Inspired by the work of their colleague David Gascoigne, a group of scholars from the UK and France examine in this book the narrative strategies of some of the most interesting and important French writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Stretching chronologically from 1905 to 2005, the volume examines a wide variety of prose genres, from pornography to Bildungsroman to magic realism, as well as poetry. Michel Tournier figures in several of the contributions, emerging as something of a touchstone for many of the thematic preoccupations that are common throughout the period : values and authority, self and other, identity, spirituality, migration and exile, sexuality, the body, violence and war, and language. The authors also examine the flourishing of intertextuality, as well as the use of traditional forms, such as mythical structures and the ‘robinsonade', to undermine authoritative ‘métarécits'. Probing these themes and forms, and their metamorphoses across 100 years, the essays demonstrate a striking degree of continuity, linking writers as different as Apollinaire and Houellebecq or Valéry and Fleutiaux, and highlight the difficulty of dividing the period neatly into chronologically ordered categories labelled ‘modern' or ‘postmodern'.

World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

This study proposes to reassess the only translation in French of the novel Woldemar, published soon after it appeared in Germany but which quickly sank into oblivion. As the first attempt of Franco-German mediation by the publicist Charles Vandenbourg, who, at the time, had emigrated to Germany, it represents an enlightening example of the philological and philosophical stakes specific to the Franco-German intellectual transfer around the 1800s. The current article analyses the initial conditions and the publishing modes of the transfer, the translation strategy of Charles Vandenbourg as well as the revealing role played by the text in resetting the intellectual fields under the Directoire. Although it was a failure, this translation lead up to the penetration of Jacobi's philosophy in France, in a context of the philosophical debates opposing the Idealists and the Ideologists, later echoed by Madame de Staël. Vorliegender Beitrag untersucht die einzige französische Übersetzung von Jacobis Roman Woldemar, die zwar kurz nach der deutschen Originalfassung erschien, dafür aber schnell in Vergessenheit geriet. Als erster Versuch deutsch-französischer Vermittlung durch den nach Deutschland emigrierten französischen Publizisten Charles Vanderbourg stellt sie ein einleuchtendes Beispiel für den philologischen und philosophischen deutsch-französischen Transfer um 1800 dar. Die Studie befasst sich mit den Ausgangsbedingungen und den verlegerischen Modi des Transfers sowie mit Vanderbourgs Übersetzungsstrategien, wobei der französische Text die Neugestaltung des französischen intellektuellen Feldes zur Zeit des Direktoriums erkennen lässt. Dieser scheinbar gescheiterte Transfer nimmt also doch die Einführung von Jacobis Philosophie in Frankreich vorweg, und zwar im Kontext von Debatten zwischen Idealisten und Ideologen, an die Madame de Staël kurz darauf anknüpft. Although often neglected by Jacobi scholarship, Ferguson is mentioned and quoted approvingly on several occasions in Woldemar, and his implicit impact might reach even further. Initially, the ground for such an analysis is prepared by recalling the empirical evidence for Jacobi's reading of Ferguson as is to be found in the catalogue of his personal library and in his voluminous correspondence. Then, standing back from details of the reception, the wider question is opened, whether an appropriate appreciation of Jacobi's indebtedness to Ferguson might contribute to a correction of certain older images and clichés of Jacobi's thought. Niall Bond : Ferdinand Tönnies und seine Wechselwirkungen mit der französischsprachigen Welt Research on the institutional establishment of sociology in Europe has for the most part ignored exchanges between the earliest leading French and German sociologists. Yet our research in Ferdinand Tönnies' estate in Kiel has shown us that there were fruitful exchanges and mutual effects between Tönnies and Emile Durkheim, René Worms, Gabriel Tarde and other French-speaking sociologists and philosophers. At the same time, constructions and representations of national traits were obstacles to the fluid transfer of scientific interests and knowledge even across the borders of Europe. This becomes particularly clear when we read Tönnies' and Durkheim's writings during the Great War. Nevertheless, the transposing of Tönnies, who had resisted National Socialism, to other cultural contexts such as the French-speaking world made it possible to deal with his thought in a more neutral and objective fashion than was possible in post-war Germany, which had been traumatised by the recuperation of the term "Volksgemeinschaft" by the Nazis. Speaking is Everdine van Wijnbergen during the last months of her life ?; in a fictional diary she looks back on episodes out of her whole life, with or without Douwes Dekker at her side. This fictional (auto)biography of a historical person is also a confession, an introspection, a self-examination. In this novel three "Tines" appear side by side : the real Everdine, Multatuli's and Max Havelaar's idealized Tine, and Noordervliet's Tine. Nelleke Noordervliet gives a voice to this writer's wife ?; she brings her out of the shadows and offers a nuanced and complex image of her personality. The conference was organised by the Centre Camille Jullian - UMR 7299, which, on the occasion of ISBSA 15, celebrated 50 years of activity in the field of nautical archaeology. Un propylône introduit, dès le début du premier millénaire de notre ère, le complexe religieux de Médamoud, sur lequel s'appuie une enceinte datée d'Auguste par une stèle commémorative. Quoique l'édification de la porte ait été sans doute contemporaine de celle de l'enceinte et que le décor des embrasures ait été commencé sous ce règne, le monument est connu sous le nom de " Porte de Tibère ", les scènes et inscriptions de la façade et du revers, ainsi que trois scènes de l'embrasure nord-est, comportant les noms de cet empereur. L'écroulement de la porte, dans le courant de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle, a fait disparaître une part importante du décor avant le dégagement de l'éboulis par F. Bisson de la Roque en 1926. Un nombre conséquent de blocs, heureusement photographiés par Cl. Robichon en 1936, a encore disparu avant la fin du XXe siècle. En dépit de ces pertes regrettables, les scènes et inscriptions conservées, presque entièrement inédites, représentent un apport extrêmement précieux et révélateur pour notre connaissance de la théologie locale aux époques ptolémaïque et romaine, l'élévation du temple étant largement détruite, et des théologies thébaines dans lesquelles Médamoud et ses divinités jouent un rôle majeur. -- A propylon introduces, from the beginning of the first millennium AD, the religious complex of Medamud, on which is based an enclosure dated to Augustus by a commemorative stele.
