Anthologie. The Hoochie Coochie
Fin des années 1970, le mouvement punk déferle sur la France. Une génération sauvage s'apprête à renouveler les formes artistiques, bande dessinée comprise. C'est au coeur du magma graphique underground le plus corrosif, qu'apparaît une signature toute de trames et de grattage composée, confusément bleu et rouge, violemment irrévérencieuse et bientôt évanescente : Imagex. Cinq ans plus tard, au milieu des années 1980, le paysage éditorial de la bande dessinée est un champ de ruines desquelles émergera une glorieuse relève, mais la comète Imagex est déjà repartie vers d'autres cieux créatifs. Dans son sillage, un total d'une centaine de planches et surtout deux albums - publiés chez Artefact et Futuropolis - qui marqueront plusieurs générations d'auteurs (de Mattt Konture à Dav Guedin). L'une des forces d'Imagex est de s'être érigé en porte-parole rageur d'une omniprésente et invisible enfance maltraitée. La présente anthologie est un florilège de planches, parfois inédites, regroupées autour de cette thématique et entièrement restaurées. Ce livre est la preuve éclatante de l'intemporalité du génie féroce d'Imagex. Commentaires de Jean-Pierre Mercier et Maël Rannou.

The Eastern Portal of the North Transept at Chartres
There exist greater differences of opinion with regard to the content and style of the Eastern Portal of the North Transept than any other transept portal at Chartres. Its archivolts have caused controversy and some remain unidentified. Katzenellenbogen (The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral) pays little attention to many elements of the portal and hence his interpretation of the portal as "Mariological" does not hold up in light of newly discovered iconographic relationships.

Arabian Leopard. Treasures of Alula
A celebration of a magnificent creature : the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr). This subspecies has distinct features that are the result of thousands of years of evolution, making it perfectly suited to the deserts and mountains of Arabia. Aurier, Symbolism and the Visual Arts

After The Last Ship
After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.

Lenz and Büchner: Studies in Dramatic Form
This study challenges Volker Klotz's widely accepted notion that the plays of Lenz and Büchner are seminal or exemplary open form dramas. This involves an account of the theory of the open and closed form, its origins in art-historical writings and German "Geistesgeschichte", its implications and place in recent criticism of drama. This leads to close studies of (a) the major plays of J.M.R Lenz (Der Hofmeister, Die Soldaten) the emphasis being on the dramatic structure, suggesting a rarely appreciated development in dramatic technique ; and (b) Georg Btechnique ; and (b) Georg Büchner's Dantons Tod (complexity of dramatic structure, presence of dramatic conflict, absence of open ending) and Woyzeck, where particular attention is devoted to the order of scenes and unsolved editorial problems, reference being made to the newly published facsimile edition of the manuscripts.

Proche de l'école de New York et du mouvement L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E sans pour autant être exclusivement tributaire de l'un ou l'autre groupe, Ann Lauterbach a publié de nombreux livres de poésie dont Under the Sign (Penguin, 2013) et Or to Begin Again (Penguin, 2009), retenu sur la liste du National Book Award, Hum (2005), If in Time : Selected Poems 1975–2000 (2001), On a Stair (1997), And for Example (1994) entre autres, de même qu'un livre d'essais, The Night Sky : Writings on the Poetics of Experience. Ann Lauterbach a longtemps travaillé dans le milieu de l'art, notamment pour des galeries prestigieuses. Elle enseigne aujourd'hui à Bard College dont elle dirige l'école d'art Milton Avery School of the Arts et où elle occupe la chaire Schwab Professor of Languages and Literature.

Knowing and teaching elementary mathematics. Teachers' understanding of fundamental mathematics in China and the United States
This book describes the nature and development of the "profound understanding of fundamental mathematics" that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such teaching knowledge is much more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts.
The studies described in this volume suggest that Chinese teachers begin their teaching careers with a better understanding of elementary mathematics than mat of most U.S. elementary teachers. Their understanding of the mathematics they teach and-equally important-of the ways that elementary mathematics can be presented to students, continues to grow throughout their professional lives.
Teaching conditions in the United States, unlike those in China, militate against the development of elementary teachers' mathematical knowledge and its organization for teaching. The concluding chapter of the book suggests changes in teacher preparation, teacher support, and mathematics education research that might allow teachers in the United States to attain profound understanding of fundamental mathematics.

Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla
Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla explains how Karol Wojtyla, philosopher, theologian, and Pope, tried to show how the sexual act, within the context of marriage, is an expression of love. After explaining how love as goodwill is the foundation of conjugal love, the correct relationship between love and justice is clarified. The negative dimension of the personalistic norm of Wojtyla is then critically examined. Conjugal love is explained in terms of conjugal beneficience based on conjugal benevolence. This love leads to total self-giving in each conjugal act. The procreative meaning of the conjugal act seems to be its most formal element (the soul of the act, so to speak); the unitive element is described as an essential property of this act, something which necessarily flows from the conjugal act which is open to life. Chastity is the virtue that allows sexuality to be integrated into a love which is truly personal and reflects Trinitarian Love.

Pass or Fail?. Assessing the Quality of Democracy in South Africa
In recent years, growing concerns over the strength of South Africa's democracy appear to indicate a population increasingly disillusioned and dissatisfied with the quality of its implementation. This book assesses the quality of democracy in South Africa after 20 years of democracy in order to ascertain whether or not this growing perception is valid. Since the inception of democracy in 1994 there have been countless procedural and substantive improvements in addressing historically entrenched political, social and economic problems ; however, there are serious issues that have emerged relating to the quality of democratic implementation in South Africa. Two existing analytical frameworks of democracy assessment, International IDEA's State of Democracy framework and Leonardo Morlino's tool for empirical research on democratic qualities, TODEM, are utilised to assess the quality of South Africa's rule of law and institutional capacity ; representative and accountable government ; civil society and popular participation ; and freedom and equality after 20 years of democracy. The book concludes cautiously that while South Africa faces many serious and threatening potholes in the road to a fully successful democracy, there is nevertheless much to applaud.

Quel sens pour l'interprétation ? Interpréter, c'est d'abord " donner sens " : en l'occurrence, donner un sens à quelque chose qui n'en a pas, ou qui en a d'abord un autre. Mais l'interprétation elle-même n'a pas toujours le même sens dans tous les arts (arts plastiques, musique, théâtre ou cinéma) : signification, traduction (qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ? ), perception visuelle, identification formelle (qu'est-ce que je vois ? ), performance, exécution (quelle est la " bonne " interprétation ? )... Quel système pour l'interprétation ? A première vue, l'interprétation est essentiellement d'ordre linguistique : c'est ce qu'on appelle souvent la " lecture " de l'oeuvre (qui pourtant ne se lit pas toujours comme un texte) et de son fameux " message " supposé. Pourtant, savoir interpréter une image, ou un rôle pour un acteur, ou une composition pour un musicien, tout cela suppose bien d'autres systèmes (iconique, gestuel, acoustique)... Quelle limite pour l'interprétation ? L'interprétation, issue d'une longue histoire, se retrouve au croisement de nombreuses disciplines (exégèse religieuse, herméneutique philosophique, psychanalyse freudienne, sciences juridiques, etc.). Elle court toujours le risque de la réinterprétation, voire de la surinterprétation. S'il n'y a pas de " vrai " sens d'une oeuvre, toutes les interprétations sont-elles permises ? C'est ainsi que l'interprétation de l'art devient un art de l'interprétation.

Victory will be next ! A Diary, 6th June - 10th August 1944
The story takes place in Brittany, focussing on Rennes and Redon, i.e. about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, about fifteen minutes by plane as the crow flies. The months of June and July 1944 were very difficult for the allied troops. They relentlessly fought to block German reinforcements coming from the West and the South, which resulted in constant bombing and machine-gunning of the rear boundary of the front line, the area where we were living. As civilians, we did not take part in the fighting and everyday life alternated between calm periods, on the verge of being "normal", and tragic moments of great tension. ''Victory will be next ! " is a set of notes written at that moment in time, day by day, by a fifteen-year-old boy. They are, obviously, fragmented, even a little naive, But they are nonetheless a testimony of a snapshot of history within the larger picture of WWII. They should be taken as such.

Legal Friction
Legal Friction : Law, Narrative, and Identity Politics in Biblical Israel tracks the mystery of narratives in the Hebrew Bible and their allusions to Sinai laws by highlighting intertextual allusions created by verbal resonances. While the second and the third parts of the volume illustrate allusions to Sinai narratives made by some narratives occurring in the post-Sinaitic era, twenty-three Genesis narratives are analyzed to show that the protagonists were bound by Sinai Laws before God supposedly gave them to Moses, anticipating the Book of Jubilees. Legal Friction suggests that most of Genesis was composed during or after the Babylonian exile, after the codification of most Sinai laws, which Genesis protagonists consistently violate. The fact that they are not punished for these violations implies to the exiles that the Sinai Covenant was unconditional. In addition, the author proposes that Genesis contains a hidden polemic, encouraging the Judean exiles to follow the revisions of laws of the Covenant Code by the Holiness Code and Deuteronomy. Genesis narratives, like those describing post-Sinai events, often cannot be understood properly without recognition of their allusions to biblical laws.

Mon et Tim, ont maintenant respectivement seize et dix-sept ans. Tim est en terminale et Mon en première, dans le lycée professionnel d'une grand ville du nord de la Thaïlande où ils sont depuis deux ans. Les relations entre les deux anciens amis sont au plus bas depuis que Mon s'est rendu compte que Tim sortait avec Nim, pour laquelle Mon avait eu un coup de foudre. Mais Mon va à son tour rencontrer une jeune fille, ce qui va progressivement changer son attitude. Il souhaite désormais remonter sur scène avec Tim, mais il craint que celui-ci refuse de reformer leur groupe... Ce troisième volume conclut la trilogie Juice, commencée en 2014 par Art Jeeno, le jeune prodige de la scène thaïlandaise. Dans Juice, il met en scène le quotidien d'ados thaïlandais sous pression, obligés d'être en uniforme au lycée et obnubilés par les filles, qui cherchent un exutoire à travers la musique occidentale. Dessinateur virtuose, Art Jeeno donne énormément de dynamisme à ses personnages volubiles et hyper expressifs, le trait vif et le découpage énergique étant au diapason de la véhémence de ces ados impulsifs.

L'Art Urbain au Zénith Sous la canicule estivale, les festivals ont fait le plein et l'Art Urbain s'en est donné à coeur joie. Avant que l'été ne tire sa révérence, un détour par LaBel Valette Festival est indiqué. Direction donc Pressigny-les-Pins (FR) où ledit festival livre le domaine du château de Valette aux street artistes. Cette année Lek & Sowat ont "pris" le château du XIXème siècle. Autre destination à visiter, la Biennale d'Art Urbain sur le site sidérurgique classé de Vôlkinger Hütte où les oeuvres habillent un site gigantesque et se diffusent aujourd'hui dans la ville de Volkingen (DE). Dernière destination plus lointaine, Los Angeles, où l'Art Urbain foisonne sous toutes ses formes dans cette ville protéiforme et tentaculaire. L'Art Urbain n'est pas toujours aussi accessible comme en témoigne la discipline de l'Urbex. Nous abordons ici des approches de l'Urbex au féminin. Soucieux de présenter des artistes au style singulier, nous rencontrons DFace et sa romance graphique, Stom500 et ses animaux en coupe et Monsta, l'héroïque fantaisiste. Dans des univers souvent dominés par des couleurs intenses, nous présentons Queen Andrea, virtuose de la bombe aux messages réconfortants, et Fanakapan sous influence pop. L'Art Urbain pour un été indien.

Le Street Art entre ombre et lumière L'été est l'occasion d'un road trip à la découverte de hauts lieux du Street Art et des tendances qui en font sa richesse. A la recherche du soleil et de destinations régénératrices, nous partons assister à l'éclosion de la bouillonnante scène Street Art d'Athènes, berceau de la démocratie, où le passé antique rencontre le militantisme pour un autre monde. Puis nous traversons la méditerranée pour accoster à Djerbahood, l'île des rêves, où le Street Art a transformé le village d'Erriadh, au patrimoine millénaire, en musée à ciel ouvert et en destination majeure pour les fans. Après ce plein d'UV, le projet Transition - Les Portes apporte une vague de fraîcheur avec ses 140 portes issues d'un HLM, aujourd'hui démoli, exposées dans les salles et les alcôves de l'Abbaye de Saint-Riquier et dispersées au profit du Secours Populaire. Avide de couleurs, nous faisons un flash-back sur la deuxième édition du Colors Festival, qui, cette année, a investi un immeuble désaffecté au coeur de Paris. Dans le Street Art, tous ne veulent pas être reconnus, voire connus. Nous explorons différentes facettes de l'anonymat dans le Street Art, où "être anonyme" peut attribuer de super pouvoirs : notoriété décuplé, don d'ubiquité, bouclier juridique... Dans ce numéro, nous rencontrons des artistes aux signatures singulières. De Bom. K et sa noirceur quasi-angélique, au pionnier et virtuose MODE 2 et à ELLE et sa poésie picturale colorée, nous faisons un grand écart et nous aimons cela. La mise en avant de la pluralité du Street Art passe aussi par INO et ses silhouettes historiques en noir et blanc réhaussées d'une giclée bleue et par Ludovilk Myers à l'abstraction joyeuse. Dans de trop nombreux pays, les indigènes, autrement dit les premiers occupants de la terre, se battent pour leur survie, leur identité et l'avenir de leurs enfants. Il y a encore, selon divers recensements, entre 200 et 250 millions d'indigènes dans le monde.
La menace qui pèse aujourd'hui sur ces peuples ne doit pas être confondue avec l'évolution culturelle normale des hommes. Dans la longue histoire de l'humanité, des tribus sont formées, ont émigré, se sont unies à d'autres, ont disparu. Mais, à notre époque comme jamais auparavant, des cultures distinctes s'évanouissent, pratiquement en l'espace d'une nuit. Depuis le début de ce siècle, plus de 90 tribus indiennes du Brésil ont ainsi totalement disparu. Les Chinois ont contraint d'innombrables Tibétains à l'exil, décimant ceux qui n'ont pas pu ou pas voulu s'enfuir. Au Soudan, les troupes gouvernementales ont déplacé de force des tribus totalisant 3 millions de personnes... La liste est longue de ces génocides au quotidien.
Pour chaque culture en danger décrite ici, des douzaines d'autres auraient pu l'être. Une chose est sûre : quel que soit le pays où nous résidons, notre vie est liée à celle des indigènes. C'est pour tenter de le faire comprendre que ce bel ouvrage leur rend hommage. Contre la nuit de l'oubli.

A la fois poète et dessinateur, Art Thug nous entraîne dans l'engrenage d'une poésie facétieuse et rythmée. La page blanche est son terrain de jeu pour endormir ses peines, faire rougir ses colères et étinceler ses joies ; il y évoque l'ouverture de l'âme, de l'esprit, au monde qui nous entoure et à ses richesses éclatantes ou enfouies. L'engrenage est ici synonyme d'interaction et l'aigreur d'une saveur douce et acidulée.

Quand le Street Art fait son cinéma : Le Street Art puise dans le 7ème Art un goût de la mise en scène et une inspiration sans limite en transfigurant des personnages mythiques. Blanche-Neige gagne en noirceur et perd en candeur avec Goin. La conquête urbaine systémique côtoie des cadres institutionnalisés. A Melbourne, l'essor spontané et désorganisé fait progressivement place à des règles et des codes entre graffeurs. Les fresques monumentales fleurissent aussi avec l'autorisation, voire sur commandes, des bailleurs de murs. Côté talents, nous sommes partis à la rencontre de Speedy Graphito, aux créations sans cesse renouvelées, mais aux styles si reconnaissables, et de Sowat, graffeur converti à la toile en quête d'harmonie figurative. Nous explorons aussi les univers d'Hilda Palafox et de David de la Mano, et le néo-muralisme de Hense. Pour ajouter une touche Pop, nous retrouvons certains de nos héros urbains sous les pinceaux de Greg Guillemin. Street Art, un voyage sans fin.
