This monograph is the last part of the scientific publication of the programme entitled "Spaces and Rites. The Archaeology of Worship in the Sanctuaries of the Mediterranean World", common to the French Schools at Athens and Rome (2012-2016), and brings together ten essays. Faced with the semantic wealth of literary genres and narrative processes, archaeology provides us with a huge variety of material information that makes absolute sense and covers at least three areas, architecture and the organisation of spaces, iconographical objects and programmes, as well as the practices carried out in sacred spaces, be they ritualistic or not. The main issue here is the place of religion in the everyday life of the cities : the Gods were everywhere, "in spaces with little human presence", inside and outside the walls, in urban spaces, in the private sphere but also, and above all in the wild. Here, researchers that specialise in ancient sanctuaries analyse the way the divine is perceived, in all of its forms.

This work consists of a collection of eight papers on the syntax of English as spoken and written by educated Singaporeans. The topics dealt with include various aspects of verb-phrase structure and use, comparative constructions, and relative pronoun selection. Some of the papers are dialectological in focus and some theoretical, but all were researched through questionnaire-based interviews and/or examination of bodies of written material. Eleven Singapore researchers collaborated with the editor in this project.

The conference was organised by the Centre Camille Jullian - UMR 7299, which, on the occasion of ISBSA 15, celebrated 50 years of activity in the field of nautical archaeology. Klimonas An Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic Village in Cyprus Un village néolithique pré-céramique ancien à Chypre Klimonas is the oldest Mediterranean island village. Occupied ca. 8 800 cal BC, it postpones by several centuries the Neolithic presence in Cyprus, at that time located more than 80 km offshore. The village extended over more than 5, 500 mC, facing the sea, 2 km from the famous pre-pottery site of Shillourokambos and near rich flint outcrops. Excavations (2009-2016) revealed that it was composed of circular or oval earthen buildings 3-6 m in diameter, notched into the slope, modestly fitted out and organised around a semi-buried 10 m communal building. The construction techniques, the abundance of either knapped or polished stone material, together with ornaments, symbolic objects, and plants and animal remains, as well as the 52 radiometric dates, point to the end of the Levantine Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA). The presence of a communal building, rebuilt numerous times over the course of several decades, also points to the same conclusion. The villagers gathered seeds and fruits and cultivated wild starch and einkorn, recently imported from the continent. They primarily hunted small endemic wild boar, the only large mammal species attested on the island at that time and, secondarily, birds. They did not eat fish or marine shellfish. Domestic dogs, mice and cats brought from the continent also lived in the village. The remains of this cultivator-hunter community testify to the early extension of the Near Eastern Neolithic and to unsuspected seafaring skills, substantially improving our knowledge of the Neolithic transition in the Mediterranean. Klimonas est le plus ancien village insulaire de Méditerranée. Occupé autour de 8 800 av. n. è. , il recule de plusieurs siècles le début de la présence néolithique à Chypre, à cette époque déjà située à plus de 80 km du continent. Le village s'étendait sur 5 500 mC au moins, face à la mer, à 2 km du célèbre site pré-céramique de Shillourokambos et au contact de riches sources de silex. Les fouilles (2009-2016) ont montré qu'il était composé d'édifices de terre crue (bauge) de 3 à 6 m de diamètre, circulaires ou ovalaires, encochés dans la pente, modestement aménagés, organisés autour d'un bâtiment communautaire semi-enterré de 10 m de diamètre. Les techniques de construction, l'abondant mobilier de pierre taillée, le macro-outillage, les parures et objets symboliques, les restes de plantes et les ossements animaux, tout comme les 52 datations radiométriques renvoient à la fin du Néolithique pré-céramique A levantin (PPNA). La présence d'un bâtiment communautaire, plusieurs fois reconstruit en quelques décennies, le confirme. Les villageois pratiquaient la cueillette et cultivaient l'amidonnier et l'engrain sauvages, récemment importés du continent. Ils chassaient un petit sanglier endémique, seule espèce de grand mammifère attestée sur l'île à cette époque, et, secondairement, des oiseaux. Poissons et coquillages marins n'étaient pas consommés. Des chiens domestiques, des souris et des chats de souche continentale vivaient dans le village. Les vestiges de cette communauté d'agriculteurs-chasseurs témoignent de l'extension précoce du premier Néolithique du Proche-Orient et d'une maîtrise insoupçonnée de la navigation. Il enrichit de manière substantielle nos connaissances sur la transition néolithique en Méditerranée.

deValence is a graphic design studio founded in Paris in 2001. Published on the occasion of its exhibition at kyoto ddd gallery, this book presents a selection of works designed in the field of theater, architecture, design, publishing and contemporary art. deValence pays particular attention to typography and the process of shape forming. In tandem with this prolific activity, the studio has an associated publishing house, B42, which produces works that seek to stimulate reflection on and discussion of visual cultures and design as well as the role of the designer in society. Presented as a response to contemporary global issues (such as sustainable development, interculturality or democracy), Global Citizenship Education (GCE) aims to "open people's eyes and minds to the realities of the world and awaken them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and human rights for all". Given that GCE is now perceived as a means of bringing contemporary world issues into classrooms, teachers and school principals are increasingly encouraged to adopt it. Indeed, new skills frameworks require students to develop knowledge on global issues, while students themselves are demanding this education because they seek the means to play a greater role in the world. Often addressed in the form of social or environmental issues perceived as being of serious concern, GCE is expected to feature increasingly in the curricula of schools and universities in the future. But in Belgium and around the world, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has been the subject of debate in recent years. This handbook reflects these various debates. Initially published in French, it is, above all, an attempt to compensate for the absence of texts on the subject from the French-speaking world, notably from the Belgian research and practice world. This English version enhances the international visibility of the vital academic, institutional, and professional sectors addressing GCE in Belgium, and highlights the specific features of GCE in this country. It will be particularly useful for students, teachers and practitioners, and everyone who wants to understand the challenges of Global Citizenship Education today.

Sur cette gravure, le dieu norrois Thor est présenté comme le dieu du Kaiser allemand, détruisant des cathédrales gothiques et ainsi la civilisation. Thor symbolisait ainsi la nature prétendument barbare des Allemands. Cet article se propose de cartographier les chemins et opérations historiques qui conduisirent le dieu nordique Thor de l'Islande du XIIIe siècle en France du XXe siècle en le transformant en symbole de l'hostilité allemande. Des contextes importants sont l'Anneau de Nibelung de Richard Wagner et tout particulièrement la philologie comparée. Ces observations peuvent servir de point de départ pour une théorie des formes narratives du savoir social en circulation culturelle. De l'avis de tous les connaisseurs, Rosmersholm (1886) est le chef-d'oeuvre d'Ibsen, même si ce n'est ni la plus connue ni la plus fréquemment jouée de ses pièces. On peut se demander pourquoi. Cette pièce, extrêmement difficile à jouer, est favorable à toutes les confusions ou erreurs d'interprétation possibles, pièce dont il est permis d'avancer qu'Ibsen n'est jamais allé aussi loin dans sa quête du tragique. Cet article cherche à élucider les modalités et les raisons d'un tel chef-d'oeuvre dans une perspective moderniste. Sans entrer dans la discussion sur le post-tragique, il s'agit de cerner ce qui fait en soi l'originalité moderne de cette étrange pièce. En a-t-elle été chassée par des critiques phallocrates, comme ont pu le clamer les partisans des gender studies dans les années 1970 ? Son oeuvre était-elle trop datée ? Dans les années 20 et 30, l'écrivain finlandais Olavi Paavolainen (1903-1964) s'est donné la tâche d'interroger et analyser la modernité dans toutes ses manifestations et dans tous les lieux où elle se fait ressentir. Ce projet l'amène à s'intéresser d'abord à la modernité jouissive et émancipatrice des années folles, ensuite à la montée du totalitarisme en Europe et, après ce tournant dysphorique, aux pays de l'Amérique latine, jugés capables de transcender les conflits européens. Les récits de voyage de Paavolainen produisent ainsi un décentrement de la modernité ; en même temps, ils expriment la crise de la subjectivité de l'auteur, fondée sur l'idéal européen du cosmopolitisme. Le long chef-d'oeuvre de Tammsaare, écrit durant l'après-guerre et retraçant 50 ans d'histoire de l'Estonie, apparaît comme une synthèse extraordinairement originale de plusieurs genres européens différents parmi lesquels un roman rural dans sa première partie et un roman du Crime et du Châtiment, sorte de tragédie familiale du péché originel ; mais on remarque aussi de fortes analogies avec trois formes de romans d'éducation : un roman pédagogique tragi-comique à l'Ecole de M. Maurus, le roman d'une éducation sentimentale douloureuse et par-dessus tout un roman de la transformation d'un jeune homme qui vient de son village en intellectuel avec son ironie dévastatrice contre toutes les valeurs sociales et religieuses, sa "conscience malheureuse" et ses engagements à demi forcés dans la vie politique ou dans sa vie privée qui rappellent d'autres grands romans contemporains, de Musil, de Proust, de Thomas Mann et de Svevo. In 1915, the Epinal printing company, known for its often amusing illustrated one page prints, published a summary of the first year of the First World War, depicting the Old Norse God Thor as the god of the German Kaiser, destroying gothic cathedrals and thus civilization. Thor thus served as symbol for the supposedly barbarous nature of the Germans. In my article, I try to map some of the ways and historical operations that took the Old Norse god Thor from 13th century Iceland to 20th century France and transformed him to a symbol for German warfare. Major contexts appear to be Richard Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung and particularly comparative philology. These observations, I propose, could serve as a starting point for a theory of narrating forms of social knowledge in cultural circulation. In the opinion of all the experts, Rosmersholm (1886) is the masterpiece of Ibsen, even though it is neither the most famous nor the most frequently performed of his plays. One may wonder why. This piece, extremely difficult to play, supports all the confusions and errors of interpretation possible, and it is permitted to put forward that Ibsen never went as far in his tragedy quest. This article seeks to clarify how and why such a masterpiece in a modernist perspective. Did male critics expel her from them, as researchers in "gender studies" began to claim in the 1970s ? Or was it that her works were thought to be too old-fashioned ? In the 1920s and 30s, the Finnish writer Olavi Paavolainen (1903-1964) took up the task of exploring and analysing modernity in all its manifestations and in all the places where it was felt. This project focalised first on the emancipatory and joyful modernity of the années folles, then on the rising of totalitarism in Europe and, after this dysphoric turn, on Latin America, considered capable of transcending the European conflicts. Paavolainen's travelogues produce thus a decentring of modernity, while leading at the same to the crisis of the author's subjectivity, based on the European ideal of cosmopolitism. Tammsaare's long masterpiece, written after the first world war and retracing 50 years of Estonian history, is an extraordinary and original synthesis of several different literary European genres among which in its first part a "Rural Novel" and also a novel of "Crime and Punishment", a kind of Tragedy of Original Sin in a family but there is also a strong analogy between Taamsaare's Justice and Truth and three kinds of Educational Novels : a tragi-comical pedagogical novel in Mr Maurus's College, a painful sentimental apprenticeship and above all the novel of a young man coming from his village who becomes an "Intellectual" with his devastating irony against all social and religious values, his "Unhappy Consciousness" and his half forced bad commitments in political or private life which recall other great contemporary novels by Musil, Proust, Thomas Mann, Svevo. Even though francophone literature is expanding its territory throughout the world, its status remains ambiguous on the global field and in canonization processes. The analysis is focusing on a re-evaluation of the literary canon in the academic context abroad. Various didactic demands are revealed as essential criteria for a selection divergent from the traditional canon. It is also found that Swedish universities promote both French high-status literature, extra-occidental francophone literature and prize-winning literature, which is often commercial.

The fourth volume in our "Hidden Treasures" series is dedicated to the Riace Bronzes, two of the very few ancient bronze statues that have survived to this day and now preserved in the National Archeological Museum in Reggio Calabria. The articles which are published in this volume investigate, on the basis of selected cases of mainly European winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, the meaning of the Prize and the award in the Prize winner's own countries. The Single European Act was formally approved by the European Council in February 1986. When Maastricht hit the headlines in the early 1990s, the Single European Act instantly became history. However, it was the Single Market programme - the main content of the Single European Act - and the years of preparation leading up to it which really gave new momentum to European integration after the "Eurosclerosis" of the 1970s. Contemporary epistemology and philosophy of science devote a central place to questions of the following sort : When are two conceptual frameworks equivalent ? Under what conditions is one scientific theory reducible to another ? This essay attempts to reach a clearer grasp of these issues by providing a logical analysis of intertheory translation and reduction. Taking first order logic as a starting point, several classical theorems on definability and interpolation are generalised so as to obtain a model-theoretic characterisation of some basic types of reductive relations between theories. This account is later extended by adopting a very general and powerful semantical framework inspired by abstract logic.
