Yet a careful reading of those letters within letters, that seem to pass unnoticed in a novel where sight is the most important of the five senses and where the (mis) interpretation of signs is central, proves rewarding if only from a dramatic viewpoint. Indeed, some of those (enclosed, copied, mentioned, commented upon, etc.) letters within the letters collected by the "editor" trigger not just one of the two plots (the quest for Evelina's name and, at least, social identity) but also changes in geographical places, new turns in the two plots (the second one being the love plot), a comic episode, etc. If some of them thwart the reader's expectations, all of them make it possible to approach one of the key issues broached in the novel. The American park movement has been extensively studied and historicized since the beginning of the 1970s, but its origins have been little documented or analyzed. It is understood as resulting from the combined action of three factors : urbanization and industrialization, development of tourism and leisure, evolving perceptions of nature. This paper examines the limits of such interpretations on the period immediately preceding the foundation of the first parks and studies the contribution of rural cemeteries to the park movement. Andrew DIAMOND : Cutting through the "Fog of War" : World War II and the fracturing of the New Deal order in the urban North While the New Deal created a new relationship between ordinary citizens and the federal government with its work relief programs, welfare system, and laws protecting organized labor, this relationship began to sour in a northern wartime context marked by massive black migration, widespread racial conflict, and increasingly militant civil rights organizations. Pressured by black mobilization and the outbreak of violent civil disorders in major war production centers between 1941 and 1943, federal, state, and city authorities moved to create a range of race relations organizations devoted to fighting racial discrimination and fostering interracial cooperation. These organizations, some which were of a quasi-official nature, quickly became fixtures on the local political scene, playing active roles in countering the campaigns of whites to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and to retain the privileges of whiteness at work. What follows constitutes an attempt to understand how white residents and workers perceived and responded to these new race relations organizations. I will argue that in the eyes of average white residents and workers whose interests seemed to run up against them, the proliferation of these organizations worked to recast the role of the state from protector of the working man to protector of black rights, thereby fracturing the young New Deal order. This volume asserts that there was tacit cooperation in the Nazi extermination of the Jewish population of Europe by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Second World War. Although the Allies publicly recognized the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the London Declaration of December 17, 1942, the policies they pursued allowed the genocide to continue. They did so, the author claims, in three ways : (1) refusal to publicly and personally speak about and against the Nazi extermination of the Jews ; (2) refusal to commit even one soldier, one plane, or one warship to any forcible opposition to the "Final Solution" throughout the Second World War ; and (3) obstruction of Jewish escape from Hitler's Europe. But in Belgium and around the world, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has been the subject of debate in recent years. This handbook reflects these various debates. For some time now studies on European post-war history have regarded the 1970s as a period of crisis and uncertainty. Julian Schwinger was one of the leading theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His contributions are as important, and as pervasive, as those of Richard Feymnan, with whom (and with Sin-itiro Tomonaga) he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. Yet, while Feynman is universally recognized as a cultural icon, Schwinger is little known even to many within the physics community. This biography aims to describe Schwinger's life and research contributions to a wider audience. As a youth, Julian Schwinger began as a nuclear physicist, turning to classical electrodynamics after World War II. In the years after the war, he was the first to renormalize quantum electrodynamics. Subsequently, he presented the most complete formulation of quantum field theory and laid the foundations for the electroweak synthesis of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, and he made fundamental contributions to the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, to many-body theory, and to quantum optics. He developed a unique approach to quantum mechanics, measurement algebra, and a general quantum action principle. His discoveries include, Feynman's, parameters and 'Glauber's' coherent states; in later years he also developed an alternative to operator field theory, which he called Source Theory, which reflected his profound phenomenological bent. His late work on the Thomas-Fermi model of atoms and on the Casimir effect continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of physicists. This biography describes the many strands of his research life, while tracing the personal life of this private and gentle genius.

In many countries (part of) the rental housing market is subject to regulations concerning determination of rent and security of tenure. The author provides fresh theoretical analysis of these measures by taking into account special features of the housing market, like indivisibility, mobility cost and incomplete contracts. The impact a rent ceiling has on contracting, the allocation of the housing stock, rationing cost and on rents in the free housing sector is examined. In some cases tenure laws provide for tenure security and rules for the updating of rent while leaving the initial rent for new leases freely negotiable. The analysis shows that the efficiency of the market could be improved through this type of regulation.
