On Deixis in English and Polish
Deixis verges on the borderline of philosophy, semantics and pragmatics. Since no satisfactory theory of deixis has been proposed so far, this book gives a critical examination of the state of the art and suggests a solution within the framework of discourse analysis. The deictic systems of English and Polish are compared in termes of algorithms, which determine the distribution of demonstrative pronouns in the two languages. Many difficulties found in other approaches can be escaped through the application of algorithms accounting for the speaker's choices in his use of demonstratives during the discourse flow.

Coral reef ascidians of New Caledonia
Ascidians are common marine animals present on all types of substrata but abundant and highly diversified in warm oceans. They represent a large portion of the underwater pictures taken by divers of the ORSTOM center in Noumea.
One millimeter to some decimeters in size, cryptic or brightly coloured, motionless, often in the shade, ascidians are not well known, but are present everywhere. They are surprising not only in their variable shapes but also in their unique biological characteristics. They represent the boundary between invertebrates and vertebrates, although the adults look like stones or sponges.
With a beautiful selection of photographs, the authors discuss the essential anatomy, the modes of budding, the pigments, and the spicules. The ecological requirements are detailed and symbionts, parasites and predators are reviewed. The relationship with man concerns fouling species on ships, their use as food end as a source of pharmacological products.
The final section provides a key for the identification of the most common or spectacular species.

The present monograph complements Cohen's 1982 study of shyster. The main contributions of his new work are a who's who for the shyster story and a revisionist look at the coiner of the term (Mike Walsh). Scholars are currently agreed that Walsh was a raving, ranting demagogue and a wild-eyed genius whose only contribution was the introduction of gangs into New York City's political process. Cohen argues, however, that Walsh possessed far more humanity (and possibly influence) than his critics have given him credit for. It is noteworthy too that the studies of Walsh and shyster shed light on each other ; neither is complete alone.

German-Irish Corporate Relationships
The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

VARIATION IN LEAF STRUCTURE. An Ecophysiological Perspective
Leaf structure is central to plant function, and the implications of this, both to the plant itself and beyond, at the ecosystem level, are now becoming fully realized. This book addresses variation in leaf structure in detail, with reviews and analyses on specific aspects, and in so doing it encapsulates the state of current knowledge in this important area. The impact of leaf structure on plant furiction is certainly far-reaching - it is intimately connected with the rate at which the leaf fixes carbon dioxide, the rate at which the plant can grow and the efficiency with which the plant conserves nutrients. It is therefore related to plant performance in different habitats, and can be used to characterize species, to define functional groups and even to predict the response of species to varying environmental conditions. The impact of variation in leaf
structure of component species on community productivity and nutrient cycling is an area of intense current research. The synergy created through the various approaches to leaf structure discussed in this book has produced a unique resource, from which it is possible to identify those issues and challenges that will be the most vital for the future.

Corporatism and the Stability of Capitalist Democracies
This dissertation treats a problem which originally stems from Marxist political economic thinking : why do representatives of the working-class compromise with representatives of the capitalist class on major socio-economic topics on a national level, and what do such compromises look like ? The author establishes the claim that macro-economic compromises between organized classes are both likely to result and unstable in their nature. It is shown how the state may act as an actor supporting the establishment of an institutionalized class compromise and how it may try to prevent the breakdown of it. After elaborating these claims in a dynamic macro-economic model, the author describes developments of class compromises in post World War II Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands to illustrate the theory.

Disputes on human rights violation before the ecowas court of justice
Mandated to make judgments on human rights cases since 2005, the ECOWAS Court of Justice has undeniably acquired the reputation of a forum for human rights protection, in the manner of courts of justice as prestigious as the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights or the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. With no systematic study of the Court's human rights jurisprudence having been undertaken till today, this work comes to fill the gap. Part I of the book presents the body of case law emerging after fifteen years of practice. Two feats must be acknowledged here. The feat of the Court itself, whose original mandate was, and is still in force any rate, that of a custodian of the norms of economic integration, not adjudication on human rights violation. The human rights case law of the Court was therefore born out of a sustained effort, not devoid of approximations and sometimes mistakes, all the more deserving of commendation, because unlike similarjudicial bodies, it had succeeded in ridding itself of what the author calls "a pointer of orientation for the norms relied upon", a single codified body of rules of reference. Then, the exploits of the author, who succeeded, in an effort of re-composition, in sustaining, by a consummate art of summary, a reconstitution of the various phases of the trial proceedings, and in retrieving and discussing in a systematic manner, the viewpoints of the Court. Part II is made up of a collection of studies whose themes centre on the major interrogations of international disputes on human rights : the status of the applicants, relations between the Court and other sister or rival courts of justice, the dialectics of relationship between the national judge and the international judge, etc. Part II closes up with a prospective reflexion on "The Future of the Court", where the author expresses his hopes, but also his serious concerns regarding what is to become of a court whose usefulness and cathartic function are not lost on him. The book is, as always, written in pure delightful language, and the analyses, nourished with the experience of the judge that the author was, are remarkable in richness, finesse and depth.

Acacia thorn in my heart
I started writing "Acacia thorn in my heart" after reading the book of a white South African woman about her childhood in the same region as mine but relating a completely different experience. She had maids, her father drove her to school and she played with real toys. I lived in the heart of the country, away from everything and had to walk five miles to go to school. I was born in Natal. My father rented a plot of land from a white owner to do market gardening. Although Indian families tended not to educate daughters, our parents decided that education was a priority for us. Despite financial difficulties, they were able to send us to school. We had to get up at five o'clock in order to catch the school train. In winter, as we were scantily clad, we shivered all the way to the station.

Like Man, Like Woman
Modern scholarship often discusses Roman women in terms of their difference from their male counterparts, frequently defining them as ‘other'. This book shows how Roman male writers at the turn of the first century actually described women as not so different from men : the same qualities and abilities pertaining to the domains of parenthood, intellect and morals are ascribed by writers to women as well as to men. There are two voices, however : a traditional, ideal voice and an individual, realistic voice. This creates a duality of representations of women, which recurs across literary genres and reflects a duality of mentality. How can we interpret the paradoxical information about Roman women given by the male-authored texts ? How does this duality of mentality inform us about gender roles and gender hierarchy ? This work analyses well-known, as well as overlooked, passages from the writings of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Quintilian, Statius, Martial and Juvenal and sheds new light on Roman views of women and their abilities, on the notions of private and public and on conjugal relationships. In the process, the famous sixth satire of Juvenal is revisited and its topic reassessed, providing further insights into the complex issues of gender roles, marriage and emotions. By contrasting representations of women across a broad spectrum of literary genres, this book provides consistent findings that have wide significance for the study of Latin literature and the social history of the late first and early second centuries.

Poet Nightingale Bharathiyar, life story of Bharathiyar
Poet Nightingale Bharathiyar Subramaniya Bharathiyar was born on 11th December 1882 in Ettayapuram, which is now part of Thoothukudi District. He died on 11th September 1921. Bharathiar was educated at a local high school where his talents as a poet were recognized even at the age of 11. He had a voracious appetite for learning ancient and contemporary Tamil literature and had a gifted intellect to derive astonishing truths from ancient poems. He was also one of the prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement. His national integration songs earned him the title "Desiya Kavi" (National Poet). His patriotic songs emphasize nationalism, unity of India, equality of men and the greatness of the Tamil language. It is a real and great pleasure for me to present this nice treatise on Poet Nightingale Bharathiyar to you. This is the first book that presents the topic to European readers working in the field of environmental protection — including members of civil society organizations, policymakers, national and international officers, law students, and legal and non-legal scholars. The book begins with detailed studies of France, Germany, Switzerland, India and Brazil. Thereafter, it highlights the impact of the French Environmental Charter on administrative law, corporate law, and compensation methods for environmental harm. Finally, the book takes an unprecedented look at EU law, whose legal standards are discussed in light of environmental constitutionalism. The various contributions are written either in French or in English, as befits the comparative nature of the subject matter. / Le constitutionnalisme environnemental constitue un champ de l'analyse juridique qui souligne les fondements idéologiques (comme le libéralisme ou l'écologisme) de toute constitution. A cette fin, il valorise les méthodes du droit comparé pour construire des principes généraux du droit protecteurs de l'environnement. Ce livre est le premier sur cette thématique qui s'adresse spécialement à des lecteurs européens actifs dans la protection de l'environnement, y compris les membres de la société civile, les décideurs nationaux et internationaux ainsi que les étudiants et les enseignants-chercheurs, juristes et non juristes. Le livre commence à explorer la thématique à travers l'étude des systèmes de la France, de l'Allemagne, de la Suisse, de l'Inde et du Brésil.
