Letters to Immanuel Bekker from Henriette Herz, S. Pobeheim and Anna Horkel

"Letters to Immanuel Bekker" is an edition of forty-three letters written between 1817 and 1825 to the German philologist Immanuel Bekker by three friends. Most of the letters are by Henriette Herz, who had a famous salon in Berlin at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The letters from Italy (1817-1819) discuss the life of the German colony there, especially of the German artists. The correspondence contains references to the social, cultural and political life in Berlin and in Germany during the second decade of the nineteenth century.

Educational Assistance and School Development in Sierra Leone

The subject of foreign assistance in education for developing countries has gained increasing importance in the last twenty years. The fact that the efforts of both donors and recipients of assistance have not been entirely satisfying has resulted in repeated appeals for intensified scientific investigation into this area. This study represents a response to those appeals from the point of view of an educationist from a recipient country (Sierra Leone).Using historical and field investigations, case studies of three representative agencies were conducted between 1988 and 1989 : a multilateral (UNESCO), a bilateral (British) and a private (Baptist Church). The results indicate that both the approach and goals of aid agencies as well as the degree of involvement of target groups leave a lot to be desired. On the basis of these results, recommendations are made for future cooperation.

Autobiography: Self Into Form

"The autobiographical impulse" dominated German-language literature of the 1970's, finding its expression in autobiographies of crisis, women's coming-to-consciousness, and disrupted childhoods. This study examines the historical, sociological, political and literary-historical context for this phenomenon, and in so doing engages the critical international discussion of autobiography as a changing genre. Detailed analyses of works by Ingeborg Bachmann, Elisabeth Plessen, Christa Wolf and Peter Handke suggest new critical approaches to autobiographical form. The author provides an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources, as well as a chronological table of autobiographical works of the decade.

Morality and Politics in Nigeria

Before the Nigerian civil war, and even after the war till 1982, Nigeria was regarded as a wealthy nation in comparison with other African countries. However, for the past 30 years, struggle for power has resulted in political instability, moral degeneracy and under-development. The economy of the country has collapsed and millions of Nigerians are now enveloped in poverty, hunger, disease, ignorance, unemployment etc. The root cause of this unhealthy situation for the country is corruption and moral degradation. The only way out of the Nigerian ugly situation seems to be the integration of morality in Nigerian politics. This research work therefore aims at suggesting avenues of restoring man's original dignity within a corrupt and unjust social and political setting in Nigeria.

Mass Culture Criticism and «Dissent»

Mass Culture Criticism and 'Dissent' by Lou Anne Bulik offers a provocative new look at the debate over mass culture in American magazines during the post World War II years. Bulik traces the influence of the Frankfurt School's analysis of mass culture on American intellectuals ; explores the course of the mass culture discussion in Politics, Partisan Review, Daedalus, Diogenes, and Dissent ; and suggests that Dissent's approach to the issue differed substantially from that of other magazines. Because Dissent focused on the impact of mass culture on the mind, Bulik suggests that the debate in Dissent was actually an attempt to articulate the presentiment that mass culture, particularly through the paradigm of television, would change patterns of thought and understanding. The study concludes with a look at recent criticism which lends newfound weight to Dissent's discussion of mass culture in the 1950s and early 1960s.

The Spiritual Narratives of Adoptive Parents

Although much attention has been given to the various social and psychological experiences of two essential parts of the adoption triad – adopted persons and birth parents – adoptive parents are largely overlooked in the literature. More particularly, sparse information has been collected on the issue of adoptive parents' spiritual narratives. Cultural and religious traditions significantly affect how adoptive parents interpret and make spiritual and theological meaning of their unique experiences. Ryan Noel Fraser's cutting-edge research uncovers the distinctive re-authoring process of Christian adoptive parents' faith narratives resulting from the experience of receiving a child through adoption. The Spiritual Narratives of Adoptive Parents is ideal for courses in family studies, marriage and the family, adoption studies, pastoral theology, pastoral counseling, Christian counseling, theological anthropology, and practical theology.

VARIATION IN LEAF STRUCTURE. An Ecophysiological Perspective

Leaf structure is central to plant function, and the implications of this, both to the plant itself and beyond, at the ecosystem level, are now becoming fully realized. This book addresses variation in leaf structure in detail, with reviews and analyses on specific aspects, and in so doing it encapsulates the state of current knowledge in this important area. The impact of leaf structure on plant furiction is certainly far-reaching - it is intimately connected with the rate at which the leaf fixes carbon dioxide, the rate at which the plant can grow and the efficiency with which the plant conserves nutrients. It is therefore related to plant performance in different habitats, and can be used to characterize species, to define functional groups and even to predict the response of species to varying environmental conditions. The impact of variation in leaf structure of component species on community productivity and nutrient cycling is an area of intense current research. The synergy created through the various approaches to leaf structure discussed in this book has produced a unique resource, from which it is possible to identify those issues and challenges that will be the most vital for the future.

Marsilio Ficino in Germany from Renaissance to Enlightenment. A Reception History

The philosopher and humanist Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499) has attracted scholarly attention as translator of Plato, the Corpus Hermeticum, Plotinus and other Neoplatonists, and for his complex synthesis of Platonism and Christianity. While most previous studies of Ficino's reception have focussed on Italy, France, England and Spain, this book presents a comprehensive study of his reception in Germany and neighbouring areas, examining how Northern writers between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries remembered and reinvented Ficino's person and work. Focused chapters examine the ways German authors adapted his theories of the Ancient Theology, melancholia, celestial influence and poetic inspiration, and used his writings in related fields such as alchemy and witchcraft. It also studies those who rejected Ficino's work, providing context for those who embraced his ideas. The most comprehensive bibliography of printed editions of Ficino's work since Kristeller forms the basis for a bibliometric analysis.

François Delaroziere, a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, is the artistic director of the company La Machine, with workshops situated in Nantes and Tournefeuille. His work has always explored the world of moving objects and their theatricality, designing carousels and taking part in the development of urban projects. As a maker of sets and inventions for street theatre, he has been conceiving and overseeing the construction of large-scale theatre machines for over twenty years. Among the most iconic of the urban theatre performances are the Giant, the Rhinoceros, the Little Giants, the Giraffes, the Great Elephant, and the Giant Spiders. He is the figure behind wonderful carousels that turn heads as they travel from one town or city to the next, such as the Magic Roundabout, the Beau Manège in Toulouse, Andrea's Carousel, the Carré Sénart Square Carousel and the Marine Worlds Carousel. He was also the associate designer for the renovation of Le Channel, Scène Nationale de Calais. He is the creator, with Pierre Orefice, of Les Machines de l'lle in Nantes. The Gay Agenda

The "gay agenda" is a rhetorical strategy deployed by the religious right and other social conservatives to magnify fear and hostility of queers. Queers are accused, among other things, of strategizing to recruit children into sexually deviant lifestyles ; dismantling family and marriage as cornerstones of civilization ; and forcing the entertainment industry and court systems to do their bidding. Queers certainly do have an agenda but it is not the one that the religious right claims it is. It is to assert their presence in the public space ; claim and name their identities ; and strategize for social justice in law, schools, and workplaces. The Gay Agenda : Claiming Space, Identity, and Justice claims and reclaims the language of "agenda" and turns the rhetoric of the religious right on its ear. The contributors provide insightful and sharp commentary on gay agendas for human rights, marriage and family, cultural influences, schooling and education, and politics and law.

Starting from the frequent observation that the work capacity of a tropical rural population is rather restricted, the author examines whether this may be attributed to the immediate influence of the tropical climate and/or the state of health of the working population, and what influence work capacity restraints per worker have on agricultural development and planning.

Education in Mission / Mission in Education

The dissertation investigates the work of the Project in Partnership between Black and White which is based in Birmingham, England. The focus of this experiment in theological education is dialogical and intercultural within the British socio-cultural setting. This programme is compared with the Alternative Theological and Staff Development Experiment of Colgate Divinity School in Rochester, New York ; and the Black Church Experience, the Research in Black Church Studies and Research Study in Oral History at Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, Illinois in USA. This study further probes into the trends in general education in South Africa and their influence on the socio-political dynamics and how these in turn influence education for mission. The research analyses these approaches in the light of the work done by the Programme on Theological Education of the World Council of Chruches. The enquiry points to the need to re-think our approach to theological education in all our pluralistic societies.

The Moment

Written representations of momentary phenomena such as the Fall, the kairos, epiphany, the nunc stans, the sublime, dialectical and historical moments of change and moments of deferral are always doomed to fail. However, representational failures at writing have always been turned into a performative success : more writing. The author's reading of the various textualizations of the moment is not historical, but genealogical (Foucault) and not typological, but economical (Derrida); it reveals the moment as an inevitable trope : the deconstruction of a representational moment in a given text reinscribes this moment as the text's performative momentum. This ever shifting meaning of the moment has been followed through literary and philosophical texts from Plato to Beckett.

Always the same story tells the same story in three ways : in short, medium-length and long versions, because we love creating reading experiences. Reading is indeed a journey, not a destination : the end doesn't matter in the end. The short version of the story has been translated into English in this book.

Grenzpfähle der Wirklichkeit- Approaches to the Poetry of R.S. Thomas

R.S. Thomas is one of the most important contemporary poets in Great Britain. The author of this study uses a twofold approach in order to sketch a portrait of his work. On the one hand, R.S. Thomas's historical and literary Welsh background with its particular problems of language and identity is delineated. On the other hand, groups of poems which focus on specific themes are analyzed extensively, so that the principles of the poet's thoughts and the development of his work from the 40s up to the present become transparent.

Exceptions and Rules:- Brecht, Planchon and The Good Person of Szechwan

This book examines the Brechtian influence on Roger Planchon's three stagings of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan (July 1954 ; October 1954 ; December 1958). The meaning of a Brechtian mise en scène is determined by an analysis of the Berliner Ensemble production of the same play (1957). A comparison of these stagings not only reveals the clash between the German and French theatrical traditions but the German mise en scène also provides a point of reference which underlines the similarities and differences between Planchon's and Brecht's staging methods.

Les structures élémentaires de la parenté

In Les Structures Elémentaires de la Parenté, the early opus magnum of French Structuralism, Lévi-Strauss tries to explain the systems of kinship and-marriage in their enormous diversity and their frequently bizarre institutions, by means of a single principle: the exchange. Exchange is perceived to be the manifestation of fundamental structural constants of the human mind which may also be discerned in other subsystems of culture, most obviously in language. This book represents the first great result of the author's life-long research, dedicated to exploring this relationship, which also led him into the fields of the classification-systems of language and of mythology.

Tyne Bytes

The relationships between language variation and social structure within an urban community are far too complex to be adequately handled by traditional methods. The Tyneside Linguistic Survey offers a radical approach to sociolinguistic modelling, using multi-variate techniques. Linguistic and social "clusters" are discovered within a sample of Tyneside speakers by generating classifications based on a wide range of linguistic and social variables. In this study Dr. Jones-Sargent lucidly presents the background and philosophy of the TLS, the implementation of the computer model and an analysis of the results.

Marriage and Divorce in the Plays of Hermann Sudermann

This study investigates Sudermann's plays from a socio-historical and literary-historical perspective. His plays are a response to a crisis of marriage. That crisis had its roots in the Romantic period and came to a head when the conservative Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch was introduced in 1900. Of particular significance is Es lebe das Leben (1902). The manuscripts of this play reveal that here Sudermann moved from a Realist treatment of marital difficulties to an exploration of the crisis of the realist literary system and a search for a Modernist treatment of divorce. His plays on marriage, divorce, courtship and the problems of single men and women constitute a sustained attempt to modify or at times radically to challenge the presentation of marriage in the Realist literary system.

Women's voices. echoes of life experiences in the alps and the plain (17th -19th centuries). Actors, Networks, and Socio-Cultural Activities

The volume is centred on the voices of women belonging to various generations, religious faiths and social classes, and presents a range of possible life courses for women in the Alps during the ancien régime and the early 19th century. Focusing on complex lived experiences that have emerged froma gender-conscious reading of the sources, the contributions illustrate how migration led women to take on roles of responsibility, or to follow their husbands in their careers as artists, traders and businessmen. There also emerges a widespread literacy that is combined with practical skills andknowledge marked by biological, legal and religious preconceptions : features that permeated the communities studied, where ties of family, religion and patronage prevail upon the dichotomy of public sphere/private sphere.

Since 1840, over 700,000 stamps have appeared in over 1,000 different countries, territories or postal authorities. But what are all these countries ? Where are they located ? Which ones are "dead" and which ones are still "alive"? When and for how long had stamps been issued in these countries ? What are all the inscriptions (legends, overprints, currencies...) that allow these stamps to be identified ? What other countries have possibly used the same stamps, for instance by overprinting them ? What happened to the "dead ountries"? This book provides the answers to all these questions. Over 5200 legends, overprints or currencies using either Roman, Gaelic, Greek or Cyrillic letters or even symbols or numbers are listed alphabetically. Each such inscription is heading to the name of the 1024 countries, territories or postal authorities which have issued or continue to issue stamps today. These "countries" are inserted as shaded sections in the same alphabetical list where essential data on the country and its postal activity are summarized. The Handbook of Philatelic Research is a complement to the philatelic catalogues and a unique tool that will assist the stamp collector in stamp identification, search for new stamps and organisation of the collection.
