The Stutter of History

This French-language catalogue accompanies a major retrospective exhibition of Thomas Demand's work at Jeu de Paume, Paris, as part of a worldwide tour. Thomas Demand has spent the last two and a half decades bringing together his talents as both a sculptor and a photographer to capture the feedback loop between the world we inhabit and the photographic documents of it which lie at the root of our contemporary image culture. Bringing together a wide-ranging survey of photographs that span the arc of his career, The Stutter of History provides both an overview of the artist's way of seeing the world and lesson in how we might approach the onslaught of historical events that we consume through the world of images. This extensive book displays the breadth and depth of Demand's artistic accomplishment, demonstrating in one volume why he is considered one of the world's foremost contemporary artists. Includes new short stories by award-winning authors Ali Smith and Maylis de Kerangal written in response to a work by Demand, as well as illuminating essays by Douglas Fogle, curator of the exhibition, and critic Margaret Iversen. All texts published in French language. Co-published with Jeu de Paume

The City of Stardust

" M. A. The Secret of Sounding Native

Proclitics have traditionally been considered either as erratic sloppiness of articulation or as morphologically determined weak forms. It could be shown that the reduction typical of the unstressed position preceding a nucleus is highly regular and further-reaching than so far assumed. A multi-dimensional model of phonology analyzes the proclitic position as a subsystem of the phonology of English with its own inventory of distinctive units and its characteristic dynamic processes of reduction.

Cyclical Learning Processes in Second Language Production

This study of adult second language learning focuses on those aspects of syntactic development which show that the orders in which structures appear reflect principles of behaviour organization in language production. These principles facilitate learning under conditions where attentional capacity is limited. Learning to put the structures of a language into practice is characterised by recurrent orders of "automation through repetition". Orders of emergence may be only indirectly related to orders of acquisition.

Number from Ahmes to Cantor

We might take numbers and counting for granted, but we shouldn't. Our number literacy rests upon centuries of human effort, punctuated here and there by strokes of genius. In his successor and companion volume to Gnomon: From Pharaohs to Fractals, Midhat Gazalé takes us on a Journey from the ancient worlds of the Egyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Mayas, the Greeks, the Hindus, up to the Arab invasion of Europe and the Renaissance. Our guide introduces us to some of the most fascinating and ingenious characters in mathematical history, from Ahmes the Egyptian scribe (whose efforts helped preserve some of the mathematical secrets of the architects of the pyramids) through the modern era of Georg Cantor (the great nineteenth-century inventor of transfinite numbers). As he deftly blends together history, mathematics, and even some computer science in his characteristically compelling style, we discover the fundamental notions underlying the acquisition and recording of "number", and what "number" truly means. Gazalé tackles questions that will stimulate math enthusiasts in a highly accessible and inviting manner. What is a natural number? Are the decimal and binary systems the only legitimate ones? Did the Pythagorean theorem and the discovery of the unspeakable irrationals cost the unfortunate mathematician Hippasus his life? What was the Ladder of Theodorus of Cyrene and how did the ancient Greeks calculate square roots with such extraordinary proficiency? An original generalization of Euler's theorem is offered that explains the pattern of rational number representations. Later on, the field of Continued Fractions paves the way for another original contribution by Gazalé, that of cleavages, which sheds light on the mysterious nature of irrational numbers as it beautifully illustrates Dedekind's famous Schnitt. In the end the author introduces us to the Hilbert Hotel with its infinite number of rooms, guests, and an infinite number of people waiting to check in, where he sets the debate between Aristotle and Cantor about the true nature of infinity. This abundantly illustrated book, remarkable for its coherency and simplicity, will fascinate all those who have an interest in the world of numbers. Number will be indispensable for all those who enjoy mathematical recreations and puzzles, and for those who delight in numeracy.

Frank Auerbach. The Charcoal Heads

Accompanying an exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, Frank Auerbach : The Charcoal Heads presents a remarkable series of hauntingly beautiful largescale drawings by the artist. The catalogue includes a new piece of writing on one of the drawings from critically acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín. This catalogue explores one of Frank Auerbach's most remarkable bodies of work - a series of large-scale portrait heads made in charcoal, produced during his early years as a young artist in postwar London. Auerbach (b. 1931) spent months on each drawing, working and reworking them during numerous sessions with his sitters. This prolonged and vigorous process of creation is evident in the finished drawings, which are richly textured and layered. Auerbach would sometimes even break through the paper and patch it up before carrying on. His heads thus emerge from the darkness of the charcoal with burning vitality, born of an artistic as well as a physical struggle with the medium. The process of repeated creation and destruction, of which these images bear the visible scars, speaks profoundly of their times, as people rebuilt their lives after the ruination and upending of the war. The exhibition will be the first time Auerbach's extraordinary drawings, made in the 1950s and early 1960s, have been brought together as a comprehensive group. They will be shown together with a selection of paintings he made of the same sitters ; for the artist, painting and drawing have always been deeply entwined. The accompanying catalogue - by Deputy Head of The Courtauld Gallery, Barnaby Wright, and with an essay by one of the greatest contemporary voices in the English language, Colm Tóibín - is the first publication to explore in depth this magnificent series. Tóibín spent several hours one afternoon in front of Auerbach's Self-Portrait (1958), which features on the front cover of the book, looking closely and taking notes. His essay is an account of his experience and offers new insights into the work and the nature of self-portaiture.

Critique littéraire

Études anglaises - N°2/2015. The British Contemporary Novel: 2008-2015

Catherine BERNARD Writing Capital, or, John Lanchester's Debt to Realism John Lanchester's fourth novel Capital (2012) offers a scathing, satirical denun- ciation of the excesses of capitalism, commodity fetishism and globalisation. The choral structure of the novel also allows the text to function as a world-novel, embracing as it does the criss-crossing lives of protagonists, each embodying a facet of a ramifed present. Reworking the basic principles of realistic representation, it appropriates the language of materialism to bring it to work paradoxically against the reifcation of affects and identity. With Capital, the "credit crunch" novel claims a different form of accountability that emerges through the very "stuff" of fiction. Vanessa GUIGNERY The Way We Live Now : Jonathan Coe's Re-evaluation of Political Satire This paper examines Jonathan Coe's oeuvre to discuss the evolution of his modes of portraying contemporary Britain. While Coe is well known for his satirical state-of- the-nation novels and for his commitment to political fiction, his recent essays reveal his misgivings about the effectiveness of political satire and Condition-of- England novels in the new millennium. This paper will navigate between Coe's fiction and non-fiction to examine the forms political engagement may take in the contemporary British novel. Jean-Michel GANTEAU Vistas of the Humble : Jon McGregor's Fiction Jon McGregor's novels are characterised by a constant attention to detail and to the ordinary. They address the realities of individual, social and anthropological vul- nerability through narratives whose frail form countermands any attempt at abstraction and totalisation. In this article, I evoke the forms and modalities of vulnerability through the prism of the characters' and narratives' dependence on trauma, of systematic relationality and of attention to singularities. By throwing light on invisibilities and by giving voice to the inarticulate, McGregor writes ethical and political novels and uses the position of the precarious witness to contribute to the creation of some narrative democracy whose purpose, in Guillaume Le Blanc's terms, is to enlarge our sense of the common. Peter CHILDS Food Chain : Predatory Links in the Novels of David Mitchell Humans are for David Mitchell predatory animals, whatever their civilized com- plexity. His novels contain numerous examples of individuals and groups who would oppress others in the name of logic, desire, morality, technology, survival or sheer force of will. That people prey on animals, resources and other human beings is only one dimension to Mitchell's fictional world but it is consistent and stark, from the cannibals that appear in Cloud Atlas and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet through the warring factions in number9dream to the more fantasti- cal parasitic predators of Ghostwritten and The Bone Clocks. In this essay, I review aspects to this theme while analysing Mitchell's fictional world, which increasingly seems to be governed by interlinkages not only within narratives but metaleptically across them. Marc POREE "What if ?" : The Speculative Turn of Will Self's Fiction "Et si ?" "What if ?" Never wary of unveiling the fantastical conceits which he is wont to proceed from, Will Self is (over)fond of speculation. A speculation that is meta- physical in kind, related to that implemented by the poets of the first half of the seventeeenth century (vilified by Johnson before being rehabilitated by T. S. Eliot). A speculation, the cerebral nature of which is found to be more than compatible with the processes of incorporation and digestion, at the hands of the novel, of all that is allegedly foreign to it (the sciences, thought). A speculation, lastly, bent on restoring a mechanism of "unified sensibility" which Self knows to be anachronis- tic, given the average reader's pursuits, but which offers a fresh take on the neces- sary difficulty of art. Camille MANFREDI Tales from the Pigeon-Hole : James Kelman's Migrant Voices This article offers to dwell on James Kelman's concerns with liminality and cultural identity by outlining the dynamics of displacement, dislocation and relocation in his recent novels You Have to be Careful in the Land of the Free (2004), Kieron Smith, Boy (2008) and Mo Said She Was Quirky (2012). While paying attention to Kelman's interest in the potential for subversion of the in-between, the article anal- yses the narrators' strategies of self-preservation and self-transformation with a view to better understand Kelman's own perception of the predicament of the contemporary Scottish writer in the postcolonial and global contexts. Christian GUTLEBEN Whither Postmodernism ? Four Tentative Neo-Victorian Answers This paper sets out to examine in what ways recent neo-Victorian fiction illustrates twenty-first-century fiction's quest for new novelistic possibilities. On the basis of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas (2004), Andrea Levy's The Long Song (2010), Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White (2002) and Rosie Garland's The Palace of Curiosities (2013), it will be argued that neo-Victorianism broadens the scope of postmodernism by conceiving a cosmopoetics in which a referential and an aesthetic globalisation are combined, by imagining alternative forms of fictional historiography, by challenging various forms of orthodoxy and by questioning the limits of the human. Although it suggests evolutions and variations in relation to late twentieth-century historiographic metafiction, the novel of the new millennium nevertheless cannot be said to forsake postmodernism.

Olive oil

Olive oil is good for preparing food and increases the natural flavors of ingredients without modifying their taste. The olive tree has been the symbol of eternal peace for thousands of years. One of my ancestors, a senior civil servant in the Spanish government, used to recount that culture and agriculture are the two best ways of making the most of one's time and money. Today, the seventh generation of our family of olive farmers still is in firm belief of the same ethos. Olive oil holds the heart and soul of Mediterranean culture, and we have used all of our passion and knowledge to strive to reach perfection, while at the same time respecting nature, and mixing traditions with avant-garde techniques. In today's ever-globalized society, where cultures meet and mix, olive oil, an eons-long symbol of the Mediterranean, finds itself on tables from Scandinavia to Australia to Japan. Basically, it is nothing more than the delicate and subtle juice of the olive. At the house of Nunez de Prado - ever conscious of maintaining quality - we harvest all of our olives by hand including those having fallen to the ground. Only hours later is the crop carried to the mill where the fruit is broken up by granite rolls and pressed. The precious liquid extracted from the produce is decanted naturally to isolate that minute quantity of vegetal deliciousness that is the oil. Though appearing simple, this extraction process, especially for a high quality oil, is nearly as complex as the production of a quality château wine, the term used in Spanish to describe olive oils as well.

LiFang. Edition bilingue français-anglais

Born in China in 1968 and living in France since 2001, Li Fang capture in her paintings the oscillations of the contemporary world. Although her work is figurative, her technique, which uses large flat areas of colour like blocks sculpted from pictorial matter, clearly forges a link with abstraction. This stylistic unity unfolds in a variety of series that reflect her life and our times : portraits of loved ones, scenes of swimming, anonymous urban crowds, resistance to Chinese censorship, the tragedy of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea... Despite being current or seemingly simple, her themes echo universal feelings : the loneliness of modern society, the choice of exile, the tenderness of childhood, the power of water or the vitality of bodies in nature. Whether light or profound, joyful or tragic, Li Fang's work is timeless and open-ended, and this first monograph reveals its full richness.

Hockney's Eye. The Art and Technology of Depiction

David Hockney is the best known and most widely admired painter in the world. This vibrant catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at the The Fitzwilliam Museum and the Heong Gallery in Cambridge, as well as the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands. Throughout his long career, David Hockney has insistently explored diverse ways of depicting the visible world. He has scrutinised the methods of the old masters, and explored radical departures from their cherished assumptions The exhibition and accompanying book are the first to focus on this central theme in his art. "Western art" from the Renaissance until at least the late 19th century has been dominated by the depiction of nature. Was this to be accomplished by direct looking (called "eyeballing" by Hockney) or with the assistance of optical theory and devices, such as cameras ? Hockney has experimented with the full range of existing strategies, overtly using perspective in some of his classic pictures and rigorously investigating optical aids for the imitation of nature, including the camera obscura and camera lucida. Yet he has come to reject the photograph as the definitive image of what we see. Along the way, he has identified a "camera culture'' in European painting from 1400, arguing very controversially that the supreme naturalism of painters like Jan van Eyck are the product of optical devices. His book, Secret Knowledge (2001), with its majestic panorama of paintings over the course of five centuries, claims that art historians have missed the central aspect of painters' practice. The "Hockney thesis" has been received more favourably outside the professional world of art history than in it. His own artistic practice has been in vigorous dialogue with his radical thesis, and he has progressively demonstrated new and dynamic ways of characterising the visual world without perspective and other conventional techniques. This quest results a series of joyous challenges to our ways of seeing in the major exhibition in Cambridge at the Fitzwilliam Museum and in the Heong Gallery (Downing College). It will look at the whole span of Hockney's varied career and at the nature of the optical devices he has tested. His vision will be explored in the setting of traditional masterpieces of naturalistic observation, and in the context of modern sciences and technologies of seeing. The first section of the book looks at his thrilling experiments in seeing and representing in broad historical and contemporary contexts. This is followed by discussions of pre-photographic devices for capturing the appearances of things by optical means. The third section includes essays on Hockney's experiments from the perspectives of neuroscience and computer vision. In short, it reveals in a new way the working of Hockney's unique eye.

Like Man, Like Woman

Modern scholarship often discusses Roman women in terms of their difference from their male counterparts, frequently defining them as ‘other'. This book shows how Roman male writers at the turn of the first century actually described women as not so different from men : the same qualities and abilities pertaining to the domains of parenthood, intellect and morals are ascribed by writers to women as well as to men. There are two voices, however : a traditional, ideal voice and an individual, realistic voice. This creates a duality of representations of women, which recurs across literary genres and reflects a duality of mentality. How can we interpret the paradoxical information about Roman women given by the male-authored texts ? How does this duality of mentality inform us about gender roles and gender hierarchy ? This work analyses well-known, as well as overlooked, passages from the writings of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Quintilian, Statius, Martial and Juvenal and sheds new light on Roman views of women and their abilities, on the notions of private and public and on conjugal relationships. In the process, the famous sixth satire of Juvenal is revisited and its topic reassessed, providing further insights into the complex issues of gender roles, marriage and emotions. By contrasting representations of women across a broad spectrum of literary genres, this book provides consistent findings that have wide significance for the study of Latin literature and the social history of the late first and early second centuries.

Friendship and Love in the Middle English Metrical Romances

"Friendship and Love in the Middle English Metrical Romances" groups together a representative cross-section of the genre, according to variants of love relationships, and to ideas of friendship. The horizontal and the vertical structure of the relatonship are tripartite. The horizontal stages are attraction, separation-testing-trial, and reunion, the vertical spheres are the personal, social/political, and religious. All relationships fail into two types, the restorative-concordant and the innovative-discordant. These are defined by the relative position of the partners in the social-political sphere of their relationship. The groups of relationship are defined by the initially more active partner : forward heroine, fairy mistress, forward hero, mutual love, married love ; friendship, lords and retainers. Surveys of the Insular understanding of courtly love, and of Caxton's prose romances, complement the findings.

Continuous Selections for Metric Projections and Interpolating Subspaces

The existence of continuous selections for metric projections is the theoretical foundation of the existence of stable algorithms for computing best approximation elements. In this monograph we will give various intrinsic characterizations of subspaces of C o(T) which ensure the existence of continuous metric selections. Since the Chebyshev approximation is a special case of semi-infinite optimization, we hope that our study will give some insight to stability problems in semi-infinite optimization as well as parametric optimizations.

Drawn to Life. Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum

This beautifully illustrated catalogue presents a selection of exceptional seventeenth-century Dutch drawings from the Peck Collection in the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Featuring many previously unpublished and rarely exhibited works, the catalogue brings together examples by some of the best-known artists of the era such as Rembrandt, Jacques de Gheyn II, Samuel van Hoogstraten, and Frans van Mieris. The collection was donated to the museum in 2017 by the late Drs. Sheldon and Leena Peck. The transformative gift is comprised of over 130 largely seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch and Flemish drawings, establishing the Ackland as one of a handful of university art museums in the United States where northern European drawings can be studied in depth. Drawn to Life presents around 70 works from this exceptional and diverse group of drawings amassed by the Pecks over four decades. Featuring new research and fresh insights into seventeenth-century drawing practice, the catalogue and accompanying exhibition celebrates the creativity and technical skills of Dutch artists who explored the beauty of the natural world and the multifaceted aspects of humanity. The catalogue features a broad selection of scenes of everyday life, landscapes, biblical and historical scenes, portraits, and preparatory studies, forming a dynamic and representative group of Dutch drawings made by some of the most outstanding artists of the period, including Abraham Bloemaert, Jacob van Ruisdael, Esaias van de Velde, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, Pieter Molijn, Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade, Ferdinand Bol, Nicolaes Maes, Jan Lievens, Gerard ter Borch, Adriaen van de Velde, Nicolaes Berchem, and Cornelis Dusart. Key sheets of remarkable quality by lesserknown artists such as Guillam Dubois, Herman Naiwincx, Willem Romeyn, and Jacob van der Ulft, also comprise a core strength of the collection, and serve as a testament to the visual acuity of the Pecks as collectors. At the heart of the Peck Collection are several sheets by Rembrandt, including the sublime Noli me Tangere ; a beautifully rendered late landscape, Canal and Boats with a Distant View of Amsterdam ; and the superbly charming Studies of Women and Children, which was the last of Rembrandt's seventeen known drawings with an inscription in his own hand to reach a public collection. Meticulously researched and written by Robert Fucci, Ph. D. , Drawn to Life introduces both scholars and drawings enthusiasts to the depth and beauty of the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum.

Leviticus

Whereas many books in this field deal with individual aspects or texts of the study of family laws, Leviticus : The Priestly Laws and Prohibitions from the Perspective of Ancient Near East and Africa examines extensively biblical texts, ancient Near Eastern text, and oral traditions from Africa. Thus, three different cultures converge : the world of the Hebrew Bible, the world of the ancient Near East, and the world of Africa. This volume examines in detail the history of the development of ancient laws in general and family laws in particular, especially the laws relating to marriages between close relatives. Furthermore, Johnson M. Kimuhu looks at prohibitions and taboos in Africa and the problems they pose with regard to the interpretation and translation of difficult biblical concepts into African languages. In that sense, Kimuhu provides an example of how to contextualize or integrate African traditions into the study of biblical Hebrew, and he also offers insights into the current debate on the study of kinship from the point of view of social/cultural anthropology and the Hebrew Bible legal system. Teachers, students, and researchers in biblical studies, ancient Near Eastern studies, African traditions, and social/cultural anthropology will find this book helpful in their quest to understand family laws, prohibitions, and taboos.

Stars and Stellar Evolution

The diverse forms that stars assume in the course of their lives can all be derives from the initial conditions : the mass and the original chemical composition. In this textbook the basic concepts of stellar structure and the main roads of stellar evolution are described. First, the observable parameters are presented, which are based on the radiation emerging from a stellar atmosphere. Then the bascphysics is described, such as the physics of gases, radiation transport, and nuclear processes, followed by essential aspects of modelling the structure of stars. After a chapter on star formation, the various steps in the evolution of stars are presented. This leads us to brown dwarfs, to the way of star changes into the red-giant state and numerous other stages of evolution and ultimately to the stellar ashes such as white dwarfs, supernovae and neutron stars. Stellar winds, stellar rotation and convection all influence the way a star evolves. The evolution of binary stars is included by using several canonical examples in which interactive processes lead to X-Ray binaries and supernovae of type la. Finally, the consequence of the study of stellar evolution are tied to observed mass ans luminosity functions and to the overall evolution of matter in the universe.

Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia

Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

The efficiency of English language teaching in smaller countries: Denmark

The study is part of a wider comparative description of basic English language teaching in some of the smaller European countries, namely Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden. This first survey offers a discussion of the main issues in English language teaching in Denmark based entirely on Danish sources and on observations in various schools. Denmark is an interesting case of successful English language teaching at school, mainly in mixed-ability classes, with a high degree of support via private TV viewing in a climate of favourable attitudes toward Britain and the U.S.A. The discussion is broadened by looking at teacher education, the role of English outside school and the influence of the English language on Danish.
