The Search for Meaning in the Australian Novel
This thesis grew out of an epistemological interest centered on the search for meaning in literature, and out of a reading of Australian novels. Reaching beyond signification, the creation of meaning in literature refers to the significance a text acquires for the recipient's existence. The potential of this meaningfulness fluctuates between a process of explanation, of uncovering hidden meaning, and deception. Assuming that this range is best demonstrated in the literary treatment of negative experiences in human existence, of pain and suffering, we analyse how Australian novelists and critics set paradigms of meaning against the "Non-Sense" in experienced reality, who and what the agents of meaningfulness in Australian literature are, how they relate to each other and how they affect our reading experience.

She’s Leaving Home
This collection of essays, written by scholars from all over Europe, explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. Although all the chapters analyse writings in English, the volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions : from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons – to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosity – but ultimately each of them has to face questions of the definitions of home, belonging and otherness. Consequently, the essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The ‘protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

The Inculturation of Christianity in Africa
This book demonstrates that the encounter between Christianity and various African cultures gives rise to a number of problems for Africans who become Christians. It draws attention to certain traditional African beliefs and practices that seem to be incompatible with Christianity and create problems for Africans who embrace Christianity. Against this background it argues for the need to inculturate Christianity. It contends that in this exercise African Christianity can learn from the attempts at inculturation found in the New Testament times and in the early church. It offers examples of how the early church sought to make use of non-Christian categories of thought and elements in its articulation of the Christian message and in worship. It suggests a few areas of Ghanaian and African life where inculturation could and should take place. These include funeral rites, widowhood rites, child-naming rites, the rites of marriage, libation and christology. It concludes by offering some guidelines for use in the process of the inculturation of Christianity in Africa today.

Hymns: The Making and Shaping of a Theology for the Whole People of God
The theological potential of hymns has never been fully exploited. This study shows how hymns communicate theology and enable those without a formal theological education to enter into theological debate. A nineteenth century collection of English hymns and some contemporary Bemba hymns from the Zambian Copperbelt are examined and compared, within their theological, cultural and social contexts, to discover their response to death, judgement, heaven and hell. From this comparison and a study of how hymns are used in these churches, a model emerges whereby hymns can be used to make and shape theology. This model is observed in a Zambian parish and is also shown in practice in an English parish. Finally, there is a reflection on the implications of this model for Missiology and Ecclesiology showing, among other things, the need for a radical reassessment of the relationship between professional theologians and the rest of the Church.

From serious illness to natural disasters, humans turn to communication as a major source of strength to help us bounce back and to keep growing and thriving. Communicating Hope and Resilience Across the Lifespan addresses the various ways in which communication plays an important role in fostering hope and resilience. Adopting a lifespan approach and offering a new framework to expand our understanding of the concepts of "hope" and "resilience" from a communication perspective, contributors highlight the variety of "stressors" that people may encounter in their lives. They examine connections between the cognitive dimensions of hope such as self-worth, self-efficacy, and creative problem solving. They look at the variety of messages that can facilitate or inhibit experiencing hope in relationships, groups, and organizations. Other contributors look at how communication that can build strengths, enhance preparation, and model successful adaptation to change has the potential to lessen the negative impact of stress, demonstrating resilience. As an important counterpoint to recent work focusing on what goes wrong in interpersonal relationships, communication that has the potential to uplift and facilitate responses to stressful circumstances is emphasized throughout this volume. By offering a detailed examination of how to communicate hope and resilience, this book presents practical lessons for individuals, marriages, families, relationship experts, as well as a variety of other practitioners.

This book is concerned with the ethnic experience of Chinese secondary school children living in Northern Ireland. The author analyses two sub-groups of Chinese children : those with parents coming from Hong Kong and those with parents coming from Mainland China. The purpose of this study is to investigate how these apparently ‘Chinese' children feel about their ethnic identity. By drawing upon Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, and a cultural studies' approach to ethnicity and identity in general, the author examines the characteristics of cultural specificity and heterogeneity. Methodologically, the author has chosen an ethnographic approach. Prominence is given to the definitions, perspectives and voices of the children themselves by conducting open-ended, indepth and informal interviews and by doing so on an extended basis. The whole process continued for two and half years. Close attention was paid to the children's immediate circumstances, their parental occupations and their general social and cultural conditions.

Language and Transcendence
This study provides, in the notion of transcendence, a framework for interpreting Heidegger's thinking in regard to language, one of his major preoccupations. It both locates his thinking in its historical context, and, while still remaining faithful to it, frees it for discussion and evaluation in a horizon beyond Heidegger's own, by showing how heideggerian insights are crucial to the development of Karl-Otto Apel's linguistically-based transcendental philosophy. The full import of Heidegger's thinking for the central concerns and problems of philosophy is thus revealed by tracing how, in Apel's work, it is made both ethically relevant and capable of fruitful dialogue with Anglo-American philosophical discourse, represented by such thinkers as Wittgenstein and Peirce.

Maxime est une fille. Elle a onze ans, elle aime sa mère qui l'élève seule, les livres et savoir plein de choses sur tout. Dans un monde complexe, aimer et savoir la rassurent. Maxime sait des choses sur les baleines, sur les créatures sous-marines, sur son meilleur ami de toujours, Adam, et aussi, qu'elle ne sait pas tout. Par exemple, elle ne sait pas expliquer ce qu'elle ressent pour Chloé, ce sentiment nouveau et étrange, un émoi qu'elle ne comprend pas. Elle aimerait savoir si c'est ce qu'on appelle un coup de foudre et, comme elle est une fille et Chloé aussi, si elle a le droit de ressentir ça pour elle. Maxime ne peut pas poser ces questions à Adam, et sa mère n'entend pas ce qu'elle veut lui dire. Elle cherche alors des réponses dans les livres, des livres où des filles se prennent la main et où des garçons s'embrassent.

En apnée est un poème-livre de l'écrivain-performer Fabrice Melquiot, en collaboration avec la graphiste et plasticienne Jeanne Roualet. L'apnéiste tombe. Ivre d'air et d'eau, il consent à chuter. Il veut l'obscurité, le silence et le froid ; mourant à la surface du monde, il espère l'inversement des forces, conscient que la beauté pulmonaire s'estime en litres et en symboles. Douze ou treize litres, si le corps sait se creuser, s'ouvrir et s'enclore. Et puis l'amour du mystère, la folie sans saison des abysses, la mesure de soi. Il faut lire En apnée comme un passage au noir, une descente dans nos ruptures, nos dégâts, nos erreurs, nos échecs, pour, du monde, affirmer qu'on attend encore quelque chose : que nous devenions - celles et ceux de notre espèce - des athlètes métaphysiques, désireux de redessiner la surface en approchant le fond, "chargés de l'humanité et des animaux même".

A Columbia, sur la côte est des Etats-Unis, c'est la scène macabre que découvre le lieutenant Sandino. Officier intègre, c'est aussi un homme brisé depuis la disparition de sa famille. Pour mener cette enquête, il doit collaborer avec Megan Halliwell, l'agent du FBI qui a permis l'année précédente l'arrestation de Vernon Chester, un tueur psychopathe qui vient d'être exécuté. Très vite pourtant, il apparaît que ce dernier meurtre présente des ressemblances troublantes avec les crimes commis par Chester. Comment est-ce possible ? Tandis que Megan n'ose imaginer le pire, une erreur judiciaire, Sandino se concentre sur certaines incohérences. De discordes en silences la relation des deux policiers évolue, alors que chaque jour le tueur semble se rapprocher d'eux, omniprésent et insaisissable...

The Broker-Dealer's Liability for Recommendations
In today's capital markets the individual investor finds it increasingly difficult to gather, select and evaluate all the information that is required to make a reasonable investment decision. It is the broker-dealer who steps into the breach. The service he renders as a professional intermediary of informations culminates in investment recommendations. The threat of being held liable should ensure that a broker-dealer's recommendation is the result of a sound inquiry into the security and the customer's situation. This study examines the extent to which such a remedy is actually provided for under the U.S. securities laws and the so-called suitability rules of self-regulatory organizations (i.e., broker-dealer associations and stock exchanges).
