Londres, 2010. Les employés d'une puissante société minière sillonnent le sud de la ville à bord de fourgonnettes blanches pour kidnapper certaines cibles. Parallèlement à ces enlèvements, une nouvelle substance hypnotique, le "glow", est introduite dans les rave parties qu'organise Raf, jeune homme de vingt-deux ans. Au cours de l'une d'elles, Raf a le coup de foudre pour Cherish, une Américaine aux origines birmanes, mais celle-ci quitte la soirée sans laisser de trace. Quelques jours plus tard, il empêche deux hommes de la faire monter de force dans une fourgonnette blanche. Lorsque la jeune femme disparaît à nouveau, Raf se lance alors dans une enquête qui lui permet de découvrir peu à peu les liens qui unissent la société minière, les kidnappeurs, la communauté birmane de Londres et le glow.

Flou
Une photo floue est-elle une photo ratée ? En photographie, le flou a cette particularité d'être à la fois l'erreur la plus basique à éviter en même temps qu'une forme extrêmement difficile à obtenir - entre erreur technique primaire et ambition artistique. Pauline Martin a eu l'excellente idée de nous faire parcourir l'histoire de la photographie à travers le prisme du flou, depuis l'invention du procédé jusqu'à nos jours. On y découvrira que, selon les époques, le flou est tantôt considéré comme une valeur positive, tantôt négative. Dans un développement historico-thématique, les oeuvres présentées racontent l'évolution de cette forme dont les usages n'ont cessé de se modifier selon les époques et les pratiques, qu'elles aient été amateures, artistiques, scientifiques, ou encore de reportage. Jalonné de citations, le livre crée un dialogue entre les images et la manière dont le flou a été décrit par des auteurs et des artistes aussi divers que Charles Baudelaire, Julia Margaret Cameron ou Pierre Bourdieu, faisant ainsi valoir les enjeux du flou dans la perception du monde. Car comme le souligne Serge Tisseron dans son texte, "Si l'évolution rapide du monde nous rend anxieux, nous allons probablement préférer les images nettes, stables. Si, au contraire, nous sommes angoissés par une certaine rigidité autour de nous (...), nous allons privilégier le mouvement, l'aspiration vers l'avenir" . En préambule, le texte de Pauline Martin raconte l'histoire du flou, terme à l'origine dédié à une certaine pratique picturale avant de prendre le sens que nous lui connaissons. Son expertise est complétée par quatre textes : Martin Barnes se penche sur la valorisation du flou au XIXe siècle en Grande-Bretagne ; Martine Beugnet s'intéresse aux débuts du cinéma ; quand Florian Ebner et Michel Poivert se concentrent respectivement sur les années 1980 en Allemagne et sur la pratique contemporaine. Une contribution personnelle de Sébastien Lifshitz et une interview de Serge Tisseron complètent cet ouvrage de référence.

Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. She explains why in primate species-from chimpanzees and apes to humans-males seek to spread their genes by devoting extraordinary efforts to finding mates, while females find it profitable to expend more effort on parenting. Low illustrates these sexual differences among humans by showing that in places as diverse as the parishes of nineteenth-century Sweden, the villages of seventeenth-century China, and the forests of twentieth-century Brasil, men have tended to seek power and resources, from cattle to money, to attract mates, while women have sought a secure environment for raising children. She makes it clear, however, they have not done so simply through individual efforts or in a vacuum, but that men and women act in complex ways that involve cooperation and coalition building and that are shaped by culture, technology, tradition, and the availability of resources. Low also considers how file evolutionary drive to
acquire resources leads to environmental degradation and warfare and asks whether our behavior could be channeled in more constructive ways.
Why Sex Matters is a compelling work of biology, sociology, and anthropology and a penetrating study of the deep motivations that underlie individual and social behavior.

Paul Follot. Un artiste décorateur parisien
Paul Fallot (1877-1941) est un artiste décorateur en son temps adulé, aux cotés des Ruhlmann, Legrain, Bagge... II dessine aussi bien des bijoux que des meubles, de la vaisselle, des tapis, des objets de décoration, des luminaires, des damas, des papiers peints, des vitraux ou encore des ferronneries. Chantre de l'Art Nouveau, il contribue à l'invention du style 1910 et triomphe à l'Exposition des Arts décoratifs de 1925. En 1922, il prend la direction de Pomone, l'atelier d'art du Bon Marché, puis, de 1927 à 1930, celle de la section française de la firme de décoration britannique Waring & Gillow installée sur les Champs-Elysées. A travers ces magasins qui s'adressent à un plus large public que sa seule pratique privée, Follot exerce une influence décisive sur le goût de l'époque et fait rêver la France qui se meuble. A Paris, ses oeuvres sont conservées au Musée d'Orsay et au Musée des Arts décoratifs. Sa maison-atelier de la rue Victor Schoelcher, occupée depuis 2018 par l'Institut Giacometti et accessible au public, a conservé une large part de son décor originel. Léopold Diego Sanchez nous invite à entrer dans l'intimité de l'artiste et donne de la chair à l'histoire des arts décoratifs. Il évoque la relation du décorateur ensemblier avec Ida, une artiste allemande qu'il épouse en 1907, son courage dans les tranchées, son enseignement, les relations avec ses clients, entre autres avec le poète Paul Géraldy, le peintre Henry Caro-Delvaille, l'écrivain Claude Farrère, encore avec ses confrères et néanmoins amis, parmi lesquels Edgar Brandt, Maurice Dufrène, Jean Dunand, et la famille Poiret.

To mark the 100th birthday of Ursula Mamlok (1923 - 2016), Boosey & Hawkes Bote & Bock, in collaboration with the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation, is publishing a series of works from the composer's estate that were not published during her lifetime. Alariana, composed in 1985, is in many respects a "typical Mamlok" : The mixed instrumentation of winds and strings in distant registers makes for a transparent sound, the movement is airily polyphonic, and the five aphoristically short movements, together lasting about seven minutes, follow classical movement types in a contrastful alternation of characters. Of particular charm are a passacaglia over ostinato bassoon staccatos in the middle section of the fourth movement and the quiet ending of the fifth movement. The volume is centred on the voices of women belonging to various generations, religious faiths and social classes, and presents a range of possible life courses for women in the Alps during the ancien régime and the early 19th century. Focusing on complex lived experiences that have emerged froma gender-conscious reading of the sources, the contributions illustrate how migration led women to take on roles of responsibility, or to follow their husbands in their careers as artists, traders and businessmen. There also emerges a widespread literacy that is combined with practical skills andknowledge marked by biological, legal and religious preconceptions : features that permeated the communities studied, where ties of family, religion and patronage prevail upon the dichotomy of public sphere/private sphere.

PIONEERS OF REPRESENTATION THEORY: FROBENIUS, BURNSIDE, SCHUR, AND BRAUER
The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius ( 1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory.
They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-194 1) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration.
This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view.

RoferonÎ-A in Chronic Viral Hepatitis
Chronic liver infection due to viral hepatitis B and C is a major public health problem. Worldwide, an estimated 750 million people are carriers of these two viruses. Alpha-interferons, such as RoferonI-A, are currently the therapy of choice in chronic viral hepatitis B and C. They are effective in preventing disease progression and life-threatening sequelae : liver cirrhosis, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and variceal hemorrhage and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. On the other hand, discussion has been raised on the potentially enormous cost impact of these genetically engineered drugs in the treatment of an already costly disease. This study identifies and evaluates the long-term clinical and economic effects of RoferonI-A treatment in chronic viral hepatitis B and C over a time period of 10 to 20 years. Clinical and epidemiological data, as well as the detailed health care resource use and cost assessment, reflect the clinical and economic reality in Germany in 1993. A Markov model is used to predict the long-term clinical benefits of RoferonI-A therapy in terms of reduced morbidity and mortality. Based on this, direct costs, savings, and cost-effectiveness are analysed, including : RoferonI-A therapy initiation and follow-up, physician services, laboratory services, medicotechnical services, drug therapy, hospitalization as well as surgical interventions (liver transplantations).
