Knowing and teaching elementary mathematics. Teachers' understanding of fundamental mathematics in China and the United States
This book describes the nature and development of the "profound understanding of fundamental mathematics" that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such teaching knowledge is much more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts.
The studies described in this volume suggest that Chinese teachers begin their teaching careers with a better understanding of elementary mathematics than mat of most U.S. elementary teachers. Their understanding of the mathematics they teach and-equally important-of the ways that elementary mathematics can be presented to students, continues to grow throughout their professional lives.
Teaching conditions in the United States, unlike those in China, militate against the development of elementary teachers' mathematical knowledge and its organization for teaching. The concluding chapter of the book suggests changes in teacher preparation, teacher support, and mathematics education research that might allow teachers in the United States to attain profound understanding of fundamental mathematics.

Legal Friction : Law, Narrative, and Identity Politics in Biblical Israel tracks the mystery of narratives in the Hebrew Bible and their allusions to Sinai laws by highlighting intertextual allusions created by verbal resonances. While the second and the third parts of the volume illustrate allusions to Sinai narratives made by some narratives occurring in the post-Sinaitic era, twenty-three Genesis narratives are analyzed to show that the protagonists were bound by Sinai Laws before God supposedly gave them to Moses, anticipating the Book of Jubilees. Legal Friction suggests that most of Genesis was composed during or after the Babylonian exile, after the codification of most Sinai laws, which Genesis protagonists consistently violate. The fact that they are not punished for these violations implies to the exiles that the Sinai Covenant was unconditional. In addition, the author proposes that Genesis contains a hidden polemic, encouraging the Judean exiles to follow the revisions of laws of the Covenant Code by the Holiness Code and Deuteronomy. Genesis narratives, like those describing post-Sinai events, often cannot be understood properly without recognition of their allusions to biblical laws.

This study reconstructs Brittain's feminist theory, which mainly refutes assumptions made about women, supports companionate marriage, and demands the communal reorganization of child care and domestic work to enable a married woman to work outside her home. It compares her theory to her five novels. Doing so, it uncovers revealing feminist 'flaws', above all that marriage remains, the sine qua non for a woman's happiness. The study describes Brittain's way to the top as a formidable obstacle race, in which she constantly had to fight the men she loved, her children, her parents, and resulting domesticity in order to find time to write "the book of the decade". She reached her goal with the publication of Testament of Youth in 1933.

A central topic of the latest research in the philosophy of science is the question of what kind of relationship there is between the cognitive and social factors which underlie scientific knowledge. At present, this problem has manifested itself in a heated and still unfinished controversy between the proponents of artificial intelligence research and the sociologists of knowledge. By resolving the antagonism of these two positions, the book aims at developing a modular approach to an integrated philosophy of science which can handle the interaction between cognitive and social factors in a way which differs considerably from all current proposals.

Un mercenaire sur le retour, qui a été de tous les combats depuis la guerre d'Algérie, vivote d'expédients foireux jusqu'à ce qu'on le branche sur un coup : piquer un chargement d'armes à de jeunes militants gauchistes, qui rêvent d'armer leur "révolution". Evidemment, rien ne se passe comme prévu, et notre vieil animal se retrouve flanqué d'une très jeune militante, son exact opposé générationnel et idéologique. Contraints de fuir à la fois leurs anciens alliés et la police, cette cavalcade finira en bain de sang, offrant à cet original son chant du cygne.

Ses deux best-sellers (Y a-t-il une erreur qu'ILS n'ont pas commise ? et Décidément, ILS n'ont toujours rien compris), ont créé la polémique. This volume asserts that there was tacit cooperation in the Nazi extermination of the Jewish population of Europe by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Second World War. Although the Allies publicly recognized the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the London Declaration of December 17, 1942, the policies they pursued allowed the genocide to continue. They did so, the author claims, in three ways : (1) refusal to publicly and personally speak about and against the Nazi extermination of the Jews ; (2) refusal to commit even one soldier, one plane, or one warship to any forcible opposition to the "Final Solution" throughout the Second World War ; and (3) obstruction of Jewish escape from Hitler's Europe. This book explores the motivation for the policies Churchill and Roosevelt pursued.

Et tant que vous y êtes, vous pourriez aussi rétrécir son prix ? Mes poches sont aussi plates que cette requête". C'est fait ! Je commence déjà à être las de toutes les stupidités qui seront dites à l'occasion de ce livre. Correspondance
Pendant vingt ans, Flaubert et frères Goncourt échangèrent des lettres extrêmement précieuses pour comprendre, certes, les " créatures " contradictoires, changeantes et vulnérables, mais surtout les grands artistes qu'ils furent tous trois. " Qui révélera mieux que la lettre autographe la tête et le coeur de l'individu ? [... ] Seule la lettre autographe sera le confessionnal où vous entendrez le rêve de l'imagination de la créature, ses tristesses et ses gaîtés, ses fatigues et ses retours, ses défaillances et ses orgueils, sa lamentation et son inguérissable espoir. " Par ces quelques lignes de la préface de leurs Portraits intimes du XVIIIe siècle les frères Goncourt, grands amateurs et collectionneurs d'autographes s'il en est, révèlent tout le prix qu'ils attachent aux correspondances. Et de fait, celle qu'ils échangèrent avec leur ami, maître et rival Flaubert au long d'une relation de vingt ans (1860-1880), se révèle, en écho et en opposition parfois à leur célèbre Journal, extrêmement précieuse pour comprendre, certes, les " créatures " contradictoires, changeantes et vulnérables, mais surtout les grands artistes qu'ils furent tous trois, artistes qui considéraient la littérature comme un véritable sacerdoce et se percevaient comme les derniers représentants d'un art " pur ", sacré, à l'abri du mercantilisme et de la " blague " moderne : " La pure littérature, le livre qu'un artiste fait pour se satisfaire, me semble un genre bien près de mourir. Je ne vois plus de véritables hommes de lettres, de sincères et honnêtes écrivains que Flaubert et nous " (Journal, 9 août 1868). Cette correspondance est aussi éminemment instructive (et complète en cela de façon irremplaçable le Journal) pour la connaissance du champ littéraire sous le Second Empire et la compréhension des sociabilités d'écrivains, penseurs et artistes.

Une année à la campagne. Vivre les questions
J'ai souvent rêvé d'un livre complet, où il y aurait les oiseaux, les insectes volant dans la lumière du matin, les gouttes accrochées dans les toiles des araignées, le ciel changeant selon les saisons, l'odeur de la pluie et le bruit du vent, les cris des animaux, un livre où on sentirait la chaleur du soleil, le toucher léger des plantes, un livre où il y aurait les secrets visibles et invisibles du monde, et même des choses extraordinaires et rassurantes comme la recette de la tarte aux kakis. Un livre qui me donnerait le même bonheur que lorsque je lisais autrefois Virgile, assis près de la mer à l'ombre des oliviers (aujourd'hui remplacés par des immeubles). Un livre où la poésie serait comme une respiration, où le langage ferait sa musique familière. Il me semble que le livre de Sue Hubbell est ce livre-là. J.M.G. Le Clézio

Desert Isles & Pirate Islands examines the development of the island theme in nineteenth-century English juvenile fiction. The earliest island stories, Robinsonnades designed to teach both piety and natural history, gave way in mid-century to adventure stories with their primary emphasis on excitement and entertainment. By the end of the Victorian era, while elements of the Robinsonnade still featured in adventure fiction, the island story accommodated other traditions. It was particularly in the periodicals known as 'penny dreadfuls' that the island story became a lively and often lurid tale of pirates and their buried treasure. The book contains a detailed 505-item bibliography of stories on the island theme appearing in England from 1788 to 1910. Sixty-five illustrations reproduced from contemporary children's books and periodicals depict typical characters, situations and motifs in this fiction.

The objects of cultural transfers are innumerable. Their study is particularly important to understanding the medieval Norman worlds and their multiple interconnections with the Scandinavian world, the British Isles, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean. While examining the processes of transmission, reception, adaptation, adoption, or rejection, this book highlights how these dynamics influenced cultures between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Various examples of both material (embroidery ; clothing accessories ; iron artefacts ; coins ; manuscripts ; funeral monuments ; sculptures, etc.) and immaterial objects (craftsmanship ; literary models ; language ; religious and burial practices ; ideology of power ; oath-taking, etc.) are studied, including some emblematic ‘monuments' of the Norman worlds (the Bayeux Tapestry ; the mosaics on the floor of Otranto Cathedral). Particular attention is given to presenting these objects in a context in which their reinterpretation in different socio-cultural environments could be better understood. The book also questions the role and the significance of the actors of cultural transfers (aristocratic elites ; churchmen ; merchants ; craftsmen ; authors ; copyists ; etc.), considering their status or their function, as well as their aptitude to carry transfers. It sheds light on relations and networks that have been thus far relatively unknown, and on the circulation of models that consists of a multitude of objects and productions. Finally, it contributes to the exploration of the contacts between different populations and the construction of their interactions.

Polish Psychological Verbs at the Lexicon-Syntax Interface in Cross-linguistic Perspective
This book is a comparative study of Polish psychological verbs. The analysis concentrates on the lexicon-syntax interface of psych verbs, and constitutes an argument in favour of its strong dependence on event structure. The aim of this study is to show that the class of Polish psych verbs, as in many other languages, is not uniform. The analysed subclasses are differentiated on the basis of their causation and stativity. The marriage of those semantic traits and their structural representation is possible only if it is performed via event structure configuration, a layer which appears to underlie the conceptualisation of events.
