The 'success' of a conversion depends on the group into which the convert is introduced. This study in early Christian ecclesiology from the perspective of house and family is guided by this sociological theory. Converts often met with problems in relation to their family. They joined a fellowship which conceived of itself as a family of brothers and sisters. It is the aim of this investigation to present the potential of the Christian fellowship to take the role of a new family in relation to its converts. This is done by means of historical material and cross-cultural comparisons. The relevance of the material for present-day churches and mission is considered.

This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Known primarily for the novel, Aus guter Familie, Gabriele Reuter has not yet been accorded the attention she deserves for her contribution to German literature in general and women's writing in particular. The precisely observed portraits of women in the novels discussed in this volume allow us to experience the complex interplay of societal norms and individual needs which shape feminine existence. Among the themes treated are misguided motherhood, the virtue of the unwed mother, the conflict between the will to be and the need to love and be loved, woman's role in the political sphere and a comparison of womanhood in two generations. One of the enduring pleasures of reading Reuter is the rich variety of female characters from the early part of the twentieth century.

Ernest Dossette - professeur de silence
Jean-Paul Colin, écrivain, auteur de nombreux essais et romans, nous livre ici "Ernest Dossette, le prof du silence" . Il raconte la métamorphose de ce professeur de français, latin, grec, au lycée Desnos durant les années 70. Celui-ci, un beau jour, devant ses élèves fait "aveu d'impuissance à relater des vérités, surtout littéraires" , et dit être aussi "faible et ignorant qu'eux" . Accusé d'être contestataire, à la fin d'une honorable carrière, il se verra prié de quitter l'éducation nationale. Et au lieu de se retrouver parmi les bannis, il se retrouve "rajeuni" dans une autre vie, où il découvre un véritable bien-être, sans plus chercher à "apporter la lumière dans ce qui n'est pas obscur" , ceci après avoir tenté de réinventer les cours "par un cheminement souterrain de la pensée" , c'est-à-dire, le silence, qu'il nomme chef d'orchestre d'instruments nouveaux, afin qu'aucun autre son ne vienne troubler les accords de ceux-ci. Ernest Dossette est-il bouffi d'orgueil au point de simplifier lui-même le monde ? Est-il un imposteur qui abandonne ses élèves à une soi-disant liberté, les condamnant à ne rien apprendre ? Un égoïste, un lâche ? Ou au contraire un courageux héros qui se bat pour affranchir le savoir du pouvoir ? Un vrai maître à penser qui incite "les jeunes tourments qui se cachent derrière les pattes de mouche" non plus à livrer leur part la plus secrète d'eux-mêmes, mais à comprendre que toutes vérités s'emboitent, gigognes sans fin ? Ou encore un professeur tellement épris de lectures et de littérature qu'il ne peut suffisamment en toute humilité retransmettre son envoûtement et en enseigner la magie ?
