This text offers a clear, efficient exposition of Galois Theory with complete proofs and exercises. Learning GLIM will almost certainly change the way you do statistics. The flexibility and generality of the GLIM language encourage a different approach to statistical analysis, which stresses parameter estimation and model criticism rather than hypothesis testing. The GLIM package can handle most of the models that ecologists are likely to fit to their data, including log-linear models of count data using Poisson errors, logistic regression of proportion data using binomial errors, and a wide variety of models for the analysis of survival data. It also allows an extremely general approach to more familiar procedures such as analysis of variance, multiple regression and the analysis of contingency tables.
The book provides a practical approach to learning the rationale and methods of linear modelling, starting from absolute basics and progressing in simple steps to cover the critical analysis of experimental and observational data. Minimal background in mathematics or statistical theory is assumed, and the book is aimed at all ecologists front students to experienced researchers. Statistical modelling in GLIM is introduced through an extensive series of ecological examples, where graphical display, model criticism, model simplification, plots of residuals and tests of assumptions about error specification are explained in full. The reader is encouraged to work through examples while sitting at a computer, and all of the necessary data, along with numerous exercises and fully worked answers, are provided on a disk supplied at the back of the book.
GLIM for Ecologists is not a statistical recipe book; it informs and educates on the proper use of statistics in ecology, on experimental design and on how to get the most out of your data. Learning GLIM Will certainly bc worth the effort. It's not a question of finding out how to do the same old tests in yet another new statistics package. On the contrary, it involves mastering a powerful set of tools that were originally developed for professional statisticians, but which are now accessible to ecologists through the simple step-by-step approach adopted in this book.

Claude Gillot. Satire in the Age of Reason
This scholarly publication presents the work of the designer, painter and illustrator Claude Gillot (1673-1722). The first volume on the artist in English, it accompanies a major exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum that explores Gillot's inventive and highly original draftsmanship and places his work in the context of artistic and intellectual activity in Paris ca. 1700. The history of eighteenth-century French art under the ancien régime is dominated by great names. But the artistic scene in Paris at the dawn of the century was diverse and included artists who forged careers largely outside of the Royal Academy. Among them was Claude Gillot. Known primarily as a draftsman, Gillot specialized in witty scenes taken from the Italian commedia dell'arte plays performed at fairground theaters and vignettes of satyrs enacting rituals that expose human folly. The book will address Gillot's work as a designer, painter, and book illustrator, and advance a chronology for his career. Crafting a timeline for Gillot's life and work will clarify his relationship with his younger collaborators Antoine Watteau and Nicolas Lancret. Through an artistic biography and six chapters, each devoted to an aspect of his oeuvre, Gillot's role in developing quintessential rococo subjects is established. We follow Gillot from his start as the son of a decorative painter in the bishopric of Langres to his arrival in Paris in the 1690s, as the city and its secular entertainments flourished apart from the royal court at Versailles. Myriad opportunities awaited artists outside official channels, and Gillot built his career working in the theater and as a painter and designer long before seeking official academic status. His involvement with writers, playwrights, and printmakers helped define his sphere. Gillot's preference for theatrical subjects brought him critical attention, and also attracted talented assistants such as Watteau and Lancret. Gillot came to prominence around 1712 working at the Paris Opéra and as a printmaker and illustrator of books, lending his droll humor to satires. By 1720, Gillot was enlisted to design costumes for the last royal ballet, one of the final projects of his career. He died nine months after his most celebrated pupil, Watteau. The sale of his estate, which including his designs and many etched copper plates, provided material for printmakers and publishers and ensured Gillot's lasting fame among print connoisseurs. His oeuvre as a draftsman and painter, however, was largely forgotten until drawings and canvases began to emerge in the first half of the twentieth century.

Construire un feu. D'après la nouvelle de Jack London
Ce récit est court, mais son pouvoir est grand Un homme en quête de fortune ou d'aventure, perdu en plein milieu du grand nord, tente de rejoindre ses compagnons. Dans ce désert de neige et de glace, rien d'autre que lui et un chien... Confronté aux forces de la nature, au froid mordant, sa vie ne dépend que de quelques allumettes avec lesquelles il pourrait se faire un feu... Une histoire à l'intrigue très dépouillée et terrible, transcendée par un dessin qui nous fait ressentir le froid comme on ne l'avait encore jamais éprouvé en bande dessinée. En 2007, Chabouté avait entrepris d'adapter la célèbre nouvelle de Jack London : Construire un feu. Cette année, à l'occasion du centenaire de la mort de l'auteur de Croc-blanc et de L'Appel de la forêt, ce chef-d'oeuvre de la bande dessinée reparait dans toute une nouvelle édition avec couverture inédite et cahier graphique de 16 pages.

Le bloc-notes de Louise Tome 3 : I love London
Les vacances de la Toussaint sont enfin arrivées. Direction London ! Louise s'imagine déjà parcourant la ville avec sa corres' hyper-branchée et les Beatles en fond sonore. Mais le jour J, c'est un couple morose qui l'attend pour l'emmener dans une maison de banlieue remplie de décorations à l'effigie de la famille royale. En plus, sa BFF Candice a atterri dans une super-famille d'accueil, ELLE ! Au moment où Louise commence sérieusement à envisager de retourner en France à la nage, elle fait la rencontre d'un beau maître-nageur british. Et si tout n'était pas perdu finalement ?

Jack London. Arriver à bon port ou sombrer en essayant
Tour à tour jeune garçon fasciné par la mer, ouvrier, journaliste, mineur, révolutionnaire socialiste ou romancier, Jack London n'a répondu qu'à un seul appel : celui de l'esprit d'aventure. Ainsi, en 1907, sans rien connaître à la navigation, il entame, en couple, un tour du monde en mer, depuis San Francisco. Cela va sans dire, rien ne se déroula comme prévu.

Le Peuple de l'abîme. Un essai de Jack London
Durant l'été 1902, Jack London va descendre dans les bas fonds de Londres (l'EastEnd). Se fondant dans la population, il va côtoyer les sans logis et les travailleurs pauvres. Au travers de son récit, nous allons découvrir toute l'horreur de la misère, les bastons, l'alcoolisme, le froid, les passages à tabac, l'errance. L'évocation est brutale, terrible à bien des égards et visionnaire en ce qu'il perçoit déjà comment ceci va se terminer. London raconte l'exclusion cent ans avant les historiens. C'est un travail d'enquête qui ferait rougir tous les journalistes bien pensants d'aujourd'hui.

Garçon, un bock !
Quand il parle de la nourriture et de la boisson, comme quand il parle de l'amour, de l'enfant, de la vie en ville et à la campagne, Maupassant montre la contradiction à laquelle est en proie l'existence humaine. Tantôt ses nouvelles font sourire, tantôt elles emplissent de pitié ou d'horreur, parfois elles jouent des deux registres. Il arrive aussi qu'elles rejoignent le fantastique. Le présent recueil regroupe des nouvelles parisiennes (" Garçon, un bock ! ", " Imprudence " et " Le Gâteau ") où la brasserie, le souper fin, la réception mondaine sont typiques du Paris de l'époque. On y trouve également des nouvelles normandes (" Le Petit Fût ", " Le Vieux " et " Un Normand "), ainsi que deux récits qui montrent des aspects paradoxaux de la nourriture (" Le Rosier de Madame Husson ", " Conte de Noël "). " Je suis une espèce d'instrument à sensations. J'aime la chair des femmes, du même amour que j'aime l'herbe, les rivières, la mer. " Si Maupassant dit à quel point manger et boire peut être un plaisir, ce plaisir se retourne le plus souvent en questions ironiques ou pessimistes sur la nature humaine.

A Study of Conversion Among The Angas of Plateau State of Nigeria With Emphasis on Christianity
This is so far the most-detailed information on the Angas (Ngas), the largest ethnic group on the Jos Plateau, Nigeria. The book draws up a sketch of both the political and ecclesiastical history of the people. This is followed by socio-anthropological data about the people including a description of the traditional religion of the Angas (Ngas). The material serves as the necessary springboard for discussing the factors that were responsible for the conversion of the Angas (Ngas) people of Nigeria. The author concludes his thesis by giving a theoretical analysis of some of the theories of conversion per se and opting for a Hortonian theory as the most cogent. It is certainly an indispensable work dealing with conversion to and from any religion although in this case Christianity is used as a focus.

Walter of Châtillon's Alexandreis Book 10 - A Commentary
The final and most important book of Walter of Châtillon's Alexandreis is examined as a paradigm for both the compositional techniques and the meaning of the whole poem. These techniques are shown as being reliant on the medieval arts of composition, the strategies inherited from the Biblical paraphrasts and the strict discipline of classical epic hexameter. The author shows that Walter of Châtillon is not simply a classicising epigone of Vergil, but a master poet refining contemporary epic techniques and incorporating scientific and philosophic materials into an elegant moral diatribe against arrogance.

There has been a heated international debate over Salman Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses ever since its publication in 1988. The present work examines the ways in which this affair has developed. From the beginning, one can find strong rhetorical emphases ; these are shown to argue for maintenance of meaningful boundaries. The thesis of Kuortti's book is that on each side of the debate, people use similar language to argue for the sanctity of their convictions. This is evident especially in the opposition between the arguments for the sacrality of Islam and literature. In the international exchange, how could we then find more respectful ways of acknowledging that we are not that dissimilar from each other ?

L’art du diagramme : sciences, littérature, arts
Peut-on penser la genèse de l'invention par-delà les partages entre science et littérature ? Existe-t-il un "art de trouver" commun à toutes les activités créatrices ? Pour cerner ce moment, cet ouvrage remonte vers le stade "diagrammatique" de la pensée, avant qu'elle se matérialise dans des chiffres ou des lettres, pour se faire science ou littérature. Le diagramme est généralement décrit comme une opération de modélisation qui passe par la visualisation et la spatialisation pour expliciter quelque chose qui tient aux relations entre la partie et le tout. Qu'il représente le germe d'une oeuvre en devenir ou le premier jaillissement graphique d'une future théorie, qu'il anticipe un objet technique ou une oeuvre artistique, il facilite l'accès au sens et produit de la connaissance. Europe's Role in a South African Methodology
This work consists of essays on the so-called Middle Ages, seen from two perspectives. Writing from a sideline perspective, as opposed to the perspectives of historically mainstream theologies, in the first part of the book the author proposes a method for reading religious political texts with European philosophical insights but with a relevance for South Africa. This is done by comparing so-called Medieval texts with South African texts and situations within the demands of liberation, contextualisation, and communalism.In the second part of the book, from a female perspective, the author reevaluates the post-Biblical history of Christianity, criticising the terms "Patristics" and "Middle Ages". A South African women's theology is then offered as the outcome of the sideline perspective on the Bible, history and theology discussed in this book.
