This book brings together twelve specially commissioned essays that showcase current research on Spanish Republican exile theatre and performance, including work by some of the foremost scholars in the field. Covering a range of periods, geographical locations and theatrical phenomena, the essays are united by the common question of what it means to ‘stage exile', exploring the relationship between space, identity and performance in order to excavate the place of theatre in Spanish Republican exile production. Each chapter takes a particular case study as a starting point in order to assess the place of a particular text, practitioner or performance within Hispanic theatre tradition and then goes on to examine the case study's relationship with the specific sociocultural context in which it was located and/or produced. The authors investigate wider issues concerning the recovery and performability of these documentary traces, addressing their position within the contemporary debate over historical and cultural memory, their relationship to the contemporary stage, the insights they offer into the experience and performance of exile, and their contribution to contemporary configurations of identity and community in the Hispanic world. Through this commitment to interdisciplinary debate, the volume offers a new and invigorating reimagination of twentieth-century Hispanic theatre from the margins.

She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.

There has been a heated international debate over Salman Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses ever since its publication in 1988. The present work examines the ways in which this affair has developed. From the beginning, one can find strong rhetorical emphases ; these are shown to argue for maintenance of meaningful boundaries. The thesis of Kuortti's book is that on each side of the debate, people use similar language to argue for the sanctity of their convictions. This is evident especially in the opposition between the arguments for the sacrality of Islam and literature. In the international exchange, how could we then find more respectful ways of acknowledging that we are not that dissimilar from each other ?

In Each Child Is My Only One : Lotte Carlebach-Preuss, the Portrait of a Mother and Rabbi's Wife, Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, the daughter of Rabbi Dr. Joseph Zvi Carlebach (1883–1942), last Chief Rabbi of Hamburg and its surroundings, describes her childhood in the lively household of a rabbi's family with nine children, focusing on the special personality of her mother, Lotte Carlebach, née Preuss (1900–1942). The book starts with the history of the Preuss family, goes on to describe the marriage of Lotte to Joseph Carlebach, and portrays in detail their dynamic family life – until their deportation with their four youngest children to a Latvian concentration camp in 1942. The book is composed of two main parts. In the first section the reader learns about the events up to 1938, both inside and outside the Carlebach home ; the second section covers the years 1938–1941, in which there was a lively correspondence mainly between the mother and those of her children who succeeded in emigrating from Nazi Germany. This part concludes with several testimonies portraying the special personalities of Rabbi Carlebach and his wife and their devotion to the unfortunate who benefited from their unbounded assistance and altruism during the Holocaust. Many photographs are included in the book, several of them taken by Lotte Carlebach herself. The book is a unique and personal testimony about Jewish life in Germany during the years of persecution that relentlessly led to the conflagration of the Holocaust.

" L'humanité, chose curieuse s'est toujours retrouvée autour d'une tasse de thé " écrivait à l'aube du XXe siècle le distingué Okakura Kakuzo. Au vu de son extraordinaire ancienneté, il est étonnant de constater que le thé n'est arrivé que très récemment en Europe. Elle le découvrit seulement au XVIIe siècle, lorsque les commerçants hollandais l'importèrent depuis les ports chinois du Fujian. Et ce n'est qu'au XIXe siècle - lorsque le botaniste écossais Robert Fortune (1812-1880) déroba quelques milliers de pieds de théiers et le secret de fabrica-tion, alors jalousement gardé par la Chine interdite - que s'acheva le monopole chinois. Fasciné par l'ubiquité acquise depuis par la boisson la plus consommée au monde, le couple voyageur a entrepris de sillonner les ancestrales routes du thé, de la Chine jusqu'au Kenya en passant par le Japon, la Mongolie, l'Inde, le Tibet, le Népal, Ceylan, l'Ouzbekistan, l'Iran, la Turquie ou le Sahara.

Depuis 1840, plus de 700 000 timbres ont été émis par plus de 1000 pays, territoires ou administrations postales. Mais quels sont tous ces pays ? Où se situent-ils ? Parmi eux, lesquels existent encore et lesquels ont "disparu" ? Depuis quand ou pendant combien de temps ont-ils émis des timbres ? Quelles légendes, surcharges ou monnaies permettent d'identifier leurs timbres ? Quels autres pays ont utilisé leurs timbres, par exemple en les surchargeant ? Que sont devenus les pays "disparus" ?
