The facts in the relationship of Sadakichi Hartmann and Walt Whitman have never been clarified, particularly Hartmann's controversial interview with the poet and its publication in the "New York Herald", April 14, 1889. Of more importance was Hartmann's attempt to found a Whitman Society and the opposition of jealous Whitman associates who frustrated his efforts, although a Whitman Society was founded as the result of his initial work. Further, Hartmann's life-long interest in the poet and his various publications are not generally known. The introduction and edition of his writings will elucidate this literary association.

The pivotal work within the literary corpus of both Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Gabrielle Roy each, significantly, bears the title Terre des hommes. Saint-Exupéry encapsulates the results of a searching existential and humanist enquiry into a récit (1939), and Roy her similar findings into a thirty-page essay commissioned to introduce the 1967 Montréal World Exposition, itself named "Terre des Hommes". These pieces of writing, and the development of their key themes in other texts, lend themselves eminently to comparison for through Roy's essay we learn of her specific attraction to the Exupérian ethos of "l'homme" (self) and man's interaction with "la terre" (non-self). The present study aims principally to detect the presence of these essences in each author's work. In a subsidiary way it also endeavours to situate their rationals within a certain historico-literary context. Finally, an attempt is made to critically assess especially Roy's distinctive representation, through literature, of the self and the exterior world.

Written for an international audience, Priscilla, (White) Queen of the Desert speaks to the current crisis in queer rights and representation in the context of colonial nations. Focusing on issues of identity, but exploring concerns as wide ranging as morality, same-sex marriage, state sanction, families, and history, this book will appeal to students, activists and academics alike. Asking hard questions of queer rights movements, and the identity politics that often inform them, the book calls for a sustained engagement with the theorisation of queer racial identity and queer race privilege.

What are the implications of "change" as assessed from a Revolution's discourse point of view ? Did Revolution in its Eastern European mode "happen" only to make its once heroic agents "vulgar banana eaters" (Slavoj Zizek)? To what extent is/was Revolution part of the globalization process (Americanization)? The answer of this book is that it constituted a series of occurrences of both contingency and continuation. It is Romanian Revolution as a metonymic and creative space, incorporating the Event (here the city of Bucharest, December 1989-1990), the Memory (refiguration of identities), the Contact zone (the street as a public place), and the Local-Global (the East-West dialectics) that Revolution's Urban Landscape discusses in much detail. Through combining and analysing materials from both the local cultural field and the international press (witness reports, journalistic documentation, travelogues, fiction, academic publishing, graffiti, etc.), Raoul Granqvist demonstrates a number of aspects of Revolution's self-reflexivity, vitality and amorphousness. The Romanian book industry, through its absorption and introduction of new areas of popular reading (such as the American romance), embodies, this book explains, the basic instincts of Revolution towards openness and interaction.

This book examines the symbolist tales of Der Nister (1884-1950), a Soviet Yiddish writer who wrote before and after the Revolution in the USSR, and in Berlin in the 1920s. It offers various intertextual readings of the tales, determining the influence of the French and Russian symbolist movements and the Jewish folk and art-tale, and retracing the political and artistic background of Jewish modernism in the Soviet Union and in Berlin in the 1920s. Drawing on various literary theories, it also investigates the narrative structure of Der Nister's tales, based on the midrashic mashal-nimshal figure, as well as his sophisticated use of symbol and allegory. Finally, it examines the intrusion of the economics of modernity (the city, the masses, inflation) which leads to the disintegration of the system of allegorical symbolism, the collapse of storytelling, and Der Nister's final renunciation of symbolism.

The contributors to this volume of essays take a new look at nineteenth-century Scottish prose writing. Adopting diverse approaches, they discuss critically and in detail pre-Victorian and Victorian Scottish fiction represented by James Hogg, Sir Walter Scott, John Galt, Susan Edmonstone Ferrier, John Gibson Lockhart, Thomas Carlyle, William Edmonstoune Aytoun, George MacDonald, Robert Louis Stevenson, John Davidson, Samuel Rutherford Crockett, and James Matthew Barrie. The book's conceptual framework is built upon an analysis of different varieties of rationality. A conception of political rationality is elaborated. First, orientations of contemporary administrative theory and research are analysed from the point of view of that rationality. Next, the same viewpoint is applied to an analysis of an entity called the 'administrative welfare state'. This concept is used to cover the typical institutional shape of the leading highly developed countries until the 1980s. The strengths and the weaknesses of the contemporary 'new public management' reforms are also evaluated from the point of view of political rationality. Finally, steps are taken to define elements of actual reform programmes in the terms of the political rationality.

This study challenges Volker Klotz's widely accepted notion that the plays of Lenz and Büchner are seminal or exemplary open form dramas. This involves an account of the theory of the open and closed form, its origins in art-historical writings and German "Geistesgeschichte", its implications and place in recent criticism of drama. This leads to close studies of (a) the major plays of J.M.R Lenz (Der Hofmeister, Die Soldaten) the emphasis being on the dramatic structure, suggesting a rarely appreciated development in dramatic technique ; and (b) Georg Btechnique ; and (b) Georg Büchner's Dantons Tod (complexity of dramatic structure, presence of dramatic conflict, absence of open ending) and Woyzeck, where particular attention is devoted to the order of scenes and unsolved editorial problems, reference being made to the newly published facsimile edition of the manuscripts.

L'une et l'autre, hors la loi, recèle une menace insurrectionnelle que la souveraineté politique (celle du capitaine Vere), pour se maintenir, doit réprimer. Le jugement de Vere - l'exécution de Budd -, s'exerçant au nom de la violence légale, met en oeuvre une stratégie qui enrôle la puissance cohésive d'Eros au service de la loi mar- tiale, dans une opération qui vise à naturaliser et à sublimer la violence arbitraire de l'état d'exception. Against a backdrop of war and mutiny, Billy Budd, Sailor can be read as a juridical drama staging the conflict between the exceptional violence of utmost innocence (Billy's) and that of absolute evil (Claggart's). Both infringe the law and both are pregnant with a threat of insurrection which political sovereignty (captain Vere's) must eradicate for the sake of its own integrity. Vere's sentence condemning Budd to death in the name of legal violence partakes of a complex strategy whose aim is to summon Eros's cohesive power in order to buttress martial law and to naturalize and sublimate the arbitrary violence of the state of exception. Michael GILLESPIE The Picture of Dorian Gray as a Postmodern Work Despite the wide range of interpretative approaches to The Picture of Dorian Gray that have appeared since its publication, all seem to assume that a particular set of values or beliefs-traditional Judeo-Christian morality, cultural attitudes, nationa- list dispositions, or queer inclinations-is integral to Wilde's narrative. This essay challenges the value of any metaphysical reading by asserting that the world of The Picture of Dorian Gray is delineated in strictly physical terms and so is best as a Post-Modern work. Through close reading, this essay shows key points in the narrative that highlight the absence of all values and that underscore the view that characters behave according to strictly material considerations. In the end the essay concludes that Wilde presents a world as grim and bleak as anything found in the works of Samuel Beckett. NASSAAR Hidden Meanings and the Failure of Art : Wilde's A Woman of No Importance Complexity is the hallmark of Oscar Wilde's mature works. From "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" through The Picture of Dorian Gray and Salome, there is an incre- dible amount of complexity wherever we look. When we reach A Woman of No Importance, however, the complexity apparently disappears, and the play is usually read as a conventional Victorian melodrama. A deeper look at the play reveals veiled references to Farquhar, Hawthorne, Arbuthnot and Baudelaire. The refe- rences point to a deep hidden meaning in the play. Traced carefully, they reveal Mrs. Arbuthnot as a deeply corrupt woman who is unaware of the dark recesses of evil within herself. Unfortunately, this suppressed undercurrent of meaning is too dee- ply buried and very difficult to detect, which has led people in general to accept the surface meaning as the true one. The play is thus a stylistic failure, although its veiled thematic content is quite profound. La complexité caractérise les oeuvres d'Oscar Wilde, de "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" jusqu'à The Picture of Dorian Gray et Salome, alors que, dans A Woman of No Importance, celle-ci paraît moins évidente, la pièce étant le plus souvent lue comme un mélodrame victorien conventionnel. Cependant, si on analyse la pièce de plus près, on y décèle des références voilées à Farquhar, Hawthorne, Arbuthnot et Baudelaire. Nathalie SAUDO-WELBY Narratorial authority in Sarah Grand's Beth Book (1897) The Beth Book, a partly autobiographical narrative, is a feminist Bildungsroman told in the third person. Historical, religious and scientifc discourses combine to give authority to the narrator's vision of Beth, so that the narrator is fnally in a position to award Beth the title of female genius. Yet, very little is said of the con- tent of Beth's "art for man's sake ;" the title and the content of her non-fction book are not described ; and the novel's last words are the name of her "Knight, " a writer who believes in woman's genius to reveal man's own. Avoiding the most direct form of didacticism, Sarah Grand has shifted the emphasis away from Beth's message to women to the narrator's work of authorizing Beth to progress to her position of public speaker. In the process, this narrator is given a historical consciousness and a sex. The Beth Book est un roman d'apprentissage féministe au contenu en partie auto- biographique. Fondant son autorité sur une analyse historique et un discours reli- gieux et scientifque, l'instance narrative fnit par octroyer à Beth le titre de génie féminin. In the "Theatre of Imagination" conceived by Yeats in the 1890s, the poetic Verb is given the power to create visions through the concrete physicality of its uttering by the performing body of what Georges Banu will later call an "acteur-poète". This project transforms dramatic writing process into the creation of a multiform object, in which the issue of the drama is brought out by the tension between oppo- site mediums : theatre on the one hand, singing, dance, tale on the other hand... This exploration involves Yeats in original collaborations on stage with composers, musicians, and dancers. In short, these manifestations of an artistic "hors-champ, " far from threatening the drama, become on the contrary the core of its expression, as a new power is, on stage, devoted to the Verb : the extra-ordinary power to arise the pneuma of singing as well as the rhythm of the dancing body. Anne MOUNIC "To tell and be told" : war poetry as the "transmission of sympathy" War poetry raises a paradox : the destructive collective imposition which weighed upon each soldier during the Great War triggered off new individual awareness and led to a questioning of the values that had prevailed until then, and notably idealis- tic philosophy. Discussing the paradox, we shall oppose tragedy and the individual epic, catharsis and empathy, the choice of death and the choice of life. The Great War writings will be placed in their literary and philosophical context, before and after. Olivier HERCEND Cinema, the mind and the reader in Virginia Woolf's The Mark On the Wall Taking up David Trotter's Cinema and Modernism, this article emphasises the strong links that exist between Virginia Woolf's thoughts on cinema and the new techniques and notions that she develops in "The Mark on the Wall. " Indeed, her depiction of the mind's process fosters the image of a fragmented world, a succes- sion of images that come under no authoritative order or meaning : a mere mon- tage. But cinema also contains the promise of an artistic answer to the fragmentation of the modern condition. Through a renewal of textual co-operation, Woolf opens her reader to the possibilities of what I choose to call an "aesthetics of juxtaposi- tion. Antonia RIGAUD Les Europeras de John Cage : de l'opéra au cirque Cet article interroge le rapport ambigu qu'entretint John Cage avec le théâtre tout au long de sa carrière. Influencé très tôt par Artaud et Stein, il ne cesse de faire référence au théâtre et conçoit son art comme une réflexion sur la théâtralité et la notion de performance. Ses Europeras, à la fin de sa carrière, permettent de mettre en avant la manière dont il a cherché à la fois à inscrire ses expérimentations artis- tiques dans le champ théâtral tout en faisant sortir le théâtre des codes mêmes de la scène. La place centrale que Cage donne au théâtre, bien qu'il ne produise que de très rares oeuvres théâtrales, témoigne de son désir de penser le théâtre non pas en tant que médium mais en tant que lieu d'expérimentation. This article addresses John Cage's ambiguous relationship with theatre throughout his career. Influenced early by Artaud and Stein, he often referred to theatre and understood his own art project as a reflection on theatricality and performance. The Europeras, written late in his career, testify to his attempt to associate his artistic experimentation with theater while pushing on the limits of theatre. The prominent position Cage gave to the theatre in contrast to the rarity of his theatrical work pieces is emblematic of his ambition to re-think the theatre as a locus of experimentation.

Now regrettably obscure, Nicolas de Montreux published prolifically in various genres during the 1590s (under the anagrammatic pseudonym of "Olénix du Mont Sacré"). He produced most of his work in Nantes under the patronage of Philippe-Emmanuel de Lorraine, Duke of Mercoeur, when the latter was Governor of Brittany — hence the frequent political cast of his writing, since Mercoeur was the ultimate hold-out for the ultra-Catholic Holy League against Henri IV. Yet Montreux also contributed significantly to the diffusion in France of Italian-inspired romantic pastoral, and his comedy Diane, whose title evokes the Diana of Montemayor, was his major dramatic composition in this vein. First appended to the third volume of his popular Bergeries (Tours, 1594), which otherwise mingle prose and verse, Diane recalls Italian models : Tasso's Aminta, Guarini's Il Pastor Fido, the commedia dell'arte. It displays exuberant theatricality in pushing towards absurdity its inevitable theme — the disruptive power of terrestrial love, which is finally aligned with that which brings harmony to the universe. Magical intervention is the means ; multiple marriages mark the end. The overlap with Shakespeare's romantic comedies, especially A Midsummer Night's Dream (1595-96), offers a special rationale for translating Montreux's work into English. Besides an Introduction exploring the play's contexts and affiliations, the volume includes an annotated edition of the French text, unpublished since Montreux's era.

This volume contains the fourteen papers that were given at the Third Franco-German Colloquium at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Leading French and German scholars in American Studies address issues of ethic cultures in the U.S. and Canada during the Twenties. Based on extensive research this work gives a detailed account and a reappraisal of Edward Westermarck's thought. Westermarck had versatile relations to Victorian evolutionists (Wallace, Tylor, Spencer), and to British social anthropologists (Frazer, Haddon, Rivers, Malinowski) and psychologists (Shand, Sully). Westermarck was a pioneer of anthropological fieldwork, and his writings on the history of marriage and on the origin and development of moral ideas are modern classics. He was a transitional figure between evolutionism, on the one hand, and functionalism and structuralism, on the other hand. Westermarck's theories of exogamy and incest, and his notions of psychological ethics, moral emotions and concepts, and expanding morality were referred to by Durkheim and Freud, as they are referred to by present-day evolutionary theorists. The search for mankind continues to be of current interest.

In this study an analysis of the women characters, who play a dominant part in Bachmann's prose writings, was presented. The results suggested a complex but coherent image. It was found that although the characteristics of this image deserved the appellation "sex-specific" and "traditional" they were infused with new values : the values of individualism, of a specifically female identity and of particular intense personal freedom. It was also found that the theme of personal freedom underlies all motivations, conflicts and situations of tragedy of Bachmann's heroines. Finally, it was found that the image of the woman is not only part of a distinct female-male antithesis, which often assumes violent dimensions, but has a redeeming function for a de-humanized world.
