Not least of the features of that society was church establishment with its implied - but not enforced - uniformity. The end of slavery did not put an end to these prejudices. It was in such an atmosphere that Methodists sought to establish themselves in this island. This book is an attempt to analyse their experience.

Its archivolts have caused controversy and some remain unidentified. After the overthrow of the Somoza regime in July 1979 a political movement assumed power in Nicaragua whose approach to development was totally different from that of the previous dictatorship. Thus the question arises, how these changes affected the country's communication system. Main emphasis in this empirical study is on mass communication. Besides the structure of the communication system and its development, its interrelations with other subsystems of society - like politics, economy, and education - are also examined.

A discussion of English and Polish gender systems, generic words, forms of address, referring expressions and other topics, provides evidence that in these two languages males and females are not treated equally. The main concern of this book is linguistic sexism. The data indicate that speakers of both languages treat male as the norm, attribute less desirable qualities to the speech and behaviour of women, stereotype women more than men, or simply make women linguistically invisible members of society.

The book describes a formalised and implemented parser for Norwegian which is related to Government and Binding Theory (GB theory). Particular attention is paid to empirical phenomena which have been problematic for many parsing systems for natural language (e.g. parasitic gaps, crossing dependencies, extractions from relative clauses). The relation between the GB model and theoretical constructs from GB on the one hand and the processing system (the parser) on the other is another issue discussed at length in the book.

This book presents the life and work of the Victorian landscape painter Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921). With beautiful illustrations of his pictures, showing a timeless countryside, it explores Glendening's rapid rise from railway clerk to acclaimed artist. Whilst critics often reviewed his exhibited works, very little has been written about the artist himself. Here, new and extensive research removes layers of mystery and misinformation about his life, family and career, accurately placing him in the midst of the British art world during much of the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. Glendening was a man from humble origins, working fulltime as a railway clerk, yet was able to make his London exhibition debut at the age of twenty. This would have been almost impossible before the Victorian era, an extraordinary period when social mobility was a real possibility. Although his paintings show a tranquil and unspoiled landscape, his environment was rapidly being transformed by social, scientific and industrial developments, while advances in transport, photography and other technical discoveries undoubtedly influenced him and his fellow painters. Celebrating his uniquely Victorian story, the book places Glendening within his historical context. Running alongside the main text is a timeline outlining significant landmarks, from political and social events to artistic and technical innovations. Thoroughly researched over many years, the narrative explores why and for whom he painted, his artistic training and inspirations. Painting at Hampton and Greenwich, beside the River Thames, Glendening soon discovered the Welsh hills and became a member of the Bettws-y-Coed Artists' Colony, founded by David Cox. His masterful landscapes also include views of the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, the Norfolk Broads, the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. The book uncovers new information about the Victorian art world and embraces such aspects as Royal Academy prejudices, the popularity of Glendening's work at home and abroad, especially Australia and America, his use of photography, and the sourcing of his art materials. Family trees are included, and other artistic family members discussed, notably his son and pupil Alfred Illman Glendening (1861-1907). There is a comprehensive list of their exhibited works at the Royal Academy and other major institutions, and details of their paintings in public collections.

Gerhart Hauptmann's relationship to Naturalism has repeatedly been a subject of controversy. To clarify his position, this study analyses both published and unpublished opinions of his contemporaries within Naturalism. Following an outline of Naturalism based on the authors' own views of the often conflicting concepts related to the movement, emphasis is placed upon Naturalist critical response to Hauptmann's early works and upon the works of other Naturalist dramatists in relation to Hauptmann, underlining the authors' dependence upon his dramas as a model for literary success.

Quel peut être le point commun entre des oeuvres aussi diverses que la Guerre des Gaules, les Fables de Lafontaine, l'Evangéliaire d'Averbode et les aventures de Sibylline ? A première vue, aucun. Pourtant, ces oeuvres ont toutes marqué leur époque, à leur propre échelle et dans des domaines divers. Elles constituent toutes également une trace de notre Histoire, témoins d'un certain passé, d'un autre temps. Elles ont également pour point commun d'être parvenues jusqu'à nous. L'écrit reste, mais il vit. Il est créé, relu, validé ; il est modifié, corrigé, transformé. Il se transmet, voyage, circule. Officiellement, souvent ; sous le manteau, parfois. Quelquefois même, il est interdit, censuré. On le cache, on le brûle. Mais trop tard : il a été lu. Il peut donc être recopié et reprendre sa route. A travers l'espace, comme à travers le temps. Siècle après siècle, l'Homme a conservé ces traces écrites de son passé, pour constituer une histoire, se forger une mémoire et transmettre savoirs, croyances et idées à ses successeurs. Pour interroger le rapport de l'Homme à l'écrit, l'exposition "Empreintes" aborde huit facettes de l'écrit illustrées par une centaine d'oeuvres, de l'Antiquité à nos ¡ours. Comment l'homme a-t-il conservé la mémoire de sa propre histoire ? Quels sont ces savoirs et ces oeuvres qui ont franchi les siècles et ceux dont la transmission a été interdite ? Comment l'homme a-t-il mis par écrit son état de la connaissance du monde, au fil de ses explorations, de ses expériences ? Les oeuvres présentées proviennent essentiellement des collections des Bibliothèques de l'Université. Elles sont accompagnées d'autres exemples prêtés par l'Université de Gand, le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège / La Boverie, le Musée Wittert et le CEDOPAL.

Les sciences sociales se sont largement attachées ces dernières années à analyser l'apparent silence des "sans-voix" . Elles montrent que ces derniers sont bien mal nommés, au sens où leur parole, souvent tenue pour quantité négligeable ou discréditée, minorée ou (auto)censurée, n'en a pas moins d'existence et parfois, de vigueur. Paysans, ouvrières, précaires, travailleurs informels, colonisés, exilés, soldats, prostituées, enfants malades, jeunes de quartiers populaires : s'ils occupent des positions dominées dans les rapports sociaux de classe, de race, de genre, de nation ou de génération, les groupes invités à s'exprimer dans les dispositifs étudiés au fil des chapitres de ce volume sont généralement constitués comme collectifs par ceux-là même qui leur adressent cette offre de prise de parole. L'ouvrage place ainsi la focale sur le travail politique de ces entreprises de réhabilitation symbolique et sur leurs acteurs. Ils contribuent non seulement à donner un sens à ces dispositifs mais aussi à provoquer, configurer et encadrer les discours qui y sont tenus : militants, artistes et professionnels de la culture, personnel administratif et politique, chercheurs, travailleurs et patients du secteur médico-social, journalistes... Dans les six parties qui forment la trame du livre, les auteur·e·s analysent, dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, une diversité de configurations relationnelles dans lesquelles des joueurs réputés "sans-voix" s'engagent ou sont engagés dans un jeu d'énonciation, auquel ils sont souvent peu préparés et dont les règles sont généralement fixées par des joueurs de rang plus élevé. Si ces dispositifs sont loin de fonctionner comme des instruments permettant magiquement d'extraire les dominés des rapports de domination, les acteurs qui souhaitent "donner la parole aux "sans-voix"" peuvent en général être crédités des intentions qu'ils déclarent. Ils contribuent, à ce titre, à reconfigurer les règles du jeu politique.
