Dieu, le souverain et la cour. Stratégies et rituels de légitimation du pouvoir impérial et royal dans l’Antiquité tardive et au haut Moyen Âge
Durant l'Antiquité tardive, la nature du pouvoir impérial romain fut profondément bouleversée sous l'effet de deux phénomènes majeurs : la montée en puissance du christianisme, qui devint religion d'Etat au début du IVe siècle, et l'apparition d'un monde multipolaire en raison de l'émergence de royaumes progressivement reconnus comme autant d'interlocuteurs politiques. Ces questions se firent d'autant plus pressantes qu'en dépit de l'affirmation du caractère monarchique du pouvoir impérial depuis le milieu du IIIe siècle, aucune règle successorale institutionnelle n'existait, obligeant les empereurs à susciter en permanence un consensus social pour affirmer leur autorité. Pour cela, ils se mirent en scène dans des cérémonies qui, depuis leur investiture jusqu'à leurs funérailles, avaient pour but d'asseoir leur légitimité et celle de leur successeur. Quant aux royaumes germaniques établis sur le sol de l'Empire, ils prirent corps dans leurs interactions avec le pouvoir impérial et avec les aristocraties romaines locales puis firent, à leur tour, du christianisme un moyen de renforcer leur légitimité. Cette étude examine les ressorts sur lesquels a reposé le pouvoir dans l'Empire romain en Occident aussi bien qu'en Orient et dans les premiers royaumes germaniques de la fin du IIIe siècle à la fin du VIe siècle. Quel rôle jouèrent la mise en scène des rituels politiques et les discours produits par le pouvoir lui-même ? Comment la christianisation du pouvoir impérial et royal se manifesta-t-elle ? Quel fut le rôle de la cour dans les stratégies de légitimation ? Comment les rois inscrivirent-ils leur pouvoir dans des cadres symboliques inspirés des cours impériales et de celles des gouverneurs des provinces ? En s'efforçant de répondre à ces questions, ce livre se propose d'analyser les transformations du pouvoir impérial romain dans l'Antiquité tardive et à l'époque protobyzantine ainsi que les expérimentations politiques à partir desquelles se construisit le modèle de la royauté médiévale en Europe occidentale. During Late Antiquity, the nature of Roman imperial power was profoundly reshaped by two major phenomena : the rise of Christianity, which became the state religion at the beginning of the fourth century, and the development of a multipolar world with the emergence of kingdoms progressively recognized as political interlocutors. These issues became particularly pressing because, despite the affirmation of the monarchical character of imperial power since the middle of the third century, no institutional rule of succession had been established, requiring the emperors to constantly build a social consensus in order to assert their authority. To do this, they put themselves on stage in ceremonies which, from their investiture to their funeral, were intended to establish their legitimacy and that of their successor. At the same time, the Germanic kingdoms established on the soil of the Empire were shaped by their interactions with the imperial power and with the local Roman aristocracies and used Christianity as a way of reinforcing their legitimacy. This study examines the mechanisms on which power relied in the Roman Empire, both in the West and the East, as well as in the early Germanic kingdoms from the end of the third to the end of the sixth century. What role was played by the staging of political rituals and discourses produced by the power itself ? How did the Christianization of imperial and royal power manifest itself ? What was the role of the court in the strategies of legitimization ? How did the kings inscribe their power in symbolic frameworks inspired by the Imperial courts and those of the provincial governors ? To answer these questions, this book analyzes the transformations of Roman imperial power in Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period, as well as the political experiments from which the model of medieval kingship in Western Europe was constructed.

The old-fashioned harvest festivals, which take place in August, give us a chance to rediscover the history of our countryside, that of our grandparents in the 40s, 50s and 60s. It was a time of intense life on the farms, when many hands were needed to harvest a plot of land with the tools of those years, and the farmers helped each other in the heat of the summer, so as to finish before the rains returned.

Based on extensive research this work gives a detailed account and a reappraisal of Edward Westermarck's thought. Westermarck had versatile relations to Victorian evolutionists (Wallace, Tylor, Spencer), and to British social anthropologists (Frazer, Haddon, Rivers, Malinowski) and psychologists (Shand, Sully). Westermarck was a pioneer of anthropological fieldwork, and his writings on the history of marriage and on the origin and development of moral ideas are modern classics. He was a transitional figure between evolutionism, on the one hand, and functionalism and structuralism, on the other hand. Westermarck's theories of exogamy and incest, and his notions of psychological ethics, moral emotions and concepts, and expanding morality were referred to by Durkheim and Freud, as they are referred to by present-day evolutionary theorists. The search for mankind continues to be of current interest.

Differential effects of early and late nocturnal sleep on the consolidation of declarative and nondeclarative memory
Nocturnal sleep apparently promotes the translation of labile short-term memories into more stable long-term memories. The present studies suggest that the sleep-related consolidation of hippocampus-mediated memories benefits primarily from early nocturnal sleep. A reduced activation of hippocampal glucocorticoid receptors and a neocortico-hippocampal 'off-line' mode during this part of sleep may be of particular relevance for this phenomenon. In contrast, non hippocampus-mediated memories benefit primarily from late nocturnal sleep. In addition to a critical amount of REM sleep, other, yet unknown factors may contribute to the consolidation of non hippocampus-mediated memories during late nocturnal sleep.

In this series of papers, we investigate the relative index theorem from the point of view of algebraic analysis. On a complex manifold X, let M he a coherent Dx-module and F an IR-mnstruc-tible sheaf. The complex RHompx (M, RHom(F, Ox)) is the complex of solutions of the system of PDE represented by M in the sheaf of generalized holomorphic functions associated to F. A natural problem is to find conditions under which such a complex has finite dimensional global cohomology and then to compute the corresponding Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove the finiteness theorem when (M, F) has compact support and is "elliptic", i.e. : char(M) n SS(F) C TxX where char(M) is the characteristic variety of M, SS(F) is the micro-support of F and TxX is the zero section of the cotangent bundle. In fact, we give a relative version of this finiteness result together with the associated duality theorem and Künneth formula. Our methods rely upon results of functional analysis over a .sheaf of Fréchet algebras obtained by one of the authors. Next, we attach a "microloeal Order class" µeu(M, F) E H2dx char M+SSF (T X ; D) to any elliptic pair (M, F) and prove that, under natural assumptions, this class is compatible with direct images, inverse images and external products. In particular, we get the index formula : X(RP(X ; RHom(M x F ; Ox))) = f yeu(M, F) T2xx (M) = fTX yeu (M) U yeu (F). When F = CM and X is a complexification of the real analytic manifold M, our salts for the pair (M, F) give an index theorem for elliptic systems and we discuss its relations with the Ariyah-Singer theorem.

Indigenization of Language in the African Francophone Novel
Indigenization of Language in the African Francophone Novel : A New Literary Canon discusses the question of indigenization in the African Francophone novel. Analyzing the prose narratives of Nazi Boni, Ahmadou Kourouma, and Patrice Nganang, this book contends that African literature written in European languages is primarily a creative translation process. Recourse to European languages as a medium of expressing African imagination, worldview, and cultures in fictional writing poses problems of intelligibility. Developed to express and reflect Western worldviews and sensibilities, European languages are employed by African writers to convey messages that seem to be at variance with European imagination. These writers find themselves writing in languages they wish to subvert through the technique of literary indigenization. The significance of this study resides in its raising awareness to the hurdles that literary creativity in a polyglossic context may present to readers and translators. This book provides answers to intriguing questions centering on the problematic of translation in contemporary African literature. It is a contribution to current research aimed at unraveling the conundrum surrounding the language question in African Europhone fiction, particularly the cultural functions of translation in literature. Potential translation problems have to be addressed in order to make African literature written in European languages intelligible to global readership. With the advent of globalization, transcultural communication has become an activity of enormous importance to the international community. It is a subject of great interest to translators, linguists, language instructors, and literary theorists.

Dans ce premier recueil de poésies l'auteur nous invite à partager avec des mots simples une aventure du coeur où la candeur, la gravité et l'humour s'entremêlent pour exprimer les émois, les craintes et les espérances de l'amant solitaire. La femme sublimée vit entre ciel et réalité quotidienne. Tantôt le vieil adolescent-poète aimerait qu'elle se rapproche de lui, accepte de le suivre, là où il n'y a ni tapage ni grillage, voudrait qu'elle le comprenne et l'accepte dans sa douce nature tout en l'aidant à être plus dur. Tantôt il lui affirme qu'il a la force requise pour la protéger comme un roi. Ces chansons pleines de soies et de drôleries portent la marque d'un regard tourné vers le haut, qu'il s'agisse de Dieu, d'un idéal de pureté ou d'un monde où la justice serait l'unique valeur. Mais François Tassin sait aussi être lucide sur le monde d'aujourd'hui et sur les folies qui sévissent. Si l'aventure n'est pas toujours à la hauteur des rêves, le poète laisse toujours la porte ouverte pour que le vent de l'espérance entre et enchante. Sa longue chanson adressée à l'âme-soeur devient aussi la nôtre et continue à résonner en nous longtemps après que nous l'ayons écoutée dans la nuit éclaircie. In this first collection of poetries the author invites us to share with simple words an adventure of the heart where the innocence, the gravity and the humor become entangled to express the emotions, the fears and the expectations of the solitary lover. The sublimated woman lives between sky and daily reality. Sometimes the old teenager-poet would like that she gets closer to him, agrees to follow him, where there is neither noise nor wire netting, would want that she understands him and accepts him in his soft nature quite there the helper to be harder. Sometimes he asserts her that he has the strength required to protect her as king. These songs full of silks and jokes carry the mark of a sour look upward, that it is about God, about an ideal of purity or about a world where the justice would be the unique value. But François Tassin knows also how to be lucid on the world of today and on the madnesses which rage. If the adventure is not still as high as the dreams, the poet always leaves the open door so that the wind of the hope enters and enchants. His long song sent to the soul mate also becomes ours and continues to resound in us long after we listened to her at night cleared up.

This dictionary is two things in one : an alphabetical compilation of acronyms and abbreviations together with their full forms and an inverted index, which gives the user thematic access to the information contained in the data base. The more than 13.000 entries are an attempt to lighten the burden of language teachers and applied linguists, translators and interpreters, librarians and administrators, whose job it is to mediate in and between language communities in daily or intermittent contact with the scourge of acronyms and abbreviations. Hymns: The Making and Shaping of a Theology for the Whole People of God
The theological potential of hymns has never been fully exploited. This study shows how hymns communicate theology and enable those without a formal theological education to enter into theological debate. A nineteenth century collection of English hymns and some contemporary Bemba hymns from the Zambian Copperbelt are examined and compared, within their theological, cultural and social contexts, to discover their response to death, judgement, heaven and hell. From this comparison and a study of how hymns are used in these churches, a model emerges whereby hymns can be used to make and shape theology. This model is observed in a Zambian parish and is also shown in practice in an English parish. Finally, there is a reflection on the implications of this model for Missiology and Ecclesiology showing, among other things, the need for a radical reassessment of the relationship between professional theologians and the rest of the Church.
