Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) est un acteur majeur de la peinture gestuelle abstraite. Né en Chine au sein d'une famille d'amateurs d'art, il est formé à l'Académie des beaux-arts mais subit la guerre sino-japonaise, des tragédies familiales, la disparition quasi totale de ses oeuvres de jeunesse puis l'exil - en 1949 vers Taïwan et en 1955 vers Paris, où il s'installe enfin. Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) is a major figure in the history of gestural abstract painting. Born in China into a family of art lovers, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Then came the Second Sino-Japanese war, family tragedy, the loss of nearly all his early work, and finally, exile-to Taiwan in 1949, then, in 1955, to Paris, where he settled. This peaceful home witnessed the emergence of his tortured abstraction, devoid of obvious geometry, in which polychrome nebulae and maelstroms clash with violent chiaroscuro effects. Atmospheric, impossible to scale, each painting is an arena into which vision is projected and submerged amid a loss of spatial and semantic bearings. Steeped in painting both classical and modern, Asian and Western, Chu's art recreates the memory of a landscape, the dynamic essence of gesture, and the brilliance of light. This study, by placing his work in its context, using parallels, analogies, and other resonances, focuses on the singularity of his approach to abstraction, underpinned by the organic logic of the living world, by natural phenomena, forms, forces, and by their eruptive fluidity and cosmogonic revolutions. For many years, Chu remained a somewhat marginal figure, perhaps because of his reserved personality and his principled rejection of commercial strategies. Making the most of historical perspective, and in light of the artist's current recognition, this monograph sets out to define some of the aesthetic themes shaping his work and to help dispel some of the misunderstandings that have surrounded its reception.

Conflict and Classification
The dialogues of the mid-Victorian novelist, Anthony Trollope, are particularly permeable to modern psycholinguistic terminology as used by the Palo Alto school, especially by Paul Watzlawick in Pragmatics of Human Communication. We have classified Trollope novels into pleasant and unpleasant, using Barchester Towers and He Knew He was Right as respective examples of normogenic personal and social conflict, and schizophrenia-induced hubris. We have cast seven dialogues in graphic form : first according to the semiotic system by Carlos E. Sluzki and Janet Beavin, and then in the more comprehensive form of Klaus Muderbach's Interaction Notation. The question is posed whether a semiotic notation can show differentiation between psychotic and normogenic behavior, with reflections on how to define each.

The Reform of Port Royal
The monastery of Port-Royal has been a favorite subject of scholarly research mainly because of its involvement with the founder of Jansenism in France, St-Cyran, and its family connections with Antoine Arnauld who was the theologian of the movement. Less studied, but also significant, was the role played by the reform of port-Royal by Mère Angélique Arnauld, and its continuance by her niece, Soeur Angélique de St-Jean Arnauld d'Andilly, in the Cistercian reforms of the Seventeenth Century. F. Ellen Weaver, who completed her doctorate at Princeton University and is now teaching Church History at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, has traced the evolution of this important reform from its Cistercian beginnings to its emergence as a model of Jansenist ideal and practice, pointing toward its final enduring influence in French Catholicism as a mythic symbol of heroic resistance of a community to oppressive authority in the name of freedom of conscience. She has done a careful textual analysis of the development of the Constitutions de Port-Royal during the period in which the controversies were raging (1948-1684) to illustrate this evolution fromCistercian to Jansenist character of the reform, and to point out continuities which have semetimes been overlooked in the polemic against the Jansenists. This work represents a significant contribution to studies in the religious history of modern France in general, and to monastic and counter-reformation studies in particular. Une étude neuve, unique en son genre, sur la place tenue par Mère Angélique Arnauld à Port-Royal et sur le rôle joué par sa nièce dans les réformes cisterciennes du dix-septième siècle. L'examen approfondi des Constitutions de Port-Royal révèle l'idéal janséniste et fournit une contribution non négligeable aux recherches sue l'histoire religieuse de la France moderne.

In order to cope with health problems in developing or developed countries, means have to be tested before preventive, promotive and curative measures can be implemented on a nationwide basis by health authorities. Problems and constraints of such intervention trials seem to be similar in developing and developed countries although there are differences in the disease patterns. In the near future, especially the Asian countries will be facing similar health problems as the western countries, in addition to their present problems. Scientists from various Asian countries and the Federal Republic of Germany discussed intervention measures in the field of health delivery system, family planning, parasite control, mother and child health care as well as nutrition.

German-Irish Corporate Relationships
The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle
Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radio broadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. Suite No. 1 is an interesting hybrid that conveys the most modern compositional structure in the genre of light music. Schmid composed it shortly after the end of his year as a master student of Schönberg in Berlin. Like his other works of the time, its unusual instrumentation already shows an effort to move on from classical "high forms" and compose in looser structures, with the free use of the twelve-tone technique providing inner coherence. "Dance", "Waltz", "March" are linked by two inserted "Intermezzi" and introduced by an "Introduction". Not all movements require full instrumentation and are designed for solo rather than group performance. Based on extensive research this work gives a detailed account and a reappraisal of Edward Westermarck's thought. Westermarck had versatile relations to Victorian evolutionists (Wallace, Tylor, Spencer), and to British social anthropologists (Frazer, Haddon, Rivers, Malinowski) and psychologists (Shand, Sully). Westermarck was a pioneer of anthropological fieldwork, and his writings on the history of marriage and on the origin and development of moral ideas are modern classics. He was a transitional figure between evolutionism, on the one hand, and functionalism and structuralism, on the other hand. Westermarck's theories of exogamy and incest, and his notions of psychological ethics, moral emotions and concepts, and expanding morality were referred to by Durkheim and Freud, as they are referred to by present-day evolutionary theorists. The search for mankind continues to be of current interest.

In 1896 A. Sommerfeld published his famous paper "Zur Theorie der Diffraktion" in vol. 47 of the "Mathematische Annalen". His investigations initiated the study of boundary value problems in scattering theory. A long series of research works on general mixed boundary value problems sprang up then. Boundary integral equations together with the Wiener-Hopf method have been generalized and are now a basis for analytical and numerical studies by many mathematicians and engineers working on wave diffraction problems. Commemorating the centenary of Sommerfeld's paper, the aim of this conference is to join the experts and young researchers to present surveys and new results.

Labouring Lives
Labouring Lives unravels the huge changes which have so fundamentally altered the life courses of ordinary women over the past one hundred and fifty years, namely the changes in marriage and fertility patterns. Using dynamic data from Dutch population registers and analytical techniques from the life course approach, the book offers new evidence on women's changing position in the labour market, their role in pre-nuptial sexuality, and their contribution to marriage and fertility change in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1960. The author reconstructs the socio-economic and demographic worlds of different groups of working and non-working women, and by doing so she is able to locate the various groups driving the changes. Advanced statistical tools enable the author to analyse differences in fertility strategies, stopping versus spacing, employed by various social and cultural groups in the Netherlands. This book leads to conclusions which challenge a number of orthodoxies in the field.

Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.
