Arrival of Mira, Love story between Bhojan and Mira

Arrival of Mira Foreword Arrival of Mira tells the story of a beautiful young woman who held true to her faith despite many severe hardships. Mira was still only a child when she decided that Ginidhara Gopal (Lord Krishna) was her 'husband' and that she wanted to devote her life to serving and worshipping him. Later, the now orphaned Mira was married to Bhojan, the prince of Mewar and son of Rana, the king of Chittoor. Bhojan fell in love at first sight but found it hard to understand Mira's utter devotion to Ginidhara. Mira suffered at the hands of her in-laws who could not understand the depth of her love for Ginidhara and wanted her to follow their worship of Kali (in the form of Durga). Mira suffered imprisonment in a haunted palace and then exile for her beliefs. Even her friends were persecuted because of her uncompromising love for Lord Krishna. Eventually Bhojan came to understand his wife's piety. The story is told in the form of a musical play where the love story is interwoven with delightful songs and dances. The character of Mira is one to win the hearts of all who read of her. Her gentle devotion and steadfast belief are an inspiration to everyone. Thank you, Dr Shuddhananda Bharati for having made this beautiful story available to us. Daye Craddock Editions ASSA, Christian Piaget

ORIENTED MATROIDS. Second Edition

Oriented matroids are a very natural mathematical concept which prescrits itself in many different guises and which has connections and applications to many different areas. These include discrete and computational geometry, combinatorics, convexity, topology, algebraic geometry, operations research, computer science and theoretical chemistry. This is the first comprehensive, accessible account of the subject. It is intended for a diverse audience: graduate students who wish to learn the subject from scratch, researchers in the various fields of application who want to concentrate on certain aspects of the theory; specialists who need a thorough reference work; and others at points in between. A list of exercises and open problems ends each chapter. For the second edition, the authors have expanded the bibliography greatly to ensure that it remains comprehensive and up-to-date, and they have also added an appendix surveying research since the work was first published.

A Handbook of Global Citizenship Education. The Belgian perspective

Presented as a response to contemporary global issues (such as sustainable development, interculturality or democracy), Global Citizenship Education (GCE) aims to "open people's eyes and minds to the realities of the world and awaken them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and human rights for all". Given that GCE is now perceived as a means of bringing contemporary world issues into classrooms, teachers and school principals are increasingly encouraged to adopt it. Indeed, new skills frameworks require students to develop knowledge on global issues, while students themselves are demanding this education because they seek the means to play a greater role in the world. Often addressed in the form of social or environmental issues perceived as being of serious concern, GCE is expected to feature increasingly in the curricula of schools and universities in the future. But in Belgium and around the world, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has been the subject of debate in recent years. This handbook reflects these various debates. Initially published in French, it is, above all, an attempt to compensate for the absence of texts on the subject from the French-speaking world, notably from the Belgian research and practice world. This English version enhances the international visibility of the vital academic, institutional, and professional sectors addressing GCE in Belgium, and highlights the specific features of GCE in this country. It will be particularly useful for students, teachers and practitioners, and everyone who wants to understand the challenges of Global Citizenship Education today.

A Year in the French Style. Interiors & Entertaining by Antoinette Poisson

Maison Lescop, a historic residence in Port-Louis, Brittany, has conserved its original eighteenth-century decor that was conceived for a French importer for the East Indian trading company. Today, it is the home and restoration project for the creative duo behind the Parisian design team Antoinette Poisson. Enchanted by the poetic beauty of hand-painted domino paper prints-from floral and fauna to geometric and ikat-they have appointed their new home with elegant decorative touches : handcrafted lampshades, wallpaper-lined cupboards, assorted table settings, and luxurious textiles. Celebrating a French lifestyle inspired by the charm of the eighteenth century-through its objects, gastronomy, and traditional savoir faire-the authors invite readers to share their art de vivre throughout the seasons- from gathering shellfish on the beach to shopping at the local market, from antiquing to foraging, and from indigo textile dyeing to block-printing on artisanal paper. This book is an ode to timeless pleasures and a life well-lived... à la française.

Multiple Origins

Based on extensive research this work gives a detailed account and a reappraisal of Edward Westermarck's thought. Westermarck had versatile relations to Victorian evolutionists (Wallace, Tylor, Spencer), and to British social anthropologists (Frazer, Haddon, Rivers, Malinowski) and psychologists (Shand, Sully). Westermarck was a pioneer of anthropological fieldwork, and his writings on the history of marriage and on the origin and development of moral ideas are modern classics. He was a transitional figure between evolutionism, on the one hand, and functionalism and structuralism, on the other hand. Westermarck's theories of exogamy and incest, and his notions of psychological ethics, moral emotions and concepts, and expanding morality were referred to by Durkheim and Freud, as they are referred to by present-day evolutionary theorists. The search for mankind continues to be of current interest.

As Others See Us

This collection of articles shows that some media products ought to carry a mental health warning : Some school books still contain simplistic presentations of England and Germany. English and German journalists admit that the entertainment value of their articles sometimes takes precedence over impartial reporting. English children's books may contain a reasonable mixture of good and bad Germans but some wartime films needed more sinister types for propaganda. "Made in Germany" originated in English legislation as a label against German competition but became a German marketing tool. A minister in Margaret Thatcher's cabinet made unprintable remarks about Germany. When they were printed, the Ridley Affair proved to be the beginning of the downfall of Britain's controversial Prime Minister.

Cinéma

Lee Chang-Dong

Sri Krishna and His Gospel, Sri Krishna’s flute calls you to love

Sri Krishna and His Gospel We dedicate this Book to Sri Krishna the World teacher whose Gita is the World-Gospel. This was written during a long Yogic communion with the Lord Krishna, by his fervent devotee Yogi Shuddhananda Bharati who lives and loves the Gita. Saint Shuddhananda Bharati invoked Sri Krishna in his meditation and took inspiration from that Supreme Grace for every line of the Holy Book. Thus this is Sri Krishna's treatise on His Gita. This is a book for all. We have not put any picture of Krishna in the book for who can paint his universal beauty ? The Nature-universe is his Visvarupa. So dear readers, see him in Nature's beauty and contemplate upon each line of this book. This book teaches you how to live in God-consciousness. It is a real pleasure and a great privilege for me to present this treatise on Sri Krishna and His Gospel to you. Thank you, Dr. Shuddhananda Bharati for having transmitted Sri Krishna and His Gospel to us. The first edition of this book is dated on 24th November 1943. Editions ASSA, Christian Piaget

Histoire de l'art

Paris Moderne, 1914-1945. Art - Design - Architecture - Photography - Literature - Cinema - Fashion

Whether at peace or at war, Paris during the first half of the twentieth century pulsated with frenzied energy. Creatives from across Europe flocked to the French capital where they had free rein to experiment with innovative forms of expression. Inspired by the challenge made possible through technological advances and market expectations, members from every artistic discipline-art, design, architecture, photography, fashion, and cinema-forged the new face of this resolutely modern city. A kaleidoscopic portrait of this exhilarating artistic surge is documented here in dictionary form, through biographical profiles of nearly one hundred leading creators, including Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Le Corbusier, Tamara de Lempicka, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Man Ray, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Helena Rubinstein, and Gertrude Stein. The richly illustrated volume is completed with a photographic journal of Paris today by Antonio Martinelli, retracing the incredible architectural and urban landscape that still bears the hallmarks of this wildly prodigious period. Hidden dividend distributions & hidden capital contributions, 2e édition. A technical guide

Luxembourg companies have a legal personality that is separate from that of their shareholder(s). Consequently, they may enter into agreements with their shareholders as they do with third parties. However, when the terms and conditions of those agreements do not adhere to the arm's length standard, tax adjustments may be required in accordance with the concepts of hidden dividend distribution and hidden capital contribution. Both concepts aim at a separation of the sphere of the company (which is itself subject to corporate income tax on its worldwide income) from that of its shareholders. As such, the concepts of hidden dividend distribution and hidden capital contribution are cornerstones of Luxembourg's transfer pricing rules. In addition, in the context of associated enterprises (in a group of companies), tax adjustments might be required under Article 56 of the Luxembourg Income Tax Law ("LITL"). Hence, a clear distinction must be made between agreements that adhere to the arm's length principle and agreements that, motivated by the shareholding relationship, shift advantages from the company to the shareholder or vice versa. Therefore, each contractual relationship between a company and its shareholder(s) must be considered. Luxembourg tax law does not provide for exhaustive definitions of hidden dividend distributions and hidden capital contributions. Both concepts have their origins in case law of the German Reich Tax Court (Reichsfinanzhof) and have been carefully extended and refined through the years by the German Federal Tax Court (Bundesfinanzhof). Since the publication of the first edition of this book back in 2011, the Luxembourg Courts had to decide in numerous cases involving both concepts. This book offers a one-of-a-kind, practical insight into the tax treatment of hidden dividend distributions, hidden capital contributions and triangular cases. Charts, case studies and checklists aid the reader in identifying and assessing the various cases in which hidden dividend distributions and hidden capital contributions may arise. A new chapter with practical case studies considers situations that may occur in the context of multinational groups, Luxembourg alternative funds and individual shareholders. Reading this thorough guide is indispensable for an in-depth understanding of the concepts of hidden dividend distribution and hidden capital contribution. Tax advisers, practitioners and tax students should gain substantially from the insights provided in this book.

Understanding human nature the psychology of personality

"Understanding Human Nature : The Psychology of Personality" is a seminal work by Alfred Adler, an Austrian psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Published in 1927, this book presents Adler's theories on personality and human behavior, which laid the foundation for the school of individual psychology. In the book, Adler explores the fundamental aspects of human nature, including the dynamics of personality development, the influence of social factors, and the significance of individual experiences and perceptions. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the subjective experiences of individuals and how they shape their behavior and worldview. One of Adler's key concepts is the "inferiority complex, " which he argues is a driving force behind human behavior. He suggests that individuals strive for superiority to overcome feelings of inferiority, and that these efforts shape their personality and motivations. "Understanding Human Nature" offers insights into various aspects of human psychology, including the formation of personality traits, the role of early childhood experiences, and the impact of societal influences. Adler's holistic approach to understanding human behavior continues to influence psychology and psychotherapy to this day.

Experiencing Same-Sex Marriage

This book provides an understanding of how the legal and cultural debates and advances and limitations on same-sex marriage are experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people, same-sex couples, and their social networks. Using data collected from hundreds of GLBT people, same-sex couples, and their social networks over the past decade, the book examines the following topics : same-sex marriages' impact on how GLBT individuals view their relationships and community ; same-sex couples' decision making regarding whether to marry or not ; the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their families-of-origin regarding same-sex marriage ; the same-sex marriage experiences of understudied members of the GLBT community ; and the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their social networks in locations with restrictions against legally recognized same-sex marriage. These findings are examined through the lens of the social scientific study of relationships. They are based on a communication studies perspective on personal relationships, and therefore emphasize communication concepts and theories relevant to the understanding of same-sex marriage experiences.

Defaced! Money, Conflict, Protest

This fully illustrated catalogue is the first of its kind to examine the relationship between money, power, resistance and dissent. It accompanies major exhibitions at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. War, revolution and protest are defining themes in all periods of world history, shaping national identities and influencing material and visual culture in myriad ways. The ubiquity of money makes it a powerful vehicle for diseminating the messages of the state to the public, but the symbolic and nationalistic iconography of currency could also be subverted or mutilated in powerful acts of defiance, rebellion and propaganda. Beginning in Britain in the wake of the American and French Revolutions, the exhibition explores the political and social tensions present in society, and communicated through the production or defacement of money, over the past 200 years. It contrasts the use of money by the radicals of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, such as Thomas Spence, and the Suffragette movement, with the money produced by European empires as they scrambled to dominate the rest of the world. The currency histories of the two World Wars reveal the subversion of the very nature of what money is, and highlight the role of money as the tool of occupation, imprisonment, resistance and remembrance. The coins countermarked during the Troubles in Northern Ireland hint at the polarised nature of political discourse and sectarian violence. The exhibition culminates with the work of contemporary artists and activists who use money to highlight the challenges of the modern world, both locally and globally - as a canvas, as a raw material, or as a powerful means of communication. From a unique coin commemorating the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 to a Syrian banknote refashioned to raise awareness of the refugee crisis, this publication showcases many newly acquired objects from the Fitzwilliam Museum collection, alongside materials from the Archive of Modern Conflict. These objects are enhanced by a number of important loans from museums and private collections, including the cannon used at the Battle of Mafeking, an exploded transit van and contemporary art works that take money, its authority and destruction as their theme. Each object constitutes a witness statement to its time and its conflict, and each section has its own story to tell. The chapters - by archaeologists, historians, curators, and artists - create a rich context for the more than 130 objects in the catalogue, most of which have never been studied in depth or published before.

Des taurins et des hommes. Cameroun, Nigeria

In Cameroon and Nigerina, taurines - small humpless cattle -form a minority in comparison with zebu. Nevertheless, they are better suited to the environment. Taurines (Bos taurus) are resistant to tsetse fly and could help in the farming of infested zones and are the only cattle that can be reared it in combination with arable farming in certain wet regions However, relaunching taurine rearing in both Cameroon and Nigeria has always been a problem. The overlapping of the social religious and political spheres in which they are involved means that rearing is archaic, difficult to adopt by contemporary village societies and is therefore disappearing, The taurine remains to be rendered "secular" and incorporated in a market economy. Geographers, ethnologies, anthropologists and veterinary/zootechny specialists have contributed to this book. It provides better understanding of the social functioning of taurine rearing and a precise description of the cattle and their behaviour. The latter features are prerequisites for the identification of new types of animal farmers and the implementation of new zootechnical and social practices.
