A linguistic picture of women's position in society
A discussion of English and Polish gender systems, generic words, forms of address, referring expressions and other topics, provides evidence that in these two languages males and females are not treated equally. The main concern of this book is linguistic sexism. The data indicate that speakers of both languages treat male as the norm, attribute less desirable qualities to the speech and behaviour of women, stereotype women more than men, or simply make women linguistically invisible members of society.

Bonoure and Buxum
If married in church, medieval women vowed before God and their husbands to be ‘bonoure and buxum', that is, meek and obedient in bed and at table. This book is a study of wives in a variety of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century romance, fabliaux, cycle drama, life-writing, lyrics and hagiography. The volume examines key moments that defined life as a married woman : her eligibility to become a wife, the wedding ceremony, her conjugal rights and duties, childbirth and her contribution to the family economy. The book explores the way in which the literary representation of wives is in dialogue with discourses that strove to construct and regulate the role of ‘wife'; canon and secular law, marriage liturgy, medical treatises on the female body, sermons, manuals of spiritual instruction, biblical paradigms, conduct books and misogamous writings. Moreover, the volume examines the possibilities for subversion of these paradigms by listening to literary wives speak both within and against these discourses. Real women's attitudes, and strategies of subversion, are woven into the volume throughout, as recorded in church and manorial court records, in their wills and in their writing.

The Picture of Dorian Gray
Le manuscrit original du Portrait de Dorian Gray "Les livres que le monde juge immoraux sont ceux qui révèlent sa propre ignominie". Les éditions des Saints Pères présentent le manuscrit original du Portrait de Dorian Gray. Ce document montre le texte de Wilde ainsi qu'il est initialement écrit, dans sa toute première version. Le lecteur peut à la fois observer l'écrivain aiguisant sa prose et pratiquant une forme d'autocensure bien en amont de la publication, ayant sans doute l'intuition d'avoir franchi quelques lignes rouges sur le plan des bonnes moeurs. Oscar Wilde et la censure Oscar Wilde entreprend l'écriture de ce premier jet de 13 chapitres en 1889. Il est destiné à être publié dans les pages du Lippincott's Magazine, une revue américaine. Celles-ci révèlent le talent de leur auteur, mais aussi un contexte : celui d'une Angleterre prude et homophobe au 19e siècle, que Wilde a conscience de pouvoir choquer avec un tel texte. C'est pourquoi il atténue l'ambiguïté de la relation entre Basil et Dorian - par exemple, lorsque Basil évoque la beauté de son modèle, "beauty" devient "good looks" (allure), "passion" devient "feelings" (sentiments), etc. Certains passages entiers sont barrés, comme des confessions émouvantes et amoureuses de Basil. En avril 1890, Wilde finit son texte et le fait taper à la machine afin de le soumettre à Lippincott's. James Stoddart, le rédacteur en chef, l'accepte tout en redoutant son parfum homo-érotique. Il se met à lui-même censurer Le Portrait de Dorian Gray, effaçant environ 500 mots, dont des phrases entières, comme la tirade de Basil au sujet de son portrait. Le manuscrit du scandale En dépit des nombreuses strates de censure qui ont donné à Dorian Gray la forme de sa publication, le numéro de juillet 1890 de Lippincott's suscite l'hostilité des lecteurs. Les critiques décrient le texte, le décrivant comme "une fiction toxique, dont l'atmosphère étouffante et diabolique abonde d'odeurs de putréfaction morale et spirituelle" écrite à l'attention de "nobles hors-la-loi et petits télégraphistes pervertis" . Directe conséquence de ce tollé : la puissante enseigne WS Smith refuse de vendre le numéro dans ses librairies. Malgré, ou grâce à cette réception scandaleuse qui ne peut qu'attirer l'attention, Wilde commence alors à retravailler et à développer l'histoire, afin de la publier sous forme de livre. Il effectue des changements de structure, imagine d'autres personnages, ajoute 6 chapitres et une sélection d'aphorismes pour préfacer l'ensemble et atténue encore un peu plus les passages décriés. La magnifique confession de Basil à Dorian disparaît alors complètement. Une préface de Merlin Holland Merlin Holland est un spécialiste d'Oscar Wilde et le petit-fils de l'écrivain. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs livres de référence : The Wilde Album (1998), Coffee with Oscar Wilde (2007), A Portrait of Oscar Wilde (2008).

Areal linguistics is having its "Golden Age", but its doleful problems as well. Its theory of language contact and linguistic interference is full of controversies which can be resolved only by a thorough analysis of the essentials of language interrelations and the results of their interactions. The monograph is based on a large corpus of linguistic and extralinguistic material collected during the last few decades (including field-work in different countries of Europe, Asia and North America) on the results of language contacts between English, German and other Teutonic languages, between Romance, Slavic and other Indo-European vernaculars, between Uralic, Turkic, Tungusic-Manchurian and Palaeo-Asian, and other languages. An attempt is made to gain an insight into the "mechanism" of language contact, to single out its types and subtypes and to project the "curve" of the dynamism of their linguistic interference (the receptor-language levels' penetrability). Special attention is paid to different varieties of plurilingualism.

The contributions to this volume by H.W. Dechert, A.K. Fathman, F. Grosjean, D.C. O'Connell, M. Raupach, K. Sajavaara/J. Lehtonen, H.W. Seliger and R. Wiese all deal with speech data from native speakers of different languages, or native speakers and language learners of the same language, or speakers in their native and their second languages. They are the results of various methodological attempts to assess speech using a cross-linguistic approach and represent an area of research which may be called "Contrastive Psycholinguistics".

Strange Adventures
Strange Adventures examines portrayals of womanhood in the works of prize-winning French author Pierrette Fleutiaux. Fleutiaux's refreshing pictures of womanhood offer insights into how women can become more whole, substantial and free in themselves and in their relationships, as well as how they can contribute to the external world through their creativity and leadership. The study demonstrates how Fleutiaux's heroines navigate the external, bodily and inner situations of adolescence, early adult life, marriage, motherhood, maturity, leadership and death, in the process developing greater inner resources of wisdom, compassion and resilience. This volume considers selections from Fleutiaux's oeuvre, from her first short fiction Histoire de la chauve-souris to her recent Loli le temps venu, including Métamorphoses de la reine (Goncourt de la nouvelle) and Nous sommes éternels (Prix Femina). Using a theoretical framework which draws on Jungian concepts and the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir, the study analyses women's individuation trajectories at each stage of life. Throughout, Fleutiaux's depictions are shown to pose a challenge to existing conceptions of womanhood and individuality, thus opening up new understandings of what it means to be a woman, and to be human.

Known primarily for the novel, Aus guter Familie, Gabriele Reuter has not yet been accorded the attention she deserves for her contribution to German literature in general and women's writing in particular. The precisely observed portraits of women in the novels discussed in this volume allow us to experience the complex interplay of societal norms and individual needs which shape feminine existence. Among the themes treated are misguided motherhood, the virtue of the unwed mother, the conflict between the will to be and the need to love and be loved, woman's role in the political sphere and a comparison of womanhood in two generations. One of the enduring pleasures of reading Reuter is the rich variety of female characters from the early part of the twentieth century.

English-German Contrastive Linguistics: A Bibliography
In the last few years contrastive linguistics has experienced a renaissance. In studies of the German and the English language the fragmentation of interests seems to be particularly undesirable. This bibliography attempts to inventory the contrastive studies concerning the two languages including questions of interference, theory and practice of translation and didactics. The bibliography concerns not only researchers, teachers and students at university, but also practicing teachers in schools and adult education, who are interested in an overview of this linguistic discipline (language teachers, teacher trainers etc.).

The Search for Lyonnesse
Although Mme de Lafayette is acknowledged as the founder of the modern novel, her precise legacy has been understood only in relation to male-authored texts. However, she wrote as a woman, addressing issues that concerned women of her day, particularly the problem of the apparent incompatibility of sexual fulfilment and the institution of marriage. This study seeks to identify how La Princesse de Clèves was interpreted by three of Mme de Lafayette's most talented women successors and to show how their more sombre and subversive view of society was mediated in works of fiction which have strong affinities with the contes de fées for which they are well known. The novels of Mlle Bernard, Mme d'Aulnoy and Mlle de La Force are significant, not simply for what they tell us about themselves as women writers but also for what they reveal about the origins of the eighteenth-century novel.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. How these relationships are formed, how they impact gendered understandings of women and men, how families are constituted and relationships developed, and how they affect the children of these families and their education, are the issues explored in this book. Hilma af Klint. The Five Notebook 1
In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

In Exile and Identity in Autobiographies of Twentieth-Century Spanish Women, Karla P. Zepeda studies the experience of exile and its effects on identity in three autobiographies : In Place of Splendor by Constancia de la Mora, Memoria de la melancolía by María Teresa León, and Seis anos de mi vida by Federica Montseny. These three prominent Spanish women of the Second Republic became exiles at the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War due to the onset of the Francisco Franco regime. The political expatriation caused their relocation into various countries : the United States, France, Argentina, and Italy. The repositioning initiated a process of self-reinvention, as the women come in contact with social circumstances prompting new versions of self. Through their works, these women negotiate their identity in relation to the lost homeland and the new locale. Exile and Identity in Autobiographies of Twentieth-Century Spanish Women examines the diverse character of diaspora, the social transactions deployed in a variety of circumstances, and the self-negotiations elicited in social interactions. Identity proves to be an intentional re-creation of self, enacted in particular circumstances, and negotiated as a response to social conditions.

Coédition Dilecta / Mucem Langues : français / anglais Exposition monographique dans le bâtiment GHR du Mucem du 1er décembre 2022 au 16 avril 2023, expositions dans le même temps à la Vieille Charité et au FRAC, Marseille Co-commissaires et co-directeurs d'ouvrage : Hélia Paukner et Philippe Dagen L'exposition "Ghada Amer" est la première rétrospective de l'artiste en France. Née au Caire en 1963, Ghada Amer emménage à Nice en 1974 avec ses parents. Quelque dix ans plus tard, elle s'y forme à la Villa Arson avant de rejoindre l'Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques à Paris. Révoltée par la difficulté de s'affirmer comme peintre dans les années 1980 et a fortiori comme femme peintre, Ghada Amer élabore une oeuvre de toiles et d'installations brodées ainsi que de sculptures et de jardins, à travers lesquels la peinture s'affirme progressivement. En 1999, elle est invitée par Harald Szeemann à exposer à la Biennale de Venise, où elle reçoit le prix UNESCO. Depuis 1996, elle vit et travaille à New York. Dans trois lieux marseillais, la rétrospective réunit les différents modes d'expression plastique de l'artiste franco-égyptienne, depuis ses débuts jusqu'à ses créations les plus récentes. Au Mucem (fort Saint-Jean, GHR), le parcours transculturel et international de l'artiste sera mis en lumière. L'Orient, sa perception par l'Occident, la traductibilité d'une culture dans une autre, la religion, la condition féminine, l'actualité : autant de thèmes dont Ghada Amer livre une vision personnelle, engagée et nuancée, s'affirmant comme une des grandes voix des débats actuels sur les enjeux postcoloniaux de la création. En regard, une sculpture-jardin sera créée en extérieur, au fort Saint-Jean. Des photographies inédites de l'oeuvre produite seront intégrées à l'ouvrage. Au FRAC PACA La question de la femme transcende pour Ghada Amer celle de l'appartenance culturelle ou religieuse. Résolument féministe, elle s'est emparée en peintre du médium traditionnellement féminin de la broderie. Entre hommage et revendication, ses toiles entrent en dialogue avec les maîtres d'une histoire de l'art trop longtemps dominée par les hommes. Au-delà, elles se développent sous le signe d'une puissance créatrice jubilatoire et d'un intérêt nouveau pour le portrait. A la chapelle de la Vieille Charité Par de passionnants transferts d'une technique à l'autre, les expérimentations picturales de Ghada Amer investissent le champ de la sculpture - à travers installations et sculptures paysagères, mais aussi à travers des oeuvres en céramique et en bronze récemment poussées dans le sens de la monumentalité. Le livre portera un même titre pour les trois lieux (même si les expositions auront trois titres différents).

This dictionary is two things in one : an alphabetical compilation of acronyms and abbreviations together with their full forms and an inverted index, which gives the user thematic access to the information contained in the data base. The more than 13.000 entries are an attempt to lighten the burden of language teachers and applied linguists, translators and interpreters, librarians and administrators, whose job it is to mediate in and between language communities in daily or intermittent contact with the scourge of acronyms and abbreviations. A range of additional features distinguishes this dictionary from its competitors : More than 1200 addresses (if the acronym stands for an organization/institution); more than 3000 bibliographic references to the concepts behind the short forms ; ample crossreferencing to related entries ; a listing of new word coinages on the basis of acronyms.

The German Effect on D.H. Lawrence and his Works 1885-1912
This study analyzes in depth the German effect upon D.H. Lawrence and his works from his birth in 1885 to his departure from England in 1912. German literary, philosophical and musical works had considerable impact on Lawrence's formation as an artist. They also influenced the creation of his own literary theory, entering his life concurrently with the three problems of class, woman and religion, which evolved into his major literary themes. The German effect is thus demonstrated to be the confirmation of Lawrence's strong tendency toward subjectivism in literary art : it strengthened his conviction that his art set him apart from all classes of society ; it encouraged the development of his view of women as the sexual, not the maternal, mediatrix to art ; and it fortified his denial of traditional Christianity and assisted his creation of his personal vitalistic creed.

The six revised papers collected here - two have been translated into English - address in their different ways questions relating to grammatical meaning (both semantics and pragmatics) and the analysis of constructions. Syntactic Variation and Unconscious Linguistic Change
By examining adjectival relative clauses in the dialect of Dorset, in the Southwest of England, this volume illustrates how contemporary British dialects can contribute to our understanding of (unconscious) linguistic change. The analysis, which is based upon tape-recorded interviews with numerous informants, as well as written dialect imitations extracted from a variety of sources, shows that dialectal relativization is governed by an intricate network of both linguistic and non-linguistic (i.e. regional, social, stylistic) factors. The corpus has been incorporated in its entirety and perfectly lends itself for further dialectological research.

The relationships between language variation and social structure within an urban community are far too complex to be adequately handled by traditional methods. The Tyneside Linguistic Survey offers a radical approach to sociolinguistic modelling, using multi-variate techniques. Linguistic and social "clusters" are discovered within a sample of Tyneside speakers by generating classifications based on a wide range of linguistic and social variables. In this study Dr. Jones-Sargent lucidly presents the background and philosophy of the TLS, the implementation of the computer model and an analysis of the results.
