Origin of the Term «Shyster»: Supplementary Information

The present monograph complements Cohen's 1982 study of shyster. The main contributions of his new work are a who's who for the shyster story and a revisionist look at the coiner of the term (Mike Walsh). Scholars are currently agreed that Walsh was a raving, ranting demagogue and a wild-eyed genius whose only contribution was the introduction of gangs into New York City's political process. Cohen argues, however, that Walsh possessed far more humanity (and possibly influence) than his critics have given him credit for. It is noteworthy too that the studies of Walsh and shyster shed light on each other ; neither is complete alone.

The Winter of Democracy. Partitocracy in Belgium

In itself, partitocracy can be simply defined as a political regime where power is - in an excessive degree - in the hands of political parties. In Belgium, partitocracy has perhaps reached its highest level of elaboration, with complex interactions between citizens, candidates and elected representatives, parties as well as parliaments and governments. The Winter of Democracy : Partitocracy in Belgium aligns a dozen of scientific contributions that tackle the mutltifaceted concept of partitocracy from multiple perspectives. The book also celebrates the academic career of Lieven De Winter, almost five decades of a rich research commitment that spanned both at Université catholique de Louvain and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, as well as across numerous institutions, projects and networks all around Europe. Lieven De Winter has significantly contributed to the study of all dimensions that constitute the core object of this book : Partitocracy in Belgium.

The Moral Ideals of Care and Respect

Philosophers are in the process of constructing an environmental ethics theory intended to govern human conduct toward nature. Relying on moral philosophy or ecological theory to generate normative principles, philosophers have failed to pay adequate attention to human psychology. To address the question of responsible relations with nature via insights and methods from moral psychology means to validate environmental ethics theory with real-life human functioning. It also means broadening the psychological study of morality to include nature. An interpretive analysis of the study participants' moral deliberations and experiences revealed the moral ideals of "care" and "respect." These contrast with the moral ideal of "justice" which dominates environmental ethics discourse.

Listening to What You See. Selected Contributions on Dutch Art, Edition

Hecht's attitude has supplemented and corrected the iconological approach to Dutch seventeenth-century painting, and some of his best-known critical papers are included here. So are a few contributions on the changing taste for specific kinds of Dutch painting and an iconographical study that brought to light the subject of one of Rembrandt's most ambitious early works, which had remained unrecognized ever since it was discovered in1924. Its composition had always been misread, and it was again a matter of listening to what you see before its subject could be identified. Apart from a few scholarly reviews, Listening to what you see also contains a sample of Hecht's writings for the public at large. Defending public art collections, showing what art can mean in times of crisis when it is not accessible, as was the case when Covid forced the museums to shut down, and talking about what art may do for us - provided that we listen. The volume ends with a personal musing on a picture by P. C. Wonder and a tribute to Charles Donker, the outstanding print maker

Salvatore COSTANZA, "Les oreilles ont dû vous tinter" : the literary fortune of a folkloric theme, from Lucien to Proust, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, julysept. 2015, p. 257-268. We examine the survival of a folklore theme centered around the observation of buzzing in one's ears. Ringing was considered as a fateful movement and was comprised among the observations for divinatory ends. The relationship between the buzzing in one's ears and the belief that one subsequently became the object of other people's speech appears in Lucian of Samosata (second century A. D.) and in his later revival given by sixth century's epistolographer Aristaenetus. In this respect, a striking parallel is provided in modern French literature by Proust's Recherche. In every case a woman acting as mediator "reveals" someone that his beloved is always true to him and she was endless speaking of him. Consequently, something should have buzzed in his ears. It is interesting to remark, that such an argument drawn from superstition about buzzing in one's ears, that is, otomancy, still recurs in M. Proust with respect to abused lover's troubles. It is clearly the same plot, as his Greek antecedents have already used. Caroline BELOT GONDAUD, The Figure of the Machiavellian Couple, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, july-sept. 2015, p. 269-280. The figure of the machiavellian couple appears in Macbeth and Les Liaisons dangereuses, Les Diaboliques, The Portrait of A Lady as well as in various detective novels. The way it is told and staged creates a dramaturgy of evil. The Machiavellian couple can be interpreted as a mere figure of love and evil which rewrites, in its Shakespearean version, the biblical narrative of the Fall while the couple of Laclos signals the deep deterioration of the ideal of love in a courtly meaning. Mario ZANUCCHI, The crisis of Symbolism. The reception of Baudelaire and Verlaine in the poetry of Walter Wenghöfer, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, julysept. 2015, p. 281-298. The aim of this article is to study the reception of Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine in the work of a poet from Stefan George's circle, who has been ignored by the German literary historiography until now : Walter Wenghöfer. The reception study is supported and clarified by the intertextual and intermedial analysis of exemplary poems. In this way, the contribution reconstructs the crisis of symbolist poetics in the German poetry of the < fin du siècle >. Furthermore it shows how through the aesthetic depotentialization of symbolist authorities Wenghofer anticipates expressionist criticism of the symbolist poetics. Christine QUEFFELLEC, "Life rarely imitates Art" : Gemma Bovery between Flaubert and Wilde, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, july-sept. 2015, p. 299-308. Gemma Bovery, Posy Simonds's graphic novel, is a parody of Flaubert's Madame Bovary, transposed into the end of the 20th century. The narrator, seduced by Emma Bovary, whose romantic aspirations he shares, imagines that his neighbours, Charlie and Gemma Bovery, will experience the same fate as Flaubert's characters and that life will imitate art, in accordance with Oscar Wilde's hopes. He will realize that he was wrong. This novel induces us to reflect on reading and the relationship between literature and life. The film adaptation by Anne Fontaine distorts somewhat the book's meaning, giving a unity of style and tone that the English writer had wanted to break down in order to draw closer to Flaubert's novel.

Tina shot me between the eyes and other stories

"Tidjani Alou's writing sketches the commonplace and the metaphysical, with heft, honesty, and audacity. The range is compelling, as she takes us through lives in places as diverse as Accra and Niamey. The prose is deft, her metaphors sting with accuracy. This is a writer to think and feel with". - Emmanuel Iduma, editor, Saraba Magazine. In fifteen formidable lyrical prose, Tina Shot Me Between the Eyes explores how the self is shaped and transformed by the knots we yearn to tie around ourselves : familial, spousal, parental, and societal. It tackles how we struggle in relationships for nourishment and fulfilment, and how connections could kill us and how we could kill to survive - a potent force for understanding humanity and the nuances of acts of violence, tolerance, faith and love.

Grenzpfähle der Wirklichkeit- Approaches to the Poetry of R.S. Thomas

R.S. Thomas is one of the most important contemporary poets in Great Britain. The author of this study uses a twofold approach in order to sketch a portrait of his work. On the one hand, R.S. Thomas's historical and literary Welsh background with its particular problems of language and identity is delineated. On the other hand, groups of poems which focus on specific themes are analyzed extensively, so that the principles of the poet's thoughts and the development of his work from the 40s up to the present become transparent.

Walter of Châtillon's Alexandreis Book 10 - A Commentary

The final and most important book of Walter of Châtillon's Alexandreis is examined as a paradigm for both the compositional techniques and the meaning of the whole poem. These techniques are shown as being reliant on the medieval arts of composition, the strategies inherited from the Biblical paraphrasts and the strict discipline of classical epic hexameter. The author shows that Walter of Châtillon is not simply a classicising epigone of Vergil, but a master poet refining contemporary epic techniques and incorporating scientific and philosophic materials into an elegant moral diatribe against arrogance.

Exceptions and Rules:- Brecht, Planchon and The Good Person of Szechwan

This book examines the Brechtian influence on Roger Planchon's three stagings of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan (July 1954 ; October 1954 ; December 1958). The meaning of a Brechtian mise en scène is determined by an analysis of the Berliner Ensemble production of the same play (1957). A comparison of these stagings not only reveals the clash between the German and French theatrical traditions but the German mise en scène also provides a point of reference which underlines the similarities and differences between Planchon's and Brecht's staging methods.

Pass or Fail?. Assessing the Quality of Democracy in South Africa

In recent years, growing concerns over the strength of South Africa's democracy appear to indicate a population increasingly disillusioned and dissatisfied with the quality of its implementation. This book assesses the quality of democracy in South Africa after 20 years of democracy in order to ascertain whether or not this growing perception is valid. Since the inception of democracy in 1994 there have been countless procedural and substantive improvements in addressing historically entrenched political, social and economic problems ; however, there are serious issues that have emerged relating to the quality of democratic implementation in South Africa. Two existing analytical frameworks of democracy assessment, International IDEA's State of Democracy framework and Leonardo Morlino's tool for empirical research on democratic qualities, TODEM, are utilised to assess the quality of South Africa's rule of law and institutional capacity ; representative and accountable government ; civil society and popular participation ; and freedom and equality after 20 years of democracy. The book concludes cautiously that while South Africa faces many serious and threatening potholes in the road to a fully successful democracy, there is nevertheless much to applaud.

Borders and Ecotones in the Indian Ocean. Cultural and Literary Perspectives, Textes en français et anglais

This collection of critical essays anchors itself in the Indian Ocean and explores the multiple ways dynamic exchanges have shaped this multilingual region of the world, from India to the Mascarene Islands to Southern Africa. Borders, edges and third spaces are revisited through the notion of the ecotone, a transitional zone between two ecosystems. If the term has primarily been used by biologists and ecologists, the metaphorical angle proves to be fruitful as it authorizes transdisciplinary approaches and empowers fresh perspectives. In French and in English, this volume aims to contribute to scholarship already published across various disciplinary fields and to participate in the development of Indoceanic studies. The authors of the volume rethink those ecotonal sites that are spaces of frictions as much as spaces of fusion.

FEARFUL SYMMETRY. The Search for Beauty in Modern Physics

Fearful Symmetry brings the incredible discoveries of contemporary physics within everyone's grasp. A. Zee, a distinguished physicist and skillful expositor, tells the exciting story of how today's theoretical physicists are following Einstein in their search for the beauty and simplicity of Nature. Animated by a sense of reverence and whimsy, the book describes the majestic sweep and accomplishments of twentieth-century physics. In the end, we stand in awe before the grand vision of modern physics-one of the greatest chapters in the intellectual history of humankind. "Fearful Symmetry tells the story of modem physics and contemporary physicists in a most understandable and vivid way. It makes the 'fearful' symmetry simple and accessible, and the burning tigers lively and human. An excellent rendition and an outstanding achievement." -T. D. Lee, Nobel Laureate in Physics "To a layman like myself, totally unversed in modern theoretical physics, Zee's book comes as an illumination.
