One Artist on Five Continents
Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.

It is no period piece or marketable commodity meant to toe a conservative line, but a carefully woven creative transposition, which also raises social and gendered questions.

And then they discovered a teenage girl living in Brazil with a special affinity for traversing and moulding the data stream. They had discovered the first Googol. And the world was about to change.

Hilma af Klint. The Five Notebook 1
In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. Although Mme de Lafayette is acknowledged as the founder of the modern novel, her precise legacy has been understood only in relation to male-authored texts. However, she wrote as a woman, addressing issues that concerned women of her day, particularly the problem of the apparent incompatibility of sexual fulfilment and the institution of marriage. This study seeks to identify how La Princesse de Clèves was interpreted by three of Mme de Lafayette's most talented women successors and to show how their more sombre and subversive view of society was mediated in works of fiction which have strong affinities with the contes de fées for which they are well known. The novels of Mlle Bernard, Mme d'Aulnoy and Mlle de La Force are significant, not simply for what they tell us about themselves as women writers but also for what they reveal about the origins of the eighteenth-century novel.

Essaim N° 49 : Compter avec Lacan
Freud a toujours eu un rapport privilégié aux chiffres (dans les rêves et avec les dates par exemple), ne serait-ce qu'au départ, dans sa relation avec Fliess. Surtout, le comptage est inhérent à la notion même de répétition, fondamentale pour la psychanalyse, ainsi qu'à celle de "déplacement" (Entstellung), découvert par Freud dans le rêve : "faire passer la jouissance à l'inconscient, c'est-à-dire à la comptabilité, c'est en effet un sacré déplacement" (Lacan, Radiophonie). Lacan ne s'est jamais départi d'une référence au comptage et au nombre, et ce depuis le début de ses travaux. Citons "Le nombre 13 et la forme logique de la suspicion" ainsi que "Le temps logique et l'assertion de certitude anticipée" . Il s'agit de textes s'insérant dans une logique collective. Mais ce n'est pas pour l'opposer à une logique individuelle, au contraire. En effet, dans le temps logique Lacan affirme que le "collectif n'est rien, que le sujet de l'individuel" . Il s'agit précisément de trouver des modes de comptage appropriés au sujet tel que Lacan le définit, soit non identifiable à un individu car justement divisé, entre deux signifiants du langage dont l'un le représente pour l'autre. Un sujet divisé, en défaut d'une subjectivité (pour "se" compter un par exemple) sauf à se fixer à un objet pulsionnel dans un fantasme, un sujet divisé dans son rapport au sexe qui n'atteint pas le deux d'un rapport d'eux, dits hommes et dites femmes. Ces quelques remarques justifient la nécessité de modes de comptage spécifiques aux psychanalystes, à savoir l'introduction de nombres irrationnels, incommensurables au nombre entier 1, avec, de façon non exhaustive, le +1, ou un en plus, pour le trait unaire du sujet et le tour en plus sur le tore du désir par rapport à la demande ; d'où le nombre irrationnel dit nombre d'or pour évaluer la division du savoir et de la vérité relativement au sexuel, ainsi que le trois premier (réalisé avec le noeud borroméen) pour compter un, ou encore le quatre de la structure... sans compter le mystère de la question sur la possibilité d'un troisième sexe. On entreprendra de répertorier les différents modes de calcul de Lacan, leurs applications, leurs variations, le mode de penser (pensare = "mesurer") qu'ils mettent en jeu. Ce faisant, on pourra cerner la place de ces comptages dans notre propre lecture de Lacan et les interprétations éparses que nous en faisons, ainsi que définir l'usage de la notion de réel portée par le nombre et son lien à la topologie. Sans oublier la question : jusqu'où l'humain compte ? Jusqu'à 6 ? Au-delà ? Sachant que l'animal compte jusqu'à trois dans la jalousie. Question qui trouve une dimension collective avec la notion de cartel : composé d'un plus-un et ne comptant pas plus de six personnes.

Apprendre à compter : pas si simple ! Ce livre veut donner des clés pour comprendre : comment se fait habituellement cet apprentissage beaucoup plus complexe qu'il n'y parait ; pourquoi certains enfants, intelligents et motivés, se trouvent pourtant empêchés. Et bien sûr, dans ce cas, comment les aider. La construction de la numération repose sur des bases logiques - comme l'a montré Piaget au milieu du siècle dernier -, mais pas seulement. Les neurosciences cognitives ont profondément modifié notre appréhension des apprentissages dans ce domaine, ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives pour mieux comprendre les difficultés rencontrées par certains enfants, voire leurs échecs. Alors, faut-il avoir l'esprit " logique" pour réussir cet apprentissage ? La réponse est oui. Encore faut-il se mettre d'accord sur ce qu'on entend par "raisonnement logique" (et ses rapports avec "l'intelligence"), et en quoi cela serait particulièrement crucial pour apprendre à compter. C'est ce que nous faisons dans la première partie de ce livre. Peut-on être logique, "intelligent" ou même "très intelligent" et "nul en maths" ? La réponse est encore oui ! C'est ce que nous abordons dans la seconde partie. D'une part, les neurosciences ont découvert que les humains (comme de nombreux animaux ! ) disposent d'emblée de quelques capacités numériques génétiquement programmées, support des apprentissages ultérieurs. D'autre part, de nombreuses fonctions cognitives interviennent a différents moments de l'apprentissage - le langage, les fonctions spatiales, les mémoires, les fonctions dites "exécutives", etc. Qu'une seule d'entre elles ne soit pas au rendez-vous, et c'est l'édifice entier qui est compromis. On parle alors de dyscalculie. Pour cet enfant-là, mettre en évidence précisément la nature du trouble qui fait obstacle à l'apprentissage du nombre est bien entendu indispensable pour l'aider efficacement. Destiné au grand public, ce petit livre est illustré de nombreux schémas et exemples. Il dresse un panorama très complet des exigences et difficultés habituelles liées à cet apprentissage, mais aussi des troubles à l'origine d'échecs douloureux. Aussi intéressera-t-il les enseignants et tous les professionnels soucieux d'aider ces enfants en difficulté et, au-delà, de mieux comprendre comment l'enfant apprend à compter.

Nombres à compter et à raconter
Une collégienne, à l'occasion d'un exposé, tombe sur cette déclaration du mathématicien Kronecker (1823-1891) : " Dieu a créé les nombres entiers ; le reste est l'œuvre de l'homme ". Affirmée par un éminent spécialiste, cette supposée répartition du travail ne peut qu'intriguer une collégienne et susciter nombre de questions : ainsi, certains des êtres numériques qui déambulent dans ses livres de mathématiques et parfois hantent ses nuits d'avant interro seraient d'origine divine ? Et les autres non ? Et si c'est le cas, comment se fait-il que Dieu se soit attribué le plus facile, le plus difficile étant dévolu à l'homme ? Les nombres entiers, au-delà de leur évident intérêt propre, ouvrent sur bien des aspects passionnants et curieux, des mathématiques. Mathématiques nécessaires, obligatoires, et en tant que telles questionnées par tous, voire contestées, - à quoi ça sert ? -, à l'origine d'innombrables " pourquoi " et " comment " qui alimentent le dialogue dont est fait le livre.
