Raising Children Bilingually through the ‘One Parent-One Language’ Approach
Parents who come from different language backgrounds often hope that their children will be able to speak the languages of both their parents. In families where this is the goal, the ‘one parent-one language' approach (Ronjat, 1913) is widely used. The ‘one parent-one language' approach is relatively effective in promoting active bilingualism among young children in a society where there is little support for the minority language. However, there is a general perception that maintenance of the minority language into middle childhood and beyond is difficult as during this period children's contacts with the outside world expand and the input in the majority language increases. This book examines the sociolinguistic environment and the nature of parental input for children from Japanese-Australian families, who have been exposed to Japanese and English through the ‘one parent-one language' approach in Australia. The research on which the book is based identifies factors which account for successful and unsuccessful cases of Japanese language maintenance of children from those families. The major part of this study involves discourse analysis of the conversations between four Japanese mothers and their primary school aged children based on audio-recordings over a period of 21 months. This qualitative approach is complemented by a quantitative study interviewing 25 Japanese mothers about their children's language experience.

The symposium will focus on two examples of autodidacts from the nineteenth century, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918), as well as on the issues surrounding this notion today. The model of the autodidact appears as a figure that sheds light on our value systems and our patterns of recognition and learning in a world where different conceptions of culture coexist. Over two days, art historians, critics, writers, artists and teachers will gather to discuss autodidacticism through multiple perspectives. The term "autodidact" is generally used to describe someone who has acquired knowledge or skills through their own reading, observations and practice - an approach that is radically different from academic study in the arts, for example, that is validated by institutions. Yet what can we possibly learn if we sacrifice brilliant cultural values on the altar of all- round relativism, where everything is equally valid ? Faced with this relativism, what does one make of the canonical in a globalised and fragmented world ? What to make of an unlearning that cripples the authority of the keepers of knowledge ? These different "cultures of knowledge" presuppose diverse geopolitical realities that are worth interrogating.

On 'Nominal Non-Predicating' Adjectives in English
The study tries to show - on the basis of a large collection of data - that the labelling of adjectives such as environmental, nuclear, linguistic, urban as 'nominal, non-preicating' does not adequately account for observable language behaviour. 'Lexicalized' terms such as polar bear behave like unitary nouns, but otherwise these adjectives can well be found in predicative position ; they may also accept adverbial modification. Various syntactic tests demonstrate that attempts to explain predicative occurrences as resulting from ellipsis, from Head Noun Deletion, fail in a large number of cases. The conclusion reached in this thesis is that the adjectives in question cannot generally be considered 'attributive-only'.

Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

Combining the best elements of both geometric and Russian ornament, here are 374 of the infinite number of geometric designs that can be formed from a simple combination of lines with curves, selected from the work of the Russian designer Y. Chernikov.
The designs show dozens of different types of ornament and their intricate combinations and subdivisions: continuous and ribbon-like bands, enclosed spaces (panels), and unlimited flat patterns; networks, band motifs, diaper patterns; sectors, polygons and stars; squares and their subdivisions; octagons, triangles and hexagons; rhomboids and trapezoids; the circle and its subdivisions; etc. Designs range from simple black-and-white flat ornamentation to complex interweavings and tube-like maze figures. Some of the more important designs appear in full-page illustrations, while others are grouped together to show variations on a single element.
The peculiarly Russian influence on these designs is everywhere apparent-motifs stemming from the combination of primitive Russian folklore (seen in those delightful birds, fantastic animals and skirted figures found even today in Russian folk art) and the Byzantine style with the Christian influence brought to Russia by the Tartars between 1237 and 1480.
Others sec modern mathematics and its extension into op-art as the major inspiration of Chernikov's work, but whatever the source, the uses in today's art are almost limitless. Without further payment, permission or acknowledgment, you may use the designs in such media as textiles, crewel-work and needlework patterns, ornamental tiles, magazine, book and record cover art, greeting cards, and commercial packaging. The illustrations can serve equally well as a source of inspiration to the fine artist.

Manufactories in Germany
In eighteenth century Germany goods were produced in manufactories as well as by independent craftsmen and artisans employed by capitalists. The manufactories using tools and manually operated machines foreshadowed in many respects the factories of the nineteenth century. State and local support for the manufactories was aimed at reducing unemployment, maintaining military strength and securing foreign currency. Although not all manufactories were successful they provided a valuable heritage of industrial and commercial skills which were profitable to later entrepreneurs. However, those who - like Karl Marx - considered the manufactories to be a stage in the process of industrialisation have been proved wrong.

The Pondera Online project aims to collect and study ancient and medieval weights. No attempt for such a global corpus has been successful since the end of the 19th century. Dispersed objects, disparate information and imprecise data together constitute a major obstacle to a comprehensive approach. Therefore, the Pondera Online project is intended to fill a gap in the collection, standardisation, and processing of these archaeological data, thanks to an open access database (https : //pondera. uclouvain. be/). In this framework, four annual workshops have been organised in Louvain-la-Neuve between 2016 and 2019, bringing together specialists in Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic weights and measures. The flexibility and generality of the GLIM language encourage a different approach to statistical analysis, which stresses parameter estimation and model criticism rather than hypothesis testing. The GLIM package can handle most of the models that ecologists are likely to fit to their data, including log-linear models of count data using Poisson errors, logistic regression of proportion data using binomial errors, and a wide variety of models for the analysis of survival data. It also allows an extremely general approach to more familiar procedures such as analysis of variance, multiple regression and the analysis of contingency tables.
The book provides a practical approach to learning the rationale and methods of linear modelling, starting from absolute basics and progressing in simple steps to cover the critical analysis of experimental and observational data. Minimal background in mathematics or statistical theory is assumed, and the book is aimed at all ecologists front students to experienced researchers. Statistical modelling in GLIM is introduced through an extensive series of ecological examples, where graphical display, model criticism, model simplification, plots of residuals and tests of assumptions about error specification are explained in full. Salvatore COSTANZA, "Les oreilles ont dû vous tinter" . Fortune littéraire d'un thème folklorique de Lucien à Proust, RLC LXXXIX, n° 3, juillet-septembre 2015, p. 257-268. On examine ici la fortune littéraire d'un thème folklorique tel que le tintement des oreilles censé être un mouvement fatidique, d'où l'on pouvait tirer des pronostics sur l'avenir des individus. Il faut remarquer que ce motif est toujours employé chez les Grecs, Lucien, Aristhénète et dans la Recherche avec la même fonction. Au coeur d'une affaire amoureuse une femme en tant que médiatrice "révèle" à l'amant tourmenté par la jalousie que sa bien-aimée lui est toujours fidèle, qu'elle a sans cesse parlé de lui, donc les oreilles ont dû lui tinter. Il est intéressant de voir cet argument tiré de la superstition des tintements des oreilles, c'est-à-dire de l'otomancie, chez M. Proust, qui l'emploie toujours pour apaiser les troubles d'un amant abusé. C'est encore une fois le canevas déjà écrit par ses anciens prédécesseurs. Le but de cet article est d'étudier la réception de Charles Baudelaire et de Paul Verlaine dans l'oeuvre d'un poète du cercle de Stefan George, qui jusqu'à maintenant a été ignoré par l'historiographie littéraire allemande : Walter Wenghöfer. L'étude de reception est étayée et précisée par l'analyse intertextuelle et intermédiale de poèmes exemplaires. De cette manière, la contribution reconstruit la crise de la poétique symboliste dans la poésie allemande de la "fin du siècle" . En outre, il montre comment Wenghöfer - à travers la dépotentialisation esthétique des figures d'autorité symbolistes - anticipe la critique que l'expressionnisme allemand adresse au symbolisme. Gemma Bovery, roman graphique de Posy Simmonds se veut une parodie du roman de Flaubert, Madame Bovary, transposé à la fin du XXe siècle. Le narrateur, séduit par Emma Bovary dont il partage les aspirations romantiques, imagine que le destin de ses voisins, Charlie et Gemma Bovery, va se calquer sur celui des personnages flaubertiens et que la vie va imiter l'art, comme le souhaitait Oscar Wilde. Il s'apercevra qu'il s'est trompé. Ce roman invite à une réflexion sur la lecture et sur les rapports entre la littérature et la vie. L'adaptation cinématographique d'Anne Fontaine infléchit quelque peu le sens de l'oeuvre en conférant au film une unité de ton et de style que l'écrivaine avait voulu briser et en se rapprochant du roman français. We examine the survival of a folklore theme centered around the observation of buzzing in one's ears. Ringing was considered as a fateful movement and was comprised among the observations for divinatory ends. The relationship between the buzzing in one's ears and the belief that one subsequently became the object of other people's speech appears in Lucian of Samosata (second century A. D.) and in his later revival given by sixth century's epistolographer Aristaenetus. In this respect, a striking parallel is provided in modern French literature by Proust's Recherche. In every case a woman acting as mediator "reveals" someone that his beloved is always true to him and she was endless speaking of him. Consequently, something should have buzzed in his ears. It is interesting to remark, that such an argument drawn from superstition about buzzing in one's ears, that is, otomancy, still recurs in M. Proust with respect to abused lover's troubles. The way it is told and staged creates a dramaturgy of evil. The Machiavellian couple can be interpreted as a mere figure of love and evil which rewrites, in its Shakespearean version, the biblical narrative of the Fall while the couple of Laclos signals the deep deterioration of the ideal of love in a courtly meaning. The reception study is supported and clarified by the intertextual and intermedial analysis of exemplary poems. In this way, the contribution reconstructs the crisis of symbolist poetics in the German poetry of the < fin du siècle >. Furthermore it shows how through the aesthetic depotentialization of symbolist authorities Wenghofer anticipates expressionist criticism of the symbolist poetics. The narrator, seduced by Emma Bovary, whose romantic aspirations he shares, imagines that his neighbours, Charlie and Gemma Bovery, will experience the same fate as Flaubert's characters and that life will imitate art, in accordance with Oscar Wilde's hopes. He will realize that he was wrong. This novel induces us to reflect on reading and the relationship between literature and life. The film adaptation by Anne Fontaine distorts somewhat the book's meaning, giving a unity of style and tone that the English writer had wanted to break down in order to draw closer to Flaubert's novel.
