Nocturnal sleep apparently promotes the translation of labile short-term memories into more stable long-term memories. The present studies suggest that the sleep-related consolidation of hippocampus-mediated memories benefits primarily from early nocturnal sleep. A reduced activation of hippocampal glucocorticoid receptors and a neocortico-hippocampal 'off-line' mode during this part of sleep may be of particular relevance for this phenomenon. In contrast, non hippocampus-mediated memories benefit primarily from late nocturnal sleep. In addition to a critical amount of REM sleep, other, yet unknown factors may contribute to the consolidation of non hippocampus-mediated memories during late nocturnal sleep.

Despite the considerable amount of scholarship on Mann's work, his tetralogy – composed prior to and during his exile from Nazi Germany – has received less attention and has not been examined from the perspective of the relationship of visuality to narrative. In this study of Mann's reworking of the biblical account of Jacob, father of Joseph, the author examines the ways the novel's protagonists frame their environment through knowledge and meaning gained via specific acts of seeing. While considering Mann's oft-stated intent to refunctionalize myth by means of psychology for humane and progressive purposes, the book explores the lavish narrative attention Mann gives to visual detail, visual stimulation, the protagonists' eyes, ways of seeing, and even to staging and performance in anticipation of another's way of seeing. The results reveal that the plot of the first Joseph novel is carried and propelled by a series of visual encounters during which the narrative draws attention to the protagonists' eyes and acts of looking.

This study concentrates on metafictional novels by Angus Wilson, Lawrence Durrell and Doris Lessing. The various methods and degrees of the built-in novelists' attempts to transform autobiographical experience into fiction are surveyed and followed by a discussion of the validity of mimetic presuppositions about fiction. The alternatives to realism are then discussed against the background of recent narratological theories.

This scholarly publication presents the work of the designer, painter and illustrator Claude Gillot (1673-1722). The first volume on the artist in English, it accompanies a major exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum that explores Gillot's inventive and highly original draftsmanship and places his work in the context of artistic and intellectual activity in Paris ca. 1700. The history of eighteenth-century French art under the ancien régime is dominated by great names. But the artistic scene in Paris at the dawn of the century was diverse and included artists who forged careers largely outside of the Royal Academy. Among them was Claude Gillot. Known primarily as a draftsman, Gillot specialized in witty scenes taken from the Italian commedia dell'arte plays performed at fairground theaters and vignettes of satyrs enacting rituals that expose human folly. The book will address Gillot's work as a designer, painter, and book illustrator, and advance a chronology for his career. Crafting a timeline for Gillot's life and work will clarify his relationship with his younger collaborators Antoine Watteau and Nicolas Lancret. Through an artistic biography and six chapters, each devoted to an aspect of his oeuvre, Gillot's role in developing quintessential rococo subjects is established. We follow Gillot from his start as the son of a decorative painter in the bishopric of Langres to his arrival in Paris in the 1690s, as the city and its secular entertainments flourished apart from the royal court at Versailles. Myriad opportunities awaited artists outside official channels, and Gillot built his career working in the theater and as a painter and designer long before seeking official academic status. His involvement with writers, playwrights, and printmakers helped define his sphere. Gillot's preference for theatrical subjects brought him critical attention, and also attracted talented assistants such as Watteau and Lancret. Gillot came to prominence around 1712 working at the Paris Opéra and as a printmaker and illustrator of books, lending his droll humor to satires. By 1720, Gillot was enlisted to design costumes for the last royal ballet, one of the final projects of his career. He died nine months after his most celebrated pupil, Watteau. The sale of his estate, which including his designs and many etched copper plates, provided material for printmakers and publishers and ensured Gillot's lasting fame among print connoisseurs. His oeuvre as a draftsman and painter, however, was largely forgotten until drawings and canvases began to emerge in the first half of the twentieth century.

Built by Thutmosis III during his autonomous reign after the death of Queen Hatshepsut, these chambers form a complex with restricted access that underwent several architectural transformations. Among the most remarkable are the modification of its western entrance during Thutmosis III's own reign and the decoration of one of the chambers by Ptolemy XI Soter II, nearly fourteen centuries after its construction. This complex maintains close connections with other structures from the reign of Thutmosis III, including the Akh-menu, the new cultic center of the Temple of Amun-Re, as well as the access areas and the central part of the Karnak Temple. This volume presents, for the first time, all of the epigraphic material, largely unpublished, from this sector (including facsimiles, hieroglyphic texts, and translations), along with complete photographic coverage, undertaken after the completion of a major restoration and conservation programme in 2016.

Le centenaire de l'Organisation internationale du Travail, célébré durant l'année 2019, a rappelé que les normes internationales du travail constituent des outils de premier plan pour le développement des politiques nationales en matière sociale. He undertook to retell the biblical story of Joseph in order to explore the meaning of this attraction. In the phallic theology of the Old Testament - Israel's covenant with Yahweh was a sacred marriage, outwardly marked by circumcision, for the purpose of mutual sanctification and aggrandizement - Mann discovered the framework of a metaphysics of homoerotic desire. This book explores the many implications Mann found in his biblical source, including the paradoxical notion that a certain degree of suppression of the original desire is required if it is to continue to play its all-important role as a motivating force.

The Christian theology of religions at present faces a crisis. What precisely is the task of the theology of religions ? Does it merely consist in interpreting the non-Christian religions as steps, phases or contributions in the light of Christianity ? Has one from the theological side conceded the maximum to the non-Christian religions by acknowledging them as anonymous Christianity (Karl Rahner)? This study is an exploration on how one shall liberate the religion of the other from anonymity : how one shall leave the other with his/her own name. The model of thought employed in this study is gained through an analysis of the intercultural process of understanding, explained with instances from Africa and South America.

It inevitably involves the constitution of a pan-African State. For men, there is no unity without memory of the past. In fact, the construction of a federal state inevitably involves the restoration of African historical consciousness. There is no national and federal identity without a common language. The unification of Africa will only be possible if it takes the measure of its linguistic unification issue. To a lesser extent but like Cheikh Anta Diop in his book titled the Cultural Unity, I was animated throughout this heuristic by the idea that only the true knowledge of the past can maintain the consciousness and the feeling of a historical continuity essential to the consolidation of a nation for the purpose of building a multinational state in line with its past. Like Cheikh Anta Diop, I build my sureness on the legitimate idea that a people who lost a significant part of their historical memory must engage in the investigation of their past in every possible way. This investigation can take the contours of a reconnection with its past through so-called old languages. But a people can not live only with by merely repeating of what others tell them about themselves. The investigation through its linguistic past allows especially a direct knowledge of oneself. In addition to the fact that this knowledge simply highlights its weaknesses, it allows also to become aware by an introspective and therefore reflective of its real abilities and strengths. It structures being and the consciousness of being to resist any form of servile and degrading ideology. This quest for the past, not founded on blind passion but objectivity, nourishes a healthy ambition for a real universalism. To know one's past is already to project one's future. To know one's past is to give oneself the capacity to be able to bring to others in a perspective of giving and receiving. To know one's past is to refuse intellectual guardianship and wait-and-seeism. To know one's past is to be reborn.

Whether embodied in recurring poetic motives or staged in descriptive pauses, these text-isles, or recognisable textual islands, contribute to the spiralling aesthetic of the Breton lays with issues of their own, involving narrative and character development, processes of social signposting and potential theatricality. With the New Historicism notion of negotiable, volatile authority/auctoriality, this is an attempt at probing into the political and dramatic consequences of the letter-writing activity and its implications on the ever slippery notion of truth. Such "writs" are turned into instruments of manipulation, and deceit, which defy reason, and call for what one could call blind faith, from both the characters on stage and the off-stage audience. En s'intéressant à un aspect souvent négligé par la critique, cet article propose une analyse détaillée de la trajectoire des messages écrits dans Measure for Measure. Guyonne Leduc : The dramatic import of letters within letters in Frances Burney's Evelina (1778) That no attention has been paid to the rather numerous letters within letters in this epistolary novel might seem surprising for any critic studying Evelina. Yet a careful reading of those letters within letters, that seem to pass unnoticed in a novel where sight is the most important of the five senses and where the (mis) interpretation of signs is central, proves rewarding if only from a dramatic viewpoint. Indeed, some of those (enclosed, copied, mentioned, commented upon, etc.) letters within the letters collected by the "editor" trigger not just one of the two plots (the quest for Evelina's name and, at least, social identity) but also changes in geographical places, new turns in the two plots (the second one being the love plot), a comic episode, etc. If some of them thwart the reader's expectations, all of them make it possible to approach one of the key issues broached in the novel. Les lettres dans les lettres, pourtant assez nombreuses dans ce roman épistolaire, n'ont pas retenu l'attention, ce qui peut paraître étonnant pour quiconque étudie Evelina. Pourtant, une lecture minutieuse de ces lettres dans les lettres, qui semblent passer inaperçues dans un roman où la vue est le plus important des cinq sens et où l'interprétation (erronée) des signes est centrale, s'avère fructueuse, ne serait-ce que du point de vue dramatique. En effet, quelques-unes de ces lettres (incluses, recopiées, mentionnées, commentées, etc.) dans les lettres collationnées par l' "éditeur" déclenchent, non seulement l'un des deux intrigues (la quête du nom et de l'identité, au moins sociale, d'Evelina), mais aussi des changements géographiques, des tournants dans les deux intrigues (la seconde étant l'intrigue amoureuse), un épisode comique, etc. Si certaines déçoivent les attentes du lecteur, toutes permettent d'aborder l'une des questions-clés traitées dans le roman. Jean-François BAILLON : Tableaux vivants, still lives : tracing Terence Davies in The House of Mirth (2000) This article attempts to trace the presence of Terence Davies as author of The House of Mirth through three distinct but concurrent strategies. First, the recurrent use of symmetrical patterns at every level appears to link the film to Davies's previous output and signals the presence of a mega-narrator. Secondly, the structuring reference to classical Hollywood melodrama can be referred both to Davies's previous films and to his own personal taste. It is also a way for him to claim his attitude to the source material as fundamentally cinematic. Lastly, self-referential scenes at key moments in the narrative foreground the nature of the film as artefact. 's entire oeuvre is premised upon the experience of the war. In this article, I attempt to show that such a seminal condition for her writing led H. D. to pitch the tone of her war-related poetic sequences-Helen in Egypt and Trilogy-in the middle ground between the epic and the lyric. In spite of the chronological order of composition of these two books, the first written some ten years after the second, I contend that H. D. 's re-writing of the Helen story, transposing it from the epic to the lyric, can be understood as the crucible in which the materials for Trilogy are melted. For indeed, H. D. can deal with the traumatic event of the war, which so deeply affected her imagination, only by going against the current of time, according to a logic of the aftershock (Nachträglichkeit) which is structurally implicit in the way she intertwines Greek myth with twentieth-century history. The poetic persona which H. D. creates as a speaker in Trilogy, both transpersonal and intimate, may thus be seen as an attempt on her part to mediate and articulate trauma. The American park movement has been extensively studied and historicized since the beginning of the 1970s, but its origins have been little documented or analyzed. It is understood as resulting from the combined action of three factors : urbanization and industrialization, development of tourism and leisure, evolving perceptions of nature. This paper examines the limits of such interpretations on the period immediately preceding the foundation of the first parks and studies the contribution of rural cemeteries to the park movement. Andrew DIAMOND : Cutting through the "Fog of War" : World War II and the fracturing of the New Deal order in the urban North While the New Deal created a new relationship between ordinary citizens and the federal government with its work relief programs, welfare system, and laws protecting organized labor, this relationship began to sour in a northern wartime context marked by massive black migration, widespread racial conflict, and increasingly militant civil rights organizations. Pressured by black mobilization and the outbreak of violent civil disorders in major war production centers between 1941 and 1943, federal, state, and city authorities moved to create a range of race relations organizations devoted to fighting racial discrimination and fostering interracial cooperation. These organizations, some which were of a quasi-official nature, quickly became fixtures on the local political scene, playing active roles in countering the campaigns of whites to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and to retain the privileges of whiteness at work. What follows constitutes an attempt to understand how white residents and workers perceived and responded to these new race relations organizations. I will argue that in the eyes of average white residents and workers whose interests seemed to run up against them, the proliferation of these organizations worked to recast the role of the state from protector of the working man to protector of black rights, thereby fracturing the young New Deal order. Questions about personal identity and about time affect us all. The concern for "our" future and the fear of "our" death are based on (mostly vague) concepts of personal identity over time. Though the atomic components of our present body are not identical with the ones shown on our childhood photos, we have no doubts in recognizing ourselves on those pictures. Similarly, we are convinced that "we" will be able to recognize "ourselves" on our present passport-photos even in the future. Is this confidence justified ? If it is not, our conception of life and death would be as faulty as was the image of the universe in the Middle Ages.

English and Korean have various ways of expressing grammatical prominence. While focusing in English has been studied over the past twenty years by a number of generative and functional grammarians, there is as yet no comprehensive treatment of focus phenomena in Korean. This monograph treats five focusing constructions of English and looks at their grammatical and lexical equivalents in Korean. English and Korean are different typologically. Since this difference is important, if one wishes to make sense of the diverging focusing strategies in these two languages, it is necessary to give a typological outline of English and Korean. The follwing two typological approaches figure prominently in this monograph : the basic word order typology developed by Greenberg, and the language typology proposed by Li and Thompson.
