et innocente Azima dont il aura deux enfants. Cependant les échecs et les trahisons se succèdent et Ameer Ali est contraint de rejoindre la terrible année de Cheeto. De nouveau avec les Thugs, il rencontre un vieil homme qui a adopté il y a longtemps une enfant dont le père, la mère et le frère ont dis-paru. Pour son talisman, Ameer Ali assassine la jeune femme adoptée. De retour au foyer, il est arrêté puis libéré par le rajah, nouvel allié des Anglais, mais son père est condamné à mort. Il perd tous ses biens et sa femme. A nouveau arrêté, condamné à la prison à perpétuité, il découvre qu'il n'est pas le fils adoptif d'Ismaël et que la jeune femme qu'il a tué était sa soeur. Trahi par les siens, il de-vient auprès des Anglais le principal acteur de l'extinction des Thugs.

A New Family
The 'success' of a conversion depends on the group into which the convert is introduced. This study in early Christian ecclesiology from the perspective of house and family is guided by this sociological theory. Converts often met with problems in relation to their family. They joined a fellowship which conceived of itself as a family of brothers and sisters. It is the aim of this investigation to present the potential of the Christian fellowship to take the role of a new family in relation to its converts. This is done by means of historical material and cross-cultural comparisons. The relevance of the material for present-day churches and mission is considered.

Everyday Men
This study is about everyday men. They are approached through a unique marriage of biblical theology and empirical research which gives birth to a missionary challenge. Part One attempts to build a theological foundation for looking at people from the aspect of belief and unbelief. It sees this distinction as a crucial theme in the biblical material which remains relevant to men everywhere. The author discovers five elements of Christian belief in the biblical material while unbelief spans the five elements by its void, denial, or choice of an alternative. Part Two starts with a random sample, in-depth interview of fifty men in a "working-class" area of Birmingham, England. The interviews attempt to discover the nature and saliency of the men's belief and unbelief in the Christian faith. The analysis stresses the qualitative response with the emphasis on listening to the men describe their lives, values, beliefs, and lack of beliefs in their own words. The findings are also compared to other related studies, prompting some conclusions regarding the meaning of these findings. The author attempts to bring the biblical material to bear on the findings about ordinary people and asks whether they can be described as believers or unbelievers. From this starting point, it becomes obvious that the scope of unbelief is very broad. Part Three takes the understanding of God's Word and men's words and moves toward a missiological goal of approaching unbelievers with a gospel for today. It sees both the content and context of the gospel as important. The cultural problem is briefly considered and specific approaches are suggested in relation to the climate of unbelief in "working-class" English culture.

A Culture of Tough Jews is a spirited call for postmodern cultural vitality that responds to contemporary politics of identity and memory.

Rock and Ritual
This book is the outcome of the analysis and discussion of the links between ritual practices and some natural spaces, particularly caves, but also rockshelters and stones. The articles gathered in this volume show very diverse contexts and researches, mainly from Bronze Age to Roman times. They offer new perspectives about religious landscapes as well as the role of these spaces in territorial organisation. Several contributions try to reconstruct ritual movements, regulated religious itineraries and social practices, whereas others focus on the circulation inside caves and rockshelters, considering the multi-sensoriality of these natural spaces, linked also with the material offerings. Rock & Ritual volume is another evidence of the complexity and variability of ritual practices linked to natural spaces.

Thackeray and the Problem of Realism
Although it is traditional to see a certain kind of "realism" as the essence of fiction, in practice novels of course offer not a simple reproduction of experience but a throughgoing organization of it. The novel is, after all, a bourgeois genre and it reflects that bourgeois view of life according to which the world is there merely to be dominated and controlled by man. This study examines both Thackeray's early fiction, in which both the novel form and the manipulative society to which it belongs are attacked, and his later works, in which they are defended, and tries to determine the reasons for this change.

Auprès de ses grands-parents, elle vit comme ses amis, surfeurs également, au rythme des saisons et des vagues. Parce qu'au milieu de l'océan, Dune a toujours ressenti le désir de repousser plus loin ses limites, elle s'est lancé pour défi de participer au Christmas Challenge, une compétition de grosses vagues qui a lieu tous les hivers et exige une préparation intensive. Or, au même moment, Dune fait la rencontre de Joaquim, un jeune homme très captivant. Elle est alors entraînée par un courant contre lequel il lui sera difficile de lutter.

Thomas Carlyle 1981
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), essayist, biographer, historian, philosopher, translator, literary and social critic, was one of the great intellectual forces of his period, indispensable to our understanding of Victorian Britain and the 19th century in general. Scholars from Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and the United States assembled at the Scottish Studies Centre of the University of Mainz in Germersheim for the International Thomas Carlyle Centenary Symposium 1981. Their papers, published in this volume, open up a new - European - dimension of Carlyle's personality, work and thought. They offer evidence that the subject is not exhausted, quite the reverse, and that in many aspects Carlyle is as topical today as in his own time.

«America's my Home»- Interviews with Young Blacks from Georgia
This book presents six interviews with young, upwardly mobile blacks from the state of Georgia, USA, as a contribution to American oral history and culture. The time span covered comprises the years 1960 to 1975, a period which marked a transitional phase in race relations. The interviewees state their experiences with and feelings on desegregation, their political and ethnic loyalties, their aspirations in life, and their value systems. Despite a varied socio-economic background, they show a heightened sense of racial and cultural identity and an integrationist orientation with Martin Luther King as a culture hero.

The contributions to this volume by H.W. Dechert, A.K. Fathman, F. Grosjean, D.C. O'Connell, M. Raupach, K. Sajavaara/J. Lehtonen, H.W. Seliger and R. Wiese all deal with speech data from native speakers of different languages, or native speakers and language learners of the same language, or speakers in their native and their second languages. They are the results of various methodological attempts to assess speech using a cross-linguistic approach and represent an area of research which may be called "Contrastive Psycholinguistics".

Afanda bilounga tome iv le destin trace dun petit seigneur de la foret. nostalgie dune enfance heure
L'auteur qui a beaucoup voyagé à travers la planète, tient ce goût des voyages de son grand-père maternel qui était un fonctionnaire de l'état camerounais ; en sa qualité donc de serviteur de l'état, il fut emmené à se déplacer constamment, suite à ses multiples affectations. Les enfants sont de véritables éponges ; c'est à l'âge de 10 - 12 ans, qu'ils s'imprègnent des lieux où ils sont emmenés à vivre. Dans ce tome IV de cette extraordinaire saga qui continue, cette fois-ci, après Garoua dans le nord-Cameroun, Adzadzoumou en pays Mvele, dans la région du centre du Cameroun, l'auteur Raphaël Elono, nous entraine dans un autre voyage inédit et très intéressant, dans la région de l'est-Cameroun, encore appelée : "La région du soleil levant", avec en prime, cette excellente ode au soleil. Cela vaut vraiment le détour, car, visiter l'est-Cameroun, c'est de la matière, des émotions, des sensations fortes, des couleurs vives, et surtout cette brillance constante d'un soleil quasi omniprésent.
