Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radio broadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. Suite No. 1 is an interesting hybrid that conveys the most modern compositional structure in the genre of light music. Schmid composed it shortly after the end of his year as a master student of Schönberg in Berlin. Like his other works of the time, its unusual instrumentation already shows an effort to move on from classical "high forms" and compose in looser structures, with the free use of the twelve-tone technique providing inner coherence. "Dance", "Waltz", "March" are linked by two inserted "Intermezzi" and introduced by an "Introduction". Not all movements require full instrumentation and are designed for solo rather than group performance. Burmese Silver from the Colonial Period
This stunning catalogue presents an exceptional collection of rare Burmese silver. Accompanied by detailed photographs and explanatory texts, this ground-breaking book proposes a new way of looking at Burmese silver. Names, dates, places, and stories - identifying the who, when, where, and what of Burmese silver has been the focus of publications on the topic. Are these questions the best way to understand silver, however ? Alexandra Green argues that they are not. Too few pieces provide reliable information about silversmiths, production locations, and dates to allow for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Instead, a close examination of silver patterns reveals strong links with Burmese art history reaching as far back as the Bagan period (11th to 13th centuries), connections with contemporary artistic trends, and participation within the wider world of silversmithing. The first European to write about Burmese silver was H L Tilly, a colonial official from the late 19th into the early 20th century. Tasked with collecting objects for various fairs and exhibitions, he took an interest in Burmese art, publishing articles and books from the 1880s onwards. While much of what he wrote was factually inaccurate and coloured by the prejudices and stereotypes common at the time, his two volumes on Burmese silver published in 1902 and 1904 contain pictures of pieces from the early to mid 19th century. These enable a reconstruction of how silver designs evolved as the country was absorbed into the Indian Raj, and British and other Westerners became consumers of local silver products. Tilly was also correct in his interest in silver designs. Green uses the visual information from his books to describe the continuities and innovations of designs found on silver from the mid 19th through the mid 20th century, and she places these trends within local, regional, and global flows of ideas. Many studies of Burmese silver have been plagued by a lack of understanding of the Burmese context. In contrast, Green examines silver from a local perspective, drawing on Burmese texts and information that allows for a nuanced view of the motifs, designs, and patterns that appear repetitively on silver pieces. Using Graham Honeybill's collection, formed over many years, as a basis, she explores how designs and patterns circulated around the country and were innovatively combined and recombined on pieces by silversmiths producing objects for Burmese, Western, and commercial clients.

Alors que les examens de mi-semestre approchent et que certains élèves réfléchissent déjà à leur avenir, un événement vient secouer la première F, l'occasion pour le Club des Volontaires de reprendre du service. Hachiman parviendra-t-il à aider ses camarades ? Peut-être. Malheureusement pour lui, aucune romance ne semble pointer le bout de son nez, même s'il est affublé de ses deux magnifiques compagnes, Yukinoshita et Yuigahama.

Raising Children Bilingually through the ‘One Parent-One Language’ Approach
Parents who come from different language backgrounds often hope that their children will be able to speak the languages of both their parents. In families where this is the goal, the ‘one parent-one language' approach (Ronjat, 1913) is widely used. The ‘one parent-one language' approach is relatively effective in promoting active bilingualism among young children in a society where there is little support for the minority language. However, there is a general perception that maintenance of the minority language into middle childhood and beyond is difficult as during this period children's contacts with the outside world expand and the input in the majority language increases. This book examines the sociolinguistic environment and the nature of parental input for children from Japanese-Australian families, who have been exposed to Japanese and English through the ‘one parent-one language' approach in Australia. The research on which the book is based identifies factors which account for successful and unsuccessful cases of Japanese language maintenance of children from those families. The major part of this study involves discourse analysis of the conversations between four Japanese mothers and their primary school aged children based on audio-recordings over a period of 21 months. This qualitative approach is complemented by a quantitative study interviewing 25 Japanese mothers about their children's language experience.

My Own Private Sketchbooks, hommage à Gus Van Sant et son film My Own Private Idaho, compile un très grand nombre des dessins réalisé par Jules dans des carnets en accordéons ces 4 dernières années. Ces carnets ont commencés à faire leur place dans sa pratique il y a longtemps. Pour l'artiste ils reproduisaient, dans leur sens de lecture, la déambulation d'un personnage comme un long travelling, une seule scène sans coupure. L'idée a continué et est devenue la compilation de toutes ses références, de toutes les images qu'il voyait et enregistrait quotidiennement dans son portable.

Mike Evans signe ici une biographie (très richement) illustrée, de référence, sur un groupe de rock anglais mythique : The Who. Emené par Roger Daltrey, le guitariste Pete Townshend, les regrettés John Entwistle (bassiste) et Keith Moon (batteur, réputé "mauvais garçon"), le groupe fait ses débuts en 1964 et est encore actif aujourd'hui, après bien des péripéties. La biographie est chronologique et les illustrations présentent les nombreux concerts de légende, enregistrements, vie privée, répétitions, couvertures d'albums, tickets de concert, destructions d'instruments, rencontres avec Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger... Le format est de 21, 5 x 27, 5 cm pour 240 pages et environ 175 illustrations.

"Je viens du Centre de tir. Quelques bavures pour commencer (fatigue, souffle court), et puis précision. Je ne sais plus quel poète américain a écrit ces deux vers : "Paradis calme/Au-dessus du carnage". C'est mon état d'esprit à l'entraînement. En haut, si j'arrive à penser le moins possible, ciel bleu, calme lumineux. En bas, explosion et larmes. Je me concentre sur le mot "mot". Je le vois là-bas, dans la ligne de mire. Il respire un peu, il grandit, c'est lui que je vise, que je veux toucher et trouer. MOT. Avec une lettre de plus, c'est MORT. En anglais, ça ferait WORD et WORLD. Je tire sur la mort, je tire sur le monde. Petite plaisanterie, mais qui fait du bien. Ma voisine de stand, Viva, me félicite d'avoir mis dans le mille. Je ne sais rien de ses activités, ni elle des miennes. On se sourit, ça suffit".
