What do Christopher Columbus, Reneke, Zénobe Gramme and Louis Pasteur have in common ? They were all inventors. Well fine, but who invented the crab's claw, the suction cups and the flight of squids or the proboscis of blood sucking insects ? Is invention intellectual fantasy, an industrial tool or a fundamental biological reaction ? How is this riddle to be solved ? Should we go through the list of inventions or inventors ? Is it a question of circumstances or motivations ? Who is in charge ? The Material or the Spirit ? In order to try to find a way of answering these questions, first a few very different inventors and their inventions will be presented. A few paradoxes emerge from this first part. Then we will devote an entire chapter to an exceptional inventor whose extraordinary work revolutionized how we now approach this topic. François Delaroziere, diplômé de l'Ecole des beaux-arts de Marseille, est le directeur artistique de la compagnie La Machine, dont les ateliers sont installés à Nantes et Tournefeuille. Depuis toujours, il explore l'univers de l'objet en mouvement et sa théàtralité, redessine les manèges et participe au développement de projets urbains. Constructeur de décors et d'inventions pour le théâtre de rue, il conçoit et dirige la fabrication, depuis plus de vingt ans, de grandes machines de spectacle. Parmi les plus emblématiques des pièces maîtresses de ces scénographies urbaines : le Géant, le Rhinocéros, le Petit Géant, les Girafes, la Petite Géante, le Grand Eléphant, les Araignées géantes... Il réalise de fascinants carrousels qui voyagent de ville en ville et font tourner les têtes, comme le Manège magique, le Beau Manège à Toulouse, le Manège d'Andréa, le Manège Carré Sénart et celui des Mondes marins. Il a aussi été scénographe associé pour la réhabilitation du Channel, Scène nationale de Calais. Il est l'auteur avec Pierre Orefice des Machines de l'île à Nantes. A La Roche-sur-Yon, il accompagne avec les Animaux de la place, le réaménagement de la place Napoléon mené par l'architecte Alexandre Chemetoff. Il crée à Toulouse la Halle de La Machine, une écurie de machines de spectacle notamment habitée par le Minotaure, et construit pour la ville de Calais : un Dragon des mers. Enfin, il continue de développer, avec sa compagnie, la création de spectacles dans les grandes villes du monde. François Delaroziere, a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, is the artistic director of the company La Machine, with workshops situated in Nantes and Tournefeuille. His work has always explored the world of moving objects and their theatricality, designing carousels and taking part in the development of urban projects. As a maker of sets and inventions for street theatre, he has been conceiving and overseeing the construction of large-scale theatre machines for over twenty years. Among the most iconic of the urban theatre performances are the Giant, the Rhinoceros, the Little Giants, the Giraffes, the Great Elephant, and the Giant Spiders. He is the figure behind wonderful carousels that turn heads as they travel from one town or city to the next, such as the Magic Roundabout, the Beau Manège in Toulouse, Andrea's Carousel, the Carré Sénart Square Carousel and the Marine Worlds Carousel. He was also the associate designer for the renovation of Le Channel, Scène Nationale de Calais. He is the creator, with Pierre Orefice, of Les Machines de l'lle in Nantes. In La Roche-sur-Yon, with Animals of the Square, he was part of architect Alexandre Chemetoff's renovation of Place Napoléon. In Toulouse he created La Machine's Hall, a stable of performance machines notably inhabited by the Minotaur, and he built a Sea Dragon for the city of Calais. He and his company continue to create performances in the world's great cities.

L'auteur nous fait arpenter la plaine du Haouz, dans le sillage d'un personnage qui s'érige déjà au rang de ces figures de la littérature, tels qu'un Giono a su les créer : le vieil Achraf, attachant et solitaire, laissera derrière lui un sillage de pierres lumineuses, ces pierres qu'il aura tant aimées, qui lui auront tout donné au soir de sa vie : elles sont le fil de ce beau roman qui mène le lecteur sur des chemins de poussière et de cailloux mêlés, d'où s'aperçoivent des oliviers millénaires. L'homme qui parlait aux arbres et caressait les feuilles de menthe, "ce velours vert recouvrant sa terre nourricière d'un manteau protecteur" nous livre ici sa philosophie serpentine. On le suit au fil des pages et l'envie saisit le lecteur d'aller le rejoindre là-bas, au pied des sommets de l'Atlas, aux portes de Marrakech. Un très beau livre, riche d'émotions et de sensations, qui invite à l'espérance et au voyage et fait plonger au coeur d'un univers où se croisent des femmes et des hommes d'une diversité époustouflante, d'Amina la créatrice de mode aux yeux de miel à l'habile Hocine, commerçant de village devenu millionnaire.

Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery
This is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian. Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'. The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe. Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware. Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Transport and Risk Communication
The process of transnationalization in Europe is reflected in the growth of transport flows and the rapid development of new infrastructure facilities. The highly transport sector confronts policy makers with pressing challenges because some major environmental problems are attached to transport. Decision making in the field of transport and the environment is very complicated because of the complexity of the infrastructures themselves and because of the involvement of local actors in the decision making process. The central task of this book is to show how regions and countries deal with this complexity and the new challenges, different ways in which three small European countries face the many uncertainties and controversies surrounding infrastructural policies. Economical constraints, institutional and cultural factors are shown to interfere with the debates on transport-issues and the environmental risks attached to them. Each case-study describes the national characteristics of the transport sector and analyses in some detail one of the major controversies which recently arised around infrastructural projects.
