The McCarthy collection. Sculpture
This substantial catalogue explores a remarkable collection of medieval European sculpture. Richly detailed with plentiful illustrations and original research, it is a notable contribution to medieval scholarship. The McCarthy collection comprises more than 150 specimens of medieval European sculpture, produced over a period of nearly 600 years. A testimony to the comprehensiveness of Robert McCarthy's interest in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, its geographical, chronological and typological breadth place it among the most important of its kind in private hands. Including a few early examples from Merovingian France, Anglo-Saxon England and Visigothic Spain, its holdings have a strong focus on Romanesque art, with over fifty capitals and other architectural carvings from Iberia, France and the Italian Peninsula. Some of these pieces are associable with such notable workshops as those of Gislebertus, the Master of Agüero and Compostela's Master Mateo, while a great number can be closely compared to anonymous works in major and provincial sites. Notable monuments like the monastic powerhouse of Cluny or the abbatial churches of Autun and Savigny are represented through important sculptural fragments - most published here for the first time. The transition to the Gothic style and the period of its splendour, particularly in France, are witnessed by an ample selection of statuary and architectural fragments - some traceable to such important buildings as Noyon cathedral and Paris' Notre Dame, and others, more loosely, to the artistic circles that gravitated around the great projects of the age. Freestanding sculpture in stone or wood, including a small but precious nucleus of Virgin and Child statuary and some Spanish polychrome figures, constitutes an interesting subset of the collection's late medieval holdings, as do some especially fine examples of Italian trecento sculpture. Enriched with outstanding photography by Barney Hindle and Mark French, entries aim to provide detailed stylistic, iconographic and contextual analyses, with special attention paid to comparanda in public and other private collections. This approach, complemented in some cases by petrographic analysis, has allowed the. authors to connect much of the material presented in these pages with specific buildings, workshops or regional schools, contributing to a better understanding of the pieces themselves, their original settings and their cultural and artistic milieux. This catalogue follows the publication of three volumes dedicated to Robert McCarthy's vast collection of Western miniatures and manuscript leaves (2018-2021), and is part of an ambitious project to document the entirety of his holdings - which also include notable selections of medieval ivories, stained glass and East Christian Art.

Chroniques romaines. Du concile Vatican II au pape Benoît XVI 1962-2012
Médiéviste de formation, Jean Chélini a été l'élève puis l'assistant de Georges Duby à la faculté de lettres d'Aix-en-Provence. Il a ensuite enseigné l'histoire du Moyen Age à Montpellier, mais il n'a jamais pu se déprendre de son intérêt pour l'histoire religieuse immédiate, en particulier pour celle de la papauté. C'est ainsi qu'il a été envoyé comme correspondant de presse à Rome pour suivre les travaux du concile Vatican II et qu'il s'est retrouvé régulièrement dans la Ville éternelle pour couvrir les grands événements du Saint-Siège. Il est devenu ainsi un familier de la Rome pontificale. Au bout de toutes ces années, presque un demi-siècle, traversant les pontificats de Jean XXIII, de Paul VI, de Jean-Paul II et aujourd'hui de Benoît XVI, ces " Chroniques romaines ", parues dans la presse quotidienne ou périodique, écrites d'une plume légère et rassemblées en un même ouvrage, offrent au lecteur un panorama circonstancié, parfois anecdotique, mais souvent révélateur des événements et des hommes du microcosme romain. A travers l'actualité, l'histoire sert de socle à l'auteur pour étayer son propos. Cinquante ans après l'ouverture du concile Vatican II, ces textes nous renseignent sur les actes, les gestes et les enseignements des papes contemporains, sur l'Eglise de Rome et, à travers elle, sur l'univers catholique. -- Jean Chélini, who trained as a medievalist, was first Georges Duby's pupil then his assistant at the Aix-en-Provence faculty of literature. Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism
This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

D’un empire, l’autre. Premières rencontres entre la France et le Japon au XIXe siècle
Au début des années 1800, les Japonais apprennent avec stupeur l'existence d'un empire en constante expansion dirigé par un certain Napoléon alors que les orientalistes parisiens commencent à réunir des livres sur cet archipel de l'autre bout du monde. La circulation de l'information établit une forme de "diplomatie de l'esprit" . A l'orée du XXe siècle, une nouvelle ère a déjà commencé : Japonais et Français ont établi des relations officielles depuis un demi-siècle et se côtoient désormais sur l'échiquier politique international. D'un empire, l'autre parcourt le premier siècle des contacts (indirects puis directs) entre la France et le Japon. Alors que les ombres d'un ancien monde se voient congédiées de la scène de l'histoire, la marche des temps modernes apparaît inexorable. Les auteurs de ce volume ont délibérément choisi d'explorer des thématiques différentes de celles souvent associées aux relations bilatérales telles que l'histoire diplomatique stricto sensu ou encore le succès du japonisme. German-Irish Corporate Relationships
The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

Everyday Men
This study is about everyday men. They are approached through a unique marriage of biblical theology and empirical research which gives birth to a missionary challenge. Part One attempts to build a theological foundation for looking at people from the aspect of belief and unbelief. It sees this distinction as a crucial theme in the biblical material which remains relevant to men everywhere. The author discovers five elements of Christian belief in the biblical material while unbelief spans the five elements by its void, denial, or choice of an alternative. Part Two starts with a random sample, in-depth interview of fifty men in a "working-class" area of Birmingham, England. The interviews attempt to discover the nature and saliency of the men's belief and unbelief in the Christian faith. The analysis stresses the qualitative response with the emphasis on listening to the men describe their lives, values, beliefs, and lack of beliefs in their own words. The findings are also compared to other related studies, prompting some conclusions regarding the meaning of these findings. The author attempts to bring the biblical material to bear on the findings about ordinary people and asks whether they can be described as believers or unbelievers. From this starting point, it becomes obvious that the scope of unbelief is very broad. Part Three takes the understanding of God's Word and men's words and moves toward a missiological goal of approaching unbelievers with a gospel for today. It sees both the content and context of the gospel as important. The cultural problem is briefly considered and specific approaches are suggested in relation to the climate of unbelief in "working-class" English culture.

Arrival of Mira Foreword Arrival of Mira tells the story of a beautiful young woman who held true to her faith despite many severe hardships. Mira was still only a child when she decided that Ginidhara Gopal (Lord Krishna) was her 'husband' and that she wanted to devote her life to serving and worshipping him. Later, the now orphaned Mira was married to Bhojan, the prince of Mewar and son of Rana, the king of Chittoor. Bhojan fell in love at first sight but found it hard to understand Mira's utter devotion to Ginidhara. Mira suffered at the hands of her in-laws who could not understand the depth of her love for Ginidhara and wanted her to follow their worship of Kali (in the form of Durga). Mira suffered imprisonment in a haunted palace and then exile for her beliefs. Even her friends were persecuted because of her uncompromising love for Lord Krishna. Eventually Bhojan came to understand his wife's piety. The story is told in the form of a musical play where the love story is interwoven with delightful songs and dances. The character of Mira is one to win the hearts of all who read of her. Her gentle devotion and steadfast belief are an inspiration to everyone. Although the prominence of Matthew's anti-Jewish polemic has been widely recognized in recent years, curiously little attention has thus far been given to the contribution made by chapters 11 and 12 to this theme. Often dismissed as a loose compendium of controversy-stories, this narrative section actually displays a solid, thematic unity dealing with the tragic fact of Jesus'rejection by the covenant people, Israel. Matthew's usually thoughtful style is evident in these chapters as he proceeds in a quite independent manner to clarify the unexpectedly humble nature of the messianic mission, the consequences of its rejection and the identity of the true people of God.

The Power and the Glory. Graham Greene
The Power and the Glory est un roman atypique en ce sens qu'il tranche sur la production romanesque anglo-saxonne de tradition protestante pour s'inscrire dans un courant catholique plus minoritaire. Issu d'un voyage que Greene fit au Mexique en 1938, le livre prend pour cadre la persécution des prêtres dans l'état du Tabasco. Le récit fait la preuve du brio de Greene, transposant les techniques cinématographiques qui le fascinaient, jouant sur le mélange des genres, mêlant fatum et grotesque, chasse à l'homme et questionnement spirituel. On retrouve le décor triste, écrasé de soleil, les scènes fortes, les stratégies de répétition et le sens du dialogue très théâtral caractéristiques de Greene. Mais le roman se démarque du message monolithique en jouant sur le paradoxe, l'ambiguïté, l'interrogation. Le lecteur doit alors repérer des indices et des pistes de lecture pour mieux percevoir les enjeux du texte, et apprécier à sa juste mesure cette écriture moins simple qu'il n'y paraît de prime abord.

The Biblical Vision of the Human Person
Although modern study of the Bible has made impressive philological advances, it lacks an adequate philosophical frame of reference that would link the symbolism of the Biblical narrative to the problems of human existence. The present work sets out to provide the germ of a philosophy of language and human consciousness that would serve as a basis for a proper exegesis of the Biblical text. Part One establishes the historical, philosophical and hermeneutical framework by examining the link between experience, symbolization and the structure of human consciousness as elaborated historically in myth and philosophy. Part Two applies this framework to representative anthropological texts from the Old and New Testaments in order to forge a link between the Biblical symbolism and the fundamental problems of human existence. Part Three draws attention to the implications of the inquiry for a philosophical anthropology and a more comprehensive hermeneutical framework.
