Les inventeurs. Essai
What do Christopher Columbus, Reneke, Zénobe Gramme and Louis Pasteur have in common ? They were all inventors. Well fine, but who invented the crab's claw, the suction cups and the flight of squids or the proboscis of blood sucking insects ? Is invention intellectual fantasy, an industrial tool or a fundamental biological reaction ? How is this riddle to be solved ? Should we go through the list of inventions or inventors ? Is it a question of circumstances or motivations ? Who is in charge ? The Material or the Spirit ? In order to try to find a way of answering these questions, first a few very different inventors and their inventions will be presented. A few paradoxes emerge from this first part. Then we will devote an entire chapter to an exceptional inventor whose extraordinary work revolutionized how we now approach this topic. Finally, what can be said about all the inventions like the wings of birds or butterflies, the eyes of fish or insects, the leaves of trees or the social organization of beehives ? In these cases, man is not the inventor. There are countless marvels like these in the world around us. Can we explain them ? This will be the subject of the third part of this essay.

Italy and Tito’s Yugoslavia in the Age of International Détente
World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. Based on a wide collection of primary sources and documentary materials, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Adriatic region, a conflicted European space that had been affected by territorial disputes and ethnic strife for decades during the 20th century.

Numerical Methods for Wave equation in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. With 93 illustrations
This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations governing wave-like and weakly dissipative flows. The focus of the book is on fundamental methods and standard fluid dynamical problems such as tracer transport, the shallow-water equations, and the Euler equations. The emphasis is on methods appropriate for applications in atmospheric and oceanic science, but these same methods are also well suited for the simulation of wave-like flows in many other scientific and engineering disciplines. The text discusses finite-difference, spectral, finite-element, and finite-volume methods. Also included are additional chapters on semi-Lagrangian schemes, nonreflecting boundary conditions, and methods for the efficient solution of problems that include physically insignificant rapidly propagating waves. Throughout the book the author has followed a middle course between the theorem-proof formalism of a pure mathematics text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. Although there are no formal proofs, the essential characteristics of the various schemes are mathematically derived in a style familiar to physical scientists. Numerical examples illustrating the theoretically derived properties of the various methods are presented throughout the book to establish a concrete link between theory and practice. Both theoretical and applied problems are provided at the end of each chapter. Numerical Methods for Wave Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics will be useful as a senior undergraduate and graduate text, and as a reference for those teaching or using numerical methods, particularly for those concentrating on fluid dynamics.

Fra Francesc Moner’s Bilingual Poetics of Love and Reason
Fra Francesc Moner (1462/3-1491/2) is a Catalan author, who flourished in Barcelona during the second decade subsequent to the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile in 1469. Moner's extant production amounts to seventy-four pieces, a collection of poems and prose works of various genres, written in Catalan and in Castilian. A comprehensive study that profiles the creativity of a whole career is a rare occurrence for a Hispanic author like Moner, whose lifetime straddles the boundaries between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This book highlights the two main aspects of Fra Francesc's contribution : first, the resourceful bilingualism stemming from Moner's mastery of not only his native Catalan but also Castilian, the language that in the late 1400s kept gaining the ascendancy and prestige of officialdom throughout the Spanish realm ; second, the fashioning of an iconic text of subjectivity in the wake of the landmark innovations brought about by Ausiàs March, the Valencian luminary of the first half of the fifteenth century. By probing into Moner's poetics of love and reason, the reader catches a glimpse of an author engaged in intense soul-searching. Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy
The concept of mass is one of the most fundamental notions in physics, comparable in importance only to those of space and time. But in contrast to the latter, which are the subject of innumerable physical and philosophical studies, the concept of mass has been but rarely investigated. Here Max Jammer, a leading philosopher and historian of physics, provides a concise but comprehensive, coherent, and self-contained study of the concept of mass as it is defined, interpreted, and applied in contemporary physics and as it is critically examined in the modern philosophy of science. With its focus on theories proposed after the mid-1950s, the book is the first of its kind, covering the most recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the nature of mass and its role in modern physics, from the realm of elementary particles to the cosmology of galaxies.
The book begins with an analysis of the persistent difficulties of defining inertial mass in a noncircular manner and discusses the related question of whether mass is an observational or a theoretical concept. It then studies the notion of mass in special relativity and the delicate problem of whether the relativistic rest mass is the only legitimate notion of mass and whether it is identical with the classical (Newtonian) mass. This is followed by a critical analysis of the different derivations of the famous mass-energy relationship E = mc2 and its conflicting interpretations. Jammer then devotes a chapter to the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass and to the various versions of the so-called equivalence principle with which Newton initiated his Principia but which also became the starting point of Einstein's general relativity, which supersedes Newtonian physics. The book concludes with a presentation of recently proposed global and local dynamical theories of the origin and nature of mass.
Destined to become a much-consulted reference for philosophers and physicists, this book is also written for the nonprofessional general reader interested in the foundations of physics.

"Autopianographie" : écrire un récit de soi au piano comme on improvise un chorus, raconter une existence à partir du rapport entre quatre-vingt-huit touches d'ivoire et les dix doigts qui les ont approchées avec ferveur. L'auteur a beaucoup fréquenté les pianos. Ce n'est pas un musicien professionnel. Plutôt un pianoteur. Après avoir tenté, sur le tard, de "faire pianiste de jazz", il a renoncé. Pas tout à fait cependant. Son amour dilettante du piano a pris mille formes, passant par tous les stades d'une relation passionnelle et dévoratrice : élans, déceptions, ruptures, retrouvailles enflammées... Autant qu'un hymne à la musique de jazz comme forme de vie, ce livre est une méditation légère sur nos vocations secrètes, étouffées ou renaissantes. Etre un peu autre que soi, voilà ce qu'une pratique artistique, même modestement mise en oeuvre, nous donne à rêver. Tout amateur (l'amateur : celui qui aime) se reconnaîtra dans ces lignes - que son violon d'Ingres se nomme chant lyrique, dessin, théâtre, saxophone ou claquettes.

Des oeuvres minimales offertes par la bande dessinée contemporaine, Untitled (comic book) est sans conteste l'une des propositions les plus radicales et les plus généreuses. En prenant pour point de départ une grille de composition de bande dessinée (empruntée à Black Hole de Charles Burns) colorée à la façon d'un tableau de Piet Mondrian, et y introduisant un jeu de lignes presque enfantin, Frédérique Rusch génère une illusion de perspective qui bientôt autorise ses surfaces colorées à se retirer progressivement vers le fond de la page. Par ce simple mouvement de recul dont résulte une lente disparition, un modeste effacement, Untitled (comic book) passe de la couleur au monochrome blanc mais surtout crée son propre temps et son propre espace, autrement dit crée un récit — non dénué d'humour et de suspense. Untitled (comic book) a été initialement publié en 2013 par les Editions du livre. Epuisé depuis plusieurs années, cette réédition le rend enfin de nouveau disponible.

Si tu n'es pas Emma, repose immédiatement ce carnet ! Emma, je sais que cette histoire parait dingue. Maman et toi, vous devez vous demander où je suis passée et quand je reviendrai. Voilà pourquoi je te laisse ce carnet, au cas où il m'arriverait quelque chose et qu'on ne me revoit plus jamais. Regarde bien tout ce qu'il y a là-dedans. Appelle les numéros de téléphone. Va sur les sites internet. Mais surtout pas un mot à personne, sauf si tu as envie de finir impliquée jusqu'au cou comme moi. Ne t'en fais pas, je m'en sortirai (enfin j'espère). Après tout, c'est peut-être le début d'une nouvelle vie pour moi. Ce qui est sûr, c'est que plus rien ne sera comme avant. Appelle-moi. Bisous. Cathy.

Ca ne va pas fort dans la vie de Cathy depuis quelques temps : son père est décédé brutalement, la laissant seule avec sa mère dans un profond désarroi. Ses résultats au lycée s'en ressentent, elle a complètement décroché, au grand dam de sa meilleure amie Emma qui ne cesse de l'encourager, en vain. Et puis elle vient de se faire plaquer par son petit ami Victor, un Chinois d'une vingtained'années auréolé d'un certain mystère.

Book of Roy
De 1998 à 2005, Neil Drabble a photographié un adolescent américain, Roy, alors qu'il grandissait de l'adolescence à l'âge adulte. A un certain niveau, ce vaste travail peut être considéré comme un document fascinant d'une transition toujours convaincante. Un examen plus approfondi révèle d'autres nuances ; une collaboration, un partenariat, un portrait personnel et en même temps une image universelle de l'adolescence. Drabble a choisi de ne pas représenter les événements significatifs qui pourraient apparaître dans un album de famille ni les moments définitifs associés à la photographie documentaire. Au lieu de cela, ces photographies se concentrent sur les périodes apathiques et hors scène, les "moments intermédiaires" de la vie quotidienne. Cette focalisation sur les passages marginaux du temps ignoré situe le spectateur au coeur de l'adolescence, définie comme la période entre l'enfance et l'âge adulte, suspendue entre le désir (pour la promesse différée de l'âge adulte) et le regret (pour la perte de l'enfance comme refuge). En photographiant la même personne à plusieurs reprises et intimement au cours de leurs années de formation, un sens de la mise en miroir a commencé à émerger, réveillant quelque chose du soi adolescent de l'artiste, brouillant la frontière entre portrait et autoportrait. Neil Drabble a grandi dans un Manchester gris des années 1970, en regardant des émissions de télévision américaines et en rêvant d'un glamour perçu d'une adolescence vécu dans des endroits où les adolescents mangeaient de la pizza, buvaient le Dr Pepper, discutaient au téléphone avec des amis jusqu'à tard et conduisaient des voitures plutôt que en attente aux arrêts de bus pluvieux. Le processus de représentation de Roy et la collaboration entre le photographe plus âgé et le sujet plus jeune ont permis à Drabble de recadrer d'une certaine manière ses propres années d'adolescence et de s'engager par procuration avec des aspects d'une jeunesse américaine alternative qu'il avait convoitée outre-Atlantique.

TEGN - Book Two de Even Mehl Amundsen est le deuxième de la trilogie. Cet ouvrage compte 176 pages au format A4 y compris des pages bonus réalisées par d'autres artistes comme Kim Jung Gi, Paul Bonner, Iris Compiet, Fred Rambaud, Jonathan Mathiasen, Julio Reyna, Kate Pfeilschiefter, Mads Ahm, Mikkel Mainz et Milivoj Ceran !!! A propos de Even Mehl Amundsen : Concept artist norvégien, il a déjà travaillé avec les studios Volta, Blizzard, Riot, Wizards of the Coast et autres... Cela ne l'a pas empêché de travailler sur son propre univers : celui de TEGN. Quand il ne travaille pas, il voyage ou donne des masterclasses. La genèse de TEGN : Tout a commencé avec Facebook... Ou, plus précisément, la page de Even Amundsen. Pendant un an, il a posté une illustration accompagnée d'une histoire, et cela chaque jour ! Au final, nous voilà avec un univers complet, riche et illustré ! 366 jours, 366 illustrations, 366 histoires... Des petites, des plus longues... Le Livre 2 de TEGN est le deuxième d'une trilogie qui, complète, retrace toute une histoire qui a commencé par un simple dessin, un 1er janvier... "dessine quelque chose aujourd'hui, demain, après-demain. . ". Le conte ne fait que commencer, vous vous joignez à nous ?
