Numerical Methods for Wave equation in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. With 93 illustrations

This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations governing wave-like and weakly dissipative flows. The focus of the book is on fundamental methods and standard fluid dynamical problems such as tracer transport, the shallow-water equations, and the Euler equations. The emphasis is on methods appropriate for applications in atmospheric and oceanic science, but these same methods are also well suited for the simulation of wave-like flows in many other scientific and engineering disciplines. The text discusses finite-difference, spectral, finite-element, and finite-volume methods. Also included are additional chapters on semi-Lagrangian schemes, nonreflecting boundary conditions, and methods for the efficient solution of problems that include physically insignificant rapidly propagating waves. Throughout the book the author has followed a middle course between the theorem-proof formalism of a pure mathematics text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. Although there are no formal proofs, the essential characteristics of the various schemes are mathematically derived in a style familiar to physical scientists. Numerical examples illustrating the theoretically derived properties of the various methods are presented throughout the book to establish a concrete link between theory and practice. Both theoretical and applied problems are provided at the end of each chapter. Numerical Methods for Wave Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics will be useful as a senior undergraduate and graduate text, and as a reference for those teaching or using numerical methods, particularly for those concentrating on fluid dynamics.

Thinking about Physics

Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood. The Medieval Body

While the early Middle Ages reserved representations of suffering bodies to the margins of their world, the later Middle Ages displayed wounded bodies in the most central spaces of public life. The crucified body of Christ and the wounded bodies of saints assumed important positions as they were displayed on altars, in processions, and on the exteriors of churches. The Medieval Body tells a unique story about the human form as both a physical entity and a recognizable metaphor. Modern relationship researchers have revealed that scripts concerning pair bonding rituals are actually constituted in a manner so as to leave little to chance when romantic attachments are formed, intensify, and sometimes dissolve. In this introductory text, the authors discuss the basis of relationship scripts, emotions, imagery, and physiology of relationships including romance, friendship, work associates, mentors, and Facebook friends. They argue that people's expectations for relational development influence their communication, faith, and commitment in relationships. Misconstruing sexual or flirtatious intent, for example, is derived from having different scripts about attraction. The book also discusses abusive relationships including characteristics of abusers, stalking, and verbal and physical aggression. Designed for classes in communication and relationships, interpersonal communication, intrapersonal communication, and communication and cognition, as well as across disciplines in psychology, sociology, family studies, and social work, this text provides a comprehensive overview of how scripts and communication are used in relationships. Thermodynamique et cinetiques de la cristallisation des polymeres (collection science et ingenierie

Ce livre présente les modèles théoriques qui permettent d'expliquer le développement de la cristallinité et des morphologies cristallines dans les polymères. Ainsi sont d'abord présentés le formalisme thermodynamique adéquat, la théorie classique de la germination et son application aux polymères, puis une théorie de la croissance adaptée aux spécificités des cristaux polymères. La cristallisation est également appréhendée de façon globale en décrivant l'évolution temporelle de la transformation du polymère liquide en polymère semi-cristallin. Les théories de cinétique globale de cristallisation sont détaillées et appliquées à des problèmes où la température est le paramètre prépondérant, puis à la modélisation de la cristallisation dans un film mince, avec éventuellement une cristallisation additionnelle de surface (transcristallinité). Nous montrons enfin la généralité du phénomène de cristallisation sphérolitique et présentons les théories qui ont essayé d'en proposer une modélisation "universelle" . L'ouvrage a été rédigé dans un esprit Science des Matériaux, certains chapitres s'appliquant à tout type de matériau. En particulier, les cinétiques globales de cristallisation sont présentées de façon détaillée et rigoureuse.
