Drawn to Life. Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum
This beautifully illustrated catalogue presents a selection of exceptional seventeenth-century Dutch drawings from the Peck Collection in the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Featuring many previously unpublished and rarely exhibited works, the catalogue brings together examples by some of the best-known artists of the era such as Rembrandt, Jacques de Gheyn II, Samuel van Hoogstraten, and Frans van Mieris. The collection was donated to the museum in 2017 by the late Drs. Sheldon and Leena Peck. The transformative gift is comprised of over 130 largely seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch and Flemish drawings, establishing the Ackland as one of a handful of university art museums in the United States where northern European drawings can be studied in depth. Drawn to Life presents around 70 works from this exceptional and diverse group of drawings amassed by the Pecks over four decades. Featuring new research and fresh insights into seventeenth-century drawing practice, the catalogue and accompanying exhibition celebrates the creativity and technical skills of Dutch artists who explored the beauty of the natural world and the multifaceted aspects of humanity. The catalogue features a broad selection of scenes of everyday life, landscapes, biblical and historical scenes, portraits, and preparatory studies, forming a dynamic and representative group of Dutch drawings made by some of the most outstanding artists of the period, including Abraham Bloemaert, Jacob van Ruisdael, Esaias van de Velde, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, Pieter Molijn, Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade, Ferdinand Bol, Nicolaes Maes, Jan Lievens, Gerard ter Borch, Adriaen van de Velde, Nicolaes Berchem, and Cornelis Dusart. Key sheets of remarkable quality by lesserknown artists such as Guillam Dubois, Herman Naiwincx, Willem Romeyn, and Jacob van der Ulft, also comprise a core strength of the collection, and serve as a testament to the visual acuity of the Pecks as collectors. At the heart of the Peck Collection are several sheets by Rembrandt, including the sublime Noli me Tangere ; a beautifully rendered late landscape, Canal and Boats with a Distant View of Amsterdam ; and the superbly charming Studies of Women and Children, which was the last of Rembrandt's seventeen known drawings with an inscription in his own hand to reach a public collection. Situé à Los Angeles dans les années 1940, True Confessions met en scène deux frères irlando-américains, Tom et Desmond Spellacy : exemple typique d'ascension sociale d'immigrés de l'Irlande misérable. Tom, inspecteur de police, enquête sur le meurtre d'une jeune femme dont on a retrouvé le corps coupé en deux. Il s'agit de Lois Fazenda, dont le martyre est inspiré par celui, bien réel, d'Elizabeth Short, qui deviendra le célèbre Dahlia noir de James Ellroy. Desmond, prêtre ayant accédé au rang de monsignore, brigue l'archevêché de Los Angeles et mène une campagne active pour être nommé. Au cours de l'enquête, son frère Tom découvre qu'il a croisé le chemin de la victime... Leurs échanges sont des "confessions" mettant au jour d'une part les névroses sexuelles et les manigances financières de l'Eglise catholique irlandaise, d'autre part les coulisses de la pègre californienne et le rôle douteux de la presse. Ils présentent autant d'intérêt, sinon plus, que la résolution romanesque du meurtre, par ailleurs fort habilement amenée.

D'abord diffusés dans les journaux gratuits de la ville de Cleveland, ces strips atteindront par la suite jusqu'à 140 journaux du pays. Voici 200 de ces histoires rassemblées pour la première fois en un unique volume. Dans True Stories, on croise des illuminés en tous genre, pris sur le vif dans la rue ou dans des magasins, des scène du quotidien qui font mouche. Devoir réaliser un strip chaque semaine ne me manque pas vraiment. Ce qui me manque, c'est de me balader dans les rues de la ville à la recherche de gens bizarres. Ca a toujours été ce qui me plaisait le plus dans ce boulot " Derf Backderf.

Mais les mouvements des collecteurs de latex d'hévéa, aux revendications relayées par diverses institutions, et une opinion publique sensibilisée aux problèmes écologiques l'ont propulsé au centre des débats sur la gestion des écosystèmes forestiers. La question de sa place dans le développement régional est posée. Mais que sait-on de sa viabilité écologique ? Comment peut-il s'adapter aux changements écologiques et sociaux qui affectent aujourd'hui l'Amazonie ? Dans un contexte mondial de mise en culture de nombreuses espèces, de fabrication massive de produits de synthèse, pourquoi un tel intérêt autour de cette activité ? Comment l'extractivisme peut-il participer à de nouvelles formes de gestion de la forêt associant conservation et mise en valeur ?
Often presented as an archaic activity, extractivism, that is to say the exploitation of the forest products for commercial purposes, might be merely a feature of one of the various economic cycles that Brazil has experienced. However, movements of rubber tree latex collectors, with claims relayed by various institutions, and public opinion aware of ecological problems, have made it a central element of discussions concerning the management of forest ecosystems. The question of its position in regional development is raised. But what is known about its ecological viability? How can it adapt to the ecological and social changes that currently affect Amazonia? Why is so much interest shown in this activity in a global context in which numerous species are cultivated and massive quantities of synthetic products are manufactured? How can extractivism form part of new types of forest management combining conservation and development?

This substantial catalogue explores a remarkable collection of medieval European sculpture. Richly detailed with plentiful illustrations and original research, it is a notable contribution to medieval scholarship. The McCarthy collection comprises more than 150 specimens of medieval European sculpture, produced over a period of nearly 600 years. A testimony to the comprehensiveness of Robert McCarthy's interest in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, its geographical, chronological and typological breadth place it among the most important of its kind in private hands. Including a few early examples from Merovingian France, Anglo-Saxon England and Visigothic Spain, its holdings have a strong focus on Romanesque art, with over fifty capitals and other architectural carvings from Iberia, France and the Italian Peninsula. Some of these pieces are associable with such notable workshops as those of Gislebertus, the Master of Agüero and Compostela's Master Mateo, while a great number can be closely compared to anonymous works in major and provincial sites. Notable monuments like the monastic powerhouse of Cluny or the abbatial churches of Autun and Savigny are represented through important sculptural fragments - most published here for the first time. The transition to the Gothic style and the period of its splendour, particularly in France, are witnessed by an ample selection of statuary and architectural fragments - some traceable to such important buildings as Noyon cathedral and Paris' Notre Dame, and others, more loosely, to the artistic circles that gravitated around the great projects of the age. Freestanding sculpture in stone or wood, including a small but precious nucleus of Virgin and Child statuary and some Spanish polychrome figures, constitutes an interesting subset of the collection's late medieval holdings, as do some especially fine examples of Italian trecento sculpture. Enriched with outstanding photography by Barney Hindle and Mark French, entries aim to provide detailed stylistic, iconographic and contextual analyses, with special attention paid to comparanda in public and other private collections. This approach, complemented in some cases by petrographic analysis, has allowed the. authors to connect much of the material presented in these pages with specific buildings, workshops or regional schools, contributing to a better understanding of the pieces themselves, their original settings and their cultural and artistic milieux. This catalogue follows the publication of three volumes dedicated to Robert McCarthy's vast collection of Western miniatures and manuscript leaves (2018-2021), and is part of an ambitious project to document the entirety of his holdings - which also include notable selections of medieval ivories, stained glass and East Christian Art.

Il vient de mourir. Enfin. Je ne pensais pas qu'il irait jusqu'à cet âge. Durant neuf décennies et demie, il a mangé, bu et fumé sans modération. Toute une vie d'abus. Il a passé quatre-vingt-seize ans sur cette terre, et l'autre nuit il est parti, étouffé, incapable de respirer une fois de plus. Le monde sans lui n'est plus le même monde. La tonitruance s'est tue. J'ai de la peine en pensant au papa de mon enfance. Ces deux derniers mois, j'ai attendu sa fin comme une promesse de libération. Ce n'est pas le cas. Sa disparition ne change rien en moi. Je reste la même ou presque, sans doute un peu plus légère, plus sereine, comme si sa mort le punissait et que cette punition me rendait justice. Il est resté sept ans en maison de retraite avant de s'éteindre. Je ne suis pas allée le voir une seule fois. Je n'irai pas à ses obsèques. Chacun en pensera ce qu'il voudra, moi seule ai vécu ma vie.

Le credo libertaire, plein d'exaltation et d'espoir, la confiance en des valeurs autres que celles promues officiellement sont les produits d'une époque porteuse d'espoir et de confiance qui souhaitait changer le monde. Judith Malina (1926-2015) et Julian Beck (1925-1985) sont les fondateurs du Living Theatre, un théâtre qui interroge le rapport entre la fiction et la réalité, le théâtre et la vie. Engagé, le Living radicalise ses idées anarchistes et pacifistes en réaction au contexte politique des Etats-Unis et face à la guerre du Viêt Nam. C'est en découvrant Artaud que la troupe choisit d'associer le corporel à l'intellect, mettant en pratique les principes du "théâtre de la cruauté". Le 24 juillet 1968, la première de Paradise Now à Avignon est une révolution dans le théâtre : la plus accomplie de leurs performances représente l'apogée de leur création artistique, transgressant la frontière scène-salle et la bienséance bourgeoise.

Si Sydney s'en veut toujours d'avoir été la cause de la séparation de Ridge et Maggie, elle a du mal à accepter ce qui les lie encore. Quant à Maggie, elle a toujours été consciente que sa pathologie réduirait son espérance de vie mais doit-elle se refuser toute chance de bonheur ? Ridge et Sydney et Maggie continuent leur vie, ensemble ou de leur côté, au milieu de leurs amis, toujours aussi drôles et déjantés et dans une atmosphère musicale, celle du groupe de Ridge et son frère.

Road trip. Home is not where you come from. It is where you fit in.
D'abord, il y a cette fille solitaire, un peu paumée qui ne met d'énergie qu'à se saboter. Elle ne sait pas ce qu'elle veut, ne l'a jamais vraiment su. L'Amérique des livres et les grands espaces, l'attirent. Alors un jour, sur un coup de tête, elle se décide à partir en Road Trip. De l'autre côté de l'océan, il y a un type, un musicien peu bavard qui attire moins les cachets que la méfiance. Il porte toujours ce chapeau noir avec une plume de corbeau. Il passe le plus clair de son temps sur la route. Ils n'ont rien en commun, si ce n'est qu'elle semble voir des corbeaux partout depuis quelques temps... et pourtant. Leurs lignes de vie se croisent curieusement, avec ce goût doux-amer d'un quelque chose qui semble leur échapper. Nb : Une histoire, une main, deux plumes. Traduire, c'est trahir (Traduttore, traditore) disait déjà Du Bellay. Les dialogues de ce roman sont écrits en deux langues : le français et l'anglais, en fonction des lieux et des personnages tout au long de l'histoire. ILS NE SONT PAS TRADUITS. Un élan qui se veut refléter avec plus de fidélité la réalité des voyages et des rencontres en terres étrangères.

Issues in the Philosophy of Language Past and Present
In the light of contemporary perspectives a good deal of traditional philosophical thought can be read as relating to the issue of 'Language versus Reality'. The chapters of this book vindicate this claim ; bringing together thinkers different both in temperament and interests like Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Aquinas, Heidegger and Gadamer they suggest that some of their major tenets reflect conceptual assumptions concerning linguistic meaning and reference. In trying to both identify and elucidate the assumptions at stake the author shows, both historically and systematically, that some of the problems experienced in the past as well as much of our contemporary concern with the same issue form a continuous line and a common endeavour ; and they have not yet come to an end.

The Reception of Grabbe's Hannibal in the German Theatre
After publication in 1835, Grabbe's Hannibal was overlooked by the theatre until this century. Because the drama does not lend itself easily to stage production, a number of adaptations were printed : these are analysed and their merits and shortcomings evaluated. The history of all productions is then viewed against the background of Germany's political and cultural history from 1918 to 1958, examining in detail the approaches of such producers as Jessner, Martin, Schmitt and Schalla and their audience impact. This analysis in turn sheds light on essential qualities of Hannibal.
