Comment être à la fois celle qui est professeure, directrice de recherche à l'université Columbia de New York et celle qui enseigne dans les écoles rurales en Inde, écoles qu'elle a fondées pour les enfants déshérités ? Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak ne prétend pas se mettre " à la place " ; depuis sa place, avec du recul tout en restant dans une " walking distance " , une distance humaine, franchissable, avec sa différence, ses expériences propres, elle se joint. Reading Life / Writing Fiction
Studies of the American novel of the 20s and 30s have tended to concentrate either on works by men (Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck), or on those written in the tradition of experimental modernism (Stein, Faulkner, Djuna Barnes). Based on the conviction that women writers of the period fictionalized their own private and public experiences and concerns, the present study offers an analytical introduction to some hundred novels by more than thirty writers. Its aim is to recover a significant corpus of forgotten or ignored texts, which will make a reconsideration of the centers of interest of American modernism unavoidable.

The Policies and Politics of Pope Pius XII
The Policies and Politics of Pope Pius XII delves into the diplomacy of the most controversial pope of the twentieth century : Pius XII (pontificate, 1939-1958), "Advocate of Appeasement" to some and "Apostle of Peace" to others. Disagreement prevails on his quest for peace, recourse to impartiality during the Second World War, and relative public silence during the Holocaust. His abandonment of impartiality to play a prominent role in the Cold War has contributed to the charges and counter-charges leading to what has been deemed the "Pius War." Unfortunately, a good deal of the literature published by the defenders and denigrators of this papal diplomacy has shed more heat than light. In this book, Frank J. Coppa, who has written on numerous controversial figures including Pius IX (pontificate,1846-1878), seeks to objectively explore the origins and rationale of Pius XII's diplomacy during the war, the Nazi genocide, and its aftermath.

"On liberty" by John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), one of the most versatile thinkers of the nineteenth century, wrote on the newly emerging sciences of economics, politics and sociology. His Principles of Political Economy (1848) ran to many editions and is still read today, while his book on Utilitarianism (1863) is better known than the writings of Jeremy Bentham. On Liberty (1859) was written at a time when the Industrial Revolution, the rise of a sizeable middle class and its social influence, the growing democratisation of British politics raised questions about the place of individuals and the dangers of this new mass society. Mill placed much faith in this passionate and cogently argued plea for individual freedom, writing in his Autobiography : The liberty is likely to survive longer than anything else I have written... . The future was to prove him right, and his defence of freedom of thought and speech, of individuality and originality, later used to criticise the various instances totalitarianism in the twentieth century, is still relevant these days.

Morality and Politics in Nigeria
Before the Nigerian civil war, and even after the war till 1982, Nigeria was regarded as a wealthy nation in comparison with other African countries. However, for the past 30 years, struggle for power has resulted in political instability, moral degeneracy and under-development. The economy of the country has collapsed and millions of Nigerians are now enveloped in poverty, hunger, disease, ignorance, unemployment etc. The root cause of this unhealthy situation for the country is corruption and moral degradation. The only way out of the Nigerian ugly situation seems to be the integration of morality in Nigerian politics. This research work therefore aims at suggesting avenues of restoring man's original dignity within a corrupt and unjust social and political setting in Nigeria.

A multitude of Sins. Richard Ford
A sequel to Rock Springs and Women with Men, the collection of short stories entitled A Multitude of Sins was published in 2001 and immediately achieved worldwide recognition. If this series of ten short stories seems to feature adultery, it would be a major mistake to believe that the stories can be reduced to what is actually a side issue or a pretext to something else, sometimes of much greater importance. As often with great writers, Richard Ford tackles several other topics along with the sin of unfaithfulness which is a base camp from which to go further up into the knowledge of human deficiency, lack and want. Pondering these sins, Richard Ford lays them all bare while often unveiling the issue of the story right from the beginning, instead of cautiously preserving it as a last chance literary trick to pull it off at the fast moment. Showing insight through observation, his writing is deceptive in as much as it seems natural and easygoing when it requires close analysis and several successive readings to yield up its literary and humane secrets. The comparison some critics have made to Chekhov is not overblown and Agregation students, certainly among the most perceptive readers in the world, should naturally enjoy both reading and studying A Multitude of Sins, pleasure and scholarship being complementary, not antagonistic. The exclusive interview of Richard Ford at the end of the book will certainly be appreciated by Agregation students, who will thus be able to finish off their knowledge of Ford's works.

Glasgow Urban Writing and Postmodernism
Alasdair Gray is one of the most innovative and imaginative writers to have appeared on the Scottish literary scene for many years. Gray radically challenges the vision of Glasgow and Scotland as defined by the traditional Glasgow novel. This study first looks back into the past of Glasgow writing to locate some specific novelistic models which Gray echoes in his fiction. The main part of the study then illustrates that Gray's literary attitude of looking beyond Glasgow (or Scotland) is much more helpful in "imagining Glasgow" than to follow the established and trodden paths of Scottish urban writing. In this sense, Gray proves that the narrative techniques characteristic of postmodernist writing are not only helpful in expressing the often quoted Scottish experience of fragmentation, but also in overcoming the artistic stalemate of the Glasgow novel.

The Moment
Written representations of momentary phenomena such as the Fall, the kairos, epiphany, the nunc stans, the sublime, dialectical and historical moments of change and moments of deferral are always doomed to fail. However, representational failures at writing have always been turned into a performative success : more writing. The author's reading of the various textualizations of the moment is not historical, but genealogical (Foucault) and not typological, but economical (Derrida); it reveals the moment as an inevitable trope : the deconstruction of a representational moment in a given text reinscribes this moment as the text's performative momentum. This ever shifting meaning of the moment has been followed through literary and philosophical texts from Plato to Beckett.

Style and Rhetoric in Bertrand Russels's Work
A thorough examination of Bertrand Russell's language is the object of this study. Since this is the first major analysis of his writing style, examples taken from a wide spectrum of his writings are examined. Structurally the investigation begins by treating individual vocabulary and then moves on to larger structural units, covering such areas as figurative language and description. The final chapter deals with his rhetoric, discussing his methods of persuasion and the logic of his arguments. This careful analysis of his writings is significant in that it sheds new light on interesting aspects of Russell's character.

Readings From Chinese Writers (1949-1986) presents a selection of Chinese literary works written after the establishment of the People's Republic of China. This book can be used as supplementary reading for teaching Chinese literature in colleges and universities abroad, or as self-teaching material for those students of Chinese literature with some mastery of Chinese. The book includes masterpieces of the main writers of each historical period. Taking into account differences in the level of the reader's Chinese, the works selected are intended to be easily comprehensible. A biographical sketch of each author is provided. Each piece is accompanied by a brief introduction and analysis. To facilitate teaching and reading, difficult words and sentences, dialectal expressions, and idioms are accompanied by pinyin, as well as by English and French translations and by necessary explanations.

Jorge Semprún
Jorge Semprún is a leading writer from the first generation of Spanish Civil War exiles, yet studies of his work have often focused solely on his literary testimony to the concentration camps and his political activities. Although Semprún's work derives from his incarceration in Buchenwald and his expulsion from the Spanish Communist Party in 1964, limiting the discussion of his works to the autobiographical details or to the realm of Holocaust studies is reductive. The responses by many influential writers to his recent death highlight that the significance of Semprún's work goes beyond the testimony of historical events. His self-identification as a Spanish exile has often been neglected and there is no comprehensive study of his works available in English. This book provides a global view of his oeuvre and extends literary analysis to texts that have received little critical attention. The author investigates the role played by memory in some of Semprún's works, drawing on current debates in the field of memory studies. A detailed analysis of these works allows related concepts, such as exile and nostalgia, the Holocaust, the interplay between memory and writing, politics and collective memory, and postmemory and identity, to be examined and discussed.

If married in church, medieval women vowed before God and their husbands to be ‘bonoure and buxum', that is, meek and obedient in bed and at table. This book is a study of wives in a variety of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century romance, fabliaux, cycle drama, life-writing, lyrics and hagiography. The volume examines key moments that defined life as a married woman : her eligibility to become a wife, the wedding ceremony, her conjugal rights and duties, childbirth and her contribution to the family economy. The book explores the way in which the literary representation of wives is in dialogue with discourses that strove to construct and regulate the role of ‘wife'; canon and secular law, marriage liturgy, medical treatises on the female body, sermons, manuals of spiritual instruction, biblical paradigms, conduct books and misogamous writings. Moreover, the volume examines the possibilities for subversion of these paradigms by listening to literary wives speak both within and against these discourses. Real women's attitudes, and strategies of subversion, are woven into the volume throughout, as recorded in church and manorial court records, in their wills and in their writing.

The "Ambazonian" Nightmare tells the story of how the now almost six years of instability started in the two English speaking regions of the Republic of Cameroon. The swiftly consolidating insecurity dilemma holds within two contradictory historical mistakes : the enforcement of the English speaking Cameroon's populations resentment of specificity and marginality and the paradoxical laxism of Cameroon's national security and defence system. Le rail est historiquement équivoque, ayant permis aussi bien le meilleur que le pire de nos aventures (inter) nationales. Nous lui devons le développement de la révolution industrielle, la propagation de certains idéaux révolutionnaires et démocratiques, le moyen de fuir la misère ou la guerre, comme on l'a encore vu tout au début du conflit qui oppose la Russie à l'Ukraine, avec ces trains dans lesquels des Ukrainiens, surtout femmes et enfants, essayaient de monter pour se mettre à l'abri et rejoindre la Pologne. La même Pologne justement où, tout comme en Italie, en France et ailleurs, de bien sinistres trains de la mort concouraient logistiquement à la " solution finale " lors de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.

Au début du XIXe?siècle, le célèbre poète romantique Alphonse de Lamartine exprima ce que l'Homme, "?toujours poussé vers de nouveaux rivages?" et "?emporté sans retour?" ressent face à la fuite du temps. Hervé Verdon est né à Bruxelles, en 1963. Depuis 1988, il occupe la fonction d'ingénieur dans le secteur aérospatial. Il a participé à de nombreux projets internationaux, qui l'ont conduit à voyager non seulement dans plusieurs pays européens, dont la France, les Pays Bas et l'Italie, mais également en Russie, aux Etats-Unis et en Guyane. Vers de nouveaux rivages est son second ouvrage.

Known primarily for the novel, Aus guter Familie, Gabriele Reuter has not yet been accorded the attention she deserves for her contribution to German literature in general and women's writing in particular. The precisely observed portraits of women in the novels discussed in this volume allow us to experience the complex interplay of societal norms and individual needs which shape feminine existence. Among the themes treated are misguided motherhood, the virtue of the unwed mother, the conflict between the will to be and the need to love and be loved, woman's role in the political sphere and a comparison of womanhood in two generations. One of the enduring pleasures of reading Reuter is the rich variety of female characters from the early part of the twentieth century.

La différence francophone. De Jean de Léry à Patrick Chamoiseau
Parce qu'ils figent et généralisent des dynamiques complexes situées dans le temps et l'espace, mais également parce qu'ils sont instables, sujets aux fluctuations budgétaires des institutions d'enseignement supérieur et du marché du travail, les labels disciplinaires sont des cibles faciles de la critique. La division des études francophones ne fait pas exception. Une idée simple sous-tend ce livre selon laquelle la division des études francophones ne se laisse pas définir par l'ouverture de nouveaux chapitres dans l'histoire d'une littérature nationale, ni se réduire à la multiplication de subdivisions géographiques et d'appendices postcoloniaux dans les départements de lettres. Le travail de la différence francophone nous force à penser le sens d'une recherche en étude littéraires à partir de sa reprogrammation interdisciplinaire au sein de ce que Bill Readings appelait dans les années 1990 l'Université posthistorique. Du récit de voyage de Jean de Léry, aux fantaisies archéologiques de Patrick Chamoiseau, en passant par la réflexion de Michel de Certeau et Gayatri Spivak sur les sciences historiques, une série d'études de cas abordent la remise en question d'un projet d'histoire littéraire fondée sur la recherche d'un effet de coïncidence identitaire entre langue et territoire, corpus et collectivité, souveraineté et élection spirituelle.

Europe's Role in a South African Methodology
This work consists of essays on the so-called Middle Ages, seen from two perspectives. Writing from a sideline perspective, as opposed to the perspectives of historically mainstream theologies, in the first part of the book the author proposes a method for reading religious political texts with European philosophical insights but with a relevance for South Africa. This is done by comparing so-called Medieval texts with South African texts and situations within the demands of liberation, contextualisation, and communalism.In the second part of the book, from a female perspective, the author reevaluates the post-Biblical history of Christianity, criticising the terms "Patristics" and "Middle Ages". A South African women's theology is then offered as the outcome of the sideline perspective on the Bible, history and theology discussed in this book.
