National Socialism in Oceania
In today's security-conscious environment, the loyalties and allegiances of migrant communities are increasingly being brought into question. Drawing on the collected knowledge of a number of Australian experts investigating interwar issues of security, surveillance and civic rights from the perspective of migration studies, this book aims, through the examination of individuals and groups in Oceania who were targeted for potential subversion or believed to hold National Socialist sympathies (including local National Socialists, Italian-Australians, Russian exiles, members of the right-wing movements the New Guard and Australia First), to consider how issues of security were regarded at another critical point in world history and what lessons we may learn from that period today. This book examines a variety of motives for embracing National Socialism and investing hope in the Third Reich. Attitudes shifted over time from enthusiasm to scepticism and disappointment. But, most importantly, beyond support and opposition, there was a surprising level of disengagement and indifference from sister movements on the radical right. This groundbreaking study defies easy answers and previously-held understandings, and will stimulate debate and further research.

Italy and Tito’s Yugoslavia in the Age of International Détente
World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. Based on a wide collection of primary sources and documentary materials, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Adriatic region, a conflicted European space that had been affected by territorial disputes and ethnic strife for decades during the 20th century.

Listening to What You See. Selected Contributions on Dutch Art, Edition
Ce volume rassemble plus de 25 essais érudits, critiques et contributions plus courtes de Peter Hecht, précédés d'une introduction sur ce que, selon lui, sa vie dans l'histoire de l'art lui a enseigné. Le titre indique ce que les documents qu'il a rassemblés ont en commun : ensemble, ils représentent la manière d'écouter ce que l'on voit. Hecht se méfie d'appliquer une méthode et pense qu'il est essentiel d'observer une image jusqu'à ce qu'elle nous parle pour pouvoir la comprendre. D'ailleurs, il a beaucoup oeuvré pour prouver qu'il ne suffit pas de simplement étudier le sujet d'une image en tant que tradition iconographique mais qu'on devrait également l'étudier au sein de l'oeuvre complète de l'artiste qui l'a faite. Hecht's attitude has supplemented and corrected the iconological approach to Dutch seventeenth-century painting, and some of his best-known critical papers are included here. So are a few contributions on the changing taste for specific kinds of Dutch painting and an iconographical study that brought to light the subject of one of Rembrandt's most ambitious early works, which had remained unrecognized ever since it was discovered in1924. Its composition had always been misread, and it was again a matter of listening to what you see before its subject could be identified. Apart from a few scholarly reviews, Listening to what you see also contains a sample of Hecht's writings for the public at large. Defending public art collections, showing what art can mean in times of crisis when it is not accessible, as was the case when Covid forced the museums to shut down, and talking about what art may do for us - provided that we listen. Chu Teh-Chun. In Nebula, Edition bilingue français-anglais
Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) est un acteur majeur de la peinture gestuelle abstraite. Né en Chine au sein d'une famille d'amateurs d'art, il est formé à l'Académie des beaux-arts mais subit la guerre sino-japonaise, des tragédies familiales, la disparition quasi totale de ses oeuvres de jeunesse puis l'exil - en 1949 vers Taïwan et en 1955 vers Paris, où il s'installe enfin. C'est dans ce cadre apaisé que son abstraction orageuse voit le jour. Excluant toute géométrie patente, celle-ci est constituée de nébuleuses et autres maelströms polychromes, modelés par de puissants effets de clair-obscur. Atmosphérique et hors échelle, chaque tableau est une matrice où notre vision se projette et s'abîme, nous faisant perdre tout repère spatial ou sémantique. Nourri de peinture tant classique que moderne, tant asiatique qu'occidentale, Chu formule la sensation mnésique du paysage, l'essence dynamique du geste et le surgissement de la lumière. La mise en perspective historique, au gré de parallèles, analogies et autres résonances, nous invite à cerner la singularité d'un régime abstrait sous-tendu par la logique organique du vivant, les formes et les forces de la nature, leurs phénomènes naturels, leur fluidité éruptive et leurs révolutions cosmogoniques. Car Chu s'est longtemps trouvé quelque peu en marge de son époque, en raison peut-être d'une personnalité réservée et d'un rejet de principe de toute stratégie commerciale. L'objet de cette monographie est donc, à l'aune du recul historique et du succès actuel de l'oeuvre, de qualifier certains de ses enjeux esthétiques et d'aider à dissiper quelques malentendus qui ont pu entourer sa réception. Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) is a major figure in the history of gestural abstract painting. Born in China into a family of art lovers, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Then came the Second Sino-Japanese war, family tragedy, the loss of nearly all his early work, and finally, exile-to Taiwan in 1949, then, in 1955, to Paris, where he settled. This peaceful home witnessed the emergence of his tortured abstraction, devoid of obvious geometry, in which polychrome nebulae and maelstroms clash with violent chiaroscuro effects. Atmospheric, impossible to scale, each painting is an arena into which vision is projected and submerged amid a loss of spatial and semantic bearings. Steeped in painting both classical and modern, Asian and Western, Chu's art recreates the memory of a landscape, the dynamic essence of gesture, and the brilliance of light. This study, by placing his work in its context, using parallels, analogies, and other resonances, focuses on the singularity of his approach to abstraction, underpinned by the organic logic of the living world, by natural phenomena, forms, forces, and by their eruptive fluidity and cosmogonic revolutions. For many years, Chu remained a somewhat marginal figure, perhaps because of his reserved personality and his principled rejection of commercial strategies. Making the most of historical perspective, and in light of the artist's current recognition, this monograph sets out to define some of the aesthetic themes shaping his work and to help dispel some of the misunderstandings that have surrounded its reception.

Fiction and Autobiography
Both the postmodern debate about the "death of the author" and cultural debates about constructing identities (national, socio-political, cultural, ethnic, sexual, etc.) have led to multiple attempts at redefining autobiography, traditionally predicated on concepts of identity and truth. D’un empire, l’autre. Premières rencontres entre la France et le Japon au XIXe siècle
Au début des années 1800, les Japonais apprennent avec stupeur l'existence d'un empire en constante expansion dirigé par un certain Napoléon alors que les orientalistes parisiens commencent à réunir des livres sur cet archipel de l'autre bout du monde. La circulation de l'information établit une forme de "diplomatie de l'esprit" . A l'orée du XXe siècle, une nouvelle ère a déjà commencé : Japonais et Français ont établi des relations officielles depuis un demi-siècle et se côtoient désormais sur l'échiquier politique international. D'un empire, l'autre parcourt le premier siècle des contacts (indirects puis directs) entre la France et le Japon. Alors que les ombres d'un ancien monde se voient congédiées de la scène de l'histoire, la marche des temps modernes apparaît inexorable. Les auteurs de ce volume ont délibérément choisi d'explorer des thématiques différentes de celles souvent associées aux relations bilatérales telles que l'histoire diplomatique stricto sensu ou encore le succès du japonisme. Ils visent à interroger ce qui caractérise d'ordinaire les premières rencontres - l'espoir et l'incompréhension, le dialogue et la crainte, l'imaginaire et le réel - et éclairer ainsi des facettes méconnues de la relation franco-japonaise. In the early 1800s, the Japanese discovered to their amazement the existence of an ever-expanding empire ruled by a man called Napoleon. Meanwhile, Parisian orientalists started to acquire books on Japan and to dispel the shrouds of mystery surrounding this island country on the other side of the world. In authorized coteries and circles, the circulation of information encouraged the emergence of a "diplomacy of minds. " By 1900, a new era had dawned : official diplomatic ties had been established between the two countries since half a century and they were now rubbing elbows in the international political arena. Empire to Empire studies the first hundred years of indirect, then direct, contact between France and Japan. As shadows of an ancient world are ushered away from the stage, modernity appears to be unstoppable in its march. The contributors to this volume have chosen to explore subjects different from the issues most often associated with bilateral relations such as diplomatic history in the narrower sense or the triumphant success of Japonisme. They aim to reconsider some of the defining traits associated with first encounters-a mixture of hope and error, dialogue and fear, and imagination and reality-and to shed light on lesser-known aspects of Franco-Japanese relations.

Une nuit, 19 destins, une foule de mauvais choix De 20h à 8h du matin, les destins de 19 protagonistes s'entrecroisent dans la nuit lyonnaise. Ils sont flics, chauffeur de taxi, veilleur de nuit, ... certains sont à un tournant de leur vie, d'autres s'enlisent dans la routine. La plupart ne se connaissent même pas. Pendant que l'un passe une soirée torride, d'autres préparent un braquage, se lamentent sur leur job, ou attendent simplement le bon moment pour sauter dans le vide. Pourtant ces parcours vont finir par s'entremêler et les actions de certains auront des répercussions qu'ils ne pouvaient imaginer. Dans ce récit parfaitement huilé où l'étau se resserre autour des protagonistes au fur et à mesure que l'on apprend à les connaître, l'atmosphère devient suffocante et l'adrénaline monte d'un cran. On doute jusqu'au dernier instant du sort que réserve l'auteur à ses personnages, qui s'accrochent et se débattent dans la nuit. Ozanam pose une à une les pièces d'un puzzle narratif d'envergure sans jamais perdre son lecteur. En toile de fond, on devine la fragilité des relations humaines et toutes les influences cinématographiques. L'art du récit, totalement maîtrisé, vient s'appuyer sur les dessins réalistes aux traits nerveux de Kieran, pour proposer un polar d'ambiance teinté d'humour.

Thomas Mann's «Joseph und seine Brüder» and the Phallic Theology of the Old Testament
When Thomas Mann began to work on his Joseph novel, he was motivated to do so by the image of the beautiful seventeen-year-old youth and the erotic attraction this image exercised on him personally. He undertook to retell the biblical story of Joseph in order to explore the meaning of this attraction. In the phallic theology of the Old Testament - Israel's covenant with Yahweh was a sacred marriage, outwardly marked by circumcision, for the purpose of mutual sanctification and aggrandizement - Mann discovered the framework of a metaphysics of homoerotic desire. This book explores the many implications Mann found in his biblical source, including the paradoxical notion that a certain degree of suppression of the original desire is required if it is to continue to play its all-important role as a motivating force.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.
