Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons

The Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons is the result of an initiative which forges a radically new path for promoting transcultural understanding by studying culture-bound keywords. The stimulating idea is to create and address with intention that which is generally held to be by all means avoided : namely, misunderstandings. The experiment starts with a level of communication that is not political per se but cultural. Cultures have no rigid borders like nation-states. They are more dynamic and meandering, open to influence, and translatable. Like cultures themselves, keywords are saturated with history, long-term experience, values, and collective emotions. They carry a load of tacit knowledge and implicit axioms that have the advantage of not having to be unpacked, explained, or spelled out. Working through various semantic layers of keywords on both sides helps to create a more transparent language for transcultural dialogue. The creation of such a language is the effect of producing, exchanging, and working through misunderstandings on both sides. Within the framework of transcultural dialogue, misunderstandings turn out to be an innovative tool for mutual learning by seeing oneself through the eyes of the other. It is high time for researchers in various parts of the world to join forces and translate basic concepts from one language and culture into another. Every translation is a transformation, marking similarities and differences which can lead to an uncovering of new ideas, values, and cultural practices. This unconventional dialogue is a great source of inspiration because it works through hardened assumptions and misrepresentations, unsettles schematic thinking, and leads to unexpected insights and new points of contact. Synthesis of Inorganic Materials

The preparation process of inorganic materials is one of the most important aspects of material science. Not only the chemical composition of a particular material plays a crucial role for many applications but also its structure. The proper choice of the chemical precursors and the preparation technique to obtain a material with the desired chemical and physical properties is a challenge for both material scientists and inorganic chemists. This is the first book to give a comprehensive overview of the current methods for chemical synthesis of inorganic materials. The spectrum ranges from solid state reactions, CVD, reactions of aqueous systems, preparation and modification of inorganic polymers to the synthesis of tailored porous materials. With examples of selected technically applied materials for each method the general principles and requirements as well as the material properties and application of the resulting products are discussed. Numerous tables with further examples help to assess the scope and limitation of the various methods and to choose a suitable synthesis for a given problem. First and foremost directed to students in chemistry, material sciences and physics this book will also bc appreciated by advanced scientists in these fields as a valuable reference book for inorganic synthesis.

The Dictionary of Acronyms and Abbreviations in Applied Linguistics and Language Learning

This dictionary is two things in one : an alphabetical compilation of acronyms and abbreviations together with their full forms and an inverted index, which gives the user thematic access to the information contained in the data base. The more than 13.000 entries are an attempt to lighten the burden of language teachers and applied linguists, translators and interpreters, librarians and administrators, whose job it is to mediate in and between language communities in daily or intermittent contact with the scourge of acronyms and abbreviations. A range of additional features distinguishes this dictionary from its competitors : More than 1200 addresses (if the acronym stands for an organization/institution); more than 3000 bibliographic references to the concepts behind the short forms ; ample crossreferencing to related entries ; a listing of new word coinages on the basis of acronyms.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction

In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship. McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice. Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative. "Professors McClellan and Dorn have written a survey that does not present the historical development of science simply as a Western phenomenon but as the result of wide-ranging human curiosity about nature and attempts to harness its powers in order to serve human needs. This is an impressive amount of material to organize in a single textbook." - Paula Findlen, Stanford University

ARCHIMEDES. What Did He Do Besides Cry Eureka?

THIS BOOK HAS ONLY ONE PURPOSE: To make the discoveries of Archimedes easily accessible to a wide audience, from anyone with a background in high school algebra to a busy practicing mathematician. Many people have heard two things about Archimedes: He was the greatest mathematician of antiquity and he ran naked from his bath crying, "Eureka, eureka!" Few of us, layperson or mathematician, are familiar with the accomplishments on which his reputation rests. This book describes in detail those astonishing accomplishments: how he developed the theory of the lever and the center of gravity; how he used the center of gravity to study whether a floating object would tip over; how he summed a geometric series and the squares; and how he found the volume and surface area of a sphere. His ability to do so much with the few tools at his disposal is astonishing. He was like a one-person Institute for Advanced Study, making fundamental discoveries in the fields of geometry, mechanics and hydrostatics. The exposition is leisurely and supported by a brief life of Archimedes and some 120 illustrations. Any reader who is aware that the graph of y = x2 is a parabola can follow all the reasoning. Although the book uses only high school mathematics, professional mathematicians will find much here of interest as well.

German Elements in the Fiction of George Eliot, Gissing, and Meredith

George Eliot, Gissing and Meredith are the nineteenth-century British novelists who, in their fiction, made the most significant and substantial use of German material. The function of this material is twofold, relating both to the life presented and to the presentation. An elucidation of the German references adds not only to a fuller understandig of the individual novels, but also of the author's theory and practice of fiction, and of one of the experimental tendencies in the "wide" tradition of the English novel.

Nietzsche and the End of Freedom

Nietzsche's writing is not some game of 'freeplay' and terms like 'intertextuality' are useless in discussing its influence. This study takes Nietzsche, then Kafka's Trial, Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, Heinrich Mann's Man of Straw, Rilke's Malte Laurids Brigge and Musil's Törless. It argues that Nietzsche mediates and modernises the dilemmas of Romanticism and that a properly differentiated account of his literary reception can illuminate the dynamics of German culture on the eve of the Great War.

Lessons in Beauty

Lessons in Beauty explores the connections between art and education, and, more specifically, the links among the art of painting, the training of artists and the education of adults. From a historical point of view, five kinds of relationships are examined in this volume. In each case, one can speak of 'lessons in beauty', be it the transmission of moral messages through visual means, the professional training of painters, the aesthetic edification of the working class, the educational activities of museums or the attempts to indoctrinate adults in matters of art. Growing attention to these and similar topics can be explained by an increasing interest in the aesthetic element within contemporary postmodern society. In each essay, therefore, an association is made with present-day developments and ideas.

Clashing Cultures. Annang Not(with)standing Christianity – An Ethnography

Clashing Cultures is an anthropological study of the Annang, an ethnic people of Southern Nigeria. The book provides a succinct historical and ethnographic description of the impacts of various cultural and religious influences upon the Annang people and the transformations that have taken place as a result. The consideration of Christianity's influence on the Annang is part of the broader historical and anthropological picture. Although it is an academic work, Clashing Cultures is also a living text. It reflects the evolving culture of the Annang regarding issues such as marriage, male/female roles and supernatural beliefs. The book deals with ritual as a practice that produces meaning, by means of images and metaphors in an unfolding drama. It looks at how the Annang extract meaning from themselves, their bodies, their gestures, their actions in social, spatial and historical contexts. The book creates a "time-oriented anthropology" in which local processes are mirrored in the context of larger ones.

Read Ancient African scripts from any current African language. Volume 2

The son of Douaouf, the brilliant, scribe of the early XIIth Dynasty Xty " Khety " said this : "The man continues to subsist after reaching the haven of death and his actions are beside him in a heap. " If regression is the main cause of the alarming situation of Africa and its tails the perceptibles consequences at all levels, the solution to this problem is eminently political. It inevitably involves the constitution of a pan-African State. For men, there is no unity without memory of the past. In fact, the construction of a federal state inevitably involves the restoration of African historical consciousness. There is no national and federal identity without a common language. The unification of Africa will only be possible if it takes the measure of its linguistic unification issue. To a lesser extent but like Cheikh Anta Diop in his book titled the Cultural Unity, I was animated throughout this heuristic by the idea that only the true knowledge of the past can maintain the consciousness and the feeling of a historical continuity essential to the consolidation of a nation for the purpose of building a multinational state in line with its past. Like Cheikh Anta Diop, I build my sureness on the legitimate idea that a people who lost a significant part of their historical memory must engage in the investigation of their past in every possible way. This investigation can take the contours of a reconnection with its past through so-called old languages. But a people can not live only with by merely repeating of what others tell them about themselves. The investigation through its linguistic past allows especially a direct knowledge of oneself. In addition to the fact that this knowledge simply highlights its weaknesses, it allows also to become aware by an introspective and therefore reflective of its real abilities and strengths. It structures being and the consciousness of being to resist any form of servile and degrading ideology. This quest for the past, not founded on blind passion but objectivity, nourishes a healthy ambition for a real universalism. To know one's past is already to project one's future. To know one's past is to give oneself the capacity to be able to bring to others in a perspective of giving and receiving. To know one's past is to refuse intellectual guardianship and wait-and-seeism. To know one's past is to be reborn.

Autobiography: Self Into Form

"The autobiographical impulse" dominated German-language literature of the 1970's, finding its expression in autobiographies of crisis, women's coming-to-consciousness, and disrupted childhoods. This study examines the historical, sociological, political and literary-historical context for this phenomenon, and in so doing engages the critical international discussion of autobiography as a changing genre. Detailed analyses of works by Ingeborg Bachmann, Elisabeth Plessen, Christa Wolf and Peter Handke suggest new critical approaches to autobiographical form. The author provides an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources, as well as a chronological table of autobiographical works of the decade.

Radiation chemistry. From basics to applications in material and life sciences

This book gives a progress report on the many and original contributions of radiation chemistry to the fundamental knowledge of the vast domain of chemical reactions and its applications. Radiation chemistry techniques indeed make it possible to elucidate detailed physicochemical mechanisms in inorganic and organic chemistry (including in space) and in biochemistry. Moreover, this comprehension is applied in materials science to precisely control syntheses by radiation, such as radiopolymerisation, radiografting, specific treatment of surfaces (textiles, paintings, inks, etc.), synthesis of complex nanomaterials, degradation of environmental pollutants and radioresistance of materials for nuclear reactors. In life sciences, the study of the effects of radiation on biomacromolecules (DNA, proteins, lipids) not only permits the comprehension of normal or pathological biological mechanisms, but also the improvement of our health. In particular, many advances in cancer radiotherapy, in the radioprotection of nuclear workers and the general population, as well as in the treatment of diseases and the radiosterilization of drugs, could be obtained thanks to this research. Abundantly illustrated and written in English by top international specialists who have taken care to render the subjects accessible, this work will greatly interest those curious about a scientific field that is new to them and students attracted by the original and multidisciplinary aspects of the field. At a time when radiation chemistry research is experiencing spectacular development in numerous countries, this book will attract many newcomers to the field.

CORBA DEVELOPERS'S GUIDE WITH XML. CD-ROM included

While the first design goal of the XML Recommendation states that "XML shall be straightforwardly usable over the Internet," it can be demonstrated that XML has broad application in such areas as e-commerce. With this in mind, CORBA Developer's Guide with XML focuses on XML document type definition (DTD) design using the structures of CORBA to present a new perspective to programming in an object-oriented environment. This book does not teach XML but rather discusses design for experienced object-oriented developers. Programmers need to comprehend how an analysis of an environment, CORBA, assists in the design and development of XML elements, attributes, and entities that reflect that environment. The companion CD-ROM included with this book contains a trial version of XML Authority from Extensibility, Inc., and a multimedia presentation to explain the essential concepts of the XML Recommendation. This book: > Reviews the popular markup language XML for designing applications appropriate for CORBAservices and CORBAfacilities. > Discusses the significance of document type definitions (DTDs) and the Document Object Model (DOM) for the development of XML applications. > Uses the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) specifications to establish CORBA infrastructure interfaces and associated variables. > Explains how to design Extensible Markup Language (XML) document type definitions using CORBA infrastructure. > Includes the XML production rules, XML terms, and markup examples.

Capturing the British Landscape. Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840–1921)

This book presents the life and work of the Victorian landscape painter Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921). With beautiful illustrations of his pictures, showing a timeless countryside, it explores Glendening's rapid rise from railway clerk to acclaimed artist. Whilst critics often reviewed his exhibited works, very little has been written about the artist himself. Here, new and extensive research removes layers of mystery and misinformation about his life, family and career, accurately placing him in the midst of the British art world during much of the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. Glendening was a man from humble origins, working fulltime as a railway clerk, yet was able to make his London exhibition debut at the age of twenty. This would have been almost impossible before the Victorian era, an extraordinary period when social mobility was a real possibility. Although his paintings show a tranquil and unspoiled landscape, his environment was rapidly being transformed by social, scientific and industrial developments, while advances in transport, photography and other technical discoveries undoubtedly influenced him and his fellow painters. Celebrating his uniquely Victorian story, the book places Glendening within his historical context. Running alongside the main text is a timeline outlining significant landmarks, from political and social events to artistic and technical innovations. Thoroughly researched over many years, the narrative explores why and for whom he painted, his artistic training and inspirations. Painting at Hampton and Greenwich, beside the River Thames, Glendening soon discovered the Welsh hills and became a member of the Bettws-y-Coed Artists' Colony, founded by David Cox. His masterful landscapes also include views of the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, the Norfolk Broads, the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. The book uncovers new information about the Victorian art world and embraces such aspects as Royal Academy prejudices, the popularity of Glendening's work at home and abroad, especially Australia and America, his use of photography, and the sourcing of his art materials. Family trees are included, and other artistic family members discussed, notably his son and pupil Alfred Illman Glendening (1861-1907). There is a comprehensive list of their exhibited works at the Royal Academy and other major institutions, and details of their paintings in public collections.
