Knowledge and Symbolization in Saint John of the Cross
The works of Juan de la Cruz contains numerous passages dealing with human cognition both ordinary and mystical. This study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the expression, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition.

Marriage and Divorce in the Plays of Hermann Sudermann
This study investigates Sudermann's plays from a socio-historical and literary-historical perspective. His plays are a response to a crisis of marriage. That crisis had its roots in the Romantic period and came to a head when the conservative Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch was introduced in 1900. Of particular significance is Es lebe das Leben (1902). The manuscripts of this play reveal that here Sudermann moved from a Realist treatment of marital difficulties to an exploration of the crisis of the realist literary system and a search for a Modernist treatment of divorce. His plays on marriage, divorce, courtship and the problems of single men and women constitute a sustained attempt to modify or at times radically to challenge the presentation of marriage in the Realist literary system.

Frontier and Utopia in the Fiction of Charles Sealsfield
This study examines the work of Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864), the Moravian-American writer, whose fiction marked the first serious literary treatment of America in the German language. More specifically, Sealsfield's work is discussed in the light of his experience in America and, above all, in the light of his change of identity from Karl Anton Postl - Moravian monk to Charles Sealsfield - American writer. It employs two concepts - frontier and utopia - to show how Sealsfield was influenced by the antebellum tradition in America, and how he, in turn, used the governing myths and symbols of his time to create an important statement about the relationship between ideology and power in the Age of Jackson.

Black and White Speech in the Southern United States
This study compares the pronunciation of the stressed vowel nuclei of black and white southerners interviewed for the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States. The informants from Maryland (two pairs), Virginia (seven pairs), and North Carolina (seven pairs), were all interviewed in the period 1933-1939 by a single field worker, Guy S. Lowman, Jr., and were matched as closely as possible for age, education, social class, and geographical proximity. The principal findings of the study are that systematic differences exist between black and white speakers in the pronunciation of the stressed vowels, on the phonic or subphonemic level. This is the same type of variation that is used to characterize dialect differences in the United States. The differences in speech, however, while systematic, are not categorical : i.e., there are no speech features examined that exist solely for black or white speakers. Another finding was that regional variation in speech was less apparent for black speakers than for white speakers.

A close analysis of these women defines their importance as exponents of key concepts in Zuckmayer's world view expressed in his essays, autobiographies, and fiction.

Full-Color Floral Designs in the Art Nouveau Style
E. A. Seguy was one of the foremost French designers of the first third of the twentieth century. He produced many splendid albums of designs over a long and distinguished career. This book reproduces in full color 40 plates from the two color portfolios called Les fleurs et leurs applications décoratives [c. 1902] - one of the high points in Art Nouveau design.
The 40 plates included here contain 166 decorative Art Nouveau patterns. Lacy and delicate interpretations of flowers ranging from arum and arrowhead to water lily and wisteria, these patterns offer such color combinations as a blue-petaled flower with green leaves on a mustard background, salmon-colored flower with robin's-egg-blue leaves on a beige field, and royal-blue flowers with golden leaves on golden stems silhouetted in light blue-green on a deep blue-green field. The colors in this volume are strong and bold, prefiguring such later influences as Persian art and the Ballets Russes. Twenty of the plates in the original portfolios contained ordinary realistic renderings of 30 plants, and they have been omitted from this volume.
The wide variety of flat designs are perfect for textiles, wallpapers, and packaging, and offer many ideas for mosaics, stained glass, rugs and bookbindings. Containing borders, circular designs, repeats, allovers, and "spots," this collection has something to interest everyone in the graphics field.

Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

"Friendship and Love in the Middle English Metrical Romances" groups together a representative cross-section of the genre, according to variants of love relationships, and to ideas of friendship. The horizontal and the vertical structure of the relatonship are tripartite. The horizontal stages are attraction, separation-testing-trial, and reunion, the vertical spheres are the personal, social/political, and religious. All relationships fail into two types, the restorative-concordant and the innovative-discordant. These are defined by the relative position of the partners in the social-political sphere of their relationship. The groups of relationship are defined by the initially more active partner : forward heroine, fairy mistress, forward hero, mutual love, married love ; friendship, lords and retainers. Surveys of the Insular understanding of courtly love, and of Caxton's prose romances, complement the findings.

Représentations de soi à la Renaissance. Representing the self in the Renaissance, Edition bilingue français-anglais
La question du sujet n'en finit pas d'alimenter les plumes des historiens, des philosophes et des littéraires. Si l'on n'affirme plus vraiment que l'individu est l'une des réalisations majeures de la Renaissance européenne, les études les plus récentes persistent à interroger les moyens d'expression d'une subjectivité fuyante. Dans leur continuité, ce volume collectif se propose de reconsidérer le sujet à la Renaissance à travers le prisme de la rhétorique, des formes et des genres. Il entend repenser cette notion problématique en examinant le rôle joué par l'écriture dans la représentation de soi, comme instrument herméneutique, comme outil stratégique d'affirmation ou de dissimulation, comme quête d'une identité d'auteur. Il s'intéresse plus précisément à l'image littéraire que construit le texte à destination du lecteur, aux modalités d'une hypothétique " subjectivité littéraire " , toujours difficile à identifier et à définir.

The Dramatic Encounter of Divine and Human Freedom in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar
This book surveys the major theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar from the perspective of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom. The first part examines Balthasar's early treatment of the question in the context of the analogy of being. The second part concentrates on his more mature work, the Theological Dramatics, with its understanding of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom in terms of a 'dramatic encounter' in which, controversially, human freedom is thought to actively participate in an ever-greater exchange of love in God. But this book is more than a survey. Observing the persistence of the 'analogy of proportionality' within the Dramatics leads the author in the third part to a critique of Balthasar's thought. It is argued that the continuation of the earlier perspective explains Balthasar's emphasis on the freedom of the individual to the neglect of social structures and their transformation. While the 'historical' as such is not neglected, as some claim it is, the focus is on the history of the individual and his or her relationship with God. It is therefore contended that Balthasar's theology of the Trinity is more concerned with 'interpersonal' relationships than truly 'social' ones and that this is what inhibits a fruitful dialogue with social theologies.

Chansons du figuier bleu / Songs of blue fig tree
Ce recueil rassemble quarante-sept chansons dont huit sont initialement écrites en kabyle. Elles sont toutes traduites du français en anglais. Quarante de ces chansons figurent dans la trilogie "Le murmure du figuier bleu". Elles évoquent tour à tour la nostalgie du pays natal, la solitude, la nature, l'amour, la tendresse, le jardin d'enfant, Venise, les voyages, la vieillesse, le temps perdu et bien d'autres thèmes encore. Ce sont des fenêtres, des lignes de fuite, des accès vers d'autres mondes quand celui dans lequel nous luttons ne nous apporte plus la bonne respiration. This collection gathers forty seven songs among which eight are initially written in Kabyle. They are all translated from French in English. Forty of these songs appear in the trilogy "The rustle of the blue fig tree". They evoke alternately the nostalgia for the native country, the solitude, the nature, love, tenderness, child's garden, Venice, journeys, old age, the lost time and many others themes still. They are windows, base lines, accesses towards other worlds when the one in which we fight does not bring us anymore the good breath.

Terre inculte. Penser dans l'illisible : The Waste Land
Que peut-on faire avec les textes illisibles ? Les oeuvres poétiques qui ont bouleversé la modernité ont imposé un nouveau régime de réception, dont on n'a pas encore pris toute la mesure. Déjouant la manière habituelle dont le lecteur synthétise la signification, elles réclament de sa part une attention spécifique. Laquelle ? Pour la déterminer, Pierre Vinclair propose de partir des textes mêmes. Dans un corps à corps avec le célèbre poème de T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land (1922), il avance strophe par strophe, élucidant les références intertextuelles, les ramenant au contexte de production, offrant une nouvelle traduction du texte et élaborant de nouveaux schèmes théoriques à même de rendre compte de son fonctionnement. Il parvient ainsi à comprendre ce que le poème attend de nous. S'ouvre alors un nouveau territoire de pratiques à explorer, qui définit une éthique de la réception.

Un thé dans la toundra. Edition bilingue français-montagnais

This annotated edition of ""Martin Luther's Small Catechism"" includes an extra appendix (in addition to the two already included in the original book) which provides an interesting overview of : Martin Luther's peasant roots, his education in pre-law, and how he was diverted from a law career to that of a monk-turned-professor and eventually, Protestant reformer, The role of the printing press in spreading the ""95 Theses"" quickly over Europe, catapulting Martin Luther to near-instant prominence in the religious dialogue of his day, The story of how Martin Luther colluded with a fishmonger to smuggle his future wife and her friends away from a convent, and Martin Luther's impact on the Protestant Reformation as well as modern religious thought. Martin Luther wrote the small catechism as an easy teaching tool for both individuals and families. Though penned close to five centuries ago, Luther's brief, clear summary of the essentials of Christian faith still ring true today. Topics covered include the Ten Commandments, the ""Creed"", the Lord's Prayer, and the sacraments of baptism and the altar. Ideas and instructions are also included for morning and evening devotions and giving thanks at mealtime. This little catechism, still widely used within the Lutheran Church, has gems of truth that many Christians will find to be both instructive and inspirational--regardless of denomination. Though few in words, it provides a wonderful explanation that has helped many to both learn the basics of Christian doctrine and apply them in a practical way to their lives.

"Contemplation" est un clin d'oeil à la pratique toltèque éponyme. Bien qu'il n'en soit pas explicitement question ici, certaines photographies s'y prêtent à merveille ! Je ne suis pas photographe, j'aime parcourir mes albums photos depuis presque 20 ans et certains clichés me plongent systématiquement dans une humeur différente et le monde change. "Gazing" is a wink to the namesake Toltec practice. Although it is not explicitly discussed here, some of the pictures are perfect for it ! I'm not a photographer, I've been enjoying looking at my photo albums for almost 20 years and some shots always put me in a different mood and the world changes.
