Practice and Problems in Language Testing 1
The First International Symposium of the Interuniversitäre Sprachtestgruppe at the Bundessprachenamt, Hürth, brought together a group of experts in language testing from a wide variety of backgrounds. This volume contains selected papers from the meeting and represents a broad range of topics in language testing, from Bernard Spolsky's paper on ethical questions, to Madeline Lutjeharms' contribution dealing with testing in a multilingual context, Nicolas Ferguson's computerized approach to oral assessment, and Günter Trost's and Horst Bickel's research into aptitude testing. The lively and often critical discussions following these and the other papers by Joseph Rohrer, Douglas K. Stevenson, Jan van Weeren, Wieland and Ulrich Raatz, Helmut J. Vollmer and Veronica Smith/Christine Klein-Braley are included, as is the panel discussion among several of the experts present.

Europe's Role in a South African Methodology
This work consists of essays on the so-called Middle Ages, seen from two perspectives. Writing from a sideline perspective, as opposed to the perspectives of historically mainstream theologies, in the first part of the book the author proposes a method for reading religious political texts with European philosophical insights but with a relevance for South Africa. This is done by comparing so-called Medieval texts with South African texts and situations within the demands of liberation, contextualisation, and communalism.In the second part of the book, from a female perspective, the author reevaluates the post-Biblical history of Christianity, criticising the terms "Patristics" and "Middle Ages". A South African women's theology is then offered as the outcome of the sideline perspective on the Bible, history and theology discussed in this book.

The Unparalleled Invasion is a rare political anticipation short story written by Jack London and first published in McClure's in July 1910 and later in the book The Strength of the Strong (New York, Macmillan, 1914). The story begins in 1910s China. Under the influence of Japan, China modernizes and has its own Meiji Reforms. In 1922, China breaks away from Japan and fights a brief war that culminates in the Chinese annexation of the Japanese possessions of Korea, Formosa, and Manchuria. Over the next half century, China's population steadily grows, and eventually migration overwhelms European colonies in Asia. The United States of America and the other Western powers launch a biological warfare campaign against China, resulting in the decimation of China's population. China is then colonized by the Western powers.

Frank Auerbach. The Charcoal Heads
Accompanying an exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, Frank Auerbach : The Charcoal Heads presents a remarkable series of hauntingly beautiful largescale drawings by the artist. The catalogue includes a new piece of writing on one of the drawings from critically acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín. This catalogue explores one of Frank Auerbach's most remarkable bodies of work - a series of large-scale portrait heads made in charcoal, produced during his early years as a young artist in postwar London. Auerbach (b. 1931) spent months on each drawing, working and reworking them during numerous sessions with his sitters. This prolonged and vigorous process of creation is evident in the finished drawings, which are richly textured and layered. Auerbach would sometimes even break through the paper and patch it up before carrying on. His heads thus emerge from the darkness of the charcoal with burning vitality, born of an artistic as well as a physical struggle with the medium. The process of repeated creation and destruction, of which these images bear the visible scars, speaks profoundly of their times, as people rebuilt their lives after the ruination and upending of the war. The exhibition will be the first time Auerbach's extraordinary drawings, made in the 1950s and early 1960s, have been brought together as a comprehensive group. They will be shown together with a selection of paintings he made of the same sitters ; for the artist, painting and drawing have always been deeply entwined. The accompanying catalogue - by Deputy Head of The Courtauld Gallery, Barnaby Wright, and with an essay by one of the greatest contemporary voices in the English language, Colm Tóibín - is the first publication to explore in depth this magnificent series. Tóibín spent several hours one afternoon in front of Auerbach's Self-Portrait (1958), which features on the front cover of the book, looking closely and taking notes. His essay is an account of his experience and offers new insights into the work and the nature of self-portaiture.

Ces récits de 1870 et 1871 évoquent, sur le mode du grossissement et de la pochade, les débuts journalistiques du jeune, voire très jeune, Mark Twain. Le canular et l'irrespect, la légèreté et la mauvaise foi dansante et espiègle caractérisent les tentatives journalistiques d'un garçon prêt à faire feu de tout bois. Quant aux prétentions littéraires de ces jeunes blancs becs imbus de leur (supposé) talent qui font le siège des rédactions, Twain les remet à leur place sans prendre de gants. This volume provides a comprehensive study of widowhood in Medieval Britain based on literary and historical sources from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. The book is divided into two parts : the first deals with the Anglo-Saxon period, the second with the Medieval period. Because widows shared certain preoccupations specific to their status, the two parts deal with similar topics : the fundamental role played by the Church in the doctrine of marriage, and the dominant male discourse about widows. Widows had a specific legal status : special laws affected their lives and their relationships with their children and other relatives. Much attention is consequently devoted to family structures and to the legal and social aspects of inheritance. The volume also explores the various options widowhood offered and the highly debated degree of independence widows had in their life choices.

Efficiency of Income Redistribution through Agricultural Policy
Since government can use manifold policy instruments at various levels, which influence various social groups, the evaluation of the efficiency of income redistribution is not straight forward. The study in hand contributes to the literature by first applying a multimarket framework to recent theoretical developments in transfer efficiency analysis. A three-stage vertically-structured model including the bread grains market as well as agricultural input industries and the food processing industry is developed and econometrically estimated. This model and standard welfare measures are used to judge the Austrian agricultural policy. It is revealed that in addition to farmers, downstream and upstream industries benefit considerably from agricultural policy. Using nonlinear optimization procedures, it is shown that the applied policy is not Pareto efficient. Applying an optimal policy instead of the current one could Pareto improve the social state by 1.7 billion Austrian Shilling.

Translation, Reduction and Equivalence
Contemporary epistemology and philosophy of science devote a central place to questions of the following sort : When are two conceptual frameworks equivalent ? Under what conditions is one scientific theory reducible to another ? This essay attempts to reach a clearer grasp of these issues by providing a logical analysis of intertheory translation and reduction. Taking first order logic as a starting point, several classical theorems on definability and interpolation are generalised so as to obtain a model-theoretic characterisation of some basic types of reductive relations between theories. This account is later extended by adopting a very general and powerful semantical framework inspired by abstract logic. In this setting it is shown how a richer class of intertheoretic relations can be defined, and how the structuralist approach to reduction, developed by Sneed and Stegmüller, can be critically evaluated.

Glasgow Urban Writing and Postmodernism
Alasdair Gray is one of the most innovative and imaginative writers to have appeared on the Scottish literary scene for many years. Gray radically challenges the vision of Glasgow and Scotland as defined by the traditional Glasgow novel. This study first looks back into the past of Glasgow writing to locate some specific novelistic models which Gray echoes in his fiction. The main part of the study then illustrates that Gray's literary attitude of looking beyond Glasgow (or Scotland) is much more helpful in "imagining Glasgow" than to follow the established and trodden paths of Scottish urban writing. In this sense, Gray proves that the narrative techniques characteristic of postmodernist writing are not only helpful in expressing the often quoted Scottish experience of fragmentation, but also in overcoming the artistic stalemate of the Glasgow novel.

Métissage in New France and Canada 1508 to 1886
This book deals with métissage in New France and Canada in the period 1508 to 1886. Métissage is understood as a syncretistic process of cultural, social and political encounter and mixture of ethnic groups that resulted from mixed marriages and relationships. Those led to the rise of the Métis people in North America, which were distinguished as French-speaking Métis and English-speaking Halfbreeds. The process of mixture began in 1508, when first Indians were shipped to France with the intention to use them as multipliers of French culture on their return to the colony. In 1886, the Act of Savages legally distinguished between "Indians" and "Metis", thus marking the beginning of a mixed-blood identity in Canada that was differentiated from neighbouring Whites, Indians and Inuit. The theoretical approach of the history of concepts is employed in the longue durée to show the variance throughout four centuries.
